Start with Settings > Sound > Audio Output: choose the wireless headset as Output Device, decide whether Switch Output Device Automatically suits the way you connect it, and check Output to Headphones if game or chat audio is missing. Then set headphone volume, configure the microphone, and compare stereo with headphone 3D audio. EQ presets and sidetone are optional tuning choices, not universal fixes.
Wireless does not automatically mean Bluetooth compatibility. Sony says third-party Bluetooth wireless headsets are not supported, while USB and analog headsets are generally supported but not guaranteed. Check the exact model and connection method with its manufacturer before buying or troubleshooting.

The first changes should establish the audio route, prevent unwanted switching, and make sure the console is sending the type of sound you expect. Menu names and available controls can vary with the connected headset and the rest of your setup.
Select the headset as Output Device
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Choose Sound, then Audio Output.
- Under Output Device, select the connected wireless headset.
This setting determines the active output. If the headset is connected but the television still plays sound, check this field before changing volume or game settings.

Choose whether automatic switching is wanted
Switch Output Device Automatically controls whether the PS5 changes its active output when an audio device connects. Enable it if you want the console to move to the headset every time it connects. Leave it off if you frequently connect devices but prefer to choose the output manually. Sony notes that the available controls depend on the connected devices and configuration, so two setups may not display identical options.
Check Output to Headphones
Output to Headphones determines which audio is sent through the headset. Open it when game sound, voice chat, or both are routed unexpectedly, and select the option that matches the way you want to listen. Do not assume one choice is correct for every headset, game, or chat arrangement; verify the result in the game you actually play.

PS5 headphone 3D audio is optional. Turn it on if its spatial presentation sounds better to you, then compare it with ordinary stereo using familiar game scenes. The console can create a personalized profile by having you listen to sounds presented at different positions and angles, or you can choose one of five supplied presets.
Create a personalized profile
- Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Enable the headphone 3D-audio option.
- Start the personalization procedure and listen carefully to each sound at the requested position or angle.
- Save the profile, then test it in a game with steady ambient sound and distinct effects.
Use headphones at a comfortable, consistent volume while creating the profile. If voices or effects become less natural, return to the stereo setting or try a different profile; personalization is based on your listening perception, not a guaranteed competitive advantage.
Choose between the profile and the five presets

Keep the setting that gives you the clearest dialogue and most convincing placement. Sony’s description of immersive sound explains the feature; it does not establish that any profile improves aim, reaction time, or other competitive results.

How should I set headphone volume and sidetone?
Headphone volume and sidetone control different things. Volume changes how loud the game and chat are for you. Sidetone, when the headset supports it, feeds some of your own microphone signal back to your ears so you can judge how loudly you are speaking.

Use Settings > Sound > Volume to adjust headphone volume, or open the Control Center and choose Sound. Set a level at which dialogue is clear without forcing you to raise effects to an uncomfortable level. If a game has its own master, effects, or dialogue sliders, balance those only after the console-level volume is comfortable.
Adjust sidetone only if you need self-monitoring
Sidetone is useful when you tend to shout because a closed headset blocks your voice. Raise it until your speech sounds natural, then stop; it does not make your microphone louder to other players. Sony notes that sidetone is unavailable on some headsets, so the control may be missing even when the headset is working normally.
How do I configure the wireless headset microphone?
Use the Control Center’s Mic panel to confirm the input device and set a usable level before joining a party or broadcast.
- Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Select Mic and verify that Input Device is the wireless headset microphone.
- Speak at your normal distance and adjust the microphone level until your voice registers in the console’s Good range.
- Check the headset’s physical mute control as well as the on-screen mute icon; either one can silence the microphone.
Choose a privacy-friendly default
In the PS5 microphone controls, set microphone status at login to Mute if you do not want the mic live as soon as you sign in. You can also enable Switch to Mute when voice chat or broadcasting starts when you want a muted starting state for those activities. Unmute deliberately after confirming that you are ready to speak.

Should I change the PS5 headset EQ?
EQ changes the tonal balance; it does not repair a wrong output route or a muted microphone. On supported PlayStation headsets, the console exposes EQ Presets named Standard, Bass Boost, and Shooter, plus sliders for custom Audio Mode 1, Audio Mode 2, or Audio Mode 3.

Preview a preset with the same game and volume you normally use, then keep it only if you prefer the result. There is no evidence here for one universally superior EQ curve, and a setting that helps one headset or game can make another sound harsh or muddy.
Does the PS5 support every wireless headset?
No. Connection type and exact model matter more than the word “wireless.” PlayStation’s FAQ, published in 2020, says third-party Bluetooth wireless headsets are not supported. Sony’s support guidance also states that not all devices work with the console and directs owners to the headset manufacturer for model-specific information.

“Most” is not a guarantee. Before purchasing, confirm the model’s PS5 support and the required connection method with its manufacturer. A USB adapter may be necessary for a particular headset, but a generic adapter is not universally compatible.

Why is my PS5 wireless headset not working as expected?
The headset connects but no sound comes through it
- Return to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and confirm Output Device.
- Check Output to Headphones so the intended game and chat channels are being sent to the headset.
- Raise volume in Settings > Sound > Volume or Control Center > Sound, then check the headset’s own volume control.
- If the device is not listed, verify its receiver connection and consult the manufacturer’s PS5 compatibility information.
The PS5 does not switch when the headset connects
Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and review Switch Output Device Automatically. If it is disabled, select the headset manually. If it is enabled but behavior is inconsistent, the connected hardware or its configuration may not expose automatic switching; manual selection is the dependable fallback.

Other players cannot hear me
- In the Control Center, open Mic and confirm the headset is the Input Device.
- Speak normally and adjust the level until the meter reaches Good.
- Check both the headset mute button and the PS5 mute icon.
- If you selected a muted-at-login or voice-chat mute default, unmute after joining the conversation.
3D audio or EQ controls are missing
Sony says available settings vary by connected device and configuration. A headset that does not expose supported PlayStation controls may still provide its own hardware controls, but the PS5 cannot promise the same 3D or EQ menus for every model.
Chat/game balance does nothing
Some headsets have dedicated chat/game balance buttons. The PULSE 3D manual, for example, documents controls for microphone mute, mic monitoring, and chat/game balance, but also notes that some games may not support its CHAT/GAME function. Treat those buttons as model-specific features rather than universal PS5 settings.

These are starting points, not rankings. Your preferred profile depends on the headset fit, the game’s mix, and whether you value a wide spatial presentation, a familiar stereo sound, or simple voice intelligibility.

What should I check before blaming the headset?
First separate a routing problem from a compatibility problem. If the headset appears under Output Device and the microphone appears under Input Device, the console recognizes it; missing sound or voice then points to output selection, mute state, volume, or Output to Headphones. If it never appears, check the receiver, connection method, and the manufacturer’s PS5 support statement before changing EQ or 3D settings.
Remember that the console’s controls and a headset’s physical controls can operate independently. A headset mute switch can override an otherwise correct PS5 microphone setting, and a headset’s chat/game dial may not work in every game. Test one control at a time so you know which device changed the result.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a PS5 system update make any Bluetooth headset work?
No. The broad PlayStation FAQ guidance published in 2020 excludes third-party Bluetooth wireless headsets, and later software does not create a guarantee for every model. Check the headset maker’s current PS5 support information and its required connection method.
Does sidetone make my voice louder for other players?
No. Sidetone is local monitoring that sends part of your microphone signal back to your own ears. Other players hear the level produced by the microphone input and chat system, not your sidetone setting.
Why do two PS5 consoles show different sound menus?
