Nvidia’s stock is a sell in Seaport Research Partners analyst Jay Goldberg’s long-term scenario because the artificial-intelligence buildout may be less physically achievable than announced, while Nvidia is taking on increasingly pro-cyclical financing commitments to keep growth moving. Goldberg’s 2026 price target is $180. He also warns that customer financing, indebted neocloud providers and rising competition could magnify the damage when semiconductor demand eventually cools. The call is an outlier, however: Nvidia could still post very strong sales in the next several months if rival shortages persist.
Why does this analyst rate Nvidia stock a sell?
Goldberg’s thesis is not that Nvidia lacks demand today; it is that the infrastructure and financing cycle supporting that demand may be fragile. Coverage summarized for this story identifies him as the only FactSet-listed analyst with a Sell rating on Nvidia, making the recommendation distinctly outside the prevailing view.

His concern is what follows: if data-center projects are delayed, customers become overextended or computing demand matures, Nvidia could face falling sales and lower margins at the same time that its commitments are hardest to unwind.
Can the announced AI data-center capacity actually be built?
Goldberg estimates that only about 30 gigawatts of the AI data-center capacity announced for 2027 may be buildable, versus roughly 55 gigawatts announced. That implies a gap of about 25 gigawatts, or approximately 45% of the announced total.

Why the shortfall matters
The constraint is not simply the availability of accelerators. Goldberg points to shortages of electricians, gas turbines and electricity connections. A project can have a financing plan and a chip order yet still miss its schedule if the site cannot obtain generation equipment, grid access or the skilled labor needed to install it.
The 55-gigawatt figure is announced capacity, while the 30-gigawatt figure is Goldberg’s estimate of what can be built. Neither number is a measured industry-wide outcome. If his estimate is right, Nvidia’s customers would have less physical capacity in which to deploy systems, reducing the sales opportunity implied by headline project announcements.
Is Nvidia stretching its balance sheet to secure growth?
Goldberg says Nvidia added roughly $250 billion in commitments in the latest quarter to secure supply and support data-center construction. He also cites a Wall Street funding platform of about $500 billion that could potentially expand to $1 trillion.
Those figures do not mean Nvidia would owe the entire platform amount. They describe a wider financing structure involving multiple parties, while the $250 billion figure refers to commitments Goldberg attributes to Nvidia. He argues that such obligations are pro-cyclical: they help accelerate activity when demand is strong but can amplify losses, cancellations and excess capacity when demand turns down.

Cash flow versus commitments
A Seaport discussion references about $200 billion of possible annual operating cash flow as a capacity to absorb spending. That is a cash-generation assumption, not a guarantee, and it does not eliminate timing or counterparty risk. Commitments can come due before the associated projects produce revenue, leaving Nvidia exposed if customers delay orders or financing conditions tighten.
Is Nvidia financing its customers and suppliers?
Goldberg says Nvidia’s investments and loans to suppliers and customers can create a form of circular financing. Backstops, credit guarantees and minimum-revenue commitments may support purchases even when Nvidia’s published list prices do not change.

In his interpretation, that support functions economically like a discount: the customer receives help that lowers the effective cost or risk of buying Nvidia systems, while Nvidia records demand that might not exist on the same terms without assistance. He calls the practice a response to competitive pressure and a strategic tension at the center of the business, because financing can defend market share while weakening the quality of reported demand.
What happens if CoreWeave, Nebius or other neoclouds fail?
Neocloud providers sell computing capacity as a service and have become an important class of Nvidia customers. Goldberg argues that companies such as CoreWeave and Nebius have taken on substantial debt while their long-term profitability remains uncertain.

Nvidia prefers a broader base of smaller customers rather than relying only on a few hyperscalers. That diversification can spread near-term sales, but it also creates credit and concentration risks if smaller providers cannot fill their facilities. Goldberg’s warning is that a neocloud failure could return to Nvidia as reduced orders and even lower margins, especially if Nvidia has provided financing, guarantees or minimum-revenue support.
How serious are competition, cyclicality and eventual saturation?
Goldberg writes that competitive pressure is mounting even though Nvidia may remain strong over the coming months. He acknowledges that Nvidia could leverage its supply-chain strength while rival suppliers struggle, potentially producing record sales into early 2027.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
His longer-term objection is structural. Semiconductors are cyclical, and demand for computing infrastructure will eventually mature rather than grow indefinitely at today’s rate. If that turning point arrives while neoclouds are still leveraged, they may seek additional support just as Nvidia’s own cash flow is weakening. The combination could turn a normal inventory correction into a more severe margin and credit event.
How does the bearish case compare with the bullish case?
The disagreement is mainly about timing and the durability of demand, not whether Nvidia has a strong position in the current AI market.

| Issue | Bearish interpretation | Bullish interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Near-term sales versus the cycle | Strong orders can precede a semiconductor downturn and later saturation. | Rival supply constraints and Nvidia’s execution can sustain rapid sales growth. |
| Announced versus buildable capacity | Power, turbines, grid connections and labor prevent many announced projects from operating on schedule. | Infrastructure bottlenecks are temporary and can be solved through additional investment. |
| Operating cash flow versus commitments | Large, pro-cyclical obligations become burdensome if demand or customer financing reverses. | High cash generation provides room to fund supply and construction while demand remains strong. |
| Pricing versus financing support | Guarantees and backstops may conceal effective discounts and weaker underlying demand. | Financing helps customers deploy systems sooner and protects Nvidia’s ecosystem advantage. |
| Customer mix | Indebted neoclouds can fail and send lower sales and margins back to Nvidia. | Adding many customers reduces dependence on any single hyperscaler. |
What should investors monitor before accepting or rejecting the sell thesis?
The thesis can be tested against operating evidence rather than the headline size of AI announcements. Useful indicators include:
- Whether announced data centers obtain grid interconnections, generation equipment and construction labor on the promised timetable.
- Changes in Nvidia’s disclosed purchase obligations, guarantees, investments and other customer-support arrangements.
- Neocloud providers’ debt maturities, occupancy, pricing and ability to generate positive cash flow without new guarantees.
- Whether Nvidia maintains pricing and margins without expanding financing concessions.
- Order trends at major hyperscalers and smaller cloud providers when competing accelerator supply improves.
Improving build rates, healthy customer balance sheets and sustained demand without larger concessions would weaken Goldberg’s argument. Delays, defaults or rising support costs would strengthen it.
What is the analyst’s time horizon?
Goldberg’s warning is aimed beyond the next few months. He explicitly allows that Nvidia can outperform while competitors face shortages and that sales may reach records into early 2027. The Sell rating rests on the possibility that infrastructure saturation and financing stress arrive later, when commitments are fixed and customer economics are less forgiving.

Is a 45% data-center shortfall a measured result?
No. The shortfall is calculated from Goldberg’s estimate that about 30 gigawatts of the roughly 55 gigawatts announced for 2027 can be built. Actual construction and connection data could produce a different result.
Would Nvidia be responsible for the entire $1 trillion funding platform?
No. The platform figure describes financing across a broader group of participants. Goldberg’s argument is that Nvidia’s own commitments and support arrangements could still leave it exposed if the wider system contracts.

Neoclouds generally rent specialized computing capacity to customers and may rely more heavily on debt financing to build facilities. Hyperscalers typically have larger, more diversified businesses and balance sheets, so a neocloud failure could create a more concentrated shock for Nvidia.
