For Commander Shepard’s story, buy Mass Effect Legendary Edition: it collects the single-player versions of Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, with more than 40 DLC packs. It does not include Mass Effect: Andromeda, the original Mass Effect’s Pinnacle Station add-on or Mass Effect 3 multiplayer. The right alternative depends on whether you want the original PC version, a separate Pathfinder adventure, or subscription access—and on which console or PC storefront you use.

There is no single “complete Mass Effect” product covering every release, mode and add-on. Your best value depends on whether completeness means the connected Shepard campaign, the original version of the first game, or access to a separate game such as Andromeda. Which Mass Effect game or edition should I buy?
Choose by the story you want, not by the number of games with “Mass Effect” in their names. Legendary Edition is the straightforward choice for Shepard’s connected trilogy; Andromeda is a distinct game and does not come in that collection.
For Shepard’s story: Legendary Edition
The collection combines remastered editions of the first three games, and decisions carry across those three titles. That makes it a practical starting point if you want to follow Shepard’s story in order without assembling three separate releases and their add-ons. EA describes the package as a single-player collection with over 40 DLC packs. That is a substantial amount of included content, but it is not a claim that every piece of Mass Effect content ever released is present.

EA’s February 2021 announcement also described the package as offering more than 100 hours of gameplay. Treat that as a publisher-level description of the three-game package, not a guaranteed completion time: a player who follows only critical missions will spend less time than someone who explores every side mission, scans every world and replays decisions.
The main advantage is continuity. Choices made in the first game can be carried into the next two, so buying the trilogy together avoids trying to match save files and edition versions later. EA’s product description says, “Your choices seamlessly travel from one game to the next.” That statement applies to the Shepard trilogy included in the collection.

If your reason for buying is specifically to play the original PC release with Pinnacle Station, EA says the digital original purchased through the EA app includes both Bring Down the Sky and Pinnacle Station. This is a different purchase route from Legendary Edition. Check the exact product and storefront before paying; do not assume the remaster includes the add-on just because it includes many other DLC packs.
This option is for a narrowly defined preference: the original presentation of the first game and its missing add-on. It is not a replacement for the three-game remastered package if you want the complete Shepard arc in one purchase. You would need to consider how you will obtain the later games and their classic DLC separately.
For another setting: Andromeda
Mass Effect: Andromeda is a separate Pathfinder adventure, not a fourth chapter bundled with Legendary Edition. Buy it separately if you want that distinct story and setting. Its edition differences are mainly bonus equipment, cosmetics and multiplayer items, rather than additional chapters of the original trilogy.
For temporary access: EA Play
EA and Steam identify subscription access as an option, but a subscription is not the same as owning a permanent copy. Availability and terms can change, so check the current service listing for the title and platform you intend to use. If keeping access after a subscription ends matters to you, compare that limitation against a purchase before choosing.

Does Legendary Edition include all DLC?

For a buyer, the practical distinction is between the large set of included single-player additions and the specific omissions. “Over 40” is not an exhaustive inventory in itself. If a particular classic add-on is the reason you are buying, confirm that exact item is listed for the edition and platform you plan to play.
The included material covers campaign expansions as well as weapons, armor and other single-player extras. You do not normally need to purchase each included item individually. Conversely, seeing an old store page for a standalone add-on does not mean that add-on must be bought again for Legendary Edition; first check the collection’s included-content description.
Why is Pinnacle Station missing?
Pinnacle Station is absent from Legendary Edition. In a GameSpot interview, project director Mac Walters said corrupted source data prevented the team from bringing the add-on into the remaster. EA’s help page separately explains that the original PC game obtained digitally through the EA app includes Pinnacle Station and Bring Down the Sky. That is an option for someone specifically seeking the original edition, not a way to add the station to Legendary Edition.
What about Mass Effect 3 multiplayer?
Legendary Edition does not include Mass Effect 3 multiplayer. The collection is a single-player package, so a buyer should not treat the original game’s multiplayer mode as one of its included DLC items. The current status of the multiplayer service is not established here; do not rely on an old listing or an old guide as proof that a particular online feature is currently available.
Should I buy classic DLC separately?
Only after checking the edition you own and the exact add-on you want. EA’s instructions for classic Mass Effect 2 discuss separately named DLC such as Arrival, Overlord, Lair of the Shadow Broker and Kasumi, along with installation requirements. Those instructions concern the classic release and should not be used as a reason to rebuy content already included in the edition you chose. Is Andromeda included, and what do its editions add?

What Deluxe means on Steam
Steam’s Deluxe Edition description lists Deep Space Explorer Armor, a Nomad skin, a multiplayer booster, a Pathfinder outfit, Scavenger Armor, a Pathfinder Elite Weapon Set, a pet Pyjak and a multiplayer launch pack. Steam also lists multiplayer recruit packs separately. These are the items named for that storefront’s edition, not a guarantee about every disc, resale listing or code sold elsewhere.
What the PlayStation Store listing says
The US PlayStation Store lists Standard Recruit and Deluxe Recruit editions; its Deluxe description includes Turian Soldier and Asari Adept multiplayer packs. Store descriptions can vary by region and platform, so use the listing for your own account and territory rather than assuming the Steam and PlayStation bundles are identical.

When a bonus seems to be missing
A bonus can be a separate entitlement that must be installed, even if you own a Deluxe version. An EA community manager has noted that a pre-order bonus entitlement may require separate installation. Check your platform’s owned add-ons or entitlements and the storefront’s install options before concluding that the full edition is missing. A used physical copy or an expired or already-redeemed code may not provide the same entitlements as a new digital purchase; inspect the specific listing and included code terms rather than assuming.
Do not pay extra for Deluxe solely because you expect a new campaign. The named upgrades are convenience items, appearance changes, equipment and multiplayer-related bonuses. They do not turn Andromeda into an expanded version of the Shepard trilogy.
Is Legendary Edition a remaster or a new-generation release?
It is a remastered collection of the original trilogy, launched for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. It is not marketed as a separate native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition. On current consoles, the relevant question is backward compatibility with the PS4 or Xbox One product.

The account requirement is easy to miss when buying through Steam: owning the Steam license does not remove the need to sign in to an EA account and link the two services. Resolve account access and linking issues before assuming a download or launch failure means the product is defective.

First match the product to your goal and platform. Then verify whether the listing is for the original game, Legendary Edition or Andromeda, and whether its format and included entitlements suit your console, region and account.

- Confirm the listed platform and generation: PS4 or Xbox One for Legendary Edition, rather than assuming a native newer-console version.
- For a used or marketplace listing, inspect the actual product’s region, condition, disc contents and any included codes. Availability or contents are not guaranteed by the game’s title alone.
- Do not assume a one-time code for a bonus remains unused or transferable. Check the seller’s description and the platform’s entitlement details.

Subscription

Can I still buy Mass Effect DLC on Xbox 360?
The Xbox 360 Store stopped selling new games and add-on content on July 29, 2024. Microsoft says previously purchased content remains accessible and that eligible backward-compatible content can still be bought through newer Xbox channels, but this does not establish that every Mass Effect title or DLC remains available or works on every console.
For a legacy purchase, check the exact game and add-on in the current Xbox store and confirm compatibility for the console you intend to use. The store closure is not proof that all past purchases disappeared, nor is it proof that every add-on can still be purchased. Microsoft’s announcement explains the store closure and the distinction between prior purchases and eligible content sold through newer channels.
If you already bought an Xbox 360 add-on, sign in to the same Microsoft account and check your purchase history or download list. Does Legendary Edition include every DLC pack?
