Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S can play a selected set of original Xbox games, not every game released for the first Xbox. The commonly circulated list has 63 entries, but two of those—Battlefield 2: Modern Combat and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas—install Xbox 360 versions on newer consoles. The roster below lists the 61 titles represented as original Xbox games in compiled compatibility lists. Check the Xbox store for your region and the exact edition before buying: availability can differ, and the live catalog is the final check for a specific title.
Which original Xbox games are backward compatible?
These 61 games make up the original-version roster in accessible compiled lists. Xbox’s dated announcements confirm additions to the backward-compatibility catalog, but the roster is not a guarantee that every title or edition is currently purchasable in every region. Check the game’s Xbox store page or your console’s library for the specific version you want.

Why do some lists say there are 63 games?
The 63-entry figure counts two titles whose original Xbox discs install Xbox 360 versions on newer consoles: Battlefield 2: Modern Combat and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. They should not be described as original Xbox versions running through the original Xbox compatibility program. If the distinction matters to you, confirm the game edition shown in the store or installation prompt rather than relying on a list that gives only the title name.
There is no exact present-day native-title count established here by an official catalog page. The 61-title roster above reflects compiled lists, checked where possible against Xbox announcements; spelling, editions, and regional availability are worth verifying individually. Xbox’s 2021 anniversary announcement said that more than 20 original Xbox games were added in that wave, naming Dead or Alive Ultimate, Star Wars Jedi Knight II, Star Wars: Starfighter, and the Otogi games as examples. Its total of more than 70 additions covered Xbox 360 and original Xbox games together, not original Xbox titles alone.

Can I play original Xbox discs on Xbox One or Series X?
Yes, if the particular game is supported and the console has a disc drive. Insert the disc, allow the console to download the playable version, and keep the disc available: it is normally required to launch the game.
- Check the exact title and edition. Confirm that the game is on the compatible roster and check the Xbox store or console listing for the version available in your region.
- Check the console’s drive. A disc-equipped Xbox One or Xbox Series X can read supported discs. Series S and the all-digital Series X cannot.
- Insert the disc. The console should prompt you to download the compatible game version. A disc is a license check, not a substitute for downloading the game data.
- Keep the disc in the drive to play. Removing it means the console cannot verify the disc license for a later launch.
Backward compatibility itself does not add a fee for a supported game you already own. The console still needs to download the game, so allow for storage space and an internet connection during installation. A disc that is not on the supported list will not become playable just because it fits in the drive.
Does Series S play original Xbox games?
Series S can play supported original Xbox games when you own a compatible digital entitlement. It has no disc drive, so an original Xbox disc cannot provide the license on that console.

The same disc limitation applies to the all-digital Series X. Xbox’s newer disc-to-digital licensing feature does not convert original Xbox discs into digital entitlements; Xbox’s Series X FAQ says, specifically about that feature, “XBOX 360 and Original XBOX game discs are not supported.” That statement concerns disc-to-digital licensing, not ordinary backward-compatible disc play on a console with a drive.
How do I find a digital game I already own?
A supported digital title already associated with your account should appear in the console’s Ready to Install section. If it does not, verify that you are signed into the account that owns the game and check whether the exact title and edition are supported in your region.
- Open your game library on Xbox One or Series X|S.
- Go to Ready to Install.
- Find the title and select it to begin downloading.
- After installation, launch it from your library. For a disc license, insert the disc before launching.
A title being backward compatible and a digital copy being available for purchase are different questions. Compatibility means the console can run an eligible version; it does not guarantee that a digital license is for sale in every store or region. Check the listing before purchasing, especially when multiple editions or versions use a similar name.

What changes on newer Xbox consoles?
Xbox said its 2021 additions received higher resolution on supported displays, with the increase depending on the console class. The figures below describe Xbox’s stated resolution scaling, not a promise of a particular frame rate or a resolution mode for every game.
| Console class | Resolution increase Xbox stated for the 2021 additions |
|---|---|
| Xbox Series X or Xbox One X | 4× |
| Xbox Series S | 3× |
| Xbox One or Xbox One S | 2× |
Xbox also said those newly added backward-compatible games receive Auto HDR on supported displays. These statements refer to the 2021 additions; they should not be read as a title-by-title guarantee about every feature or as evidence that a specific game receives FPS Boost. Check the individual game’s listing and console support information for current feature details.
Do original Xbox saves, multiplayer, and achievements carry over?
Original Xbox-era features do not all transfer to the newer compatibility environment. Original Xbox saves do not move to Xbox One or Series X|S, and the legacy compatibility program does not add achievements to original Xbox games.

- Local play: Offline co-op or local multiplayer can work when the original game supported it.

- Newer-console saves: Saves created on Xbox One or Series X|S can move between those newer consoles through cloud saves.
That makes the compatibility experience most straightforward for a solo campaign or supported local play. Do not count on the original console’s online services or old save files when deciding whether a specific game will meet your needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat should I check before buying an original Xbox game?
Use the title list as a starting point, then verify the version and license that will work with your console. The key decision is not simply whether a game name appears in a list, but whether the exact edition is supported and accessible through the ownership route you have.
- Console model: Is there a working disc drive, or must you use a digital copy?
- Ownership type: Do you own a supported digital copy, or a physical disc that must stay in a drive-equipped console?
- Exact edition: Is the listing for the original Xbox game or, in the two exceptions above, an Xbox 360 version?
- Region and purchase access: Does the Xbox store for your region show the edition and purchase option you need?
- Features you depend on: Does your plan rely on original Xbox Live, old saves, online play, or achievements? Those legacy features do not carry forward as described above.
Xbox described the 2021 backward-compatibility wave as its final catalog addition at that time, citing licensing, legal, and technical constraints. That was a statement about the situation in 2021, not a permanent guarantee that no later change could ever occur. For a purchase today, use the live Xbox listing as the practical check.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Knights of the Old Republic backward compatible on Xbox One?
Yes. Both Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords appear in the original Xbox compatibility roster. Check the Xbox store listing for the edition and region available to you.
Can I use an original Xbox controller with Xbox Series X|S?
The compatibility information here covers game titles, not original controller support. Do not assume an original console controller will connect directly; check the controller’s connection type and the Xbox accessory specifications for your particular model.
Can I play these games with Quick Resume?
The cited compatibility information does not establish Quick Resume support on a title-by-title basis. Because features can differ by game and console software, confirm the behavior for the specific title rather than treating it as guaranteed.
Will an original Xbox game run at 60 fps on Series X?
Backward compatibility and resolution improvements do not by themselves establish a 60-fps mode. The Xbox statements cited for the 2021 additions describe resolution scaling and Auto HDR, not a universal frame-rate upgrade.
