No—Valve has not confirmed Half-Life 3. The current theory comes from a real moment at a public GameSoundCon panel on October 21, 2026, when Valve composer and audio artist Mike Morasky referred to “HLX” while discussing HDR audio. A colleague’s joking response made the word sound like an accidental leak. Because HLX has previously been linked by dataminers and insiders to an unannounced Half-Life project, fans interpreted the slip as a confirmation. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: a Valve employee publicly used an internal-sounding term that may be connected to Half-Life, but its identity, scope and release status remain unknown.
Did Valve just confirm Half-Life 3?
No. The panel provides evidence that “HLX” is a term used inside or around Valve, not that it is the final name of Half-Life 3. Valve has not announced a game called Half-Life 3, identified HLX, shown a trailer, set a launch date or named a platform.

The distinction matters because the strongest evidence is a public recording, while the Half-Life connection is an inference built from earlier data-mining reports and insider claims. Those clues can be meaningful without amounting to an official product announcement.
What exactly did the Valve developer say?
During the GameSoundCon session “Valve’s Approach to an Open and Flexible Audio Engine,” Morasky was answering a technical question about voice counts and high-dynamic-range (HDR) audio. He said:

“In fact, I think Deadlock has their own version of HDR. HLX has its own version, so on and so forth.”
Ars Technica’s transcript places the line in a longer explanation of Valve’s HDR system: “Our HDR system is basically that’s one of the three pieces that come together to make an HDR that you can easily optimize. And in fact, I think Deadlock has their own version of HDR. HLX has its own version, so on and so forth.”

What did the “nice work” comment mean?
Valve sound designer David Feise reportedly responded immediately with “nice work.” Later, according to reports from Ars Technica and PC Gamer, Feise said: “Good job—you only said HLX once!”
That exchange is why the moment looks like an accidental disclosure rather than an ordinary acronym. Feise’s reaction suggests the term was recognizable to the people on the panel and that saying it publicly was noteworthy. It still does not identify the project or establish that the audience heard a final title.
Why do fans connect HLX with Half-Life?
HLX already had a rumor trail before the panel. PC Gamer reported that an HLX-like data string appeared in a Counter-Strike 2 update in early 2024 and resembled HLVR, the reported codename associated with Half-Life: Alyx. VGC and Kotaku have described HLX as an alleged codename for an unannounced Half-Life project, based on data mining and insider reporting rather than a Valve statement.

That history gives the panel clip more weight for fans: the word was not entirely new, and it appeared alongside a colleague’s apparent warning. But a reused internal label can refer to a prototype, an engine initiative, a canceled project, a different game or an in-joke. A similar string in game data is also not proof that a product shipped or even remained in development.
What is directly observed, and what is inferred?
| Claim | Evidence level | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Morasky said “HLX” at a public panel | Directly observed in the recording and transcripts | A Valve employee used the term while discussing HDR audio. |
| Feise reacted and later referenced the slip | Reported exchange | The term appeared familiar and saying it was apparently noticeable. |
| HLX is a Half-Life codename | Inference from data mining and insider reports | A plausible connection, not an official identification. |
| HLX is Half-Life 3 | Not established | No confirmed title, product description or announcement. |
| The game is near release | Unverified claim | No cited date, platform, trailer, preorder or launch plan. |
What is the timeline behind the rumor?
| Date | Event | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | GamesRadar reported that Morasky referred to “both the Half-Life games” he had worked on, then corrected himself to “well, game.” | His officially cited Half-Life credit is Half-Life: Alyx, making the correction a talking point among fans. |
| Early 2024 | PC Gamer reported an HLX-like string in a Counter-Strike 2 update. | Readers connected the string with the reported HLVR codename for Half-Life: Alyx. |
| 2025 | PC Gamer covered renewed speculation. | The report noted that HLX could be internal technology, another project, a joke or a Half-Life game; no announcement followed. |
| October 21, 2026 | The GameSoundCon audio-engine panel took place. | Morasky used “HLX” while explaining HDR implementations. |
| October 22–23, 2026 | PC Gamer, Kotaku, GamesRadar, Ars Technica and VGC reported on the clip. | The reports treated it as a new clue while retaining the lack of official confirmation. |
Is Half-Life 3 actually coming?
There is not enough public evidence to answer that reliably. Valve watchers and alleged insiders have made claims that a project is playable end-to-end, but the cited reporting treats those claims as unverified. Nothing in Morasky’s sentence supplies a development milestone, production status or release window.
The most defensible description is therefore: a Valve developer appears to have let the rumored codename HLX slip during a public panel. That wording preserves what the clip shows without turning an ambiguous internal reference into a product announcement.

How should you read the “HLX” clue?
Use a three-part test when new claims appear:
- Separate the recording from the interpretation. The spoken word and the reported reaction are first-hand public evidence; the Half-Life identity is an interpretation.
- Check whether Valve adds specifics. A real announcement would normally identify the product, platforms or release information through an official channel.
- Treat insider and data-mining claims as provisional. They can point to genuine internal work, but they cannot establish that a project survived, shipped or kept the same name.
Until Valve supplies those specifics, “HLX” is best understood as a tantalizing internal term with an uncertain identity, not a confirmed Half-Life 3 reveal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Could HLX refer to an audio technology instead of a game?
Yes. Morasky introduced HLX while talking about HDR audio implementations, so it could be an internal technology, tool or project label. The panel never defines the acronym, leaving that possibility open.
Does the HLX string in Counter-Strike 2 prove a Half-Life game exists?
No. A data string can be leftover code, a shared system name or a reference to work that changed direction. Its resemblance to the reported HLVR label makes it interesting, but not conclusive.

Where can I watch the panel discussion?
The session, titled “Valve’s Approach to an Open and Flexible Audio Engine,” is available as a public GameSoundCon Vimeo recording. Watching the surrounding HDR discussion is useful because the clip is technical rather than a game announcement.
Why did the 2023 “both Half-Life games” correction matter?
Fans noticed that Morasky corrected “games” to “game,” while his officially cited Half-Life credit is Half-Life: Alyx. The wording is suggestive, but it does not identify another released or announced title.
