Spoilers for Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3. In Mass Effect Legendary Edition, your final outcome is decided mainly by Effective Military Strength (EMS) when Shepard reaches the Crucible. High EMS opens Destroy, Control and Synthesis; low EMS can leave only one color, and the Mass Effect 2 Collector Base determines which one. Destroy eliminates the Reapers but also every synthetic, Control turns Shepard into the Reapers’ governing intelligence, Synthesis fuses organic and synthetic life, and Refusal lets the cycle continue. There is no officially declared best or canon color. The popular Shepard-survives result requires the red Destroy choice and at least 7,400 EMS in Legendary Edition.

How does Mass Effect 3 decide which ending you can see?
After Shepard reaches the Citadel during the final assault, the Catalyst explains that the Crucible can be used in three ways. The game then checks your EMS and presents the available choices. Earlier decisions almost never select a color directly; they create or remove War Assets, which determine EMS and the severity of the finale.

IGN counts nine permutations: four Destroy versions, three Control versions, one Synthesis version and hidden Refusal. Screen Rant counts five by grouping the variations under the three core colors, then adding the high-EMS Destroy stinger and Refusal. These are different ways of counting the same decision tree.
The last normal opportunity to change which colors appear is the conversation with Admiral Hackett immediately before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters and the trip to Cronos Station. War Assets earned after that lock, including assets from the final missions, can change the epilogue details but not the available colors. If your EMS is too low, restart from the Priority: Cerberus Headquarters save rather than from the Catalyst scene.

How do TMS, EMS and Galactic Readiness work?
Total Military Strength (TMS) is the sum of fleets, people, technology and resources shown on the Normandy’s War Terminal. In the original 2012 game, EMS was TMS multiplied by Galactic Readiness; Readiness started at 50 percent and could be raised through multiplayer and companion applications. Legendary Edition removed Readiness, so its War Terminal number is the effective score.
Check the War Terminal in the Normandy War Room before the point of no return. The following bands are for Legendary Edition, not the original game. The 7,400 line is IGN’s published threshold and is also the player-facing target reported by Screen Rant; RPG Site suggests 7,800 as an optional safety buffer if final-mission events go badly.

These figures describe the remastered edition’s internal scale. Guides that quote 1,750, 2,800 or 3,100 are generally describing the 2012 game, even when the article is written after Legendary Edition launched.
How does the Mass Effect 2 Collector Base affect the finale?
The Collector Base is the only earlier binary choice that can directly remove an ending color, and it matters only in the lowest EMS band. Destroy the base and a very low-EMS playthrough is locked to Destroy. Spare it and that playthrough is locked to Control. Starting Mass Effect 3 without a Mass Effect 2 save defaults to the destroyed-base state.
You can see the choice reflected in the Cerberus Headquarters sequence: the destroyed-base state uses the Reaper human-heart corridor, while the spared-base state uses the human-brain corridor. Above 3,199 EMS in Legendary Edition, both colors are available; between 3,200 and 5,199, the matching base choice can reduce the damage band slightly.
What happens if I choose Destroy?
Take the right-hand path and shoot the Power Conduit four times. The Crucible’s red wave destroys the Reapers and every synthetic being it reaches, including the Geth, EDI and the synthetic components in Shepard’s body. That collateral damage is why Shepard normally dies and why this is the only route with a living-Shepard scene.

At lower EMS, Earth is ravaged, the mass relays and Citadel suffer heavy damage, and the Normandy’s survival depends on the band. At very low EMS, the wave kills everyone on Earth and the Normandy never opens its doors. At high EMS, Admiral Hackett’s Extended Cut narration is hopeful and the war is won, although EDI is absent in most Destroy outcomes. The 7,400-plus Legendary Edition scene shows Shepard breathing beneath the rubble; a love interest may leave Shepard’s name off the memorial wall after seeing the sign of life.
Destroy is the clearest completion of Shepard’s original mission, but it is also the deliberate genocide of synthetic allies. A peaceful Geth–Quarian resolution on Rannoch makes that cost especially stark.
What happens if I choose Control?
Use the left-hand route and approach the two electrical handles. Shepard’s corporeal form dissolves, while memories and personality become the intelligence directing the Reapers. The Reapers withdraw and help repair the relays in the Extended Cut epilogue, but there is no living organic Shepard afterward.
A Paragon-dominant Shepard narrates as an altruistic guardian; a Renegade-dominant Shepard describes an army that protects the strong and destroys threats. Mixed morality keeps the Paragon presentation but changes one line from saving the many to protecting the many. EDI and the Geth survive because Control does not target synthetic life.

What happens if I choose Synthesis?
Walk into the central white beam between the red and blue routes. Synthesis requires 6,200 EMS in Legendary Edition (2,800 in both the original game and its Extended Cut). Shepard adds their energy to the Crucible and dies as the chain reaction gives organic and synthetic life a shared framework, described by the Catalyst as new DNA.

The Reapers stop harvesting and share their knowledge. Earth is not destroyed by the wave; in the Extended Cut, the Citadel and relays are damaged but remain usable. Joker, EDI and the favored squadmate leave the Normandy together, and EDI narrates that every form of life has changed.
Synthesis is the Catalyst’s preferred “ideal solution,” but it is imposed on every person, species and machine without consent. The game never publishes a statistic proving that it uniquely saves the krogan or suit-bound species. If Shepard already brokered peace between Geth and Quarians, the claim that coexistence requires rewriting all biology is open to interpretation rather than a demonstrated necessity.
What is the Refusal ending?
Refusal exists only in the Extended Cut, which is included in Legendary Edition and the Wii U release. After the Catalyst presents its options, select “I reject these choices!” and then “You are wrong,” or shoot the Catalyst without taking a choice. The Catalyst answers, “So be it,” and the Reapers complete the harvest of the current cycle.
Liara’s time capsule survives as a beacon for the next cycle. The final Stargazer scene uses a woman discussing the next cycle’s eventual victory instead of the elderly man used by the other routes. Refusal is always available and is unaffected by EMS; RPG Site describes it as technically a game over rather than a successful ending.
How do Mass Effect 1 choices feed War Assets?
ME1 decisions do not select Destroy, Control or Synthesis. They determine which leaders and species remain available to contribute fleets, characters and epilogue slides.
- Citadel Council: Saving the Council gives humanity a Council seat; sacrificing it leaves other species resentful. Anderson or Udina makes little practical difference in ME2, and Udina holds the human seat by ME3. A fresh ME2 state defaults to the Council’s death.
- Rachni Queen: Destroying the Queen or later Breeder yields Aralakh Company for 25 points. Sparing the original Queen trades those 25 for 100 Rachni Workers who do not betray you. Sparing the Breeder gives both at first, then subtracts 100 when it turns on the alliance. Grunt dies on that mission unless his ME2 loyalty mission was completed.
- Wrex on Virmire: Wrex stands down with eight Charm points or the Family Armor assignment. His survival makes him the krogan leader in ME3; Wreav can be deceived during the genophage decision.
- Ashley or Kaidan: The survivor becomes a later squadmate, romance option and potential War Asset.
- Other reputation choices: Feros, Balak, Saren persuasion and the Bring Down the Sky outcome create smaller character and asset ripples, but no published point value is established for each in the available guides.
Which Mass Effect 2 choices matter most?
- Survive the Suicide Mission: Normandy upgrades—Silaris Armor, Thanix Cannon and Cyclonic Shields—prevent specific deaths. A dead squadmate cannot return as a ME3 War Asset or help secure peace on Rannoch. If everyone dies, Shepard cannot import the save; that is a failed ME2 run, not an ME3 ending.
- Activate Legion: Rannoch peace requires Legion activated and loyal, Tali and Legion alive, and the ME3 Geth Fighter Squadrons mission completed.
- Rannoch peace score: The documented minimum is five points. Tali’s acquittal gives two, destroying the Geth Heretics gives two, the shipboard Charm or Intimidate check gives one, completing Admiral Koris’s mission gives one, and saving Koris gives one. At Priority: Rannoch, at least 75 percent Paragon or Renegade reputation is needed to unlock Rally the Fleet or Warn the Fleet.
- Maelon’s data: Keeping or destroying it changes Eve’s survival odds, which affects whether Wreav can be deceived during the genophage.
- Character loyalty: Miranda, Jack, Samara or Morinth, Thane and Zaeed outcomes affect survival and later appearances. Do not assign Tali or Legion as Suicide Mission squad leader if you want both alive.
Which Mass Effect 3 choices move EMS the most?
The genophage and Rannoch are the largest ethical and military forks. If Wrex leads, Shepard cannot peacefully fake the cure: curing wins krogan support while Mordin dies dispersing it, and sabotaging it requires killing Mordin. If Wreav leads and Eve is dead, Shepard can persuade Mordin to fake the cure, retaining krogan and salarian support and Mordin as a Crucible scientist asset.

On Rannoch, uploading the Reaper code saves the Geth while the Quarian fleet dies; stopping the upload saves the Migrant Fleet while the Geth die. Peace preserves both fleets, although Legion dies completing the upload. Peace is the biggest single War Asset gain tied to a moral choice, and Destroy later kills the Geth if they survived.
Rachni on Utukku, side missions, planet scanning and DLC operations such as Leviathan, Omega, Citadel and From Ashes fill the remaining gap toward 7,400. Leviathan also reveals that its species created the Catalyst. The final Illusive Man confrontation does not change Legendary Edition’s Shepard-survival threshold: Anderson always dies from the gunshot, and the Renegade interrupt can make the Illusive Man shoot himself.
How do I physically select each finale?
- Reach the Catalyst after Shepard, Anderson and Hackett’s forces complete the Citadel assault.
- For Destroy, take the right-hand path and fire at the Power Conduit four times.
- For Control, take the left-hand path and walk toward both electrical handles until the scene triggers.
- For Synthesis, enter the central white beam. It appears only when your EMS is high enough.
- For Refusal, reject the Catalyst’s choices in dialogue or shoot the Catalyst before selecting a beam.
How do the original 2012 versions differ?
Legendary Edition includes Extended Cut content, so its thresholds should not be mixed with an unmodified 2012 copy.

Refusal does not exist in the original 1.00 release. The original game also used Galactic Readiness, which is why old guides show much smaller EMS figures.
Is there a best or canon Mass Effect 3 ending?
No official BioWare or EA source cited here designates a canon color. Destroy is the popular choice because it fulfills Shepard’s mission and can preserve Shepard’s life, but it contradicts a Shepard who treats EDI and the Geth as people. Control resembles the Illusive Man’s ambition, while Synthesis follows the Catalyst’s preferred philosophy and imposes a universal transformation. Refusal protects the right to choose but concedes the galaxy to the Reapers.
Older teaser analysis inferred Destroy from Liara’s appearance, the absence of a green synthesis glow and Reaper or Geth wreckage. A 2026 report about a cancelled Mass Effect: Universe project described a possible 600-years-later setting that would avoid selecting one color, but the leak was not independently verified by named developers. Neither trailer interpretation nor that report is a shipped-game canon ruling.

Why did the endings look so similar?
The 2012 release ended with short versions of the same three beam choices, so players felt that years of decisions had collapsed into a color. Extended Cut added Refusal, longer epilogues, clearer Earth, relay and Normandy damage, and slides that acknowledge the genophage, Rannoch and other trilogy outcomes. It did not create a unique finale for every romance or species conflict: the final action remains one of three beams or refusal, with EMS and morality changing the consequences.
How do I set up a run for every option and the Shepard-breath scene?
- Play or import a complete ME1 and ME2 trilogy save so surviving characters and fleets can become War Assets.
- Keep the Suicide Mission survivors alive, complete Normandy upgrades and preserve Legion, Tali, Wrex, Eve and other major contributors.
- Broker peace on Rannoch when possible and complete the genophage, Rachni, Leviathan and other available alliance missions.
- Scan planets and finish side missions before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters.
- Read the War Terminal before the point of no return. Reach at least 6,200 EMS for Synthesis and 7,400 for every option plus the Shepard-breath Destroy scene; 7,800 is a conservative buffer suggested by RPG Site.
- Make a separate save before the Catalyst. To replay only the final choice after viewing an ending, turn Autosave off after the Catalyst scene so the game does not overwrite the branch you want.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Shepard’s romance determine which ending appears?
No. Romance selections do not unlock a separate finale or change the Crucible color. They mainly alter farewell scenes, memorial-wall behavior and a few epilogue details, while EMS and the Collector Base determine access.
What happens if I start Mass Effect 3 without importing my previous saves?
The game uses a default world state, including a destroyed Collector Base and a dead original ME1 Council. You can still reach the major color endings by building War Assets in ME3, but you lose many imported survivors, political outcomes and high-value alliance opportunities.
Is 7,800 EMS required for the perfect ending in Legendary Edition?
No. IGN’s Legendary Edition chart and Screen Rant’s player target put the Shepard-breath Destroy threshold at 7,400 EMS. RPG Site’s 7,800 figure is an extra buffer intended to cover final-mission losses, not a separate official band.
Can the Geth survive a Destroy ending?
No. The Destroy wave targets all synthetic life, so surviving Geth and EDI are killed along with the Reapers. Their survival on Rannoch improves your War Assets and changes the epilogue before the Crucible choice, but it does not protect them from red Destroy.
Does Extended Cut change the actual Crucible choices?
It adds Refusal and expands the aftermath, but it does not add a fourth successful beam or a romance-specific route. The three successful choices remain Destroy, Control and Synthesis, with EMS controlling damage and survival variations.
