For most PS5 owners, the best buy is a 2TB PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe M.2 2280 drive with a factory-fitted heatsink: the WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB heatsink model (WDS200T2XHE). It clears Sony’s 5,500 MB/s recommendation, fits the expansion bay, and gives enough room for a typical library without paying the premium of 4TB. Choose the Samsung 990 PRO 4TB with heatsink if you keep many 100GB-plus games installed, share the console, or want to avoid deleting titles. The officially licensed WD_BLACK SN850P (also sold in 2026 as the SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 850P) is the lowest-anxiety option, while the Corsair MP600 PRO LPX is a proven low-profile alternative.
Every recommendation below is an internal M.2 NVMe SSD with cooling that fits Sony’s dimensions. A bare stick, SATA M.2 drive, PCIe Gen3 model, USB “PS5 SSD,” or oversized Gen5 cooler is the wrong purchase for the expansion bay.

What SSD is compatible with PS5?
A compatible expansion drive is a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe SSD in the console’s M.2 Socket 3 (Key M) slot, with a capacity from 250GB to 8TB and a cooler that stays within Sony’s assembled dimensions. Sony recommends sequential read performance of at least 5,500MB/s, but it does not promise that every drive meeting the numbers will behave identically.

| Requirement | Sony specification | What to check on the listing |
|---|---|---|
| Interface | PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, Key M | Do not buy SATA M.2 or PCIe Gen3 |
| Capacity | 250GB–8TB | Current ceiling is 8TB; older 2022 manuals showing 4TB are outdated |
| Form factors | 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, 22110 | 2280 is the common retail size |

| Thickness including cooler | Up to 11.25mm total: 8.0mm above and 2.45mm below the board | A tall heatsink can prevent the slot cover from closing |
| Cooling | Heat sink or another heat-dissipation mechanism required | Buy the factory-heatsink SKU or a demonstrably compliant cooler |
Both single-sided and double-sided SSDs are supported. A single-sided design generally leaves more room for a cooler, but the finished drive—not its NAND layout—is what must meet the height limit. Sony also says not to add a second heatsink to a drive that already has one.

The WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB with factory heatsink is the strongest all-round choice for a normal PS5 library. Its WDS200T2XHE heatsink model is rated at 7,300MB/s sequential read, 6,600MB/s write and 1,200TBW in SanDisk’s datasheet as cited by ComputingForGeeks. Newegg specification sheets put the assembled height around 8.80mm; SanDisk dimensions cited by the same source give 8.90mm, comfortably below Sony’s 11.25mm limit.
Why the SN850X is the default
- It exceeds Sony’s 5,500MB/s recommendation without requiring a Gen5 premium.
- Independent reviews cited by ComputingForGeeks and PCBuildHelper describe an in-house controller, DDR4 cache and BiCS5 TLC NAND, making it a DRAM-equipped drive rather than a budget HMB/QLC design.
- The heatsink version is listed for PlayStation 5 support; it arrives ready to install.
- It is available in larger capacities, with 4TB and 8TB heatsink versions measuring about 10.31mm—still within Sony’s limit.
October 2026 US snapshots put the 2TB heatsink model at $419.99 on a ComputingForGeeks Amazon catalog and $439.99 in a PCBuildHelper widget. StorageDiskPrices tracked a $338.29 used listing on October 29. These are different sellers and conditions, so compare the exact new or used status.
The SN850X listing trap
The bare WDS200T2X0E/WDS400T2X0E family listings can look identical in a phone search but do not include the required cooler. A bare SSD plus an aftermarket heatsink is only suitable when the complete stack is demonstrably no taller than Sony’s limit. Match the part number ending in the factory-heatsink model instead of relying on the family name.
What is the best 4TB SSD for PS5?
The Samsung 990 PRO 4TB with heatsink is the premium 4TB choice for a large installed library. Samsung rates the PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe 2.0 TLC drive at 7,450MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write. BetterFPS cites 2,400TBW for the 4TB capacity, and Game Idealist lists the heatsink at 8.88mm high and 25mm wide.

- Players who keep many 100GB-plus releases installed at once.
- Households sharing one console profile and storage pool.
- Live-service players who do not want to rotate seasonal downloads.
- Owners planning for major releases such as GTA 6, whose exact PS5 install size Rockstar had not published as of October 12, 2026.
A 2026 planning model using a 75GB average “big game” estimates about 26 games on 2TB and 53 on 4TB. Individual installs vary widely, and current AAA games often exceed 75GB. The 990 PRO also makes the most sense if the SSD may later move into a PC, where its DRAM and high endurance remain useful.

Do not infer that its higher box speed produces faster PS5 loading. Sony cautions that games may not perform exactly like the internal SSD even when an M.2 drive exceeds 5,500MB/s, and console testing commonly tops out around 6,500MB/s.
Should you choose the officially licensed SN850P?
Choose the WD_BLACK SN850P when official licensing and a guaranteed PS5-oriented cooler matter more than lowest price. In 2026, Sony’s Japanese PlayStation Blog identifies the licensed model as the SANDISK Optimus GX PRO 850P NVMe SSD for PS5 consoles; it is the same product family many listings still call WD_BLACK SN850P after the SanDisk and Western Digital brand split.
The family spans 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB capacities, with a 7,300MB/s class rating on 1–4TB models and about 9.89mm assembled height. Some 8TB listings quote 7,200MB/s read. The licensing pays for branding, cooler design and reassurance—not a special in-game speed advantage over a compatible SN850X.

RottenWiFi listed a 2TB example at $462.00. ps5ssd.co.uk recorded an 8TB UK price of £976.99 on October 29, 2026. PlayStation Blog Germany’s 2024 example estimated 200 games on an 8TB SN850P using a 36GB average; that older average is less conservative than the 75GB planning model above, so do not treat either figure as a guaranteed capacity count.
Which alternatives are worth considering?
Corsair MP600 PRO LPX: low-profile, proven compatibility
The MP600 PRO LPX remains a sensible choice when you want a compact aluminium heatsink. The 2TB version is rated at 7,100MB/s read and 5,800MB/s write, includes DRAM, and measures 23 × 80 × 11mm according to Corsair specifications cited by Game Idealist. IGN, updated February 25, 2026, ranked it as its top PS5 SSD and reported about 6,500MB/s in the console test. Later 2026 buying guides shifted their overall default to the SN850X, but the LPX still fits the low-profile brief.
Seagate FireCuda 530R: fast, but nearly at the height limit
The FireCuda 530R heatsink model reads at 7,400MB/s and stands 11.10mm high—only 0.15mm below Sony’s 11.25mm maximum. Seagate states PS5 compatibility for the heatsink version. StorageDiskPrices tracked a 4TB listing at $649.99 on October 29, 2026, with the Amazon title citing 5,050TBW for model ZP4000GM3A073.
That tiny clearance leaves little room for installation error. Seat the drive flat, use the correct spacer position, and confirm the cover closes without pressure. Its officially licensed sibling, the Seagate Game Drive PS5 NVMe SSD, is sold in 1TB and 2TB capacities with the same 11.1mm stack.

Crucial P310: the value 2TB, with a NAND trade-off
The Crucial P310 with a PS5 heatsink reaches 7,100MB/s read and 6,000MB/s write, so it clears Sony’s recommended floor. It uses DRAM-less HMB and QLC NAND, with 440TBW at 2TB. ComputingForGeeks listed a US price of $254.13 on October 19, while ps5ssd.co.uk listed £199.99 (£100 per TB) in the UK on October 29.
It is reasonable for a cost-sensitive game library whose main workload is downloading and launching titles, but the lower endurance and QLC design make it less attractive for heavy write workloads or long-term PC reuse. It is a value pick, not the editorial default.
Other families that can work
Game Idealist’s August 2026 compatibility list also includes the Crucial T500, Lexar NM790 or PLAY 2280, Kingston FURY Renegade, Nextorage NEM-PAB/PAC, ADATA XPG GAMMIX S70 Blade, Patriot Viper VP4300 Lite, addlink A93 and older Samsung 980 PRO when paired with a compliant heatsink. Verify the exact capacity and assembled height: Kingston’s published height is not stated in the cited listing, and reports conflict about whether a 4TB T500 is currently available.
Do not recommend the Silicon Power UD90 for this use: PCBuildHelper lists its 5,000MB/s rating below Sony’s 5,500MB/s recommendation.
Is a PCIe 5.0 SSD worth buying for PS5?
No. The PS5 expansion slot is Gen4, so a Gen5 SSD operates at Gen4 link speed and has no established loading-time benefit. Many Gen5 heatsink assemblies are also physically incompatible: Game Idealist lists the Crucial T705 at about 21.1mm and the PNY XLR8 CS3150 at 17.5mm, both above Sony’s limit.
Samsung’s 9100 PRO with heatsink is listed as physically compatible in 1–4TB capacities at 8.88mm, with the 8TB version exactly 11.25mm, but its extra interface capability is wasted in a PS5. Spend the difference on capacity or retain it for a future PC build instead.
Does a faster sticker mean faster PS5 loading?
Usually not. IGN reported that the PS5’s storage test peaks around 6,500MB/s, so drives significantly above that figure are difficult to justify for this console. In IGN’s example, the Samsung 990 Evo Plus produced 6,137MB/s in the PS5 test despite a 7,250MB/s box rating; Metaphor: ReFantazio loaded in 4.37 seconds from that drive versus 4.47 seconds from the native SSD. That small difference illustrates why fit, cooling, capacity and price matter more than chasing the largest sequential-read number.

How much storage do PS5 games really need?
The console’s advertised internal capacity varies by model: the original CFI-1000 and Japan-exclusive Digital Edition advertise 825GB, the CFI-2000 Slim family has 1TB, and PlayStation 5 Pro has 2TB. Usable space is lower after system software, which is why even Pro owners may want an expansion drive.
| Expansion size | 75GB planning model | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| 2TB | About 26 large games | Most single-console owners |
| 4TB | About 53 large games | Shared consoles and large libraries |
| 8TB | About 106 large games | Collectors who rarely delete games |
These are planning estimates, not guaranteed counts. Patches, texture packs, duplicate language files and expansions can make one title much larger than another. A 250GB or 500GB drive technically meets Sony’s specification but is a poor match for the storage problem this guide addresses.
How do you avoid the PS5 heatsink and SKU traps?
- Confirm the interface. The listing must say PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe and M.2, not SATA or Gen3.
- Confirm the complete height. Add the board and cooler; total thickness must be 11.25mm or less, with no more than 8.0mm above and 2.45mm below the board.
- Use the factory-heatsink part number. The bare SN850X and similar family names are not equivalent to their cooled PS5 SKUs.
- Never stack coolers. Sony specifically warns against adding a second heatsink to a pre-cooled drive.
- Check the cover before powering on. If the slot cover cannot close normally, the cooler is too large or the drive is not seated correctly.
For perspective, Newegg lists the T-FORCE CARDEA A440 aluminium cooler at 12.90mm, which fails the limit, while its 3.70mm graphene version fits. This is why a cheaper bare SSD can become an expensive return once the wrong cooler is added.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you install an M.2 SSD in a PS5?
Prepare a well-lit table, a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver, an optional flashlight and a cool, fully powered-off console. Touch grounded metal before handling the drive to discharge static. The electrical requirements are the same across the original PS5, Slim, Digital Edition and Pro; the cover-removal movement differs between the CFI-1000 and CFI-2000/7000 model groups.
- Update the console system software, shut down completely and unplug every cable. Let the console cool.
- Remove the correct outer cover for your model and expose the M.2 expansion bay. Do not power on with the cover removed.
- Unscrew the bay cover, set the spacer to the 2280 position, and keep the screw and spacer ready.
- Insert the M.2 drive diagonally into the connector, gold contacts first. Press it down gently so the mounting hole rests on the spacer.
- Secure the drive with the supplied screw, replace the metal bay cover and reinstall the console cover.
- Reconnect the console and follow the on-screen format wizard. The first format erases the entire drive; Sony does not offer a partial format.
After formatting, set the default destination at Settings > Storage > Installation Location. To move existing titles, open Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps.
Can PS5 games play from a USB drive?
USB extended storage can store PS5 games, but PS5 titles must be copied back to the console’s internal SSD or M.2 SSD before they can play. PS4 games can run directly from USB extended storage. You can use one internal M.2 expansion drive and one USB extended-storage drive at the same time.
Saves, screenshots and video clips remain on the console SSD according to the August 2026 PlayStation Blog Japan update. All data for one game must remain on a single storage device; the PS5 cannot split one installation across internal, M.2 and USB storage.

Will installing an SSD void the PS5 warranty?
Sony’s support FAQ says manufacturer warranty coverage generally should not be affected when you install a drive that meets the specifications and follow the instructions correctly. Damage caused by forcing an oversized heatsink, jamming the cover or using an unsuitable part may not be covered. Remove the M.2 SSD before sending the console for repair.
The M.2 drive can be moved to another PS5 signed in with the same account without reformatting, which is useful when upgrading consoles or replacing a chassis.
How should you choose between 2TB and 4TB?
Buy 2TB when you want the best balance of price and capacity, mostly play one-person campaigns, or are comfortable archiving completed games. Buy 4TB when deleting and redownloading has become routine, several people share the console, or you keep a large live-service and multiplayer rotation installed.

How we picked
The shortlist prioritizes Sony-compliant PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe drives, factory or clearly verified heatsinks, capacities useful to PS5 owners, and published endurance or controller/NAND information where available. It also weighs the distinction between a generic compatible drive and an officially licensed product, while treating October 2026 prices as volatile snapshots rather than permanent rankings. Drives that miss Sony’s speed recommendation or exceed the physical height limit were excluded.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move my PS5 M.2 SSD to another console?
Yes. Sony allows the installed M.2 drive to move to another PS5 when the same account is signed in, and the drive does not need to be reformatted for that move. Follow the shutdown and removal procedure carefully and keep the drive protected from static electricity.
Do I need to format a used M.2 SSD before installing it in a PS5?
The PS5’s first-time setup formats the entire M.2 drive and erases its contents. Back up anything you need before installation because the console does not provide a partial-format option.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can one game use both the M.2 SSD and USB storage?
No. The PS5 requires all data for a single game to reside on one storage device. Move the complete installation between internal, M.2 and USB storage instead of splitting files.
Is an 8TB SSD officially supported by PS5?
Yes. Sony’s current support information lists 250GB through 8TB, and the 2026 PlayStation Blog also uses 8TB as the ceiling. Older safety-guide PDFs that stop at 4TB are no longer the current capacity reference.
