The clearest non-monster-looking choices in WoW: Forever are Human, Dwarf, Gnome, Night Elf, and Skyborne. That is an appearance-based judgment, not an official Blizzard category. The first four are Alliance races; Skyborne can choose Alliance or Horde but requires the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher upgrade. As of the roster information published through October 29, 2026, WoW: Forever is scheduled to launch November 4, 2026; check Blizzard’s current announcement before relying on prelaunch dates or availability.
What does “non-monster” mean in WoW: Forever?
There is no official “non-monster” race category in Blizzard’s announced WoW: Forever roster. The useful answer depends on what you mean: if you want a character that reads most plainly as human, dwarf, gnome, or elf-like, five choices stand out—Human, Dwarf, Gnome, Night Elf, and Skyborne. If you mean a playable character with a humanoid shape, you may also consider Orcs, Trolls, Tauren, or Undead. Those are aesthetic distinctions, not Blizzard rules about which races count as monsters.

The tables organize playable choices; they do not declare some races more or less monstrous than others.
That distinction matters when choosing a character. Someone who wants a conventional fantasy elf has Night Elf as an announced option without needing a Skyborne upgrade. Someone who mainly wants an elf-like appearance but also wants to play Horde should look at Skyborne: it is the roster’s cross-faction option, rather than a reason to assume that a Horde Blood Elf is available.

Which races are the closest fit for a humanlike or elf-like character?
For the most straightforward match, choose Human for a human character, Night Elf for an established elf-like character, or Skyborne for the new cross-faction elf-like option. Dwarf and Gnome are other clearly humanoid choices, with different character scale and fantasy presentation.

The classes above are the entries in Blizzard’s published race-and-class matrix, not a promise that every race can play every class. Blizzard’s chart explains that “An X indicates that the listed race can choose that class.” Use the matrix when a particular class is non-negotiable: appearance and faction alone do not tell you whether the pairing is allowed.
Can I play a human or an elf?
Yes. Humans are on the Alliance roster, and Night Elves are the announced Alliance elf-like race. Skyborne is another elf-like choice and is the only race in the published table that can align with either Alliance or Horde.
If you want to make the decision without buying an optional upgrade, Human or Night Elf is the clearer fit for those specific appearances, and Dwarf or Gnome are also available through the Alliance roster. If you want an elf-like character on Horde, Skyborne is the documented route in the announced roster. Do not substitute Blood Elf based on familiarity with other versions of World of Warcraft: Blood Elves are not listed in this WoW: Forever race chart.

There is a practical class trade-off within the elf-like choices. Night Elf’s listed classes are Druid, Hunter, Priest, Rogue, and Warrior. Skyborne shares Druid, Hunter, Rogue, and Warrior across both factions; Mage is additionally listed for Alliance Skyborne, while Shaman is additionally listed for Horde Skyborne. So if your first choice is a class that appears on only one side of that comparison, check faction and race together before settling on the character.
Can Horde players choose an elf-like race?
Yes, through Skyborne, provided the account has the required upgrade. Blizzard lists Skyborne under both faction tables, so a Skyborne character can choose Alliance or Horde at character creation; the class options differ by faction.
This is not the same as saying that every elf-like race is available to Horde. Night Elf is listed as Alliance, while the announced roster does not list Blood Elves. If playing with friends is the priority, first confirm the faction they intend to choose, then check whether Skyborne’s appearance and class options suit you. If you do not want the Skyborne purchase requirement, the announced roster does not provide a standard Horde elf-like alternative.
Do I have to buy Skyborne access?
Yes. Skyborne requires the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher upgrade; a World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time alone provides base game access, not Skyborne access. You do not need that upgrade to create a Human, Dwarf, Gnome, or Night Elf.

Blizzard’s edition distinction is important: the Heroic Pack is the entry-level upgrade that unlocks Skyborne and Zephras Isle. The Epic Pack adds benefits including 30 days of Game Time, and the Warcraft Forever Collection adds Warcraft III content. These are digital upgrades. The extra benefits do not change the basic race decision: if your goal is specifically to play Skyborne, the Heroic Pack or higher is the stated requirement; if you want one of the four Alliance races listed above, that is not a prerequisite.
Blizzard states that “World of Warcraft, including World of Warcraft: Forever, requires World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time.” In other words, the upgrade is not a replacement for the base access requirement. Before purchasing, distinguish the subscription or Game Time needed to play from the optional edition upgrade needed for Skyborne. The physical Collector’s Edition is a separate product and is not a requirement for either access or race selection.

How should you choose between these five options?
Use four checks, in this order: preferred appearance, faction, class, and whether Skyborne’s upgrade cost is acceptable. That sequence avoids choosing a race for its look and discovering later that it does not fit the faction or class you want.
- Start with the look you want. Choose Human for a straightforward human character; Dwarf or Gnome for those fantasy archetypes; Night Elf for the announced Alliance elf-like option; or Skyborne if you prefer its elf-like look and want the cross-faction choice.
- Check where your friends plan to play. Human, Dwarf, Gnome, and Night Elf are Alliance. Skyborne can select either faction. If you specifically want Horde and do not want the Skyborne upgrade, the five closest-fit choices narrow substantially: the other four are Alliance-only.
- Check your intended class in the official matrix. Race does not guarantee access to every class. For example, the Skyborne chart differs by faction: Mage is listed for Alliance Skyborne and Shaman for Horde Skyborne, while Druid, Hunter, Rogue, and Warrior are listed for both. Make sure the exact combination appears rather than inferring it from a neighboring race.
- Decide whether Skyborne is worth the separate upgrade. If you want Night Elf, Human, Dwarf, or Gnome, the Skyborne gate is irrelevant. If you want Skyborne, factor the Heroic Pack-or-higher requirement into the choice before creating a character.
The matrix also highlights six newly available existing-race/class pairings: Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Gnome Priest, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, and Undead Paladin. Only the first three are among the five approachable-looking choices discussed here, but the additions are useful if your choice is driven as much by class as by appearance. The highlighted pairings are not a claim that the full class roster has changed for every race; the chart is the authority for each combination.

What races are in the announced roster—and which familiar ones are absent?
The announced roster contains nine distinct races: Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, Skyborne, Orc, Tauren, Troll, and Undead. Skyborne appears in both faction groupings but is one race, not two. The official tables do not separately list Blood Elves, Draenei, or other races associated with later expansions.
That is a statement about the announced WoW: Forever roster, not a guarantee about every future addition. The available chart supports saying that these races are absent from the current published tables; it does not establish that Blizzard has ruled out all future races. For a launch character, however, use the announced list rather than assuming another race will be available because it appears in another World of Warcraft version or expansion.

No. The physical World of Warcraft: Forever Collector’s Edition is optional merchandise, not a race unlock or a prerequisite for playing. Blizzard documented a package containing a 13-inch Dwarf and Bear statue, a Zephras Isle mousepad, art prints, collectible pins, a companion journal, and a digital collection code.

Blizzard said copies from its September restock were expected to ship in February 2027, after launch. That is a shipping expectation, not confirmation of current stock or delivery timing. Check the official store for availability if you want the physical package; do not confuse it with the digital Heroic Pack requirement for Skyborne. The included statue and accessories are collector items, while the question of which character race you can play is answered by the digital roster and upgrade rules.
What is the simplest recommendation?
If you want a humanlike or elf-like character without an extra race-specific upgrade, choose among Human, Dwarf, Gnome, and Night Elf on Alliance. If you want an elf-like character and want the choice of Horde or Alliance, consider Skyborne, but only after accounting for the Heroic Pack-or-higher requirement. If you are open to a more overtly fantastical look, Orc, Tauren, Troll, and Undead are also on the announced roster, and whether they count as “monsters” is a matter of personal taste.
Before committing, verify two things in Blizzard’s current information: your exact race/class pairing and the edition that grants the access you need. Those checks resolve the main surprises—faction restrictions and Skyborne’s separate upgrade—without treating “non-monster” as a formal game category.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will WoW: Forever add more races after launch?
The announced race tables do not establish what may be added later. They show the launch roster described in the available announcement; absence from that roster is not proof that Blizzard has ruled out every future addition.
Are the newly highlighted class pairings the only classes those races can play?
No. The highlighted combinations call attention to six pairings, but they are not a replacement for the full race-and-class matrix. Use the matrix to confirm all available classes for a particular race.
Does the Skyborne Heroic Pack include the subscription needed to play?
Blizzard’s access statement treats a World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time as necessary for WoW: Forever, while the Heroic Pack is an upgrade that unlocks Skyborne and Zephras Isle. The Epic Pack is the tier described as adding 30 days of Game Time.
