AI data centers use so much electricity because they run dense clusters of accelerator servers at high utilization, then add the power needed to move data, remove heat and keep the site continuously available. Training repeatedly processes enormous datasets; inference answers requests around the clock. Newer uses such as video generation, long-form reasoning and agentic software can require vastly more computation per request than a short text response. The result is a facility whose electrical demand is driven mainly by computing hardware, with cooling and other infrastructure adding a substantial overhead.
What uses the electricity inside an AI data center?
The electricity does not go to one mysterious “AI” component. It is divided among servers, cooling, networking, storage and reliability systems. The exact split changes with the facility’s design, climate, hardware and workload, but servers are normally the largest load.

| Servers and accelerators | About 60% of modern data-center electricity, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) in 2025 |
| Cooling | About 7% in efficient hyperscale facilities and more than 30% in less-efficient enterprise facilities |
| Storage | About 5% |
| Networking | Up to 5% |
| Power conversion and backup | Variable overhead for UPS systems, generators and conditioning equipment |
These categories interact. A larger accelerator cluster creates more heat, requires higher-capacity power delivery and moves more data between chips and storage. A site with less efficient cooling can therefore consume considerably more electricity even when it performs the same computation.
Why do GPUs and other accelerators draw so much power?
AI models perform vast numbers of matrix and tensor operations. GPUs and specialized accelerators execute those operations in parallel, producing far more AI work per server than a conventional CPU-only machine. That performance is useful, but each accelerator server has a high electrical draw, and useful capacity comes from deploying many of them together.

Training repeats the workload at enormous scale
During training, a model processes a large dataset repeatedly. The system calculates outputs, measures errors and adjusts billions of parameters, then repeats the cycle across many machines. The accelerators must exchange intermediate results quickly, so a training cluster can keep thousands of chips busy for extended periods rather than running a brief, occasional job.
Inference turns occasional work into a service
After training, inference generates answers for users and software applications. A public service may need to respond at any time, maintain spare capacity for demand spikes and run several model versions simultaneously. Even when an individual request is short, the fleet can operate at high utilization because requests arrive continuously.
Power density changes the facility itself
Accelerated servers concentrate more computing and heat in each rack than ordinary enterprise equipment. IEA identifies the deployment of accelerated servers and rising power density as key drivers of future demand. A relatively small building footprint can therefore require an unusually large electrical connection, new substations or upgraded transmission nearby.
How much electricity does an AI data center consume?
There is no single consumption figure that applies to every site. Workload, accelerator generation, utilization, cooling design and the boundary used for accounting all change the result. Public estimates are therefore best read as dated scenarios rather than a permanent rating for every AI facility.
Global data-center scale
The IEA estimated that all data centers worldwide used about 415 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2024, equal to roughly 1.5% of global electricity use. Its 2025 base case projects about 945 TWh in 2030. Those totals include cloud, enterprise and other data centers, not only AI sites, but AI is a major reason the total is rising.
United States outlook
The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s 2026 U.S. update gives a reference-case estimate of 649 TWh in 2030, or 11.8% of total U.S. electricity. Its scenario range is 9.5% to 15.3%, reflecting uncertainty about accelerator shipments, utilization, efficiency and the pace at which projects connect to the grid.

Why a facility comparison needs context
Two buildings with the same megawatt connection can deliver very different amounts of useful AI work. A training-heavy site may run a large cluster continuously, while an inference site may reserve capacity for peaks. Comparing facilities requires at least the workload, accelerator type and generation, average utilization, cooling share and local grid conditions.
Why is AI more electricity-intensive than an ordinary data center?
Traditional data centers also consume power for servers, cooling and networking, but many ordinary workloads are less computationally dense and less dependent on tightly coupled parallel processing. AI changes the balance in three ways: it deploys more accelerators, keeps them busy for longer and enables services whose computational cost is much higher per request.
- More computation per server: accelerator racks perform parallel numerical operations at a scale that general-purpose CPU servers cannot match.
- Higher sustained utilization: model training and busy inference services are designed to keep expensive hardware working rather than waiting idle.
- Faster internal data movement: large models distribute work across chips, increasing demand on high-speed switches, links and storage systems.
- More demanding capabilities: video generation, extended reasoning and agentic systems can invoke many model steps or process large multimodal inputs.
This does not mean every AI request is inherently enormous. The electricity used by a small text prompt can be modest; the facility-wide effect comes from the number of requests, the size of the models and the amount of capacity kept available to serve them.
How much electricity do cooling and other infrastructure add?
Nearly all electricity consumed by computing equipment eventually becomes heat. Fans, pumps, chillers, cooling towers and liquid-cooling loops remove that heat so chips remain within their operating limits. Cooling’s share ranges from about 7% at efficient hyperscale facilities to more than 30% at less-efficient enterprise sites, so the same computing workload can have very different total power needs.
Cooling design and climate matter
Air cooling uses fans and, in many facilities, chillers or cooling towers. Liquid systems can remove heat more directly from dense accelerator hardware, but they require pumps, heat exchangers and carefully designed distribution loops. Outdoor temperature, humidity and the availability of suitable water or air affect how much mechanical cooling is needed. The IEA’s range shows why a single “AI power percentage” cannot be applied to every building.
Networking and storage keep accelerators supplied
AI clusters repeatedly read training data and exchange intermediate results. Switches, routers, network interface equipment and storage arrays therefore add a persistent load. Networking can account for up to about 5% of data-center electricity and storage about 5% in the IEA’s 2025 breakdown, although the shares vary by architecture and workload.

Reliability equipment is installed even when it is idle
Uninterruptible power supplies, batteries, backup generators, transformers and power-conditioning equipment protect services from disturbances and outages. These systems are not normally delivering their maximum output, but they consume some electricity and require conversion capacity. More importantly, they determine how much grid connection and on-site infrastructure the facility must build to maintain its reliability commitments.
If AI becomes more efficient, why can electricity demand still rise?
Efficiency improves the energy needed for one task, but total electricity depends on efficiency multiplied by the number and complexity of tasks. The IEA’s 2026 update says energy use per AI task has fallen by at least an order of magnitude annually in recent years. At the same time, it reports that video generation, reasoning and agentic tasks can use hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query than simple text generation.

When a model becomes cheaper or faster to run, developers can put it into more products and users can make more requests. Applications that were previously impractical—continuous assistants, automated analysis, generated video or multi-step software agents—can add demand even while each individual operation becomes more efficient.
Capability can outweigh optimization
A short text completion may involve one relatively compact pass through a model. A reasoning system may generate and evaluate multiple intermediate answers. An agent may call several tools, retrieve documents and repeat the model step until it completes a task. These additional operations can dominate the savings from improved chips or software.
The right metric is not only energy per query
Energy-per-query estimates are useful for comparing a defined task under defined conditions, but they do not predict a whole facility’s bill by themselves. Operators also need request volume, peak demand, utilization, model mix, cooling overhead and the electricity consumed while capacity is reserved but not fully occupied.
Will AI make the electric grid run out of electricity?
AI is unlikely to make the entire world run out of electricity in one uniform event, but it can create serious local constraints. Data centers cluster where fiber, land and existing power infrastructure are available. Nearly half of U.S. data-center capacity is concentrated in five regional clusters, so a project can have a large effect on a particular transmission area even when the global percentage remains modest.

Connection queues are a local bottleneck
A large AI campus may need a dedicated substation, new transmission lines and generation that can deliver power when the facility operates at high utilization. Building those assets can take longer than installing servers. If several projects request connections in the same region, utilities may have to study upgrades, manage queue priority or impose phased energization.
Forecast ranges are more useful than one headline number
The LBNL 2030 U.S. estimate spans 9.5% to 15.3% of national electricity use across scenarios. The spread reflects uncertainty rather than a contradiction: different assumptions about efficiency, adoption, hardware availability and grid bottlenecks produce different outcomes. A regional planner should therefore examine high-uptake and constrained-supply cases, not rely only on a base case.
What can ease the pressure
- Improving accelerator and software efficiency reduces energy per unit of work.
- Scheduling flexible workloads can move some computation away from local peaks, where latency allows.
- Locating new capacity where transmission and generation are available can reduce connection delays.
- Accurate disclosure of facility demand helps utilities plan generation, lines and substations before shortages appear.
What kinds of power will supply AI data centers?
The generation mix depends on the region and the date, so an AI data center does not have one universal power source. In its 2025 outlook, the IEA projects renewables will provide nearly half of additional electricity demand from data centers through 2030. Natural gas and coal together supply more than 40% of that additional demand in the same projection, while nuclear becomes more important after 2030.
The figures describe electricity serving the sector, not a guarantee that every individual facility is physically matched to a particular plant at every hour. Grid electricity is shared across users, and contracts, certificates or on-site generation can change how an operator reports its supply. The practical issue is whether enough reliable low-carbon generation and transmission are available when the computing load is running.
How should you interpret forecasts and per-query claims?
Check the boundary and assumptions before comparing numbers. A forecast may cover global data centers or only U.S. sites, include facility overhead or count only IT equipment, and represent a base case or a high-adoption scenario. A per-query estimate may describe one model, prompt length, response length and hardware configuration rather than every request made by a service.
- Geography: identify the country or world region.
- Year: separate measured consumption from a projection.
- Facility boundary: determine whether cooling, power conversion and backup systems are included.
- Workload: distinguish training, ordinary inference, high-volume inference, video, reasoning and agentic tasks.
- Utilization: ask whether the number assumes continuous operation, an average load or only active computation.
- Scenario: note whether the estimate is a reference, high-uptake, high-efficiency or bottleneck case.
The IEA has also said that more systematic energy-use disclosure from technology companies is needed. Until operators publish consistent measurements, published totals should be treated as informed estimates with uncertainty bands rather than fixed physical constants.
Best Value
What is the practical bottom line for readers and policymakers?
AI data centers consume substantial electricity because they combine power-dense hardware with continuous operation and increasingly complex workloads. Servers remain the main load, while cooling, networking, storage and reliability systems determine how much extra power a facility needs. Global demand is still a modest share of all electricity, but rapid growth and geographic concentration make local grid planning the central challenge.
Efficiency improvements are essential, yet they will not automatically reduce total consumption. The outcome depends on whether lower energy per task is outweighed by more users, more model calls and more demanding capabilities. Planning decisions should therefore track both efficiency and adoption, disclose facility boundaries clearly and account for regional transmission and generation limits.

Does one AI answer use more electricity than a normal web search?
There is no universal comparison because the result depends on model size, prompt and response length, hardware and the search service’s infrastructure. A simple text request can be relatively small, while a multi-step or multimodal task can require far more computation than a basic lookup.
Why can’t data centers run only when renewable power is available?
Many inference services must respond continuously, and training jobs often have deadlines or coordination requirements. Some flexible work can be shifted in time, but making all AI capacity intermittent would reduce responsiveness and could require additional hardware to handle peaks.
What does a data center’s power-usage effectiveness number tell me?
Power-usage effectiveness compares total facility electricity with electricity delivered to IT equipment. A lower value indicates less overhead for cooling and power systems, but it does not reveal how much useful AI work each server performs or whether the local grid can support expansion.
Why are AI data centers often built near particular cities or regions?
Operators need high-capacity transmission, network connectivity, suitable land and access to construction and cooling resources. Existing clusters can offer those advantages, but concentration also increases the risk that several projects compete for the same substations and transmission upgrades.
