For one machine that can run local AI models and handle game development, rendering, and gaming, the strongest all-round choice is a desktop with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 and at least 64GB of system RAM. Its 32GB of dedicated GDDR7 gives it the most headroom among the gaming-focused GPUs compared here, while Windows graphics support fits common Unity and Unreal workflows. The trade-off is model capacity: a single 32GB GPU cannot match a high-memory Mac Studio’s 256GB or 512GB of unified memory. If fitting larger models matters more than PC gaming or CUDA-specific tools, consider the Mac Studio M5 Ultra; for a separate AI host, consider NVIDIA DGX Spark.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Platforms Checked

Which hardware is best for local AI and game development?

For most people who want to develop games and run local AI on the same computer, choose a Windows desktop with an RTX 5090, 64GB or more of system RAM, and enough power and cooling for the graphics card. This is a practical recommendation based on the GPU’s 32GB of dedicated memory and its fit with PC game-development workloads—not a claim that it wins every AI benchmark or can load every model.

There are two sound reasons to choose differently. A Mac Studio M5 Ultra can provide much more memory to a single process, making it the stronger capacity-first option for models that do not fit comfortably in 32GB of GPU memory. NVIDIA’s DGX Spark is designed as a local-AI desktop platform and is more relevant if you want a separate AI host than if you need your main gaming and game-development workstation.

There is no directly comparable benchmark result here for model speed, token generation, or editor performance. Actual results depend on the model, quantization, runtime, context length, workload concurrency, and system configuration. Treat memory figures as capacity information, not as a promise of a particular speed or model-size limit.

Why choose an RTX 5090 desktop?

The RTX 5090 combines 32GB of GDDR7 with NVIDIA’s Blackwell platform. For a developer who needs a Windows PC for an engine, a game, rendering, and local AI, that makes it the most balanced single-machine recommendation in this comparison. NVIDIA lists a 1,000W required system power, so the GPU choice affects the power supply and the rest of the desktop build; it is not just a matter of selecting a graphics card.

That 32GB is dedicated graphics memory, separate from system RAM. A game editor, browser, source tools, and other applications also need system memory, so the recommendation is at least 64GB of system RAM rather than treating the GPU’s 32GB as a replacement for it. This is a planning recommendation, not an engine minimum: Epic’s published Unreal Engine baseline lists 32GB of RAM and 8GB of graphics RAM.

The important limitation is also the key buying decision: 32GB is the GPU-memory capacity, not a guarantee that any particular model will fit. Model weights are only part of the memory requirement; context length, quantization, runtime overhead, and simultaneous workloads affect what fits. A model that exceeds available GPU memory may require choices such as quantization or offloading, and those trade-offs can change responsiveness. No universal model-size ceiling or token-per-second figure is established for this card.

When is a Mac Studio M5 Ultra a better choice?

Choose the Mac Studio M5 Ultra when your priority is fitting larger models in memory, and the constraints of macOS do not conflict with your development pipeline. Apple lists M5 Ultra configurations with 256GB or 512GB of unified memory and 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth in its Mac Studio technical specifications. Those memory capacities are far above the 32GB of dedicated memory on an RTX 5090, but the systems are not directly comparable by capacity alone: they use different platforms and memory architectures.

The large unified-memory configurations can make the Mac a compelling capacity-first workstation, but they do not establish that every model will run, or that it will run faster than on an NVIDIA GPU. Runtime support, model format, context size, and the way an application uses memory still matter. The published specifications do not support a direct speed ranking between the Mac and NVIDIA options.

Check the engine and target-platform requirements before choosing macOS. Unity supports macOS with Metal-capable graphics, but its documentation says Apple-silicon devices support GPU lightmapping only, not CPU lightmapping. Unity also requires Windows versions for console builds. If your workflow needs console targets or CPU-lightmapping, those details may outweigh the Mac’s memory capacity.

Is NVIDIA DGX Spark the right local-AI computer?

DGX Spark is worth considering when you want local AI to run on a dedicated desktop platform rather than share your primary game-development PC. NVIDIA specifies up to 128GB of coherent unified memory, up to 1 PFLOP of FP4 AI performance, and inference support for models up to 200B parameters. These are vendor specifications and positioning, not independent benchmark results or guarantees for every model and workload.

Its main advantage over a gaming desktop is the stated memory capacity and its intended AI role. Its main compromise is that it is not the natural primary choice for PC gaming and general game-development graphics. If the computer needs to run an engine editor, play the game being developed, support a broad Windows graphics workflow, and host local AI, the RTX 5090 desktop is the more balanced recommendation. If those uses can be separated, compare DGX Spark as the AI machine and another system as the development workstation.

Do not read “up to 200B parameters” as “every 200-billion-parameter model will fit and run at a useful speed.” Model architecture, precision, quantization, context length, runtime overhead, and concurrent tasks all affect memory use and performance. The figure identifies NVIDIA’s stated inference support, not a universal workload guarantee.

Should you buy an RTX 5080 or RTX 4090 instead?

The RTX 5080 and RTX 4090 are alternatives if the RTX 5090 is not the right fit, but their memory capacities make them less attractive for local AI. NVIDIA lists 16GB of GDDR7 for the RTX 5080, compared with 32GB on the 5090. That is half the dedicated memory, so it leaves less room for model weights and other GPU-resident work. The 5080 is a current Blackwell-generation card with game-development graphics capability, but the available evidence does not establish a comparable AI speed or value ranking.

The RTX 4090 has 24GB of GDDR6X and DirectX 12 Ultimate support. It offers more GPU memory than the RTX 5080, but it is an older generation than the current Blackwell cards. Its current price and availability were not verified, so do not assume it is automatically the better value. Compare the actual listing and system requirements available to you, and decide whether the extra memory over a 5080 is worth choosing an older GPU.

For both alternatives, GPU memory is only one part of the decision. Confirm that the card and drivers suit the engine, renderer, and target platforms; leave enough system RAM for the editor and other software; and check the complete computer’s power and thermal requirements. The published specifications do not provide a common benchmark that can establish which card will deliver the best local-AI performance for your particular model.

How much VRAM and system RAM do you need?

For local AI, more accelerator memory generally gives you more room for model weights and associated workloads, but no single memory number guarantees that a model will fit. The available options span 16GB of dedicated memory on the RTX 5080, 24GB on the RTX 4090, and 32GB on the RTX 5090; the M5 Ultra Mac Studio offers 256GB or 512GB of unified memory, while DGX Spark specifies up to 128GB of coherent unified memory.

Do not compare those figures as if they were interchangeable VRAM. The RTX figures describe dedicated graphics memory. Apple and NVIDIA describe unified-memory systems, with different platforms and software paths. A larger capacity is useful if your priority is accommodating larger models, but it does not by itself prove higher inference speed or compatibility with every model runtime.

For game development, Epic’s Unreal Engine recommended hardware baseline is Windows 11, a quad-core Intel or AMD processor at 2.5GHz or faster, 32GB of RAM, at least 8GB of graphics RAM, and a DirectX 12-compatible graphics card with current drivers. That is an engine baseline, not a recommendation for simultaneously running a local model and a demanding game project. The 64GB-or-more system RAM recommendation for an RTX 5090 build gives a more useful starting point for sharing one machine among editor, development tools, and AI workloads, but actual needs depend on the project and applications.

Unity’s requirements also make the target workflow matter. Its desktop GPU support includes Windows systems with DX10, DX11, DX12, or Vulkan-capable GPUs and macOS systems with Metal-capable graphics. Those capabilities do not replace checking the requirements for a particular Unity version, project, renderer, and build target.

Can one PC run a local model while developing a game?

Yes, one PC can serve both roles, provided its memory and graphics support are suitable for the model and the engine workload. The trade-off is resource contention: the model and editor may both need memory and graphics resources, and a running game adds another workload. The available information does not quantify the impact on frame rate, editor responsiveness, or inference speed, so avoid assuming that running both at once will feel the same as running either alone.

Plan for the actual workflow rather than a headline model size. Decide whether you need the model available while the editor and game are open, or whether running it separately between development tasks is acceptable. If shared use is central, favor the larger-memory GPU option and adequate system RAM; if your main requirement is loading substantially larger models, a high-memory unified-memory system or dedicated AI host may be a better fit.

Also check the game’s target platform and engine before purchasing. Unreal’s published baseline specifies Windows 11 and a current-driver DirectX 12-compatible graphics card. Unity supports different graphics APIs on Windows and macOS, but console builds require Windows versions of Unity. A machine that handles a model well is not automatically suitable for every engine workflow or target.

What should you check before buying or building?

  1. Set the development platform first. Identify your engine, renderer, operating system, and target platforms. If Unity console builds are part of the workflow, account for its Windows requirement; for Unreal, use the published Windows 11 and DirectX 12 baseline as a starting point.
  2. Decide whether the priority is model capacity or a balanced workstation. For one PC that also handles gaming and development, the RTX 5090 is the all-round recommendation. For much larger memory capacity, compare the Mac Studio M5 Ultra. For AI as a separate role, consider DGX Spark.
  3. Match memory to the whole workload. Compare GPU memory for the NVIDIA cards and unified-memory configurations for the Mac and DGX systems, without treating the figures as equivalent. Leave system RAM for the engine, project, and tools; 64GB or more is a practical starting recommendation for the shared RTX 5090 workstation.
  4. Check power before selecting the rest of the desktop. NVIDIA lists 1,000W required system power for the RTX 5090. Confirm the complete build’s power-supply and cooling needs with the chosen card and system builder rather than assuming a lower-powered existing PC can accommodate it.
  5. Confirm software and driver compatibility. Verify the current engine version’s requirements, the graphics API used by the project, and the target platforms. The documented capabilities are not a substitute for checking project-specific plugins or workflows.
  6. Compare actual prices and availability where you live. Current street prices and stock were not established in the cited sources. NVIDIA’s January 2025 launch MSRPs—$1,999 for the RTX 5090 and $999 for the RTX 5080, with launch availability on January 30, 2025—are historical launch figures, not current November 2026 retail prices.

How we picked

The recommendations weigh accelerator or unified-memory capacity, the fit with local-AI workloads, engine graphics support, Windows and macOS workflow constraints, system-RAM needs, power requirements, and whether a product is intended as a general workstation or a dedicated AI system. The RTX 5090 ranks first for a shared game-development and AI machine because it combines the largest dedicated GPU-memory figure among the gaming cards listed with a strong Windows graphics fit. The Mac Studio and DGX Spark serve different capacity-first and dedicated-host priorities. Current street price, stock, and head-to-head inference speed were not used to rank the picks because comparable evidence was not available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “up to 200B parameters” mean DGX Spark can run any 200B model?

No. It is NVIDIA’s stated inference-support figure, not a guarantee for every architecture, precision, context length, or runtime. Check the specific model’s requirements and supported software before treating that capacity as a fit.

Is unified memory the same thing as graphics-card VRAM?

No. A discrete GPU’s VRAM is dedicated graphics memory, while unified-memory systems use a shared pool under a different hardware and software design. Capacity comparisons can help frame model-fitting needs, but they do not establish equal performance or compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 launch prices still current?

No. The cited $1,999 and $999 figures are NVIDIA’s January 2025 launch MSRPs, not verified current retail prices. Actual prices and availability vary by market and configuration.

Can I build console games on a Mac Studio?

Unity’s documentation says console builds require Windows versions of Unity, so a Mac-only setup does not cover that workflow. Check the requirements for your specific engine, target console, and development program before choosing a primary machine.
