Start by separating a game-specific failure from a Steam Deck-wide problem. If only one horror game hitches or crashes, begin with its installed files, Proton compatibility setting, launch options, shader processing, and any title-specific launcher, codec, or anti-cheat behavior. If several games stutter and the SteamOS menus lag too, return the Deck to stock settings and investigate plugins, storage, firmware, thermals, and support diagnostics instead.
Use the fixes below in order, changing one variable at a time. Reboot, finish updates, verify the game, test the default Proton branch, remove overlays and performance tweaks, then examine shader-cache and storage symptoms. Recovery or a factory reset belongs at the end, after backups and Steam Support guidance—not at the beginning.

Why do horror games stutter or crash on Steam Deck?
The scope of the problem is the most useful first diagnosis. A single affected title usually points to that game’s files, Proton branch, launch options, shader data, launcher, anti-cheat, video codec, or media files. Several games failing, especially when Game Mode itself is sluggish, suggests a device-wide issue involving SteamOS, plugins, storage, firmware, thermal behavior, or altered performance controls.

Proton is Valve’s compatibility tool for running Windows games on Linux. Compatibility therefore varies by title and by Proton branch; a setting that helps one game can make another less reliable.

What should I record before changing settings?
Write down the exact symptom and its boundary before making a change. This prevents a long sequence of simultaneous tweaks from hiding the cause.
- Is the problem a brief hitch, a sustained frame-time spike, a freeze, a return to the library, or a failure to launch?
- Does it happen at launch, after the opening video, when a new area loads, after suspend and resume, or only while docked?
- Does Game Mode’s interface remain smooth while the game fails, or do menus and Settings lag as well?
- Which SteamOS and Proton versions are selected, and did the problem begin after an update, plugin installation, display change, or performance tweak?
- Are you on battery or charging, handheld or docked, and what temperatures does the Deck report when the issue occurs?
These notes are especially useful if you later contact Steam Support. They also make it possible to undo one change and compare the result after a reboot.

Follow this sequence rather than changing graphics, Proton, launch options, and plugins simultaneously. After each step, reproduce the same scene or transition so the comparison is meaningful.
1. Reboot and finish pending work
Restart the Deck before diagnosing a transient process or driver state. In Game Mode, check for SteamOS and game updates and let downloads, shader processing, and other queued work finish. A game can hitch while Steam is compiling or downloading data needed for newly encountered effects.
If an update appears to be the boundary, record the versions instead of assuming the newest branch is the culprit. Test the game’s default or stable Proton choice first; an update-associated regression can be title-specific, and community reports do not establish a universally broken current release.
2. Verify the installed files
Open Library, select the game, open the gear menu, choose Properties, then Installed Files and the installed-file verification command (the wording may vary slightly with the Steam client). Wait for the process to complete before launching again.

3. Test Proton deliberately
In the game’s Properties, open Compatibility. Test the default or stable Proton selection first, then one alternative branch, such as Proton Experimental, if the stable path fails. Force only one branch for the comparison and record whether the result changes at launch, after the intro, in a particular scene, or after suspend and resume.
ProtonDB can provide community reports and title-specific suggestions, but those reports are not guarantees and may describe an older game build, Proton version, or launch option. Check the game’s current Steam Deck status as well as the report’s date and conditions.
4. Remove custom launch options and injectors
Temporarily clear custom launch options in the game’s Properties and disable anything that injects into the render path. That includes Decky Loader plugins, performance overlays, frame-generation or upscaling injectors, and non-default TDP, GPU, or fan controls.

If that option is present on the Deck, disable it for the diagnostic, restart, and retest. Re-enable modifications one at a time only after the unmodified game remains stable.
5. Treat shader compilation as a possibility, not a verdict
First-run compilation or compilation when a new effect appears can create temporary hitches. That pattern is different from a game that repeatedly freezes, crashes, or stutters in the same way after all processing has completed.
If Steam is stuck downloading or rebuilding a large shader or compatibility-data payload, make enough storage available for the operation and allow it to finish. The available evidence supports the need for storage headroom, but not a universal “keep this many gigabytes free” rule. A full drive can block cache updates as well as game updates.
A targeted cache or compatibility-data reset may be useful as a diagnostic, but the next run can stutter while the data is rebuilt. Community reports about clearing or disabling shader caches are anecdotal and game-dependent; do not treat them as a guaranteed fix. Avoid deleting broad Steam directories or using random shell commands when a narrower, reversible test is possible.

6. Return graphics and performance controls to conservative values
Use the game’s native resolution or a lower resolution, a stable frame-rate or refresh-rate cap, and no forced scaling or frame generation while diagnosing. Judge frame-time consistency rather than average FPS alone: a high average can still feel like a sequence of severe hitches.
If the issue appears only when docked, with an external display, or after changing the maximum game resolution, test handheld mode and the intended display resolution separately. This identifies a display-path problem without claiming that one preset fixes every horror game.
Why does the game crash after the intro?
A crash immediately after an opening video or at the first level transition can be title-specific rather than a general Steam Deck fault. The transition may invoke a Windows video codec, launcher, anti-cheat module, or media file that behaves differently under Proton.
Use the controlled sequence above: verify files, test the default Proton branch, then one alternative, and remove launch options and injectors. Note whether the crash occurs at the same video, menu, or loading transition every time. A repeatable boundary is valuable information for ProtonDB and Steam Support, but it is not enough evidence to prescribe a universal codec command or launch option for an unnamed game.
Should I use Proton Experimental?
Use Proton Experimental as a deliberate comparison, not as a default upgrade. Stable Proton is the baseline; Experimental can contain newer compatibility changes that help a title, but it can also introduce different regressions.

Change only the Proton branch for this test. If you also alter resolution, overlays, and launch options, you cannot tell which change mattered.
How do I handle shader-cache and storage symptoms?
SteamOS manages shader data automatically, so the first response to a visible “processing” task is to let it complete and check available storage. A cache that is still being rebuilt can cause temporary hitching; a cache update that cannot complete because storage is full can make the problem persist.

- Pause other downloads only if they prevent the game or cache operation from finishing, then resume the required update.
- Remove unneeded games or move large files before repeating the test. An added UHS-I microSD card increases capacity, but it does not cure Proton incompatibility or shader compilation by itself.
- If you perform a targeted cache or compatibility-data reset, expect the first subsequent run to rebuild data and hitch temporarily.
- Do not infer a fixed free-space threshold from another Deck model, game, or forum post; no universal number is established here.
Why does every game stutter?
When several games and Game Mode menus hitch, stop treating each horror title as an isolated Proton problem. Return the Deck to stock behavior and work through device-wide checks.
Disable external modifications
Turn off Decky Loader plugins, overlays, frame-generation or upscaling injectors, custom launch options, and aggressive TDP, GPU, or fan settings. If Enable updated fan control is available, disable it for the test, restart, and compare menu behavior as well as game behavior.
Try the storage-maintenance option
In Settings > System, look for Run storage device maintenance tasks. It can be tried as a low-risk maintenance step when the option is exposed by SteamOS. Evidence for this remedy comes from a community report, not a controlled test or a Valve guarantee, so a failure to improve does not diagnose the storage device.
Check operating conditions
Record temperatures, charging state, whether the Deck is docked, and recent hardware or software changes. A symptom limited to charging, an external display, or a modified fan profile needs a different investigation from one that appears in handheld menus on battery.
Escalate with useful evidence
If stock settings and maintenance do not help, contact Steam Support. Include the affected games, SteamOS and Proton versions, whether menus stutter, the exact point of failure, temperatures and charging state, and the changes that preceded it. This is more useful than reporting only that “all games are slow.”
Why did it work before the last update?
An update can change SteamOS behavior, a game build, Proton compatibility, shader data, or a plugin’s interaction with the system. Community reports show that update-associated regressions can occur, but they do not prove that every Deck or every current release is affected.
Record the versions at the time of the change, finish all pending downloads, reboot, and test the default or stable Proton branch without custom launch options. If only one title regressed, report that title and its reproducible scene; if menus and multiple games regressed, use the device-wide path instead.

When should I use recovery mode or a factory reset?
Recovery or reimaging is a last resort after backups, stock-settings tests, and Steam Support contact. It can disrupt local data and will not fix a game-specific Proton incompatibility, a title launcher problem, or a display-only issue.
- Back up saves and any files stored locally, and make sure you know which data is synchronized through Steam Cloud.
- Document the games, versions, symptoms, temperatures, charging state, and recent changes so the failure can be compared after recovery.
- Use Valve’s current Steam Deck recovery guidance and official support channels rather than an unofficial image or a random shell command.
- After recovery, update SteamOS, install one affected game, and test it before restoring plugins, overlays, launch options, or performance profiles.
If the same failure returns on a clean, stock system across multiple games, provide that result to Steam Support; it is stronger evidence of a system-level issue than a reset performed without a controlled comparison.

Why does every game stutter but the FPS counter looks normal?
Average FPS can hide uneven frame times, so a normal-looking counter does not rule out a system-wide hitch. Compare Game Mode menus, disable plugins and custom fan or power controls, and record temperatures and charging state before changing individual game settings.
Can a microSD card fix horror-game crashes?

Do I need to factory-reset my Steam Deck?
Only consider a reset after the problem survives stock settings across multiple games and support diagnostics have been documented. Back up local data first, because recovery can erase or disrupt it and cannot guarantee a fix for a single-game compatibility problem.
