PlayStation Plus Extra is the lowest U.S. tier that includes monthly games, the Game Catalog and online multiplayer. Premium includes those three benefits too, but adds the Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming. Essential includes monthly games and online multiplayer, but not the Game Catalog. That distinction is confirmed in PlayStation’s official Plus comparison.

Which PS Plus tier includes monthly games, the Game Catalog and online multiplayer?
Extra is the minimum tier. It combines the monthly games available to Plus members, the downloadable Game Catalog and online multiplayer. Premium also qualifies, because it contains everything in Extra, but you are paying for Premium’s additional features rather than for better access to those three core benefits.

Essential includes the monthly games promotion and online multiplayer. You can claim the monthly titles to your library and play them while your membership remains active. Essential does not include the Game Catalog, so a catalog listing cannot be opened simply because you subscribe to Plus.
Extra: the answer for all three benefits
Extra adds the Game Catalog to Essential’s benefits. It is therefore the right answer when the requirement is “monthly games, Game Catalog titles and online multiplayer” without needing Premium-only features.

Premium: qualifies, but is not required
Premium includes the Extra tier’s monthly games, Game Catalog and online multiplayer, then adds the Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming. Choose it when one or more of those additions matter to you; upgrading solely to obtain the three benefits in the headline is unnecessary.
How do the three tiers compare feature by feature?
The practical difference is the Game Catalog. Online multiplayer is already part of Essential, so it is not, by itself, a reason to pay for Extra or Premium.

Benefits and availability can vary by game and plan. Use the official PS Plus games page to check a particular title rather than assuming that every game appears in every catalog.
How are monthly games different from Game Catalog titles?
Monthly games are claimed into your library, while Game Catalog games are a rotating selection available to subscribers of the appropriate tier. Neither benefit should be treated as permanent ownership.

Monthly games are tied to an active membership
When you claim a monthly game, it is associated with your library. You can play it while the Plus membership that provides the entitlement is active. If the membership is not active, the game is not playable through that entitlement until qualifying access is restored.
Game Catalog access can change
Extra and Premium let you download or play eligible titles from the Game Catalog, but PlayStation can remove games from the service. A title may therefore stop launching through the subscription even if it remains installed; purchasing that game separately is the way to retain access after its catalog availability ends.

Most purchased games require a Plus plan for online multiplayer. Most free-to-play games do not require Plus for their online multiplayer, so subscribing only to unlock a free-to-play game’s online mode may not be necessary. Check the individual game’s requirements, because “most” is not a guarantee for every title.
Is Premium necessary if I want the Game Catalog?
No. Extra already supplies the Game Catalog along with monthly games and online multiplayer. Premium makes sense when its separate additions—Classics Catalog access, game trials or cloud streaming—are valuable enough to justify the higher price.

Choose Premium for classics
The Classics Catalog is Premium’s additional library of older games. If your interest is specifically in that collection, Extra cannot substitute for Premium.
Choose Premium for trials
Game trials are another Premium-only benefit. They can help you evaluate selected games before deciding whether to buy them, but trial availability is title-specific.

PlayStation says subscriptions renew automatically until canceled. Review the renewal setting and the next charge in your account before starting or changing a plan. For current regional pricing, consult PlayStation’s U.S. Plus plan page and select the storefront for your country rather than applying these dollar amounts elsewhere.
How should you choose between Essential, Extra and Premium?
Use the benefit you actually need as the deciding factor, then check the term price and your region.
- Need monthly games and multiplayer only? Choose Essential. It covers both without paying for catalog access you will not use.
- Need the Game Catalog as well? Choose Extra. It is the lowest tier that combines all three benefits in the question.
- Need classics, trials or streaming? Choose Premium if at least one of those additions is important. Do not select Premium merely because it also includes the Game Catalog.
- Compare the term you will keep. Extra has separate one-, three- and 12-month U.S. prices, while the cited annual prices are $79.99 for Essential and $159.99 for Premium. A shorter term can be useful if you are deciding whether the catalog fits your play schedule.
- Check the game, region and plan. Catalog membership is not universal across every title, and availability can vary by game and country.
Can a PlayStation Store gift card pay for PS Plus?
Yes. PlayStation says retail PlayStation Store gift cards can add credit that the recipient may use to buy any Plus membership. A physical card funds the recipient’s choice; it does not automatically enroll the account in Extra, Premium or any other tier. What should you check before subscribing?
- Do not confuse Essential with Extra. Essential has monthly games and online multiplayer, but no Game Catalog.
- Do not treat catalog access as ownership. Catalog titles can leave the service, and access depends on the appropriate active tier.
- Do not assume Plus is required for every online game. Most free-to-play games waive the Plus multiplayer requirement.
- Check automatic renewal. The subscription continues until you cancel it, according to PlayStation’s plan information.
- Set expectations for PS4 additions. PlayStation’s current plan page says PS4 games have been added only intermittently from January 2026, so do not expect a guaranteed monthly PS4 release pattern.
