An iPhone can feel slow after installing iOS 27 for several reasons, and the timing alone does not show that the update caused a lasting performance problem. Apple says some update-related tasks continue in the background and may affect battery life and thermal performance. Storage, Low Power Mode, temperature, network conditions, touch response and battery health can also affect how the phone feels.
If the change began right after the update, start by checking for ongoing update activity, then work through the checks below to identify whether the slowdown affects the whole phone, a particular app or only internet-dependent tasks.

First, check whether iOS is still doing work in the background
Apple says you can use an iPhone immediately after an update while certain update tasks continue in the background. Those tasks may affect battery life and thermal performance. If battery life is worse, Apple advises waiting a few days and checking again; this is guidance about battery life and heat, not a guarantee that every responsiveness issue will disappear on a schedule. In Settings > Battery, look for the “Ongoing iOS Update” insight, if it appears on your device.
iOS 27 availability began September 14, 2026. Apple’s update information lists iOS 27.0.1, dated September 28, 2026 in its security-release listing. To check for a newer point release, open Settings > General > Software Update. Install an update if available, but do not assume it will fix a slowdown unless its release notes identify a relevant issue. Work through the checks that can make an iPhone feel slow
Check available storage
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Apple recommends keeping at least 1 GB of free space to avoid slowdowns. Review the storage recommendations on that screen, then offload or delete apps and other items you no longer need. Low free space is one possible cause, not proof that storage explains a slowdown.
See whether Low Power Mode is on
Go to Settings > Battery and check Low Power Mode. Apple says this mode reduces power use and can make some features work more slowly. If you want to compare performance with it off and battery life permits, turn it off and see whether the behavior changes.

Consider the iPhone’s temperature
An iPhone may run more slowly when it is too hot or too cold. Move it to a more moderate environment and reassess; Apple recommends changing the temperature conditions, not using a particular cooling accessory.

Work out whether the problem is your connection
If only apps that rely on the internet seem slow, test Wi-Fi or try again in another location. Network congestion or reconnecting to cell towers can slow app performance even when the cellular signal looks strong. If mobile-data problems continue across locations, contact your carrier.

Review battery activity and health
In Settings > Battery, review app and system activity and compare usage with recent days. To check battery health, the path depends on the model: use Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging on iPhone 14 and earlier, or Settings > Battery > Battery Health on iPhone 15 and later. Apple’s battery-usage guide explains the activity details.
Check whether taps are registering properly
A screen that responds incorrectly to taps can make the phone seem slow even when the issue is touch response rather than processing speed. Try restarting the iPhone. If the screen continues to respond incorrectly, seek service.

When battery service may be relevant
An aging battery can affect peak performance, but the update date alone does not establish that the battery is the cause. Apple describes performance management as a response to an unexpected shutdown when a battery cannot deliver the required peak power. Check Battery Health and any Peak Performance Capability message rather than inferring battery trouble from sluggishness alone. Apple explains this in its iPhone battery and performance guidance.

Interpret the pattern before deciding what to do next
- The change started immediately after installation: Check for the “Ongoing iOS Update” insight and give background activity time to finish. If battery life is worse, Apple advises checking again after a few days.
- Only one app or internet-based apps are affected: Check that app’s behavior and test the network before treating it as a whole-device performance problem.
- Everything feels slow: Check storage, Low Power Mode and temperature, then review battery activity and health.
- Only taps or gestures seem delayed or incorrect: Restart the phone and seek service if touch response remains faulty.
Apple’s slow-performance troubleshooting guide covers these checks. Force-closing apps unnecessarily can itself slow down the device, so do not make routinely swiping away every app your first troubleshooting step.
