For most players, start with Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones. It is the earlier release and the more traditional role-playing game, built around character archetypes, dialogue choices, sanity, companions and turn-based combat. Choose Stygian: Outer Gods first if you would rather explore and survive in first person, using action, stealth and crafting—and your PC meets its substantially higher listed requirements.
That is a recommendation based on gameplay and release order, not a claim about story chronology. The official listings identify both as Stygian games, but do not establish whether Outer Gods is a sequel, prequel or standalone story.

What is the difference between the two Stygian games?
They share a Lovecraftian horror setting and the Stygian name, but they are different kinds of games. Reign of the Old Ones is a narrative horror CRPG: its focus is role-playing through character identity, dialogue, companions, sanity systems and turn-based tactical encounters. Outer Gods is a first-person survival-horror game with RPG elements, emphasizing exploration, action, stealth and crafting.
That distinction matters more than which game has the newer release date. If you want to build a character and make choices through conversations and tactical decisions, Reign is the more direct fit. If you want to inhabit a first-person horror environment and manage survival pressures, Outer Gods is closer to that experience.

Release order, developers and what it does—and does not—tell you
Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones launched on 26 September 2019. It was developed by Cultic Games and published by Fulqrum Publishing. Stygian: Outer Gods is listed for 26 October 2026, with Misterial Games as developer and Fulqrum Publishing as publisher.
That makes Reign the older release and the obvious starting point if you want to follow the franchise in launch order. It does not, by itself, prove a story sequence. The official store pages identify a shared Stygian franchise and expose a bundle containing both games, but they do not describe Outer Gods as a direct sequel, prequel or standalone side story. Treat release order as a practical recommendation, not confirmed canon.
The different developers are also useful context. Similar branding and publisher do not mean that the games use the same systems, camera perspective or pacing. Expect a change of genre when moving from Cultic Games’ CRPG to Misterial Games’ first-person survival-horror design.
Why play Reign of the Old Ones first?
Start with Reign of the Old Ones if “RPG” is the deciding word in your search. The official description presents it as a narrative-driven horror CRPG inspired by the Call of Cthulhu tabletop game and H.P. Lovecraft’s writing. It offers eight character archetypes, belief systems, unusual companions, sanity effects and choices that shape role-playing.
Its appeal is the way those systems connect. Your character’s identity and worldview can affect dialogue and available actions, while sanity mechanics influence how the character experiences the world. Companions and their outcomes add another layer of consequence. This is a more authored, character-led kind of horror than a first-person survival game: you engage with the setting through the person you have made and the decisions that person can take.
The eight archetypes give the campaign a clear role-playing frame from the start. A player who enjoys selecting a concept, reading how that concept changes conversations and considering the consequences of a belief system will find more of that structure here than in a game whose main interaction is moving through an environment in first person. The official description also makes avoidance part of the decision space: fighting can be a poor choice, so information, dialogue and restraint matter.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCompanions reinforce that emphasis. They are not merely additional weapons in a combat lineup; the listing specifically highlights unusual companions and companion outcomes. That signals a campaign in which relationships and decisions are part of the horror experience. If you prefer a party-oriented CRPG where the people around your protagonist matter, Reign is the safer first choice.
Combat is turn-based and tactical, but fighting is not always presented as the best solution. That can suit players who enjoy weighing risk and looking for alternatives rather than treating every threat as an encounter to win. It also means the pace and feel differ sharply from the immediate first-person action of Outer Gods. Turn-based play gives you time to consider a move, while the surrounding sanity and dialogue systems keep combat from being the only way to make progress.
There is a meaningful caveat: the combat may not be the game’s strongest element. In a 2019 review, Wireframe’s Cameron Kunzelman praised its atmosphere, saying it “perfectly captures the otherworldly tone of Lovecraftian fiction,” while criticizing combat as clunky and unbalanced. The review awarded it 63%. That is one critic’s assessment, not a guarantee that every player will respond the same way; it is useful context if tactical combat is your main reason for considering it.

In other words, choose Reign for the complete role-playing package—archetype, worldview, dialogue, sanity, companions and tactical choices—not because every fight is expected to be elegant. Players who value atmosphere and literary horror may forgive a rougher combat edge; players seeking highly polished action should weigh the criticism carefully.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When should you choose Outer Gods first?
Choose Outer Gods first if you want modern first-person survival horror more than a traditional CRPG. Its Steam listing categorizes it with survival-horror, first-person, action, stealth, crafting, mystery and RPG tags. The publisher’s description emphasizes survival pressure, sanity, decisions and confronting the Outer Gods.
Those details point to a different kind of role-playing. The listing confirms RPG elements, but the game’s primary format is first-person survival horror—not a party-based, dialogue-heavy CRPG like Reign. If turn-based encounters and extensive character-dialogue decisions sound like friction rather than appeal, Outer Gods is the better match.
Its first-person viewpoint changes what “being in the world” means. Exploration, mystery and stealth are not secondary labels; they are central descriptors on the store page. You should therefore expect your attention to be on navigating spaces, identifying threats, managing survival pressure and deciding when action is preferable to avoidance. Crafting adds another practical layer, while the RPG tag indicates progression elements without promising the eight-archetype and belief-system structure found in Reign.
Sanity appears in both games, but do not assume it functions identically. Reign ties sanity to character identity, dialogue and recovery systems in its CRPG framework. Outer Gods lists sanity alongside survival, decisions and the Outer Gods themselves. The shared word points to thematic continuity, not identical rules.

The trade-off is a much higher stated PC threshold. The official listing calls for a 64-bit Windows 10 system, 16 GB of RAM, an RTX 3050- or RX 6600-class graphics card or equivalent, DirectX 12 and 25 GB of storage at minimum. Its recommended specification rises to 32 GB of RAM and an RTX 3080- or RX 6800 XT-class graphics card. These are the published requirements, not a performance guarantee for every system; check the complete store listing for any additional processor or other requirements before buying.
Can your PC run Outer Gods?
Use the published minimum as a starting check, not a promise of smooth performance. The listed GPU class and 16 GB minimum RAM make Outer Gods a substantially more demanding PC choice than Reign of the Old Ones, whose listing specifies just 2 GB of minimum RAM and 5 GB of storage.
| Listed requirement | Reign of the Old Ones | Outer Gods |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum RAM | 2 GB | 16 GB |
| Minimum graphics | Not specified in the available listing details | RTX 3050 / RX 6600 class or equivalent |
| Minimum operating system | Not specified in the available listing details | Windows 10 64-bit |
| DirectX | Not specified in the available listing details | Version 12 |
| Storage | 5 GB | 25 GB |
| Recommended RAM and graphics | Not specified in the available listing details | 32 GB RAM; RTX 3080 / RX 6800 XT class |
The comparison is useful even though the available Reign details do not include all of its system requirements. Its listed minimum RAM and storage are far lower; the evidence does not support filling in missing CPU, operating-system or GPU figures. If your PC is below Outer Gods’ minimum GPU or RAM class, do not assume that lowering a setting will solve the gap—the published specification is the reliable pre-purchase check available here.
For a practical check, compare your machine against four items before buying Outer Gods: a 64-bit Windows 10 installation, at least 16 GB of memory, an RTX 3050/RX 6600-class graphics card or equivalent, and 25 GB of free storage. DirectX 12 support is also listed. If you are planning around the recommended target rather than the minimum, the official page raises memory to 32 GB and graphics to an RTX 3080/RX 6800 XT class.

Do not read the 2 GB RAM and 5 GB storage figures for Reign as a complete specification. They simply show why it is the safer recommendation for an older or modest PC based on the details listed. Missing CPU, operating-system and graphics figures should be checked on the current store page rather than guessed.
How the moment-to-moment experience differs
Reign asks you to think in terms of character decisions. You select an archetype, express a worldview, manage sanity and decide how to approach encounters. Dialogue and companion outcomes are central, and turn-based combat creates deliberate pauses between decisions. The horror comes through writing, atmosphere, choices and the vulnerability of a character whose mental state matters.
Outer Gods asks you to think in terms of immediate presence and survival. First-person exploration puts the environment directly in front of you. Action, stealth and crafting suggest a loop of searching, preparing and responding to danger, while the mystery and survival-horror tags frame the experience around discovery and pressure. Its RPG elements may support progression, but its identity is not the same as a traditional party CRPG.
This is why a simple “newer is better” comparison misses the point. A player who dislikes turn-based combat may be happier with Outer Gods even if Reign has deeper explicit character systems. A player who wants conversations, companions and a defined role may find first-person action too thin, regardless of its newer presentation.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is Outer Gods better than Reign of the Old Ones?
Neither is the better choice for everyone. Outer Gods is the more suitable pick for first-person action and survival-horror systems; Reign is the more suitable pick for dialogue-led role-playing, character builds and turn-based tactics. “Better” depends on which format you actually want to play.
Steam review figures also need context. In a 2026 snapshot, Reign of the Old Ones had 66% positive user reviews from 1,807 reviews. Outer Gods had 77% positive overall from 572 reviews, while its recent-review window showed 53% positive from 56 reviews. Those are time-sensitive snapshots: ratings and review totals change, and the smaller recent sample is not directly interchangeable with the overall total. They are signals of player reception, not a lasting ranking or a substitute for matching the game to your preferences.
The gap between Outer Gods’ overall and recent figures is worth noting without overinterpreting it. A 77% overall rating reflects 572 reviews at that snapshot; 53% from 56 recent reviews describes a much smaller and newer window. Neither number explains why players voted as they did, and neither predicts how a particular reader will respond to stealth, crafting, first-person exploration or survival pressure.
For Reign, the 63% Wireframe critic score offers a separate perspective from Steam’s user-review percentages. Keep the sources distinct: critic scores and user ratings use different evaluators and methods, so they should not be combined into a single verdict.

If you are undecided, compare the store listings side by side. Confirm the current price, any active promotion, the bundle contents, the operating-system requirements and the storage needed. For Outer Gods, pay particular attention to the 16 GB minimum memory, GPU class, DirectX 12 and 25 GB storage. For Reign, the listing details available here establish 2 GB minimum RAM and 5 GB storage but do not provide every hardware field.
A digital-store purchase is the clearest fit for this comparison. The listings support digital copies and the combined franchise bundle; they do not establish a need for a physical edition or a separate accessory. If you want more Lovecraftian role-playing after Reign, the game’s explicit inspiration from the Call of Cthulhu tabletop game makes that an optional related recommendation, not a required companion purchase.
Do you need to play Reign before Outer Gods?
No required story order is established by the official listings available for these games. They confirm the two releases and their shared publisher and franchise bundle, but do not say that Outer Gods directly continues, precedes or stands apart from Reign of the Old Ones in canon.
Release order is clear: Reign of the Old Ones came out on 26 September 2019, and Outer Gods followed on 26 October 2026. Playing Reign first is therefore a sensible way to start with the earlier game and the franchise’s CRPG foundation, but it should not be mistaken for a confirmed narrative requirement. If the newer game’s first-person format is what you want, the available evidence does not give a reason you must wait.
There is also no stated requirement that knowledge of one game’s characters, plot or mechanics carries into the other. The safest wording is that both belong to the Stygian franchise, while continuity remains unspecified on the official pages. You can choose based on genre without claiming that you will miss a confirmed canonical prologue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which one should you play first?
- Pick Reign of the Old Ones first for character archetypes, belief systems, dialogue choices, sanity mechanics, companions and turn-based tactical combat.
- Pick Outer Gods first for first-person exploration, action, stealth, crafting and survival-horror presentation.
- Lean toward Reign if your PC is modest: its listed minimum is 2 GB RAM and 5 GB storage, while Outer Gods lists 16 GB RAM, a newer GPU class and 25 GB storage.
- Lean toward Outer Gods if you already have suitable hardware and do not want turn-based combat.
- Choose by atmosphere if both formats appeal: Reign delivers literary, character-led horror, while Outer Gods foregrounds first-person survival, mystery and physical exploration.
- Choose by budget timing rather than an assumed permanent price: check each Steam listing and the franchise bundle for current promotions before checkout.
The simplest recommendation is to play Reign of the Old Ones first for the more traditional RPG experience, then move to Outer Gods if you want a different, first-person style of horror. Pick Outer Gods first when its format—not an assumed story order—is the reason you are interested.

Does Outer Gods have character creation like Reign of the Old Ones?
The available listing describes Outer Gods as a first-person survival-horror game with RPG elements, but it does not establish whether it has character creation or a comparable archetype system. Do not assume the RPG label means the two games share the same character-building structure.
Is Outer Gods a direct sequel to Reign of the Old Ones?
The official listings do not identify Outer Gods as a direct sequel or prequel, and they do not explain the games’ story continuity. The shared franchise identity alone is not enough to establish a canonical connection.

Which game is more like a traditional RPG?
Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones is the traditional RPG choice. Its official description highlights eight character archetypes, belief systems, dialogue-driven role-playing, unusual companions, sanity effects and turn-based tactical combat. Outer Gods has RPG elements, but its primary format is first-person survival horror.
Can a low-spec PC run Outer Gods?
Check the official minimum before buying. The listing calls for Windows 10 64-bit, 16 GB RAM, an RTX 3050/RX 6600-class GPU or equivalent, DirectX 12 and 25 GB of storage. Those requirements are substantially higher than the listed 2 GB RAM and 5 GB storage minimums for Reign.
Recommended Free Tools
Is Reign of the Old Ones turn-based?
Yes. It is described as a narrative horror CRPG with turn-based tactical combat. The game also emphasizes choices, dialogue, sanity and companions, and its design allows avoiding some fights rather than treating combat as the only solution.
Is Outer Gods an action game or an RPG?
It is primarily a first-person survival-horror game with RPG elements. Steam tags it with action, stealth, crafting, mystery and RPG, so it should not be treated as a party-based CRPG equivalent to Reign.
Which Stygian game has the lower PC requirements?
Based on the listed figures, Reign of the Old Ones has the lower threshold: 2 GB minimum RAM and 5 GB storage are specified. Outer Gods lists 16 GB RAM, an RTX 3050/RX 6600-class minimum GPU, DirectX 12, Windows 10 64-bit and 25 GB storage.
How reliable are the Steam review percentages?
They are useful snapshots, not permanent rankings. The cited 2026 figures were 66% positive from 1,807 reviews for Reign, 77% positive from 572 overall reviews for Outer Gods, and 53% positive from 56 recent Outer Gods reviews. Counts and percentages can change, and the recent sample is much smaller.

The Bottom Line
Start with Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones for the franchise’s traditional RPG foundation: archetypes, dialogue, sanity, companions and turn-based tactics. Start with Stygian: Outer Gods only when first-person exploration, stealth, crafting and survival horror are your priority—and your PC meets its much higher requirements.
