Yes—existing full-game saves on Steam are expected to remain usable after the free Complete Edition update scheduled for 30 October 2026. Steam owners do not need to buy a second copy or start a new game just to receive the update. Back up your save folder before Steam updates, and do not delete it to try to force the new content to appear. The clearest save-specific statement so far comes from a TapTap community recap of the announcement; the official English announcement confirms the free in-place update, but a post-update save-compatibility report was not yet available as of 29 October 2026.
Will my existing Steam save work after the Complete Edition update?
It is expected to. The update is for the original Steam game, not a replacement product with a separate save library. On 27 October, the official Volcano Princess account announced: “Volcano Princess will get a free Steam update on October 30! This free update will contain all the new content added for the multi-platform release.”

In a 29 July interview with AUTOMATON WEST, developer Egg Hatcher said: “Yes, once the free update rolls out, the original Volcano Princess will be upgraded to include all of the Complete Edition’s content, so existing PC players will be able to enjoy every new feature from the Complete Edition at no additional cost.” That describes upgrading the existing game rather than replacing it.
A 29 October TapTap community recap is more explicit about saves: it says old Steam saves will continue to be used, tells players not to delete their save files, and describes the client as pulling the patch automatically. It also mentions changes to save structure. Those are reassuring statements, but they are not the same as a published compatibility table or a report confirming that every save slot has loaded successfully after the update. The patch was scheduled for 30 October, and such confirmation was not available in English at the time of the announcement.

So the practical answer is: keep your existing install and save folder, make a backup, and let Steam update the game. There is no announced requirement to abandon your current progress.
Do I need to start a new game to get the new content?
No new game has been announced as a requirement for receiving the Complete Edition update. Whether a particular new feature is immediately available from an in-progress save is a separate question, and the available English materials do not specify all unlock conditions.
What the update adds
Complete Edition is an expansion of the game, not just a save-file conversion. Egg Hatcher described Path of Two Shadows, a new dungeon where the daughter travels with one chosen companion. Its combat is more demanding than ordinary exploration, and the dungeon includes companion-specific scenarios and illustrations. The multi-platform edition also adds newly written story episodes, CGs, items and clothing, including a wedding dress.
The update is also described as adding full Japanese voice acting, a new opening movie, revised sound effects and soundtrack, and text improvements. Mai Nakahara continues as the daughter; Marina Inoue and Kento Ito join the voice cast. Egg Hatcher told AUTOMATON WEST that the Japanese text was retranslated, the English localization improved, and Traditional Chinese added. Inven Global also reported Korean support for the multi-platform release.
These features give an existing player reasons to revisit the game, but the official English sources do not say whether an in-progress year or month save unlocks Path of Two Shadows immediately, whether a cleared run receives a catch-up flag, or whether any content requires another cycle. Egg Hatcher described the dungeon and episodes, not the exact save-state triggers. A TapTap recap suggests players stuck on the story can begin a new cycle and ending-hunters can head toward the dungeon, but that is not a formal mechanic specification. If the content is not visible in your current run, check the game’s live patch notes or official support information before assuming your save is incompatible.

How should I back up a Steam save before the update?
Copy the save folder somewhere outside the game directory before allowing the update to run. On Windows, Egg Hatcher’s 2025 instructions point to AppDataLocalLowEggHatcherVolcanoPrincess.

VolcanoPrincessfolder to a safe location, such as another drive or a folder you do not use for cleanup. Keep the copy intact rather than selecting only the save file you think is current. - If you use Steam Cloud across devices, Egg Hatcher’s 2025 guidance was to disable Cloud while making a local copy, then turn it back on afterward. The important point is to have a separate copy before the client updates or synchronizes files.
- Let Steam update the existing game, then launch it and check that your expected save slots are present before deleting or changing anything in the backup.
Steam Deck owners can find a community-documented location under the game’s compatibility data at steamapps/compatdata/1669980. The precise full path can differ depending on where Steam is installed and how the Deck is configured. Copying the game’s save data before the update is prudent there, too.
Avoid running storage-cleanup tools against AppDataLocalLow. In its 26 February 2025 Steam news post about version 2.02, Egg Hatcher said Windows 10 and 11 storage cleanup had deleted saves for some players who had not played in a while. That is a specific warning about this save location, not a reason to disable ordinary Windows maintenance everywhere.
What if my save is missing after the update?
Do not immediately start a replacement run or overwrite the backup. First check whether the game moved an older save aside, then preserve the files before trying recovery steps.
Check the archive folder
There is a relevant precedent, although it concerns the 2025 version 2.02 update rather than the 2026 Complete Edition patch. In the V.2.02.01 Steam notice, Egg Hatcher said that when players first launched version 2.02, old-version save files would automatically move to an OldVersionArchives folder in the save directory. The studio recommended making a manual backup before the first launch as well. If expected slots are missing, look in the current save directory for that archive before concluding the files have been erased.

That 2025 change also illustrates why preserving a copy matters: the save-file structure was improved and the number of save slots increased to 24. It does not establish that Complete Edition will handle every save in exactly the same way, so treat the archive check as a sensible recovery lead—not a guarantee about the 2026 patch.
Contact the developer with a copy
If the archive does not contain the save you need, keep a copy of the whole save folder and contact Egg Hatcher at [email protected], the address the studio published for save-loss help in 2025. Include a concise description of your platform, when the problem appeared, and what you have already checked. Do not send your only copy of the files or delete folders while waiting for a response.
Egg Hatcher’s follow-up V.2.02.02 notice on 19 March 2025 addressed a launch failure that could occur after Steam Cloud was enabled when old-save files were missing, and mentioned two-way Steam achievement synchronization as help for players who had lost saves. That history is a reason to distinguish “the game does not show my slot” from “the game will not launch”: record the exact symptom and preserve the save folder before changing Cloud settings or attempting a repair.
Does the update apply to Switch, PlayStation, mobile, or Xbox?
The 30 October patch is specifically a Steam update. Switch, PS5, iOS, and Android received Complete Edition on 30 July 2026, so their full-game versions do not need that Steam patch to become Complete Edition. Xbox Series X|S had no Complete Edition update announced as of 27 October 2026.

For the demo, the Nintendo eShop publisher notes are unambiguous: “Data played in “Volcano Princess Prologue” cannot be carried over to the full release. Thank you for your understanding.” That warning is about the Prologue demo on Switch, PS5, iOS, and Android, not about existing full-game Steam saves.

There is no official documentation for moving a Steam save to Switch, PlayStation, mobile, or Xbox, or for moving a console save back to Steam. Steam Cloud, Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud, and platform-native mobile storage are separate systems; having a copy of the same game on two platforms does not by itself create cross-save support.

The official date is 30 October 2026, and the official post says the update is free. The original Steam app—App ID 1669980, originally released in April 2023—is the one being upgraded. AUTOMATON WEST, citing the publisher and developer, described the Steam update as adding the upgrades and content already released for console and mobile. Techtroduce and PCLabs likewise reported that existing Steam owners would receive the additions without a separate Complete Edition purchase.
The TapTap recap said the push would happen at 12:00, but the official English announcement did not give a time zone or clock time. Treat the date as the confirmed detail and allow for the client’s rollout and download process rather than relying on a particular hour. Earlier July reporting used language such as a staged or sequential PC rollout; the later 27 October official announcement is the clearer statement for Steam: one free update containing all multi-platform new content.
Steam should update the existing installation through the client. If the update does not appear at once, check the game’s update/download status and wait for the rollout rather than searching for a separate paid Complete Edition listing or removing your save data. The update is not announced as a paid DLC purchase.

- Keep the original Steam installation and let Steam apply the update to it.
- Do not delete saves to “force” Complete Edition content to appear.
- After the first launch, check the expected save slots and look for
OldVersionArchivesif an older slot is missing. - If the save appears intact but new content is not accessible, verify the current unlock requirements rather than assuming the save needs conversion or a new game.
Egg Hatcher has previously advised longtime players that they should be able to enjoy the latest form of the game without hassle. The Complete Edition is intended to bring the newer content to the original Steam game; the unknown is the precise behavior of every save and unlock state on the live 2026 patch, not an announced wipe.

No. Nintendo eShop publisher notes explicitly say Prologue data cannot be carried into the full release. That restriction is separate from the expected continuity of existing full-game Steam saves.
Will Path of Two Shadows appear in a save where I already finished the story?
The available English materials do not specify how already-cleared runs unlock the dungeon or whether a catch-up flag is applied. Wait for the game’s patch notes or an in-game unlock prompt rather than assuming a new cycle is mandatory.
