Capture the count immediately, with its exact URL, item identity, metric label, surrounding context and UTC time. Save an unedited screenshot (and, when practical, a PDF or saved page), keep a separate capture log, request an Internet Archive snapshot for a suitable public page, and preserve any authorized analytics export as a differently scoped record. Hash the originals and keep protected copies. This documents what was displayed at a particular time; it does not prove that the platform’s number was truthful or guarantee legal admissibility.
The workflow below applies to public posts, videos and pages, as well as account-owner dashboards. It also explains why a public counter, a creator report and an API response can legitimately disagree.

Preserve two things together: the rendered evidence and the provenance record that explains exactly what it shows. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s preservation guidance emphasizes recording the URL and date-and-time information, while National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) guidance adds source documentation, hashing, custody records and backups (SEC guidance; NIST Digital Evidence Preservation).
- Identity: platform, account or channel, post/video/page title, and item ID if one exists.
- Location: the complete URL, copied exactly.
- Metric: the literal label on screen (for example, “views,” “engaged views,” or “unique viewers”).
- Context: enough of the page to associate the number with the correct item, including visible date, reporting range, filters and any interaction used to reveal it.
- Time: capture time in UTC, plus local time zone when it helps explain the event.
- Acquisition: observer, browser or device, logged-in state, and method used.
- Integrity: original filenames, hash algorithm and digest, storage locations and every later transfer or edit.
Record abbreviations exactly as displayed. If a page says “1.2M,” log “1.2M” rather than converting it to an invented precise value. If the number changes later, make a new observation with its own timestamp and hash; never overwrite the first file.

How do I capture a changing count right now?
Work from the narrowest page that visibly ties the number to the item. Do not refresh while deciding what to save: a refresh can replace the state you meant to document.
- Identify the target. Copy the full URL, platform, account or channel, item title or ID and the on-screen metric label. Note any date range, sorting choice, tab, expansion or click needed to expose the count.
- Capture the rendered view. Take an unedited screenshot showing the item and count together. If the browser address is not visible in the image, put the URL in your contemporaneous log. Where practical, also save a PDF or page representation with surrounding context.
- Write the log immediately. Add UTC time, local time zone, observer, browser/device, login status, filters and interactions, and any loading error. Save the displayed count verbatim.
- Preserve originals. Store the first screenshot, PDF and saved-page files unchanged. Make separate copies for annotations, redactions or highlights; never edit the original.
- Hash the files. Generate a secure hash (such as SHA-256), place the digest list in a separate file, and record when it was generated.
- Make protected copies. Keep at least two copies in separate protected locations. Log transfers, exports and edits so another person can reconstruct custody.
A saved HTML page or PDF is a representation of what was rendered, not the video itself or proof that dynamic behavior, audio or streaming content was preserved. The SEC’s example web-page procedure specifically excludes audio and video (SEC).

How can I create a Wayback Machine record?
For a public URL, submit it to Internet Archive’s Save Page Now, retain the resulting archived URL and archive time, then reopen the snapshot. Treat it as corroboration only if the archived result visibly contains the same count and item context.
- Open web.archive.org and choose Save Page Now.
- Paste the exact public page URL and submit it while the count is still visible.
- Save the archive URL and the time shown by the archive in your log.
- Open the archived page in a new session. Check that the item, metric label and count are actually present and readable.
- If the counter is missing, different or replaced by an error, record that limitation. Do not describe the archive as confirmation.
Internet Archive states, “Please note, this method only saves a single page, not the whole site” (Internet Archive Help Center). The Library of Congress identifies scripted content, user interaction, streaming, password gates and paywalls as common web-archiving problems (Library of Congress web-archiving guidance). Do not submit private account pages or sensitive personal information to a public archive.
Which record should support the claim?
No single record answers every question. Use the combination that matches access, timing and the metric’s definition.

Compare records by asking: is access public or account-owner only; is the value a visible rendered number or a platform field; is it a moment-of-capture or a reporting period; is the copy independently hosted or collector-controlled; did dynamic content load; and are integrity and custody documented?

How do YouTube public counts, exports and APIs differ?
Label every YouTube record with its source and definition. A public statistic, a Studio report and an API response are not automatically interchangeable.
Public statistic
YouTube Help says that, beginning August 24, 2026, a view is counted when a video starts playing across Shorts, long-form videos and live streams. The same guidance distinguishes views from engaged views, unique viewers and other measures (YouTube Help). Preserve the exact label and applicable date; do not silently equate a public-view number with unique people, monetization-eligible views or a historical count collected under an older definition.
Creator export
If you control the channel, YouTube Studio Advanced Mode can export data. Save the selected video, metric, date range and export time with the file. An owner report is not evidence that an unrelated viewer could access the same data (YouTube Help).
Data API response
For an authorized or otherwise permitted workflow, the YouTube Data API videos.list method can return statistics.viewCount for a specified video ID. Preserve the response, request parameters, video ID and retrieval time rather than copying only the number (YouTube Data API).
Analytics API report
YouTube says Analytics API processing typically introduces a latency of 48 to 72 hours (YouTube Analytics API data model). A report’s requested end date therefore is not necessarily a snapshot of the present moment. Deleted videos can disappear from per-video breakdowns while their views remain in aggregates, and some dimensional breakdowns may be limited.
Retention terms for recurring archives
A developer building a recurring API archive must check current YouTube terms. The standard policy limits storage of non-authorized API statistics beyond 30 days; a separate policy describes a conditional amendment for accepted use cases that may permit longer storage of some metrics (YouTube Developer Policies). These client conditions are separate from locally preserved screenshots made for an ordinary evidence record.
How do I hash and safeguard the originals?
Hashing gives you a repeatable way to detect later byte changes. It does not establish that the page was truthful before capture. NIST notes, “Digital files are very easy to change, so maintaining the integrity of the data is a critical concern” (NIST).

- Close or finish the capture, then hash each original file before annotating or converting it.
- Store the filename, algorithm, digest and hash time in a separate manifest.
- Copy the originals and manifest to a second protected location, preferably with access controls and version history.
- Log every transfer, rename, export, redaction and derivative file. Re-hash derivatives and mark them as derivatives.
- Periodically verify that stored originals still produce the recorded digest.
For an additional offline copy, an M-DISC archival Blu-ray may be used with a compatible M-DISC writer. Check writer and disc compatibility, plan future migration and do not treat the medium as a guarantee of lifespan, retrieval or authentication.
What should I say the evidence proves?
Use narrow, observable wording: “The record shows that the page displayed 1.2M views for item X at 2026-10-30T14:22:11Z.” State the metric label, source URL, capture method and any omissions. Do not claim the underlying views were genuine, that a hash proves the number’s truth, that an archive retained all page behavior, or that the package automatically satisfies a court, regulator or other receiving institution.
If a dispute is likely, ask the receiving institution which authentication, format, chain-of-custody and preservation requirements it applies. No general procedure guarantees admissibility.
What commonly goes wrong, and how do I fix it?
The number is abbreviated or rounded
Keep the literal display (“1.2M,” “3.4K”) and say it is rounded or abbreviated. Do not manufacture an exact count by multiplying.

Keep the URL in the capture log and save a PDF or page representation that includes address or page identity when practical. Do not crop away the item title or account context.
The count appears only after a click or scroll
Record the interaction sequence, filter state and time. Capture the final rendered state and, when useful, a second screenshot showing the control that opened it.
Wayback shows no counter
Record the archive URL and failure or omission. A scripted, personalized, streaming, password-protected or paywalled counter may not be replayable; retain the local capture as the contemporaneous observation instead.

The public count and Analytics report disagree
Compare metric labels, video ID, reporting range, time zones and processing lag. A current public statistic and a processed report can describe different scopes or moments.
An API request is rejected
Check authorization, video ID, requested parts and current terms. Save the request context and error response; do not substitute an unverified number from a different endpoint.
A page is blank or times out
Record the failure, browser/device, network conditions and time. Retry only as a new acquisition, not by replacing the failed original. If the page requires login, do not publish credentials or send private content to a public archive.
The file was edited after capture
Keep the original untouched, hash it again only for verification, and create a clearly named derivative for annotation or redaction. Preserve both manifests.

Use caching carefully: a cache hit is not a new observation. Store the request URL, options, response headers and capture time, and disable or expire the cache when you need a fresh count.

How should I archive a changing count on a schedule?
Use a new evidence ID for every observation. Schedule the capture, write the exact UTC time when the request completed, retain the rendered file and response metadata, hash each original, and compare records by item ID, metric label, URL, scope and time. Never overwrite the first observation or infer the exact moment or cause of a later change.
For each run, decide whether you need a fresh page or a platform report. A cache-enabled screenshot can repeat an old state; an Analytics API report can lag 48–72 hours; an owner export can cover a date range rather than the instant of capture. Keep those scopes separate in filenames and manifests.
What is the complete evidence checklist?
- Exact URL copied without shortening.
- Platform, account/channel and item title or ID.
- Literal metric label and displayed value, including abbreviations.
- Visible surrounding context linking the count to the item.
- UTC capture time, local time zone if relevant, observer and method.
- Login state, filters, reporting range and interaction steps.
- Unedited screenshot plus PDF or saved page where practical.
- Wayback URL and archive time, with verification that the count is visible.
- Creator export or permitted API response, clearly labeled by scope.
- Hash algorithm and digest for every original.
- Separate protected copies and custody/transfer log.

How do I prove how many views a video had before it changed?

Can the Wayback Machine save a YouTube view count?

Can I export old YouTube view counts after a video is deleted?
An account owner may have Studio or Analytics records, but YouTube notes that deleted videos can disappear from per-video breakdowns while views remain in aggregates. Save exports with their date range, metric definition and export time, and do not present them as an exact public-counter snapshot.
