For most first-time players, start with Resident Evil HD Remaster, the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake, the 2020 Resident Evil 3 remake, and the 2023 Resident Evil 4 remake. Choose the originals when you want their historical design, documented bonus modes, or a direct comparison with what was reimagined. The important exceptions are Resident Evil 3, where the 1999 game’s Mercenaries Mode is a meaningful reason to return, and Resident Evil 4, where the 2005 edition remains a worthwhile second play and includes Separate Ways on PC. This guide separates camera and movement, campaign structure, bonus content, edition details, and modern-PC access so you can choose without relying on vague “better” claims.

Should you play the original or remake first?
Pick the remake first when you want modern camera conventions, revised controls, or a substantially reimagined presentation. Pick the original first when the period-specific interface, fixed-camera rhythm, scenario structure, or documented bonus modes are the reason you are interested. There is no single winner across all four pairs because Capcom did not treat every remake as the same kind of upgrade.

A practical order for a new player is HD Remaster, Resident Evil 2 remake, Resident Evil 3 remake, then Resident Evil 4 remake. After that, return to the corresponding originals in whichever pair interested you most. If you already prefer fixed cameras and deliberate inventory puzzles, reverse the first two choices and begin with the classic releases.
Use five questions for every pair:
- Do you want a fixed camera and period movement, or a modern third-person camera?
- Are exploration, backtracking and resource management more important to you than speed?
- Do you want a faithful historical reference point or a reimagined story and level flow?
- Which bonus modes are actually documented for the edition you are buying?
- Are you choosing a first play, a replay, or a historical comparison?
What is the difference between the 1996 Resident Evil and Resident Evil HD Remaster?
Resident Evil HD Remaster is the modernized edition of Capcom’s 2002 remake, not an HD pass applied directly to the unchanged 1996 game. It keeps the mansion-focused survival-horror structure while presenting rebuilt visual assets and two movement schemes. The 1996 release is a separate work with its own presentation and design history.

Why HD Remaster is the default first choice
The remaster preserves the locked-room exploration, key-item puzzles and resource pressure associated with the mansion scenario, but it gives you a choice between original-style controls and an alternate analog movement option. That makes the common “must I accept old controls?” objection less decisive than it is with the 1996 edition. If you want the shape of classic Resident Evil without committing to its earliest presentation, choose HD Remaster.
Why the 1996 original still matters
The first release is the reference point for the original performances, interface, visual direction and pacing. It is useful when you want to understand what the 2002 remake changed rather than simply experience the mansion story. GOG’s maintained PC listing states support for Windows 10 and Windows 11 and modern controllers, but that support does not turn the 1996 game into the HD Remaster’s alternate-movement design. The two versions should be treated as separate choices.

Is the Resident Evil 2 original still worth playing?
Yes, especially if you want the classic scenario structure and its documented bonus modes. For a first play by someone accustomed to modern third-person games, the 2019 remake is the easier entry because Capcom documents an over-the-shoulder camera, modern controls and separate Leon and Claire campaigns.
Choose the 2019 remake for modern presentation
The remake rebuilds the police-station story around an over-the-shoulder viewpoint rather than the original’s fixed-camera presentation. Leon and Claire remain distinct playable routes, so the game supports two protagonist perspectives without requiring you to understand every difference between the old and new scenario systems before starting. This is the safest recommendation for a newcomer who wants the tension and puzzle structure in a contemporary format.

Choose the 1998 game for its historical structure and extras
The original remains more than a museum piece. GOG’s listing identifies separate adventures and classic bonus content including Extreme Battle, 4th Survivor and Tofu. Those modes are a concrete reason to own or revisit the original, even if you have already completed the remake. Do not assume that the two editions reproduce every scenario interaction identically; the documented evidence supports separate protagonists and bonus content, not a claim that all route logic is shared one-for-one.

Both releases are separately obtainable. GOG lists a maintained Windows version of the 1998 game, while Capcom’s store lists the original and remake as distinct products. Check the specific edition description for the platform and included extras rather than assuming a bundle contains both.

What does the original Resident Evil 3 have that the remake does not?
The clearest documented difference is the extra mode: the current GOG edition of the 1999 game includes Mercenaries Mode, while Capcom describes the 2020 remake’s included companion as Resident Evil Resistance, a separate one-versus-four online game. They are different types of content, so one is not a substitute for the other.

The remake is the modern-presentation route. Its updated controls and visual approach make it the straightforward choice for players who want a contemporary action-horror campaign and do not specifically seek the original’s systems. It is also the version to consider if Resistance is the documented extra that interests you.
Why choose the 1999 original
The original provides the period design and Mercenaries Mode in one package. That makes it a strong second play even for someone who starts with the remake. GOG lists the game for current Windows versions, so you do not need to locate an old console to explore that edition.
Claims about a definitive list of streets, buildings, bosses or branching decisions missing from the remake should be treated cautiously. The verified edition information establishes the different bonus modes, but it does not establish a complete content audit of every sequence. Buy or play the original for its own campaign and Mercenaries Mode, not on the assumption that an unverified checklist of omissions is settled fact.
The relevant listings are GOG’s Resident Evil 3 page and Capcom’s Resident Evil information.

Is Resident Evil 4 remake better than the 2005 original?
The 2023 remake is the better first choice for most modern players because it updates the presentation and reimagines the story rather than merely increasing resolution. The 2005 game remains worthwhile as a distinct second experience, especially because its current PC edition includes Separate Ways and other previously released bonus content.
What the 2023 remake changes
Capcom presents the remake as a modernized, narratively reimagined version. That means you should expect altered pacing, encounters and story emphasis, not a scene-for-scene restoration of the 2005 release. Its base game can be played without owning or completing the original. PlayStation’s official FAQ says Resident Evil 4 can be enjoyed without prior knowledge of the series.
Separate Ways is not automatically part of the remake’s standard base edition. Capcom lists it as separate downloadable content that requires the base game. The Gold Edition includes the base game, Separate Ways and the Extra DLC Pack, so verify the edition name before paying for the campaign twice or assuming it is included.
The remake also has Mercenaries as a free add-on, and PlayStation lists a PS5 VR Mode as an optional free add-on. A PS VR2 headset is required only for VR play; ordinary RE4 gameplay does not require a headset.
What the 2005 edition still offers
The original’s action-horror balance, interface and encounter design are different enough to justify a separate play rather than a compulsory prerequisite. Capcom’s Steam listing states that the 2005 PC edition includes previously released bonus content such as Separate Ways. This makes the edition particularly convenient for anyone who wants the original campaign and Ada’s additional story in one purchase, subject to the current listing and region.
Use the official Steam page for the 2005 PC edition, PlayStation’s remake FAQ and the current Capcom edition information when checking DLC and platform availability.
Can you play the original Resident Evil games on a modern PC?
Yes for the first three games through maintained Windows editions on GOG. GOG’s listings for the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 describe Windows 10/11 compatibility and modern-controller support. That is compatibility for the listed PC builds, not a guarantee that every storefront or old physical copy behaves the same way.

What to check before buying
- Confirm whether the listing is the original game, HD Remaster or a numbered remake; the names are not interchangeable.
- Read the current platform and operating-system notes for your region.
- Check the included modes and DLC. RE2’s classic bonus modes, RE3’s Mercenaries Mode and RE4’s Separate Ways are edition-specific details worth verifying.
- Review controller support if you do not want keyboard controls. GOG’s original-game listings identify modern controllers, but they do not promise the HD Remaster’s alternate movement scheme.
- Check the date and region of any price or bundle before buying. Digital availability and promotions are volatile.
A Sony DualSense wireless controller is an optional Windows accessory if you prefer a gamepad; it is not required, and the documented support should not be read as a promise of Resident Evil-specific haptics. Sony explains Windows connectivity on its DualSense support page.
What is included in Capcom’s Remake Trilogy bundle?
The announced Remake Trilogy is not a package containing every remake from Resident Evil 1 through 4. Capcom identifies its contents as Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3 and Resistance, and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition and Mercenaries. Resident Evil HD Remaster is not listed.
That naming matters if you are expecting the first game’s remaster. Capcom also notes that the bundle’s items can be purchased individually, so compare what you already own with the bundle contents before paying for a duplicate. The bundle’s included RE4 Gold Edition does cover the remake’s Separate Ways DLC, while the first-game HD Remaster remains a separate purchase.
See Capcom’s Remake Trilogy announcement for the stated contents.

If you want the original design history
Play the 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2005 releases in order, then sample the remakes as reinterpretations. This makes changes in camera, pacing, scenario design and bonus content easier to recognize without treating either version as a replacement for the other.

If you want the most useful second play
Return to RE3’s 1999 original for Mercenaries Mode, RE2’s 1998 original for Extreme Battle, 4th Survivor and Tofu, and RE4’s 2005 edition for its different campaign design and included Separate Ways. For RE1, the original is primarily the historical comparison; HD Remaster is the more flexible repeat play because of its movement choices.
If you want the fewest edition surprises
Check the product page immediately before purchase. The most consequential traps are confusing HD Remaster with a 1996 HD conversion, assuming the Remake Trilogy contains HD Remaster, and assuming Separate Ways is included with every RE4 remake edition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow we picked the recommendations
The recommendations use documented camera and movement options, the distinction between original and reimagined presentation, named bonus modes, edition contents, current Windows access and the difference between a first play and a historical comparison. They do not rely on a universal quality score, sales figures, completion-time claims or a hands-on performance test. Platform listings, bundle contents and DLC availability were checked in October 2026 and can change later.
What should you buy first?
For a modern-first route, choose HD Remaster, the RE2 remake, the RE3 remake and the RE4 remake. Add the originals selectively: RE1 for the earliest presentation, RE2 for its classic bonus modes, RE3 for Mercenaries Mode and RE4 for a distinct 2005 campaign with Separate Ways included in the current PC edition. That approach gives you the strongest entry point for each game without pretending that any remake erases the reasons to play its predecessor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to play earlier Resident Evil games before Resident Evil 4 remake?
No. PlayStation’s official FAQ says Resident Evil 4 can be enjoyed without prior knowledge of the series. Earlier games add context for returning characters, but they are not a prerequisite for following the remake’s campaign.
Does Resident Evil HD Remaster contain the 1996 game unchanged?
No. HD Remaster is derived from Capcom’s 2002 remake and is sold separately from the 1996 release. Choose the original if you specifically want its earliest presentation and design.
Can I use a modern controller with the original PC games?
GOG lists modern-controller support for its maintained Windows editions of the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. That support does not mean those games gain HD Remaster’s alternate movement system.
Is Separate Ways included with every Resident Evil 4 remake purchase?
No. Capcom lists Separate Ways as separate DLC for the remake’s base edition, while Gold Edition includes it. The 2005 PC edition’s current Steam listing includes Separate Ways as previously released bonus content.
Does the optional Resident Evil 4 VR mode require a headset for normal play?
No. The PS5 VR Mode is an optional add-on, and a PS VR2 headset is needed only if you choose to play in VR. The standard remake campaign remains playable without VR hardware.
