Sora AI video generation can feel “too slow” even when the model is working normally—queues fluctuate, requests vary in compute cost, and web sessions sometimes stall while the job runs server-side.
If your job has been running for a long time, the goal is simple: determine whether you’re dealing with expected queue time, an expensive request, or a client/session problem that prevents results from returning.

How Sora AI video generation timing typically works
Video generation usually involves a server-side job: your prompt (and any image/video inputs) is packaged into a request, scheduled on available compute, rendered, then delivered back to your browser.

That means the time you see is a mix of queue time (waiting for resources) plus render time (how hard your specific request is) plus delivery time (upload/download, browser handling).
Common causes of slow Sora AI renders
Queue and compute availability
When demand spikes, jobs wait longer. This is the most common reason “it was fast yesterday” turns into “it takes forever” today.
You can’t fully control this, but you can reduce how expensive your request is (render time) and ensure your client can reliably receive results (delivery time).
Prompt and request complexity
Long prompts, many objects, complex camera motion, high detail, or lots of style constraints can increase compute needs. More constraints don’t always mean better output—they can mean more internal work.
Output settings (length, resolution, aspect ratio)
Video duration and resolution drive cost. Even if the UI sounds similar, requesting a longer clip or higher resolution typically increases render time substantially.
Aspect ratio can also matter because it changes frame composition and effective pixel workload.
Content and safety checks
Some requests may require extra review or filtering. If a prompt is close to disallowed themes or includes sensitive details, the job may slow down while the system applies additional checks.
Recommended Free Tools
If you suspect this, try a neutral version of the prompt that preserves your intent but removes risky wording.
Browser, network, or session issues
If the generation runs server-side but the results can’t load, it can look like the job is “stuck.” Common culprits include unstable Wi‑Fi, restrictive extensions, cached session problems, or an over-aggressive ad/tracker blocker.
Symptoms: the status spinner continues, refresh doesn’t help, or the UI never shows a completion state even though the job may have finished.
Account, rate limits, and billing state
If your account has limits, the system may throttle requests. Billing problems can also degrade behavior, including partial job creation or delayed completion.

Quick triage checklist (before changing anything big)
- Wait 2–5 minutes once you confirm the job started (status moved from queued to running, if your UI shows that).
- Check internet stability: switch from Wi‑Fi to Ethernet (or to a phone hotspot) and try once if your connection is flaky.
- Open the app in a fresh browser window (Incognito/Private). If it works there, your original session is the problem.
- Avoid duplicate clicks: submitting the same prompt multiple times can queue multiple jobs and make everything slower.
- Verify account status (logged in, subscription active, no quota warnings).
How to fix slow generation by adjusting your request
These changes target render time—the part you can influence the most.
Simplify the prompt
Trim the prompt to the essentials: subject, setting, camera framing, motion, and style. Remove long lists of adjectives and extra constraints.
Try a two-pass approach: first generate a “clean” baseline prompt, then iterate on style details in a second run.

Reduce generation cost: shorter duration and lower resolution
If your UI offers controls for clip length and quality, reduce both for the first draft. A 3–5 second draft is often faster than a 10–15 second one, and lower resolution drafts iterate faster.
Once you like the motion and composition, increase settings for final output.
Use fewer variables per run
One run should focus on one main change: subject, camera movement, or style. If you request “three locations + complex choreography + cinematic lighting,” the system has more work to reconcile.
If you need multiple elements, generate them separately and blend the results in post (editing) rather than asking for everything at once.

Break complex scenes into multiple generations
For multi-scene videos, generate shorter segments that each have a clear, bounded context (single location, consistent lighting, stable camera angle).
This reduces per-job complexity and also makes it easier to re-run only the parts that fail.
Troubleshoot the platform session (browser + network)
If the request truly starts but the UI never returns results, treat it like a client problem.
Try a different browser or Incognito/Private window
Use a different browser (or a fresh Private window) and submit the same prompt. If it completes there, your original session likely has a stale cache, cookies issue, or extension interference.

Disable extensions that interfere with requests
Common offenders: script blockers, aggressive privacy tools, content blockers, and browser “download helpers.” Temporarily disable them and retry.
If you use a VPN, try turning it off for one test—some VPN routes add latency and can break long-lived connections.
Check connectivity and latency
Long-lived generation jobs may time out silently on unstable networks. Test your connection by loading other heavy pages and running a speed test.
If latency is high or packet loss is present, switch networks and try again.
Clear site data only for the Sora/OpenAI web app
Clearing all browser data can be overkill. Instead, clear cookies/site data for the specific domain that hosts Sora.
Then reload, sign in, and run a smaller draft to confirm the pipeline works.

When it looks stuck: what to do if the job never finishes
First, don’t submit the same job repeatedly. That can multiply queued work. Instead, do this sequence:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Wait for a visible status change (queued → running → completed). If there’s no status change for a long time, go to the next steps.
- Refresh once and check the job list/history. Many web apps persist jobs even after refresh.
- Open in a Private window and check whether the job appears with a completion state.
- Try a different device (e.g., generate on a MacBook in a different browser, then check results on iPhone).
- Retry with a smaller output (shorter duration or lower resolution). If small jobs complete but large ones don’t, your request complexity is the likely cause.
If the job truly never completes across devices and browsers, contact support with the exact prompt text, time submitted, and any error/status messages you saw.
What to monitor during generation
Progress indicators and status changes
Some UIs show stages like queued, generating, and finalizing. A job stuck at “queued” often indicates compute availability; a job stuck at “finalizing” can point to delivery/render packaging issues.
Retry behavior and idempotency
If you hit retry, check whether the app creates a new job or reuses the same job. Multiple retries can produce multiple concurrent generations, which can slow everything down.
Cause-and-fix reference table
| Likely cause | What you’ll notice | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Queue pressure | Status stays queued longer than usual | Try a smaller draft; retry later; avoid submitting multiple duplicates |
| Prompt complexity | Long prompts; many objects; heavy constraints | Trim prompt; reduce variables; generate baseline first |
| High output settings | Long duration or high resolution requests | Shorten clip; lower resolution for drafts; iterate upward |
| Safety/content filtering | Job slows on certain themes/wording | Rewrite prompt more neutrally; remove sensitive phrasing |
| Client/session issue | Spinner never ends; refresh shows nothing new | Use Private window; disable extensions; clear site data for the app domain |
| Network instability | Random stalls; only happens on certain Wi‑Fi | Switch networks; test latency; avoid VPN for a retry |
| Account/rate limits | Repeated slowdowns; quota warnings | Confirm subscription status; wait for quota reset; reduce request frequency |
Alternatives if you need speed today
If your project has a deadline, you can treat Sora outputs as drafts first.
Lower-spec outputs and iterate
Generate a short, lower-resolution version that gets motion and composition right. Then re-run only the parts that need improvement.
This usually beats waiting on a single expensive “final” render.
Use shorter drafts, then upscale or extend later
If the UI supports quality upgrades or follow-up generations, keep your first run short and crisp. You’ll spend compute where it matters: the final shot.
Rework the prompt to reduce constraints
Replace dense, multi-clause prompts with a structured description: subject + action + camera + lighting + style. Remove extra constraints that you can add later in post.
FAQ
How long is too long for Sora AI video generation?
It varies by queue load and request complexity, but if your job sits with no status change for 15–30 minutes and refresh/Private window shows the same “in progress” state, treat it as a likely client/session issue or an unusually expensive request.
Will a shorter video always generate faster?
Usually, yes. Shorter duration reduces the amount of temporal content to synthesize, which typically lowers render time. Still, prompt complexity can counteract that—simplify both.
Does reloading the page cancel the generation?
Often it doesn’t cancel, but it can hide the results if your session state breaks. Use the job history/list in the UI and check in a Private window to confirm.
Can my prompt be too detailed to finish?
Yes. Extremely long prompts, many interacting elements, or tightly constrained “must match” instructions can increase processing time. Try a shorter baseline prompt first.

Why does it work on one device but not another?
That points to browser/session differences: cached cookies, extensions, blocked third-party requests, or network constraints. Test in Incognito and compare behavior across devices.
Bottom Line
If Sora AI is taking too long, start by distinguishing queue time from render complexity and client/session problems. Most fixes come from reducing request cost (shorter duration, lower resolution, simpler prompt) and ensuring your browser can reliably receive the result.
If you still see jobs that never finish after checking across Private windows and devices, gather your prompt text and timestamps and contact support with concrete details so they can trace the job on their side.
