For most buyers, the best used PlayStation 2 is not simply the one labeled “fat” or “Slim”: it is a tested console whose full SCPH model number and regional suffix match the games, accessories, and TV setup you plan to use. Choose a compatible later fat model if you specifically need the expansion bay and HDD ecosystem; choose a Slim if compact size matters more. Before paying, confirm that your own target game reaches playable gameplay and that the controller, memory card, video connection, and included accessories work.

What should you check first when buying a used PS2?

Start with the complete model number on the console’s label, including its regional suffix. “Fat” and “Slim” are useful descriptions of size and design, but they do not tell you whether a particular hard drive, multitap, remote, or other accessory will work. Sony’s documentation is model-specific, and accessory compatibility can differ even between consoles that look similar.

Before agreeing to buy, establish four things: the console’s exact model and region; whether it can play the particular game discs you care about; whether the included controller, memory card, and video cable function; and whether the seller will let you test the setup or return it if it does not work as described. A power light or a menu screen is not proof that the disc drive can load and play a game.

What do the PS2 model numbers mean?

The broad buying guide is straightforward: earlier, larger “fat” systems run through the SCPH-50000 families, while Slim systems run from SCPH-70000 through SCPH-90000. That shorthand is a starting point, not a complete compatibility answer. Check the full model number on the actual unit, not just the seller’s listing title.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.

Family What to know Most relevant buying consideration
Fat: SCPH-10000 through SCPH-50000 Multiple revisions share the larger chassis. Later families such as SCPH-30000, SCPH-39000, and SCPH-50000 are the key ones to investigate if you want the expansion-bay/HDD setup. Do not assume that every fat PS2 supports the same add-ons. Confirm the exact family and the accessories required for your intended setup.
Slim: SCPH-70000 through SCPH-90000 These systems have a smaller footprint and a different storage and accessory trade-off from the fat systems. SCPH-90000 is a late retail Slim family; its power supply is internal. Good fit when compactness matters, but check the revision and regional suffix before buying accessories.

Sony’s service specification for the covered SCPH-30000, SCPH-35000, SCPH-39000, and SCPH-50000 fat families lists two controller ports, two memory-card slots, two USB ports, one S400/i.LINK port, and one HDD-by-slot connection. This tells you what Sony documents for those covered families; it is not a claim that every PS2 revision has every connection or supports every accessory. If HDD use is the reason you want a fat console, verify the console and the specific hardware you intend to use before purchase.

Is a fat PS2 or a Slim better to buy used?

Neither form factor is universally better. A later compatible fat console suits buyers who specifically want its expansion-bay/HDD ecosystem or prefer the larger design; a Slim is the more natural choice when smaller size and integrated networking matter more. Condition, disc compatibility, and completeness matter more than the form-factor label for a typical game-playing setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an expansion-bay requirement, look at the exact fat family rather than buying any machine advertised as “fat.” Sony’s service documentation covers the HDD-by-slot connection on SCPH-30000, SCPH-35000, SCPH-39000, and SCPH-50000 families. If you do not have a reason to use that setup, the existence of the bay alone is not a reason to accept a poorly tested console.

For a compact setup, the Slim families span SCPH-70000 to SCPH-90000. Sony’s SCPH-90002/90003 guide gives approximate dimensions of 230 × 28 × 152 mm and approximate power consumption of 35 W. Those are figures for the cited SCPH-90002/90003 family, not a guarantee for every Slim model. The same guide describes an internal power supply for the SCPH-90000 family, so check the power hardware and cable included with the exact console rather than extrapolating from a different revision.

Will a used PS2 play your games and DVDs?

Confirm both the console’s regional identity and the discs you want to use. A manual for one regional model is not proof that every PS2 accepts every game or DVD in the same way. If you are buying for specific discs, ask the seller to test those discs—or take one along and test it yourself—with the console and display setup you will actually use.

Sony’s cited SCPH-90004 guide lists compatibility with PlayStation 2 format DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, DVD+R/DVD+RW, DVD-R/DVD-RW in supported modes, PlayStation 2 format CD-ROM, PlayStation format CD-ROM, and audio CD. The guide also cautions that some PlayStation or PlayStation 2 software may perform differently on that console than on earlier systems. Treat this as a useful list for the cited model, not a blanket compatibility guarantee for every region and revision.

Test the games that matter to you, especially if they are imported, CD-based, or known to have compatibility concerns. A console booting one ordinary game does not demonstrate that it will read every disc format in your collection. Check that a game proceeds past its opening screen into playable gameplay, and, if possible, test more than one of your target discs.

DVD playback has a regional qualification too: Sony’s SCPH-90004 guide specifies PAL broadcast-standard DVD playback for that cited console. Match the console’s region, the game or DVD, and the television setup you plan to use. Do not assume a listing that says “PS2” tells you enough to predict how an imported disc will behave.

Which memory card works with a PS2?

For PlayStation 2 game saves, look for a memory card clearly identified as a PlayStation 2 8MB memory card. Sony identifies its Memory Card (8MB) for PlayStation 2, model SCPH-10020 E, as approximately 8 MB and intended for PlayStation 2 format software. Test the card by creating a save and loading it again before relying on it.

A PlayStation 1 memory card is a different product. Sony’s guide identifies the SCPH-1020 E Memory Card for original PlayStation format software as 15 memory blocks, approximately 120 KB, and notes that it is no longer manufactured. Do not assume that a PS1 card can substitute for a PS2 card, or that a card described only as “memory card” is the correct type for your saves. If you want to play and save both PS1 and PS2 games, plan for the appropriate card for each format.

When a seller includes a card, do not stop at checking that it appears in the console’s browser. Insert it, create a new save in a game, return to the game, and verify that the save can be loaded. If the purchase is remote, ask the seller to demonstrate this or make sure the return terms give you time to check it at home.

What accessories should come with a used PS2?

Build the price comparison around a complete, usable setup rather than the bare console. At minimum, consider the console, a working controller, a suitable PS2 memory card, the video cable needed for your TV, and the correct power hardware. Add optional items such as a multitap, DVD remote, stand, or Ethernet cable only if you have a use for them and have confirmed compatibility with your exact model.

Sony’s SCPH-90004 quick reference warns: “When purchasing optional accessories, be sure to purchase those that are compatible with this model of the PlayStation®2 console.” That warning matters because an accessory that fits the general PS2 category may still be wrong for a particular family. For the cited SCPH-90004 family, Sony specifies DVD remote SCPH-10420 E, which does not include a separate IR receiver, and multitap SCPH-70120 E. Sony warns that another multitap model number may damage the console.

The same SCPH-90004 documentation lists the SCPH-10350 E Network Adaptor, SCPH-10090 E Multitap, SCPH-1070 E Multitap, and several stand models as incompatible with that family. These details apply to the cited model family; do not copy the list to a North American SCPH-90001 or a different regional console without checking the manual for that exact model. The suffix is part of the compatibility check, not decoration.

Inspect a bundle’s inventory instead of relying on a vague phrase such as “complete set.” Ask the seller to list the controller, memory card, video cable, stand, multitap, remote, and power hardware separately. A missing item may be inexpensive to replace or may complicate the setup; the important point is to know what is actually included and whether each part suits your console and intended use.

How do you test a used PS2 before buying?

Ask for a demonstration that checks the console and the parts you will depend on. The test should reach playable gameplay with a target disc, not end at the power indicator or browser menu. For a remote purchase, request clear evidence and return terms that allow you to run your own checks when the console arrives.

  1. Confirm the label. Get a clear photograph of the full SCPH model number and regional suffix. Compare it with the listing and the accessories you plan to use.
  2. Test a relevant disc. Use a game from your own collection if practical. Confirm that the console reads it, loads into the game, and reaches playable gameplay. Test the specific disc types you care about rather than assuming one successful load proves broad compatibility.
  3. Check the controller. Test both controller ports if you expect to use both. Check the sticks and buttons, and test pressure-sensitive functions and vibration where applicable. If the bundle has more than one controller, test each one separately.
  4. Check the memory card. Have a game create a save, then load it. A card merely appearing in the system browser does not establish that it can reliably store and retrieve the save you need.
  5. Check the picture and cable. Connect the console using the cable and TV input you plan to use. Confirm that the picture is stable enough to play and that you know which input or connection your setup requires.
  6. Inspect the chassis and disc mechanism. Look for a cracked lid or hinge, a damaged tray, a missing expansion-bay cover where relevant, corrosion, heavy smoke residue, or unusual operating noise. For a Slim with a lid, check that it closes properly; for a tray-loading unit, check the tray’s operation.
  7. Verify the bundle. Match each promised item against what is present, and confirm that its model number is suitable for your console if it is a model-specific accessory.
  8. Agree on a return window. Give yourself enough time to try additional discs and accessories at home. Get the return terms in writing rather than treating an informal assurance as a substitute for a stated policy.

These checks establish the condition of the particular unit being sold. They do not prove that all consoles of the same revision have the same reliability or lifespan. The available evidence does not establish a universal defect rate, expected lifespan, or statistically validated “best” revision, so a tested individual console and meaningful return protection are more useful buying signals than a blanket claim about a model’s reliability.

Can a used PS2 connect to your TV and the internet?

For TV use, test the cable and input combination you actually expect to use. A console that powers on is not a complete setup if you cannot connect it to your display. Ask which video cable is included and demonstrate an image on a compatible screen before paying, or factor the required cable and any uncertainty into the decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Networking is a separate use case, not a standard requirement for every buyer. Sony’s SCPH-90002/90003 guide says online PS2 games require a network-compatible PS2 game, broadband Internet service, a commercially available Ethernet cable, and an 8MB PS2 memory card. If you want to use a particular online game, confirm its requirements and the network equipment needed for your exact console. Do not add an Ethernet cable to the bundle simply because a PS2 can have networking features.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How should you compare used PS2 listings?

Compare the total cost of a working setup, not just the console-only asking price. A listing with a low headline price may omit the controller, save card, or usable cable; a more complete and demonstrably working bundle may better meet your needs. No universal fair price for used PS2 hardware is established, so a single “right price” would be misleading.

Compare Question to ask
Console identity Is the complete SCPH number and regional suffix visible and consistent with the listing?
Target use Do you need a specific game, disc type, HDD setup, networking, or optional accessory?
Working essentials Have the disc drive, controller, memory card, video connection, and power hardware been checked?
Bundle completeness Which exact items are included, and are they compatible with this model?
Risk protection Can you return the system if your games or accessories fail at home?
Total setup cost What will shipping and any needed replacement parts add to the console price?

A useful listing is specific about the model, region, tested game, included items, visible flaws, and return policy. Be cautious if the seller cannot show the label, describes only a power-on test, or avoids saying whether the disc drive has played a game. Those gaps do not prove a console is faulty, but they leave important questions unanswered.

What is the safest choice for most buyers?

Choose the unit that best matches your actual use and has the clearest evidence of working condition. For a normal game-playing setup, prioritize a readable model label, a disc test with a relevant game, a working controller and memory card, a video connection you can use, and a return window. Pick a compatible later fat family for the expansion-bay/HDD goal; pick a Slim when compactness and a simpler setup are the priority. There is no evidence here for one revision being universally more reliable or a single used price being fair in every market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play a PS1 game on a PlayStation 2?

Sony’s cited SCPH-90004 guide includes PlayStation format CD-ROM among supported formats, but it also cautions that some PlayStation software may perform differently on that console than on earlier systems. If a particular PS1 title is the reason for your purchase, ask to test that title on the exact console rather than relying on a general compatibility label.

Do all PS2 consoles play imported games?

Do not assume that they do. Check the regional suffix, the disc’s region, and the matching documentation; a manual for one region does not establish compatibility for every console. For an import that matters to you, make the exact disc part of the purchase test.

Does a PS2 include everything needed to save games?

Not necessarily. A bundle may omit a memory card, so confirm that one is included and that it is an 8MB card intended for PS2-format saves. If you also plan to save original PlayStation games, account for the separate PS1-format memory card.

Can I use a PS2 Slim with a hard drive?

The HDD-by-slot documentation cited here covers specified fat families, including SCPH-30000, SCPH-35000, SCPH-39000, and SCPH-50000. It does not establish an equivalent expansion-bay setup for Slim models; check the exact console and intended hardware before buying for storage expansion.
