T-Mobile is the best major U.S. mobile network overall in PCMag’s 2026 Mobile Network Index. It leads the national ranking and wins most state and metropolitan comparisons, helped by the strongest combined results for speed, 5G reach, price, and reader satisfaction. AT&T and Verizon remain better choices in particular states, cities, or travel corridors, so a national winner is not a guarantee at your home or workplace.

The practical answer is to use the national ranking as a shortlist, then check local coverage, your phone’s supported bands, plan rules, and the performance you need. The sections below show where each carrier wins, why other studies reach different conclusions, and how to choose an affordable option without confusing a carrier’s network with the plan seller.

How was the 2026 U.S. mobile-network ranking calculated?

PCMag’s 2026 Mobile Network Index combines crowdsourced tests, mapped coverage and pricing data, and customer-satisfaction results. The sample contains 2,014,940 tests collected from January 1 through June 30, 2026. CoverageMap.com and BestPhonePlans supplied mapped speed, coverage, and pricing information, while PCMag added its Readers’ Choice satisfaction results.

Index component Weight What it represents
Speed Index 40% Measured network performance, including the speed results recorded in the test data
Coverage Index 20% Where service is available in the mapped results
Price Index 20% Relative pricing represented in the dataset
Reader Satisfaction Index 20% PCMag Readers’ Choice satisfaction responses

This is a weighted index, not a single laboratory speed test. The phone is half of the connectivity equation: PCMag recorded the device used in each test because modem capability, supported 5G bands, antenna design, and software can change the result. The figures are therefore best read as a national comparison of tested phones and plans during that six-month window, not as a promise for every handset or address.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Which mobile carrier ranks first nationally?

T-Mobile ranks first among the three major national carriers in the 2026 PCMag index. Its lead reflects the combined score rather than one isolated measurement.

National rank Carrier PCMag 2026 index score What the result means
1 T-Mobile 6.84 Highest combined result for speed, coverage, price, and reader satisfaction
2 AT&T 4.81 Second nationally, with wins in two states in the state-level analysis
3 Verizon 4.75 Close to AT&T nationally and first in two states and two major metro areas

The gap between the first-place score and the two other national scores is meaningful within this index, but it should not be interpreted as a universal speed difference at every location. A carrier can score lower nationwide while delivering the best signal inside a particular building, along a rural route, or in a city where its spectrum and backhaul are especially strong.

Where does each network win by state and major metro?

T-Mobile wins 45 states in PCMag’s state analysis. AT&T takes Arkansas and Oregon, while Verizon takes Vermont and Mississippi. Alaska is excluded because the test threshold was not met, so the index does not establish a winner there.

Geographic result Winner Qualification
States T-Mobile Best in 45 states
States AT&T Best in Arkansas and Oregon
States Verizon Best in Vermont and Mississippi
State not ranked Alaska Excluded because the testing threshold was not met
Major metros T-Mobile Best in 17 of 19 major metropolitan areas
Major metros Verizon Best in Detroit and the San Francisco Bay Area
Highest major-carrier metro index T-Mobile Chicago, with an index score of 8.32

These results answer “which network is best where I live?” only at the level of the listed state or metro. Neighborhood-level terrain, building materials, tower loading, and the phone in your hand can reverse the order. If you live near a state border or commute between metro and rural areas, check both ends of the route rather than relying on the state winner.

Why do other 2026 studies name different winners?

“Best” changes with the measurement system. A July 2026 comparison of current studies reports that RootMetrics tied AT&T and Verizon for first in its first-half-2026 report, while Opensignal and Ookla awarded top overall honors to T-Mobile. Those conclusions can coexist because the firms use different test sources, sampling, scoring, geography, and definitions of reliability or overall performance.

J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Wireless Network Quality Performance Study surveyed 20,050 customers and reported nine problems per 100 uses or fewer. It found regional variation: T-Mobile and Verizon tied in the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and West; Verizon led the North Central region; and T-Mobile led the Southeast and Southwest. Senior director Carl Lepper summarized the result this way: “Despite generational differences in the types of problems experienced, one thing is clear: wireless network quality is strong.”

Use these studies as different lenses rather than trying to create a single universal league table. PCMag is particularly useful when price and satisfaction are part of the decision; a reliability-focused study may favor a different carrier. A local test remains more relevant than any national trophy.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Is T-Mobile faster than AT&T or Verizon?

PCMag’s index gives T-Mobile the strongest overall speed result, but the published national scores do not provide one universal download or upload rate that applies to every phone and location. The practical speed winner depends on the radio bands available where you use the phone, congestion at the time, your plan’s priority, and whether your handset supports the carrier’s newest 5G channels.

For streaming and large downloads

Start with the carrier that performs best at your home, office, and regular travel stops. A higher national speed score is useful for shortlisting, but a weaker indoor signal can make a nominally faster network feel slower than a carrier with better building penetration.

For gaming and video calls

Look beyond peak download speed. Consistent latency, upload performance, and resistance to congestion matter when a game reacts to input or a video call must send your camera feed. Ask each carrier how your specific plan is prioritized during busy periods and whether hotspot traffic is subject to a separate limit.

For rural travel

Check the exact roads and destinations you use. State-level leadership does not prove continuous service on a highway, at a campsite, or inside a remote building, and the Alaska result is explicitly unranked in this dataset.

What is the best inexpensive carrier?

The cheapest plan is not automatically the best value if it is deprioritized, has a small high-speed data allowance, or offers little hotspot data. PCMag’s MVNO results provide a useful starting point, but you still need to read the plan’s conditions and confirm the host network in your area.

MVNO result National index result Price information in the study
Mint Mobile 7.70 nationally, the highest listed MVNO score Not stated in the index summary
Google Fi 7.56 nationally Not stated in the index summary
Visible Sixth overall Not stated in the index summary
Cricket Not stated as a national index score in the summary Best average price per line, at just over $30

These are carrier-level results, not a promise that every plan from the same company performs identically. MVNO plans can differ in priority, hotspot allowances, video-resolution policies, international roaming, multi-line discounts, and data caps. Compare the plan conditions line by line before treating a low monthly price as a better deal.

How to compare an MVNO with a major carrier

  1. Identify the underlying network and local result. An MVNO’s score reflects the network arrangement represented in the tests, but your address and travel route determine whether that arrangement works for you.
  2. Check priority language. Look for terms describing deprioritization or reduced speeds during congestion, and note whether the rule applies after a monthly data threshold.
  3. Measure hotspot value. A plan with inexpensive phone data may still be poor for laptop work if hotspot data is capped or slowed.
  4. Price the complete line. Include taxes, fees, activation charges, device payments, and the recurring price after any introductory period.
  5. Verify support and switching rules. Confirm number-porting requirements, eSIM availability, international use, and the process for replacing a lost SIM.

How should you choose a network for your own address?

Use a repeatable local decision process instead of accepting a national ranking as a guarantee.

  • Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.
  1. List the places that matter. Record your home, workplace, school, frequent indoor venues, and the roads or rail routes you travel. Mark locations where calls, uploads, or hotspot use are critical.
  2. Check coverage for the exact address. Use each carrier’s current coverage tool and treat the result as an estimate. Indoor coverage can differ substantially from outdoor coverage, especially in concrete, metal, or energy-efficient buildings.
  3. Test with your own phone. The index records the test device because handset capability affects connectivity. Confirm that your model is unlocked and supports the carrier’s required LTE and 5G bands before changing service.
  4. Match the plan to your workload. Heavy hotspot users need more tethering data; frequent travelers need roaming that works in their destinations; light users may benefit more from a low recurring price than from peak speed.
  5. Ask about congestion and priority. Two customers standing beside the same tower can see different results when one plan receives lower priority after a threshold.
  6. Check reliability evidence. Compare local experiences with the national and regional studies. If a carrier wins in your state but has repeated outages at your workplace, the local evidence should decide.
  7. Calculate the first-year cost. Add the normal monthly price, taxes and fees, activation, device financing, and any required add-ons. Separate temporary promotions from the recurring cost.

What phone and 5G compatibility checks are required?

Before switching, verify both the device and the account. A network’s national result can be unavailable to you if the phone lacks a needed band or is locked to another provider.

  • Unlocked status: Confirm that the phone is carrier-unlocked and that its IMEI is accepted by the new provider.
  • Band support: Compare the exact model number, not just the phone family, with the carrier’s supported LTE and 5G bands.
  • eSIM or physical SIM: Check which activation method your phone supports and keep the old SIM active until the number transfer finishes.
  • VoLTE and emergency calling: Make sure the phone supports the carrier’s current voice and emergency-service requirements.
  • Software and modem updates: Install current firmware before comparing performance so an outdated modem profile does not distort the test.
  • Dual-SIM behavior: If you use two lines, verify which line handles data, 5G, Wi-Fi calling, and emergency calls.

Run a call, an upload, a download, and a hotspot session at the places that matter after activation. Record the time and signal conditions so you can distinguish a one-off congestion event from a repeatable coverage problem.

What are the most common mistakes when switching networks?

Assuming the national winner works indoors

Coverage maps and national scores cannot model every wall or floor. Test inside the rooms where you actually work and sleep, not only on the sidewalk outside.

Comparing a premium plan with a budget plan as if they were identical

Priority, hotspot data, video treatment, and roaming can change the experience even when two plans use the same radio network. Put those conditions beside the price before deciding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Porting the number before confirming the new line

Keep the old service active until the new SIM or eSIM can make calls, send texts, use data, and receive verification codes. Have your account number and transfer PIN ready, and do not cancel the old line manually while a port is pending.

Testing with a different phone than the one you will keep

A newer modem or a different band combination can make a test look better than your actual daily experience. Test with the handset you intend to use.

Treating one speed test as a verdict

Repeat tests at morning, evening, and your busiest locations. A single result can reflect temporary congestion, a server issue, or a weak indoor position rather than the carrier’s normal performance.

What does the 2026 ranking mean for different users?

If you want the strongest national starting point

Begin with T-Mobile because it leads the PCMag national index and 45 state comparisons. Confirm local coverage and plan priority before committing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you live in Arkansas or Oregon

AT&T is the state-level winner in PCMag’s analysis. Compare its local result with the exact address and route you use; the state result does not eliminate neighborhood-level differences.

If you live in Vermont or Mississippi

Verizon leads the state comparison. Check whether your phone supports the bands used in your area and whether the plan’s hotspot and priority rules fit your usage.

If you live in Detroit or the San Francisco Bay Area

Verizon wins the major-metro comparison in both locations. Indoor testing and commute coverage should still determine the final choice.

If monthly cost dominates your decision

Start with the MVNO scores and Cricket’s average per-line price of just over $30, then compare data priority, hotspot limits, taxes, fees, and the recurring price after promotions. A lower bill is useful only if the plan remains usable at the times and places you need it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How current is this ranking?

The PCMag results describe tests collected through June 30, 2026, not a live guarantee. Towers, spectrum, plan rules, prices, device support, and customer satisfaction can change after the test window. Recheck coverage and plan terms immediately before switching, especially if your decision depends on a new phone, a promotional rate, or a specific travel route.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an unlocked 5G phone on any of the ranked networks?

Not automatically. The phone must be accepted by the carrier and support the LTE and 5G bands used in your area, and some model variants omit bands sold in another region. Check the exact model number and IMEI before ordering a SIM or eSIM.

Why can a phone show 5G while data still feels slow?

The 5G label only identifies the radio connection; it does not guarantee a free cell site or a high-priority plan. Congestion, a weak indoor signal, limited backhaul, or a plan threshold can all reduce usable performance while the status bar continues to show 5G.

Should frequent travelers carry two network lines?

A dual-SIM setup can provide a fallback when one carrier has a coverage gap on a regular route, but it adds another monthly cost and requires careful settings for data and calls. Base the decision on repeated gaps in your own travel log rather than on national rankings alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should I recheck a carrier before renewing?

Recheck after a major move, a new phone purchase, or a plan change, and periodically if service quality is critical. A six-month test window is valuable evidence, but it cannot capture every tower upgrade, outage pattern, or pricing change that occurs afterward.

Do customer surveys measure the same thing as speed tests?

No. Speed tests capture performance under sampled conditions, while surveys record customers’ reported problems and experiences. That is why a carrier can lead one study and tie or trail another without either result being invalid.
