For browsing inside YouTube, use its miniplayer instead. Playing audio after you leave YouTube or turn off the screen is a separate feature: YouTube documents background play as a Premium benefit.
Choose the kind of minimizing you need
| Option | Where you can go | What stays playing | Eligibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android Picture-in-picture | Other apps | A small floating video | Enable Android and YouTube PiP settings; content eligibility applies. YouTube documents Premium as the route for PiP on music content. |
| YouTube miniplayer | YouTube screens | A small in-app video player | Unavailable for Shorts and videos marked Made for Kids. |
| Background play | Other apps or a screen-off phone | Audio | YouTube documents this as a benefit of a signed-in YouTube Premium membership; Shorts are excluded from background play. |
These are separate features: the miniplayer does not float over other apps, and PiP is not the same as screen-off background audio. See YouTube’s Android PiP instructions, Miniplayer instructions, and Premium benefit details.

Set up a floating YouTube video with PiP
- Open Android Settings → Apps → YouTube.
- Open Picture-in-picture, sometimes listed under Advanced, and enable Allow picture-in-picture.
- In YouTube, open Settings → Playback and turn on Picture-in-picture.
- Start a video, then leave YouTube with the Home button or your system gesture. If PiP is enabled and the video is eligible, it should shrink into a floating window.
- Drag the window to move it. To dismiss it, tap the player and its X control, or drag it off the bottom of the screen.
YouTube’s instructions describe the key trigger this way: “To use picture-in-picture (PiP), exit the YouTube app while a video is playing.” Menu names and locations can vary with Android version and device manufacturer. If YouTube’s PiP setting is missing, check the Android per-app permission first and update YouTube.
Use YouTube’s miniplayer while browsing the app
During playback, tap Back or swipe down to shrink the video into YouTube’s miniplayer. It keeps playing as you browse YouTube and can be moved or resized, but it stays inside YouTube rather than appearing over other apps.

It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).

Keep YouTube audio playing in the background
YouTube says background play is available in its mobile apps when you are signed in with a YouTube Premium membership account. Members can choose Always on, Off, or Headphones or external speakers in the background-play setting. YouTube says this feature is unavailable in the Shorts player.
YouTube also documents Premium as the eligibility route for PiP on music content, including official music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, and user-generated song covers. This restriction concerns music content; PiP availability can depend on the video as well as the settings.

If background playback stops
YouTube’s Android background-play troubleshooting guidance recommends checking these conditions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm Premium is active, the correct account is signed in, and Premium is available in your location.
- Review YouTube’s Background play setting.
- Update YouTube, then restart the app or device.
- Check that background mobile data is allowed and YouTube notifications have not all been blocked.
- Check whether another app is playing audio, which YouTube lists as a possible cause.
- Keep in mind that some videos are unavailable for background play even with channel membership.
These checks address background-play problems; they do not guarantee a fix for every PiP issue.
