For a Switch 2 household that wants tennis as the main event, choose Mario Tennis Fever. It is a dedicated tennis game rated E for Everyone, with local play for up to four people and GameShare for nearby friends on either Switch generation. Choose Nintendo Switch Sports Resort instead if tennis is one part of a larger motion-sports collection. On the original Switch, the dedicated option is Mario Tennis Aces; Nintendo Switch Sports offers motion tennis alongside other sports. The key distinction for parents: Fever is rated E for mild fantasy violence, while both Switch Sports editions are E10+ for Everyone 10+.

Which tennis game should a family buy?
Pick according to the system you own and the kind of tennis night you want. Fever is the clearest choice for a new Switch 2 owner who wants dedicated, character-driven tennis; Resort is more appealing if the household also wants bowling, golf, table tennis, and other motion sports.

Released February 12, 2026, Mario Tennis Fever is exclusive to Switch 2. The game includes Adventure, Tournament, Trial Towers, Mix It Up, Online Room, Ranked Matches, and Swing Mode. Its ESRB rating is E for Everyone, with Mild Fantasy Violence and No Interactive Elements. The rating summary describes fantasy projectiles and special shots that can damage opponents; it is stylized Mario-world action rather than realistic violence. PEGI lists it as 7, and Germany’s USK rating is 6. Those regional ratings are useful context, but parents should still decide based on their own child.
For siblings, local doubles makes Fever a natural shared-screen choice. One Switch 2 owner can also use GameShare to let up to three nearby friends play a session on Switch 2 or original Switch systems. GameShare is temporary access for that session, not a copy the other players keep. Nintendo added GameShare in software version 1.1.0 on July 15, 2026; players need the same software version to play together.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, released October 22, 2026, includes tennis as one of 12 sports: archery, basketball, boxing, tennis, skateboarding, thumb wrestling, bowling, volleyball, table tennis, golf, prop plane, and power cruising. It is also Switch 2 exclusive. Nintendo supports up to four offline players on one system and online Friend Lobbies of up to eight players, with up to two players per console.
The game is rated E10+ for Mild Violence, but that rating reflects the collection as a whole, especially its close-up boxing, where characters punch to drain an opponent’s stamina and can be knocked down. Tennis is the more immediately approachable event, but parents assessing the full game should account for boxing rather than treating the tennis mode’s tone as the entire rating context. The ESRB listing says No Interactive Elements.
Eurogamer’s Matt Wales described tennis and bowling as easy sports to hand to newcomers, while Nintendo Life’s Jim Norman noted three tennis courts in Resort. Table tennis is a separate event and uses subtler wrist movement. That variety makes Resort a stronger all-purpose party pack than a dedicated tennis title, but it is not the choice for someone who wants a deep Mario tennis campaign.

Best dedicated option for original Switch: Mario Tennis Aces
Mario Tennis Aces launched June 22, 2018 and remains a dedicated tennis game on the original Switch. Nintendo lists it as compatible with Switch 2, with behavior consistent with the original Switch version. It supports TV, tabletop, and handheld play, as well as up to four players in local or online singles and doubles. Adventure and Tournament modes provide solo options, and motion controls are optional rather than the only way to play.
The game’s mechanics include Zone Speed and Zone Shot, giving matches a more tactical and timing-focused feel than simple racket-swing tennis. Nintendo’s store lists Mild Cartoon Violence and Users Interact; Nintendo Switch Online is required for online play. For a household with the original Switch—or one that already owns the game on a Switch 2—Aces is the dedicated-tennis route without buying a Switch 2 exclusive.
Best motion party tennis on original Switch: Nintendo Switch Sports
Nintendo Switch Sports launched April 29, 2022 and includes tennis alongside basketball, golf, soccer, volleyball, bowling, badminton, and chambara. It runs on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with the original Switch, according to Nintendo. Tennis uses a Joy-Con swing rather than the more shot-and-special-move structure of Mario Tennis. The game is rated E10+ and carries ESRB descriptors for Mild Violence, Users Interact, and In-Game Purchases.
What is the difference between Mario Tennis and Switch Sports tennis?
Mario Tennis is built around tennis matches, Mario characters, shot selection, and special mechanics. Switch Sports treats tennis as one event in a wider collection and emphasizes swinging a Joy-Con like a racket.
| Choice | How tennis plays | Best fit | Platform and rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mario Tennis Fever | Arcade-style rallies, character abilities, special Fever Rackets, and a Swing Mode | Families who want tennis to be the main game, with multiple ways to play | Switch 2 only; ESRB E, Mild Fantasy Violence |
| Mario Tennis Aces | Dedicated Mario tennis with tactical shots; optional motion controls | Original Switch owners wanting a tennis-focused game | Switch and Switch 2; ESRB E10+ descriptors include Mild Cartoon Violence and Users Interact |
| Nintendo Switch Sports / Resort | Motion tennis built around physical Joy-Con swings; part of a sports collection | Households that want several pick-up-and-play sports | Original Sports: Switch and Switch 2, E10+; Resort: Switch 2 only, E10+ |
Motion tennis is intuitive for many newcomers because the physical swing is easy to understand, but a dedicated Mario Tennis game gives players more tennis-specific modes and mechanics. Fever also has Swing Mode, so the choice is not simply motion versus no motion: it is whether the household wants motion tennis inside a larger sports pack or tennis with a fuller Mario-themed feature set.

Can siblings play Mario Tennis Fever together?
Yes. Up to four people can play locally, and the game’s doubles formats support cooperative play as well as head-to-head matches. For a nearby friend who does not own the game, GameShare can share a session from one Switch 2 to up to three nearby Switch or Switch 2 systems; access ends when that session ends.
There are several ways to make a shared session work for different ages and skill levels:
- Start with doubles. Pair a newer player with someone more comfortable with tennis games instead of putting siblings directly into a one-on-one match.
- Try Trial Towers cooperatively. Play Nintendo’s sibling-play video showed two brothers taking on Trial Towers together as well as a local doubles match.
- Use character styles to simplify choices. The six character types make it easier to pick a broad play style before experimenting with Fever Rackets.
- Keep offline modes in mind. Online rooms and ranked matches are not necessary for a family to play together in the same room.
GamingBoulevard’s family report described sessions with children aged four and six, and Barnevakten highlighted same-screen play as a family strength. Those are individual reviewers’ experiences, not an age guarantee; the ESRB, PEGI, and USK ratings provide separate guidance.
What controllers and safety setup do motion tennis games need?
For four-player local sessions, have enough Joy-Con or Joy-Con 2 controllers for everyone. Nintendo specifically recommends extra Joy-Con 2 for Sports Resort game nights. For motion play in Fever or Resort, Nintendo advises wearing the wrist straps and leaving adequate space around each player. Clear the swinging area before starting, especially when children are playing close together.

For a living-room motion session, plan around a display and space for swings rather than assuming a handheld setup is available for those sports collections. Nintendo says any Joy-Con works as the tennis racket in Resort; Joy-Con 2 is not the only possible racket controller, although it is the accessory Nintendo recommends families have extra for multiplayer.

Is Mario Tennis Fever worth $69.99 for kids?
It is easiest to justify if several people will play together and the family wants a dedicated tennis game with Mario characters. Nintendo’s US store lists a regular price of $69.99, and the game includes multiple multiplayer and solo modes. For a buyer mainly interested in a short solo campaign, the value is less compelling: allthings.how reported an Adventure mode length of roughly three to four hours, and cited recurring criticism of the price for solo-only buyers.
Published reception is generally positive but not unanimous. Pocket Tactics scored it 9/10 and reported about 20 hours of play without frame-rate issues in handheld or docked mode. Allthings.how reported a Metacritic aggregate around 76 and review scores of 7/10 from IGN, 8/10 from GameSpot, 4.5/5 from PCMag, and 8/10 from Nintendo Life; the aggregate and those scores are second-hand reporting, not a direct Metacritic figure verified here. The useful takeaway is to buy for multiplayer and repeatable match play, not on the assumption that Adventure alone will fill many hours.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are realistic tennis sims a better family choice?
Usually not as a first family tennis purchase. Games such as AO Tennis 2, Matchpoint – Tennis Championships, and Tennis World Tour 2 put realistic tennis, timing, positioning, and pro-tour likenesses ahead of cartoon party play. They can suit an older player who already follows tennis, but they are a less obvious introduction for a mixed-age family than Mario’s arcade matches or the Joy-Con swing of Switch Sports.
Recommended Free Tools
For context, Alucare’s 2025/2026 list citing Metacritic gives Mario Tennis Aces 73/100, AO Tennis 2 69/100, Matchpoint 58/100, and Tennis World Tour 2 56/100. These are cited aggregate figures, not a substitute for checking whether a particular simulation’s learning curve and realistic presentation fit the household. Cartoon alternatives include Super Tennis Blast, with local doubles play, and Instant Tennis, a lower-cost motion-control eShop game with local two-player play; the available details do not establish their current prices or age ratings.
How to choose for a mixed-age household
- Choose Fever for Mario characters, dedicated tennis, and local four-player play on Switch 2.
- Choose Resort when tennis should share the spotlight with a dozen motion sports, and the household is comfortable with the whole-game E10+ rating.
- Choose Aces for dedicated Mario tennis on the original Switch, or if it is already in the family’s Switch library.
- Choose Nintendo Switch Sports for original-Switch motion party play that includes tennis and other sports.
- Consider a realistic sim later for a player who wants pro-tour-style tennis rather than an accessible first family game.
How we picked
The recommendations prioritize platform compatibility, age-rating context, same-room multiplayer, whether tennis is the main attraction or one sport among many, and the controller setup a family needs. The ranking favors games whose modes and play style fit mixed-age living-room sessions, while retaining original-Switch options and realistic simulations for households with different needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
