AI data centers need all three because distributed accelerators behave as one tightly coupled machine. GPUs exchange parameters, gradients, activations, and storage data continuously; that traffic must move fast enough to keep the processors busy. Every watt used by those accelerators becomes heat, while the electrical system must supply large, fast-changing loads without interruption. A bottleneck in any one layer—network fabric, thermal loop, utility connection, UPS, or controls—reduces the useful capacity of the others. Modern designs therefore engineer compute, networking, cooling, and power as a single system rather than as separate infrastructure projects.

Why do AI data centers need so much networking, cooling, and power?

Training a large model is not a single-server job. Work is divided across many GPUs or other accelerators, and those devices repeatedly exchange model parameters, gradients, activations, checkpoints, and storage traffic. The processors are expensive, so the facility is designed to minimize the time they wait for data, electricity, or a safe operating temperature.

Adding accelerators increases three loads at once: east-west network traffic between machines, electrical demand at the rack and facility, and heat that must be rejected. A network bottleneck lowers GPU utilization; inadequate cooling causes throttling or limits the number of servers per rack; insufficient electrical capacity prevents the cluster from running reliably. That coupling explains why an AI facility cannot be designed by simply installing conventional servers in a conventional data hall.

How is networking organized inside an AI data center?

AI architectures separate traffic by function so that user access, administration, GPU synchronization, and in-rack communication do not compete blindly for the same paths. NVIDIA’s current architecture documentation identifies four network domains.

Network domain Primary purpose Typical technology or scope
Tenant access network (TAN) Connects applications, users, and external services to the data-center environment. Ethernet; kept separate from internal cluster traffic.
Secure management network (SMN) Carries provisioning, monitoring, firmware, and administrative traffic. Ethernet with security and access controls.
Cluster interconnect network (CIN) Moves the high-volume east-west traffic used for distributed training and inference. Ethernet or InfiniBand, depending on the system design.
In-rack NVLink network Connects GPUs and CPUs inside a rack at very high bandwidth and low latency. NVLink, a proprietary NVIDIA interconnect.

The distinction matters operationally. A management outage should not interrupt GPU collectives, and a burst of tenant traffic should not consume the links needed for gradient synchronization. The cluster fabric also requires deliberate topology, congestion control, routing, and telemetry; simply buying switches with a high port speed does not guarantee application performance.

Why do AI clusters use InfiniBand, 400 Gb/s, or 800 Gb/s Ethernet?

Distributed training repeatedly performs collective operations such as all-reduce, in which every worker contributes data and receives the combined result. If the fabric is slow or congested, accelerators sit idle while waiting for synchronization. High-bandwidth links shorten those pauses, while predictable latency and congestion control help keep thousands of flows from interfering with one another.

InfiniBand and Ethernet serve the cluster fabric

The cluster interconnect can be built with InfiniBand or with Ethernet. InfiniBand is commonly selected where tightly controlled latency, mature collective-communication features, and a purpose-built fabric are priorities. Ethernet offers a broad ecosystem and can integrate with existing data-center operations, but an AI deployment still needs loss-management, traffic engineering, and software tuned for synchronized workloads. The correct choice depends on scale, application libraries, operations skills, and the rest of the facility—not on a single headline bandwidth figure.

NVLink handles a different distance

NVLink is used inside a rack or node group, where the goal is extremely fast communication among accelerators. It does not replace the cluster network: data still has to cross the CIN when a job spans racks, and storage and service traffic still use their designated networks.

What current rack specifications show

NVIDIA’s DGX Grace Blackwell documentation describes an NVL72 rack containing 72 GPUs, liquid manifolds and cold plates for the CPUs and GPUs, and cluster-network interfaces rated at 400 Gb/s or 800 Gb/s. NVIDIA’s Blackwell announcement describes Quantum-X800 InfiniBand and Spectrum-X800 Ethernet platforms delivering up to 800 Gb/s for GB200 systems, alongside a 72-GPU liquid-cooled NVL72 rack. These are specifications for particular NVIDIA architectures, not a universal requirement for every AI installation.

Why can’t ordinary air cooling handle every AI rack?

Cooling capacity follows heat output: nearly every watt consumed by an accelerator eventually appears as heat that the facility must remove. As more high-power devices are packed into a rack, air must move faster and across tighter temperature limits. Fans, raised-floor distribution, and room-level cooling can become inefficient, uneven, or physically incapable of carrying the required heat away.

Air cooling remains practical for lower-density equipment and for some rack components, but a dense accelerator rack may require liquid at the device itself. NVIDIA’s rack guidance sends coolant through manifolds and cold plates attached to CPUs and GPUs, while fans continue to cool certain networking and storage components. The result is a hybrid system rather than an assumption that every component is submerged or connected to a cold plate.

How much facility electricity goes to cooling?

The International Energy Agency estimates that cooling uses about 7% of electricity in efficient hyperscale data centers and more than 30% in less-efficient enterprise facilities. Servers average about 60% of consumption, while networking equipment can account for up to 5%. These are facility-type ranges, not fixed ratios: climate, utilization, cooling design, and measurement boundaries change the result.

Which cooling method is appropriate for an AI data center?

Operators normally combine methods according to rack density, retrofit limits, water policy, and maintenance capability.

Method How heat is removed Strengths Constraints to plan for
Air cooling Fans move room air through heat sinks to computer-room air handlers or similar systems. Familiar maintenance, straightforward replacement of standard servers, and no liquid near electronics. Lower heat-removal capacity per rack; airflow balance, fan power, and room temperature become limiting at high density.
Rear-door heat exchanger A liquid-cooled coil on the rack door captures exhaust heat before it enters the room. Can improve dense-rack performance while retaining air-cooled servers. Adds door weight and plumbing; the rack still depends on server fans and compatible airflow.
Direct-to-chip liquid Cold plates transfer heat from CPUs and GPUs to a coolant loop; a coolant-distribution unit (CDU) exchanges heat with the facility loop. High heat-removal capability and more uniform device temperatures. Requires manifolds, leak detection, fluid-quality control, service procedures, and coordination with rack power and controls.
Immersion cooling Servers are placed in a dielectric fluid that absorbs heat directly. Very high density and potentially low fan use. Fluid compatibility, tank handling, component service, and retrofit complexity can be substantial.

A site may use direct-to-chip cooling for the GPUs, air or rear-door exchangers for networking equipment, and conventional room systems for storage and support hardware. The design should state which components are liquid cooled, where heat is exchanged, and how a failed pump, valve, or leak is isolated without shutting down unrelated racks.

How does direct-to-chip liquid cooling work?

A typical loop uses a CDU to regulate flow, temperature, pressure, and heat exchange between the technology coolant and the facility water circuit. Supply lines feed a rack manifold; branch lines deliver coolant to cold plates on CPUs and GPUs; return lines carry warmed fluid back to the CDU. Sensors and controls watch temperature, flow, pressure, and fluid quality.

  1. Condition the coolant: The CDU maintains the required temperature and separates the technology loop from the building loop.
  2. Distribute it at the rack: Manifolds balance flow among cold plates and provide isolation points for service.
  3. Capture device heat: Cold plates transfer heat from processor packages into the liquid while fans handle components that lack cold plates.
  4. Reject heat to the facility: The CDU transfers heat to a facility-water circuit, fluid cooler, or other heat-rejection equipment.
  5. Monitor and respond: Controls detect abnormal temperature, pressure, or flow and can throttle or shut down affected equipment before damage occurs.

Schneider Electric’s reference design for AI facilities combines liquid-to-liquid CDUs, fluid coolers, electrical distribution, controls integration, and methods for measuring AI rack power profiles. That integrated approach is important because a cooling loop sized without the rack’s actual electrical profile can become the next bottleneck.

Why does an AI data center need abundant and reliable power?

Accelerator clusters draw substantial baseline power and can change demand quickly as jobs start, stop, or move between training and inference phases. The electrical system therefore has to provide both enough total energy and enough ramp response, ride-through, and redundancy to keep the cluster within its operating limits.

What the latest demand projections imply

The International Energy Agency projects global data-center electricity use to rise from about 485 TWh in 2025 to 950 TWh in 2030, roughly doubling. It projects electricity consumption from AI-focused data centers to triple over the same period. Those are global projections, not a forecast for every site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same analysis reports that AI-server power density increased elevenfold between 2020 and 2025 and could increase another fourfold by 2027. Under that projection, an advanced rack could have peak demand equivalent to 65 households. The household comparison is an illustration of peak rack demand, not a statement about continuous average consumption.

Why storage is part of the power design

Rapid workload changes can create short, steep power swings that are difficult for a utility connection or on-site generation to follow economically. The IEA estimates that 20–25 GW of battery storage could be installed in data centers globally by 2030. Batteries can provide ride-through, ramp support, peak shaving, and a bridge during generator or grid transitions, but their usable duration and recharge requirements must match the site’s reliability strategy.

Regional grid impact

For the United States, a 2025 Department of Energy/Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory update estimates that data centers could consume 11.8% of total electricity by 2030, with a scenario range of 9.5% to 15.3%. The range reflects uncertainty in deployment, efficiency, and workload growth; it should not be treated as a guaranteed national share.

What equipment makes up the power path?

Power planning follows the path from the grid to the accelerator package, including conversion losses and backup operation.

Layer Role in an AI facility Key design questions
Utility interconnection Supplies the site’s long-term capacity. How much firm capacity is available, when can it be connected, and what curtailment rules apply?
Transformers and switchgear Step voltage down and distribute it safely to buildings and halls. Are ratings, fault levels, protection settings, and maintenance bypasses adequate?
UPS systems Bridge short interruptions and stabilize power during transfers. What autonomy, redundancy, efficiency curve, and recharge time are required?
Generators and fuel systems Provide longer-duration backup when the grid is unavailable. Can they start and synchronize fast enough, and are fuel, emissions, and testing provisions in place?
Batteries and energy storage Handle fast ramps, ride-through, and sometimes peak management. How much power versus energy is needed, and how will storage coordinate with UPS and generators?
Rack-level distribution Delivers conditioned power to servers, switches, pumps, and fans. Are busways, PDUs, breakers, monitoring, and thermal limits matched to the rack’s peak profile?

How are networking, cooling, and electricity connected?

They form a feedback loop rather than three independent budgets.

  1. More accelerators create more traffic. Adding GPUs increases collective-communication flows and the number of switch ports, optical links, and power supplies.
  2. More accelerators raise electrical demand. The rack’s steady load grows, and synchronized jobs can produce fast changes in demand.
  3. Electrical demand becomes heat. The same additional watts must be removed through heat sinks, cold plates, CDUs, pumps, fans, and facility heat rejection.
  4. Thermal limits affect performance. If coolant temperature, flow, or room conditions exceed limits, devices throttle or the operator must reduce rack density.
  5. Network congestion wastes thermal and electrical capacity. When GPUs wait for communication, the facility is paying to power underused hardware; better fabric design can raise useful work without adding racks.
  6. Controls coordinate the whole system. Telemetry can schedule workloads, shift non-urgent jobs, or curtail selected racks when power or cooling headroom is temporarily constrained.

For that reason, reference designs treat the compute sleds, network fabric, liquid loop, electrical distribution, controls, and facility heat rejection as one engineered system.

What should operators compare when choosing an AI infrastructure design?

Decision axis Questions to answer before deployment
Communication scope and latency Which traffic stays inside a rack on NVLink, and which crosses the cluster fabric? What bandwidth, latency, topology, congestion control, and scale are required by the workloads?
Thermal method Will air, rear-door exchangers, direct-to-chip liquid, immersion, or a hybrid remove the peak heat? What are the water, maintenance, leak-control, and retrofit implications?
Power architecture Can utility service, transformers, UPS, generators, batteries, and rack distribution support both continuous and transient demand with the desired redundancy?
Operational integration Are power, temperature, flow, network counters, and workload states visible in one control system? Can jobs be shifted or curtailed without violating service-level objectives?
Expansion and serviceability Can additional racks be added without exceeding switch-port, CDU, pipe, transformer, or generator limits? Can technicians isolate one rack safely?

What are the common failure modes, and how can teams prevent them?

  • GPU underutilization despite fast accelerators: Check collective-operation time, link errors, oversubscribed paths, and congestion before buying more GPUs. Separate management and tenant traffic from the cluster fabric.
  • Thermal throttling at high utilization: Verify coolant flow and temperature at the rack, manifold balance, cold-plate contact, and heat-rejection capacity. Confirm that air-cooled switches and storage devices are not being overlooked.
  • Unexpected power trips: Compare measured startup and workload transients with breaker, UPS, PDU, and transformer ratings. Configure staged startup or workload limits rather than assuming the nameplate average is the peak.
  • Cooling leaks or fluid alarms: Use isolation valves, leak detection, compatible materials, documented drain-and-fill procedures, and tested emergency shutdown logic. A liquid system needs service procedures as rigorous as its electrical procedures.
  • Insufficient expansion headroom: Model the complete path—utility, switchgear, transformers, UPS, batteries, pumps, CDUs, pipes, switch ports, and heat rejection—before committing to a rack count.
  • Controls that cannot react quickly enough: Integrate telemetry from servers, switches, power meters, pumps, and environmental sensors with workload scheduling. Static limits are safer than no controls, but coordinated automation makes more of the installed capacity usable.

Does every AI data center require an 800 Gb/s fabric and liquid cooling?

No. The 400 Gb/s and 800 Gb/s interfaces and 72-GPU liquid-cooled rack cited above describe specific high-end NVIDIA systems. A smaller inference cluster, a fine-tuning environment, or a mixed enterprise facility may have lower communication and thermal requirements. The appropriate design follows model size, parallelism, rack density, uptime target, climate, available utility capacity, and the operator’s ability to maintain liquid systems.

What is the practical takeaway for a new build?

Start with workload measurements rather than a generic rack count: communication volume and synchronization pattern determine the fabric, accelerator power and density determine the thermal loop, and both together determine the electrical profile. Size utility service, UPS, storage, cooling distribution, and heat rejection for measured peaks plus expansion margin. Then validate the design with telemetry and failure tests before filling the hall, because a network, cooling, or power shortfall can strand the other two investments.

Frequently asked questions

Can an existing air-cooled data hall be converted for AI?

Sometimes, but the limiting element may be structural, electrical, or thermal rather than the server itself. Teams must verify floor loading, rack power distribution, pipe routes, CDU placement, heat-rejection capacity, and service clearances; a rear-door exchanger or a partial liquid retrofit may be more practical than converting every rack.

Why does inference also need fast networking if it is not training?

Large inference services often shard a model across multiple accelerators and exchange activations during each request. Latency-sensitive requests can therefore suffer from a slow or congested fabric even when the model is no longer updating its weights.

Does liquid cooling always reduce total data-center energy use?

Liquid can remove more heat from a dense rack, but pumps, CDUs, fluid coolers, and controls consume energy too. The net result depends on the design, climate, operating temperatures, and how much fan and room-cooling power the liquid loop displaces.

How should workload scheduling respond to power limits?

Expose rack-level power and thermal headroom to the scheduler, then prioritize jobs by service-level objective. Non-urgent training can be delayed, moved to a cooler or less-constrained cluster, or paused during a short power event, while interactive inference receives reserved capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the IEA percentages valid for every facility?

No. The IEA figures are estimates that vary with facility type and scenario. Hyperscale sites, enterprise rooms, regional climates, utilization levels, and the accounting boundary used for cooling can produce materially different shares.
