Our one-shot AST sanitizer failed because it combined too many responsibilities inside one short-lived process: starting a deadline, loading dependencies, reading untrusted JSON, parsing Python, rewriting arbitrary syntax trees, unparsing the result, validating diagnostics and serializing a response. Synthetic tests made that design look dependable; production workloads exposed startup costs, pathological inputs, signal-handling hazards and the mistaken assumption that sanitization is an execution boundary.
The durable fix is architectural, not a cleverer tree transform. Validate and size-limit input before deep work, enforce explicit AST complexity and language policies, reject and regenerate code that violates them, execute accepted code only in pre-warmed least-privilege sandbox workers, and let a supervisor own timeout and kill decisions. Independent scanning, observability and human review remain necessary because model output is untrusted input.

The middleware accepted JSON from sys.stdin.buffer, validated the request with Pydantic v2, parsed Python with ast.parse, modified nodes through ast.NodeTransformer, repaired location metadata with ast.fix_missing_locations(), converted the tree back to source with ast.unparse(), and returned a schema-validated response through orjson. A 10-second signal.SIGALRM deadline was armed at process entry.
That sequence looks like a clean pipeline, but it created a single failure domain. Interpreter startup, imports, model setup, input reads, parsing, transformation, unparsing, diagnostics and output serialization all competed for the same absolute budget. A timeout during any phase could leave no useful result and little diagnostic context.

The postmortem author describes the premise this way: “The premise of cleaning LLM code in-flight through AST rewriting is conceptually elegant, but in practice, real-world runtime environments punish naive implementations.” The account is a practitioner postmortem, not a controlled benchmark; it reports no published incident rate, production sample size or failure percentage.
Why did the 10-second deadline fail in production?
The deadline began before the process was ready to perform the operation it was supposed to measure. Cold interpreter startup, imports, Pydantic initialization, reading a large request and serializing a response consumed time that should have been reserved for policy evaluation.
Cold-start time was charged to scanning
A hard deadline measured wall-clock time from process entry rather than the bounded validation task. On a warm, small test input, the difference was invisible. Under a cold start or a larger payload, the sanitizer could reach the alarm while still importing modules or reading bytes. The result was a timeout that said little about AST work and offered no reliable service-level meaning.
Move readiness out of the request budget. Load dependencies, construct validators and initialize worker state before accepting jobs. Start the per-job timer only after the supervisor has confirmed that the request is syntactically valid JSON, within the size limit and ready for policy evaluation.
Signal handlers were asked to do ordinary work
A signal callback is an unsafe place to allocate objects, format diagnostics, serialize JSON or write to a pipe. The postmortem recommends that a handler set a flag or terminate, while normal control flow performs allocation, serialization and output. Keeping the callback minimal prevents a timeout from interrupting code in the middle of a non-reentrant operation.

The supervisor should therefore own the timeout decision. A worker can receive a cancellation indication, but the process that launches and monitors it should decide when to stop waiting and when to kill the worker. That separation gives the system one authoritative clock and leaves the worker’s cleanup path deterministic.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How can AST rewriting become a reliability problem?
Parsing and rewriting are not constant-time string substitutions. They expose the implementation to the shape and size of an attacker- or model-controlled syntax tree. Deep nesting, very large node counts and unusual combinations of expressions can make traversal, reconstruction or unparsing expensive even when the source appears small.
Unparsing adds another complex phase
ast.unparse() must reconstruct valid source from the modified tree. Rebuilding arbitrary trees can trigger failures or high resource use in the parser/compiler toolchain, especially when a transformer creates unexpected combinations of nodes or receives malformed location data. Calling ast.fix_missing_locations() repairs metadata; it does not make a tree safe, bounded or semantically correct.
Set limits before transformation
Reject payloads that exceed explicit limits for:
- Input bytes and decoded string length.
- Maximum AST depth, measured during a bounded walk.
- Total node count, including operator and context nodes.
- Permitted Python language version and syntax features.
- Import statements, attribute access and callable names.
- Literal sizes and nesting of containers or comprehensions.
Check these properties immediately after parsing and before any mutation. A limit breach should produce a structured rejection and, where appropriate, request regeneration rather than attempting to simplify the tree in place.
Why is sanitization not an execution boundary?
AST inspection can identify syntax and some obvious policy violations, but it cannot guarantee what a program will do at runtime. Dynamic imports, reflection, data-dependent control flow, resource exhaustion and behavior in libraries all lie beyond a simple source rewrite. Even a perfect policy for the tree would not provide operating-system isolation.

OWASP guidance treats input screening as one layer rather than a security boundary and calls for layered validation, monitoring, human review and least privilege. OWASP AISVS states: “Treating model output as untrusted input is the single most important principle in this section.” Apply that principle to source code, generated configuration, tool arguments, logs, dashboards, webhooks and serialized artifacts—not just the string that first entered the parser.
Should you rewrite generated code or reject and regenerate it?
For arbitrary LLM output, rejection followed by constrained regeneration is usually easier to reason about than silently changing program meaning. AST rewriting can still be useful for narrow, well-specified transformations, but it should not be the only control protecting execution.
| Approach | Security boundary | Semantic coverage | Parser complexity exposure | Latency and cold starts | Timeout reliability | Observability | False-positive handling | Operational cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| One-shot AST rewriting | None; inspection only | Can alter selected syntax, but may miss runtime behavior | High: arbitrary trees and unparsing remain in the request path | Unpredictable when startup and rewriting share one deadline | Fragile when signals interrupt ordinary work | Often poor because failure can occur before diagnostics serialize | Risk of changing valid intent or hiding why code was changed | Low initial footprint, high incident and maintenance risk |
| Reject and regenerate | None by itself; still requires isolation for execution | Preserves accepted source semantics | Lower after bounded validation because rejected trees are not reconstructed | Regeneration adds model latency but avoids repeated risky repair | Supervisable as separate validation and generation jobs | Clear rejection reasons can be attached to each attempt | Policies can be tuned, allowlisted or routed to review | Model retries and policy engineering are ongoing costs |
| Sandboxed execution | Process, container or VM isolation with least privilege | Controls runtime effects rather than proving source safety | Still requires bounded parsing for admission | Pre-warmed workers reduce cold-start variance | Supervisor can enforce a kill deadline independently | Resource, syscall and exit telemetry can be retained | Failures can be quarantined without changing source | Highest infrastructure and monitoring cost, strongest containment |
The practical design combines the latter two: reject code that violates explicit policy, then run accepted code in an isolated worker. Do not present a transformed source file as proof that execution is safe.
What replacement pipeline should you implement?
A reliable service separates admission, policy, execution and reporting. The following order keeps each phase bounded and makes failures attributable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Accept and size-check the envelope. Read a bounded number of bytes, reject malformed JSON and refuse requests above the configured maximum before expensive decoding.
- Validate the schema. Use Pydantic v2 or an equivalent validator to require the expected fields and types. Reject unknown or structurally ambiguous data according to the API contract.
- Parse with an explicit language target. Call
ast.parsewith the supported Python feature level. Catch syntax errors and return a machine-readable reason; do not attempt a partial tree. - Measure complexity. Walk the tree with an iterative or otherwise bounded algorithm, counting nodes and tracking depth. Reject over-limit trees before transformation or unparsing.
- Apply a deny-by-default policy. Decide which imports, calls, attributes, file operations, networking interfaces and dynamic features are permitted. Keep the policy explicit and versioned.
- Scan independently. Run a tool such as Bandit alongside the AST policy. Record findings, severity, rule identifiers and scanner version; treat the scanner as another signal, not a substitute for isolation.
- Choose an outcome. Accept only code that satisfies every admission rule, reject with actionable reasons, or send the request through a regeneration loop that includes the rejection feedback.
- Dispatch to a pre-warmed worker. The worker should have only the filesystem, network, credentials and CPU or memory budget required for the task.
- Enforce execution limits externally. A supervisor owns wall-clock, CPU, memory, output-size and process-count limits and can terminate the worker without relying on in-process cleanup.
- Validate every output context. Escape or structure results for the destination—API response, log, dashboard, webhook or artifact store—before publishing them.
How should sandbox workers and supervisors be arranged?
Use persistent, pre-warmed workers so imports and runtime initialization happen outside the per-request deadline. Keep the worker’s privileges narrow: no ambient cloud credentials, no writable host filesystem, and no network access unless a documented feature requires it. Separate tenants or trust levels when generated programs can access different data.

The supervisor should assign a job identifier, start a monotonic deadline, stream bounded output, and collect exit status and resource counters. If the worker exceeds a limit, terminate it and mark the result as a policy or resource failure rather than allowing a stuck process to occupy the queue. Recycle workers after a defined number of jobs or after suspicious resource behavior to limit state leakage.
Signals still have a role, but only as a small part of this design. A handler may set a cancellation flag or perform immediate termination; ordinary code should notice cancellation at safe points and write final diagnostics through normal control flow. The supervisor remains the authority when a worker stops responding.
What evidence shows about specification and independent scanning?
A 2026 evaluation of 500 generated outputs reported 53 medium-or-high Bandit issues in the bare arm and 11 in the specification-frame arm. That result supports writing explicit specifications before generation and adding independent scanning, but it is not a direct test of this sanitizer or a production reliability benchmark. The counts came from that evaluation’s authors and conditions, not from the postmortem deployment.

Keep source hashes and policy versions rather than raw sensitive code where possible. Correlate logs across the supervisor, validator, scanner and worker so an operator can reconstruct one decision without trusting a partially serialized response.
How do you troubleshoot common failure symptoms?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Timeouts occur before a parse result exists | Deadline includes startup or input reads | Pre-warm dependencies and start the job timer after bounded admission. |
| Timeout responses are malformed or missing | Signal interrupted serialization or output writes | Keep handlers minimal; let the supervisor emit the final status. |
| Small source files consume excessive CPU or memory | Deep nesting, huge node counts or pathological unparse work | Enforce depth, node, literal and output limits before transformation. |
| Blocked imports reappear under another spelling | Policy checks names but not attributes, aliases or runtime behavior | Use deny-by-default rules, normalize aliases and rely on sandbox containment. |
| Valid programs are repeatedly regenerated | Policy is too broad or scanner findings are not triaged | Version rules, measure false positives and route ambiguous cases to review. |
| A rejected program still affects systems | Validation was mistaken for isolation or an artifact was trusted downstream | Execute only in least-privilege workers and validate every output context. |
What is the central lesson from the postmortem?
The postmortem’s design lesson is separation of concerns. Its author summarizes the target architecture: “When building deterministic guardrails for LLM code generators, reliability comes from strict separation of concerns: run validation inside persistent, sandboxed workers, keep signal handlers reentrant, and favor hard rejection over in-place AST reconstruction.”
One process can parse code, but it should not also be your deadline clock, parser stress target, serializer and security boundary. Make admission bounded, make policy explicit, make rejection explainable, and make execution disposable. That arrangement costs more infrastructure than a one-shot transformer, but it turns unpredictable failures into observable decisions that can be regenerated, reviewed or contained.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a valid Python AST prove that generated code is harmless?
No. An AST proves that source conforms to the parser and whatever static rules you wrote; it does not prove safe library behavior, bounded resource use or harmless runtime effects. Treat static acceptance as an admission decision before isolated execution, not as a safety certificate.
How should regeneration feedback be phrased for an LLM?
Return stable, machine-readable rule identifiers with the offending construct and a concise replacement requirement. Avoid sending secrets, full environment details or ambiguous prose; version the policy so retries can be compared when rules change.
What should happen when a legitimate program exceeds an AST limit?
Do not silently raise the global limit. Route the request to a separately governed review path or a stricter trust tier with its own worker profile, justification and audit record.
Do pre-warmed workers remove the need for timeouts?
No. Warm workers reduce startup variance but can still hang, leak state or exhaust resources. Keep independent wall-clock, CPU, memory, output and lifecycle controls in the supervisor.
