What can make a new iPhone warm?
First-time setup and backup restoration can make an iPhone feel warm as it works through the process. Apple also lists major software updates, wireless charging, demanding games and apps (including camera apps), and high-quality video streaming as activities that can warm the device. Is the warmth within Apple’s recommended temperature range?
Apple’s stated ambient operating range for iPhone is 0–35°C (32–95°F), and its storage range is −20–45°C (−4–113°F). These are manufacturer recommendations, not measurements of how warm a particular iPhone gets during setup. Avoid leaving a phone in a parked car, where temperatures can exceed the storage range. Apple also advises against using or charging an iPhone in ambient temperatures above 35°C (95°F), because that can permanently reduce battery lifespan. What to do while setup or a restore is running
- If the phone is mildly warm and no temperature warning appears, let setup or the restore continue. Apple says it can still be used and should cool after the process finishes.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from hot surroundings. Avoid extended demanding use in a hot environment.
- Do not rely on a specific cooling time: Apple does not give a first-day setup cooling-time estimate.
An iCloud restore can pause if the iPhone crosses a temperature threshold. Apple says the restore resumes after the device cools.

What to do if an alert appears
Temperature warning
If a temperature warning appears, turn off the iPhone, move it to a cooler place away from direct sunlight, and let it cool. Heat management may temporarily slow or stop charging, dim or blank the display, weaken cellular signal, disable camera features, or reduce performance. These temporary changes are ways the device manages its temperature. Apple explains the warning and temperature protections here.
“Charging On Hold”
This alert means the iPhone is temporarily too hot or too cold to charge. If it is hot, move it to a cooler place; if it is actively in use, lock the screen or put it to sleep. When ordinary warmth is not enough to diagnose a problem
Apple’s published guidance does not set a repair threshold for ordinary first-day warmth or promise how long setup should take. The useful distinction is whether the phone is simply warm during a listed activity, or whether it shows a temperature or charging alert. Follow the alert-specific steps if one appears; the temperature ranges above are Apple’s operating recommendations, not an independent safety assessment.
