To estimate when a phone’s promised updates end, start with the policy’s own date anchor, then add the stated duration. The result is only meaningful when you identify the phone model and region, distinguish operating-system upgrades from security updates, and label the date as a commitment, a legal minimum or an observed update—not as interchangeable forms of support.
What date does a phone update policy count from?
Use the starting event named in the policy. It may not be the phone’s announcement date, the day it first appeared in a shop, the date you bought it or the date the policy was published.

- Google Pixel: Google counts the support period from when each model first became available on the Google Store in the US. The model-specific schedule is on Google’s Pixel update schedule.
- Covered devices under the EU rule: the required update-availability period runs from when the model ceases to be placed on the market. That is a different anchor from a retail launch. See Regulation (EU) 2023/1670, consolidated text.
A buyer’s purchase date is not a substitute for either anchor. To calculate an end date, first find the relevant model’s date under the policy’s definition. If the source gives only a month or year, report an approximate end period rather than inventing a precise final day.

Which updates does the promised period cover?
“Updates” can mean different things. A policy promising operating-system (OS) upgrades does not necessarily promise security patches for the same period, and a security-update promise does not by itself establish a schedule for new OS versions. Read the categories the policy actually names.

Google’s current schedule distinguishes model cohorts. It says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of OS and security updates, while its listed Pixel 6- and Pixel 7-era models and Pixel Fold receive five years of both. Those periods begin at the model’s first availability on the Google Store in the US; consult Google’s schedule for the named models and details.
A brand-wide headline can conceal eligibility limits. Samsung’s February 2022 announcement described four generations of OS upgrades for eligible products, not every Galaxy model automatically. It is a historical announcement, so use a current model-specific Samsung support source to assess a later phone. The announcement is available at Samsung’s policy statement.

How to calculate and label an expected end date
- Identify the exact model and cohort. Do not infer support from the brand name or a newer model in the same product family.
- Record the policy’s scope. Note whether it covers OS upgrades, security updates, or another defined category.
- Find the policy’s anchor event and date. Use the source’s stated convention, such as first US Google Store availability or end of market placement under the EU rule.
- Add the promised duration. Use calendar years, and preserve the precision of the anchor. A seven-year term tied to a known date can support a more precise estimate than a term tied only to a year.
- Label what the result means. Call it a committed-through or expected date when it comes from a manufacturer’s public promise; call it a statutory minimum when it comes from a legal requirement. Do not describe either as the date a final patch was actually delivered.
- Keep a dated source record. Manufacturer support schedules and release archives can change, so note when you checked them.
For example, Google’s seven-year Pixel term is a public commitment for the models covered by its schedule, measured from their first US Google Store availability. The EU rule described below is a minimum measured from a different event. Neither can be calculated from an individual owner’s purchase date.
What the EU five-year minimum does—and does not—mean
For devices within its scope, Regulation (EU) 2023/1670 requires qualifying updates to be available at no cost for at least five years after the model ceases to be placed on the market. It is not automatically a five-year countdown from retail launch, and the rule should not be generalized to phones outside its covered-device scope. Read the consolidated regulation for the applicable requirements.

The regulation also sets intervals for making specified updates available after an upstream release event: no later than four months for covered security or corrective updates, and six months for covered functionality updates. These are timing limits for particular updates, not the total length of the support period. Keep the duration and the delivery interval separate when describing a device’s obligations.
How to read an update history without mistaking it for a promise
A dated release archive shows what was issued, not how long a manufacturer promises to support every device in the future. Apple’s security-release archive listed iOS 15.8.8 for iPhone 6s, iPhone 7 and first-generation iPhone SE on May 11, 2026. That is evidence of an update reaching those devices on that date; it does not establish a fixed future support term for all iPhones. See Apple’s security releases archive.

When comparing a policy with actual update history, label the two separately: a commitment or legal minimum describes an expected availability period; an archive entry establishes that a particular release was listed for particular devices on a particular date.

How to check your own phone’s update status
On a Pixel, open Settings > About phone > Android version to see the Android version and security update level. Google’s instructions also explain how to check for an update from the phone’s settings; use Google’s Pixel support page for current steps. Menu names can vary by device and software version.

Then match the device’s exact model to the manufacturer’s current support schedule. The installed security-update level tells you what is on the phone now; the schedule tells you what the manufacturer says that model is due to receive.
What to compare when two support policies look similar
Before treating two update promises as equivalent, compare the terms that determine their real meaning:
