Which spending, hashrate and shutdown limits should you set for autonomous mining software?

Use several independent limits, not one master setting: a small per-transaction or per-epoch allowance, a hard budget for each unattended run, and a separate rolling daily or lifetime ceiling. Cap hashrate at the highest rate your exact rig, power supply, firmware, algorithm and cooling system have sustained under supervision, leaving thermal and electrical headroom. Stop normally when the budget, epoch limit or finite test duration is reached. Stop immediately for critical temperature or power, sustained low hashrate, chain or hardware-integrity failures, abnormal startup, or an unknown transaction result.

There is no safe universal number for any of these settings. The correct values depend on your coin, burn cost, rig and operating envelope. The design below gives you a way to derive and enforce them without allowing a loop, retry storm or hardware fault to drain funds or damage equipment.

Why is one spending cap not enough?

A single cap leaves predictable gaps. A per-run budget limits one session, but a process that restarts can consume that amount repeatedly. A lifetime limit prevents that cumulative failure, while a per-event limit stops one transaction or epoch from consuming the entire session allowance.

Use four layers where the software and your policy system permit them:

Layer What it limits Why it exists Where to enforce it
Per transaction or burn One payment, burn or work submission Bounds the loss from a single loop iteration or duplicate Miner configuration or wallet policy
Per epoch All events in one mining epoch Prevents an epoch from consuming the full run allowance Epoch controller, if supported
Per run One unattended invocation Defines the maximum approved loss for that session Miner command or job runner
Rolling daily or lifetime Cumulative spending across restarts and runs Stops repeated launches from bypassing the run budget Wallet, policy service or external watchdog

Keep the limits independent. A run should stop when either its own budget or its maximum epoch condition is reached, after the software has dealt with burns already in flight. The outer daily or lifetime control should still reject a new run even if the local process has reset its counters.

If you have an external policy layer, model it explicitly. The orbserv controls documented for this purpose use a dailyLimit, a maxPerTx, and a paused switch. A pause switch is valuable because it lets an operator freeze new work without deleting or editing the other limits.

How should I set a per-run and lifetime budget?

Start with the amount you are willing to lose if an unattended session fails completely, then divide that risk across events and epochs. Treat the per-run value as an approved maximum loss, not as a target to spend.

Use Sova’s two independent caps correctly

Sova documents --budget-zat as the cap for one mine run and --lifetime-budget-zat as an optional cap across runs. They apply independently. A run stops after its budget or maximum-epoch condition, while handling burns that are already in flight.

  1. Choose the per-run budget in the smallest denomination the software accepts. Call this your session-loss ceiling.
  2. Set a lower per-transaction or per-epoch allowance so one iteration cannot consume the whole session ceiling.
  3. Set the lifetime cap below the amount that would create an unacceptable cumulative loss if the job were restarted repeatedly.
  4. If an external policy service is available, add a rolling daily limit and connect its pause control to your incident procedure.
  5. Record which wallet, key, machine and configuration produced each run so a restart cannot silently use a fresh local counter.

Sova warns that “The caps are only as good as state.json.” Protect that state file from accidental deletion, corruption and concurrent writers. Back it up using a method that preserves the counter and make the process fail closed when the file cannot be read or verified. The same documentation warns about running two miners on one key; isolate keys or use an external ledger so two processes cannot each believe they have the remaining balance.

Choose denominations and reserves deliberately

Keep an operating reserve separate from the amount that the miner is allowed to burn. APOW guidance recommends a finite test duration and a reserve because the apparent protocol limit may not cover every source of loss. Do not count a reserve as spendable headroom when calculating the run budget; it exists for reconciliation, fees or recovery.

Do not translate a token-denominated cap into a permanent dollar guarantee. Mint value, gas, swaps, exchange-rate movement and hosting costs can change independently. A budget expressed in the protocol’s native unit is still useful, but it must be paired with an exchange-rate policy and an operator pause.

How do I choose a safe hashrate cap?

Set the ceiling from supervised measurements on the exact hardware, algorithm, firmware, power supply and cooling arrangement. Use the highest rate that remains stable while temperature, power draw, rejected work and pool or chain behavior stay inside your tested envelope, then leave headroom below that point.

Measure the real operating envelope

  1. Run the intended algorithm on the production rig under the same firmware, voltage, clocks, fans and ambient conditions you expect in unattended use.
  2. Record sustained hashrate rather than a short startup peak, along with board and chip temperatures, total power, rejected or stale work and restart behavior.
  3. Repeat the observation long enough to expose thermal rise and pool or chain interruptions. A number that is stable for a few minutes is not a validated unattended ceiling.
  4. Choose a cap below the sustained result to preserve margin for warmer rooms, dust, fan wear and power-supply variation.
  5. Store the tested configuration with the cap. Changing the algorithm, firmware, clocks, power limit or cooling invalidates the measurement.

The reviewed material publishes no universal hashrate number. A value that is safe for one board or algorithm can overheat another, and a pool or chain can reject work even when the local dashboard looks healthy.

Purchased capacity needs two limits

NiceHash describes orders using an amount to spend, a price per hash and an optional approximate maximum hashrate. That pattern is useful for any purchased capacity: cap both money and speed. A money-only order can buy more capacity than your downstream system can cool or validate; a hashrate-only order can continue spending when prices change.

Use hardware controls as independent guards

HashCore’s documented controls cover temperature, hashrate and power thresholds, with restart on low hashrate and chain-integrity checks. Configure these as guards around the miner rather than relying on a single software dashboard. Its documentation also cautions that changes in this section are made at the operator’s own risk, so test each threshold before enabling unattended operation.

Which conditions should cause a normal shutdown?

Normal stops are expected, auditable exits rather than faults. Configure all three of the following:

  • Budget exhausted: stop submitting new work when the per-run allowance is consumed, after the client handles in-flight burns.
  • Maximum epochs reached: stop at the configured epoch count even if some budget remains.
  • Finite test duration elapsed: end a trial at its time limit instead of allowing a test process to become a permanent worker.

Make the stop state explicit in logs and in the external policy layer. The job runner should distinguish “completed by limit” from “crashed,” because an automatic restart is reasonable for the former only when the daily or lifetime policy still permits another run.

When should autonomous mining shut down immediately?

Emergency stops protect money, equipment and chain integrity. They should be latched until an operator reviews the cause, not treated as ordinary restart conditions.

Thermal and electrical triggers

  • Critical board, chip or coolant temperature, including a sensor that becomes unavailable or reports an impossible value.
  • Power above the tested supply, circuit or connector envelope, or a sudden rise that persists beyond the measurement noise.
  • Fan, pump or other cooling failure.

Use thresholds tested on the actual rig and leave enough margin for sensor lag. If a sensor is missing, fail safe rather than assuming the last reading is valid.

Performance and integrity triggers

  • Sustained hashrate below the minimum that makes the run economical or indicates a failed board.
  • Repeated restarts, excessive rejected or stale work, or a pool connection that cannot be validated.
  • Broken chain, board-integrity or firmware checks.
  • Abnormal startup or runtime state, including a configuration that differs from the approved one.

A low-hashrate restart can recover a transient fault, but put a limit on restart attempts. Escalate to a latched shutdown when the condition persists instead of allowing an endless cycle that continues to spend.

What should the software do when a transaction result is unknown?

Pause and reconcile; never retry without a bound. An unknown result means the client cannot establish whether the payment, burn or submission succeeded. Repeating the operation can create a duplicate charge even when the first attempt eventually confirms.

  1. Stop new spending and mark the operation as unresolved.
  2. Query the authoritative node, wallet or payment service using the transaction identifier and the correct chain or network.
  3. Wait for a definitive success, failure or expiration state according to that service’s documented rules.
  4. Only then release the pause, and only if the remaining per-run, daily and lifetime limits still allow work.
  5. Escalate cases that cannot be reconciled instead of increasing retries or raising the budget.

APOW’s warning is direct: “Do not promise a hard dollar stop from an untested watcher.” The watcher must be tested against delayed responses, dropped connections, duplicate callbacks and process restarts before it is trusted as a loss-control layer.

How should limits be enforced outside the miner process?

Assume the miner can crash, be duplicated or lose local state. Put at least one control outside the process that spends the funds.

  • Use a wallet or policy service to enforce the rolling daily or lifetime amount.
  • Give each independent worker its own key or ledger identity; do not let two miners share a key and race on one local counter.
  • Have the watchdog own the pause switch and require an operator action to clear an emergency latch.
  • Persist event IDs, transaction IDs, budget debits and reconciliation outcomes so a restart can determine what already happened.
  • Reject configuration changes that are not signed, reviewed or recorded with the machine and software version.

External enforcement cannot repair an incorrect local measurement, so pair it with hardware telemetry and chain validation. Conversely, hardware alarms do not limit wallet spending; both layers are necessary.

What does the burn-rate example show?

A Sova project-keeper report dated 2026-09-27 recorded 1,441 burns in 5.6 hours, described as about 1.85 TAZ per day. The report also said 17% were doubles that sealed nothing. This is an example, not a current universal rate or a promise about another deployment.

It demonstrates why interval, duplicate-work and budget controls belong together. If a process can submit duplicates, a per-event ceiling limits each mistake, a run cap limits one session, and a rolling or lifetime cap limits the cumulative effect. The duplicate rate also justifies treating unknown transaction status as a pause-and-reconcile state rather than an invitation to retry.

How can I compare candidate configurations?

Score each proposed configuration against the same operational questions. The labels below describe control strength, not preset numeric values.

Configuration Per-event exposure Cumulative exposure Hashrate and headroom Stop coverage Unknown transaction behavior External enforcement
Minimal One run can be consumed by one event Only a local run cap Unvalidated or near peak Budget stop only Retries may continue None
Controlled Separate transaction or epoch cap Run plus lifetime or rolling limit Supervised ceiling with margin Budget, epoch and finite-duration stops; thermal and power alarms Pause and reconcile Wallet or policy layer
Defence in depth Small event cap and duplicate protection Independent run, daily and lifetime ceilings Validated cap plus hardware thresholds All normal and emergency triggers, with a latched fault state Pause, authoritative lookup and operator release Separate keys, durable ledger and watchdog

The controlled configuration is a reasonable minimum for unattended work. Use the defence-in-depth design when a failed run could threaten production funds, expensive hardware or a shared electrical circuit.

What should I verify before enabling unattended mining?

  1. Confirm the per-transaction or per-epoch amount is lower than the per-run budget.
  2. Confirm the per-run budget cannot bypass the rolling daily or lifetime ceiling.
  3. Test that budget exhaustion, maximum epochs and finite duration produce a clean normal stop.
  4. Test critical temperature, excessive power, low hashrate, chain-integrity failure and sensor loss with safe limits or simulated signals.
  5. Disconnect or delay the payment response and verify that the client pauses without issuing an unbounded retry.
  6. Restart with an in-flight event and verify that durable state prevents a duplicate debit.
  7. Run only one worker per key unless an external ledger provides atomic accounting.
  8. Document the approved rig, firmware, algorithm, cooling, power envelope and cap so later changes trigger a new supervised validation.
  9. Verify that an emergency latch requires reconciliation and an explicit operator release.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to an autonomous miner after a power outage?

Treat recovery as a new reconciliation event, not an automatic continuation. On restart, load the durable budget and event ledger, check for in-flight transactions with the authoritative service, and keep the worker paused until the result is known.

Should I use one wallet key for several mining rigs?

Separate keys or separately accounted identities make per-rig exposure visible and prevent local counters from racing. If a shared treasury is unavoidable, enforce atomic debits in an external policy service rather than trusting each miner’s local state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much reserve should an x402-style deployment keep?

No fixed amount is established by the cited guidance. Keep a separately controlled reserve for fees, reconciliation and exchange-rate movement, and do not let the miner treat that reserve as available operating budget.

How do I prove that a shutdown watcher is reliable?

Exercise it with delayed and duplicated responses, lost network connections, sensor failures, process restarts and altered configuration. A watcher should fail closed and produce an auditable pause before it is treated as a hard loss limit.
