Linux HID support means the system can interpret a device’s Human Interface Device reports and expose input to Linux applications. It does not guarantee that every game will map every controller feature or that you can configure every setting on a gaming mouse. Check four separate things: whether the device is recognized, whether it produces the input you need, whether its advanced features can be configured, and whether your game or Steam Input maps those controls.
What does Linux HID support actually mean?
HID stands for Human Interface Device. A device uses reports to describe its inputs and, sometimes, outputs or configuration information. Linux parses those reports and can translate them into ordinary input interfaces. The Linux kernel documentation describes the role this way: “The HID subsystem is in charge of parsing the HID report descriptors, and converts HID events into normal input device interfaces”.

That description concerns a layer of the system, not a complete compatibility guarantee. A mouse may move the pointer because its basic input works while its profile controls remain unavailable. A controller may connect and provide buttons or stick movement while a particular game fails to map them. “The cursor moves” and “I can set every mouse profile” are different claims; so are “the controller connects” and “this game maps every control.”
USB and Bluetooth describe ways a device connects. They do not, by themselves, establish which Linux driver handles it, whether the right software can configure it, or how a game will use its controls. Those questions belong to different parts of the stack.

How does a HID device become usable in a game?
The usual path is device and connection, then kernel driver and HID parsing, then input events or raw HID access, and finally a configuration or game layer. A failure at one stage does not necessarily mean every other stage has failed.
- Device and transport: The physical device connects over USB, Bluetooth, or, for some controllers, a dedicated wireless adapter. A device family can have different support paths for different connections.
- Kernel driver and HID parsing: Linux interprets the device’s report descriptor and handles its input. The kernel documentation notes that HID reports can also carry outputs such as LED controls and feature or configuration information.
- Input events or raw reports: Parsed input can appear through ordinary Linux input interfaces. The separate
hidrawinterface gives compatible userspace software access to unparsed reports from USB or Bluetooth HID devices; it is not a game mapping by itself. - Configuration and game mapping: A utility may expose device settings, while the game or an input layer decides what controls mean. Applications can use SDL’s joystick API or its higher-level gamepad API. Steam Input is another controller-configuration layer. A particular game need not use any specific one of these paths.
Permissions matter for some userspace access. A kernel driver can be present while a configuration tool or input layer lacks permission to access the device node it needs. Valve’s Linux rules document hidraw and uinput access for named Steam Input devices. This is a distinct issue from whether the kernel recognizes the device.

Check the exact controller, its connection method, and the intended game rather than relying on a family name. Then consider whether you need only ordinary buttons and axes or also features such as rumble or sensors.
Examples of documented controller paths
| Controller or connection | Documented Linux path | What that establishes—and what it does not |
|---|---|---|
| Sony DualSense over USB or Bluetooth | The Linux hid-playstation source identifies a DualSense driver. Valve’s Linux rules list separate DualSense USB and Bluetooth hidraw access. |
The driver source includes gamepad, sensor, touchpad, battery, rumble, and lightbar code. This does not establish that every game implements every feature or that advanced features behave identically across games. |
| Nintendo Switch Pro Controller or Joy-Cons | The Linux hid-nintendo source identifies Switch Pro Controllers and Joy-Cons. Valve’s rules list separate Switch Pro USB and Bluetooth access. |
These are documented support paths, not a guarantee about every distribution’s installed kernel or every feature in every game. |
| Xbox controller using a supported gamepad path | xpad is an Xbox gamepad driver in the Linux input-driver tree. |
Its presence does not prove that every controller revision or connection method works through the same driver. |
| Xbox controller over Bluetooth | xpadneo documents Bluetooth support. |
Bluetooth support should be checked separately from USB or an Xbox Wireless adapter. |
| Xbox controller over USB or Xbox Wireless dongle | xone documents USB and the Xbox Wireless dongle, and directs Bluetooth users to xpadneo. The project describes itself as in maintenance mode. |
Do not assume the dongle path works without the appropriate driver, or that Bluetooth uses the same path. |
These examples show why “Xbox controller support” is too broad to settle a purchase or troubleshooting question. Check the exact controller and revision, connection method, kernel and distribution, the features you need, any relevant access rules, and how the target game maps input. The cited driver sources describe particular paths; they do not certify every release kernel or game.

What to check before buying or connecting a controller
- Identify the exact controller model or revision, not just the console family.
- Decide whether you will connect by USB, Bluetooth, or a dedicated wireless adapter. Verify that specific route.
- Separate basic controls from extras such as rumble, sensors, or touchpad input. Support for one does not establish support for all.
- Check which kernel and distribution you are running; current main-branch source does not show which changes are included in your installed kernel.
- Check the game’s controller mapping or Steam Input configuration separately from device recognition.
Why does my gaming mouse move the cursor but not let me change its settings?
Basic pointer input can work through Linux’s generic USB HID and input components even when a dedicated configuration application does not recognize the mouse. The configuration layer may rely on a device-specific definition, so support for ordinary movement and buttons does not prove that profiles or other advertised controls are configurable.
libratbag describes ratbagd as a configuration daemon mainly for gaming mice. Piper is a graphical frontend for that daemon. Piper’s maintainers say, “Piper is merely a graphical frontend to the ratbagd DBus daemon”. Its supported devices and available features depend on libratbag and may differ from what a manufacturer advertises.

Exact model names matter. The libratbag project’s device files include a Logitech G502 Hero entry with USB match 046d:c08b and a separate G502 X PLUS entry with different device matches and quirks. Those entries establish that the project has definitions for those particular models; they do not establish that every G502 version, connection, advertised feature, or software version behaves the same way. Confirm the exact mouse and the feature you want against the relevant project’s device information.
Solaar is another Logitech device manager, but its project explicitly says it is not a device driver. Treat it as a separate settings route only when the exact Logitech device and desired function fit; it does not replace the underlying driver or guarantee support for every device.

Separate pointer behavior from configuration
- Pointer and ordinary buttons: These may work through generic input support.
- Profiles and advanced settings: These may require a supported device definition and the appropriate configuration software.
- Game behavior: A game may interpret the available buttons differently from a mouse configuration tool, or may not expose a control as expected.
For a mouse, verify the exact model and device ID, the desired feature, the connection, and the installed configuration software. A product-family name alone is not a reliable substitute for those details.
What should I check when a button, stick, or axis behaves strangely?
Work from the device layer upward: identify the exact device and connection, check whether Linux exposes the expected input, then investigate permissions, configuration software, and the game. This avoids treating every problem as a game setting or immediately changing device permissions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Identify the device and transport. Record the exact model or revision and whether it is connected by USB, Bluetooth, or a dedicated adapter. For Xbox controllers in particular, the documented USB, Bluetooth, and Xbox Wireless paths differ.
- Check the device’s HID entry or descriptor when appropriate. The kernel HID guide explains that an invalid or mismatched descriptor, or a device-specific quirk, can lead to missing or incorrect input interfaces. This is a possible cause, not a diagnosis for every unusual control.
- Check for the expected input event. Determine whether the expected
/dev/input/event*interface exists before focusing on a game or frontend. The kernel guide illustrates input-event inspection withlibinput record. - Investigate the next layer only after the input path is clear. Check the relevant driver, userspace access rules, configuration utility, and game mapping as separate possibilities. A missing permission for raw device access is not the same problem as a missing kernel input event.
Do not blindly change device permissions or install an out-of-tree driver as a first step. First establish which layer is failing and whether a documented driver or configuration path applies to the exact device and connection.
What does HID-BPF do, and does it fix unsupported devices?
HID-BPF is a documented way to apply targeted fixes in the HID path, including joystick dead-zone adjustments and descriptor corrections. Its existence shows that some special cases can be addressed; it does not mean a ready-made fix exists for a particular mouse or controller.

Whether a fix is applicable depends on the problem and the device. A descriptor correction is relevant to a problem in how reports are interpreted, while a game mapping or userspace permission issue belongs to a different layer. Identify the failure before looking for a specialized fix.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How current are these driver and device examples?
The cited kernel and project source details were reviewed on October 30, 2026. Main-branch files describe what was visible there at that time, not necessarily what is shipped in a reader’s installed kernel or distribution package. Driver support, device definitions, and access rules can change; confirm current documentation for the exact software version and device.
No universal compatibility rate or performance figure follows from the listed examples. They establish documented driver or configuration paths, not a certification of an unidentified revision, firmware, distribution, connection, or game. The practical question remains whether the specific device produces the controls and features that the intended application can use.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a HID report descriptor?
It is the device-provided description Linux uses to interpret the structure and meaning of HID reports. If that description is invalid or mismatched, the kernel documentation notes that input interfaces or events can be missing or incorrect.

Does HID-BPF require a ready-made fix for my controller?
No. HID-BPF is a mechanism for targeted HID-path changes, not a catalog of fixes for every device. Whether it helps depends on whether the problem is in report interpretation rather than permissions or game mapping.
Why can two mice with similar names have different Linux settings support?
Configuration tools can depend on device-specific definitions and identifiers, and the libratbag files distinguish models with separate matches and quirks. Similar product-family names do not establish that their configuration features are interchangeable.
Does hidraw make a controller work in a game?
Not on its own. It exposes raw HID reports to compatible userspace software; the game or an input layer still has to interpret or map the controls.
