Choose by the size you’ll carry and the camera features you’ll use—not by the tier name alone. For 2026, Apple’s lineup includes the iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, plus the foldable iPhone Duo. Apple’s current model list does not show a new iPhone 17 Plus or iPhone 18 Plus, so “Plus” may mean an older model still sold by a retailer. The standard iPhone is the balanced starting point; Pro models suit people who want advanced camera hardware and controls, while Pro Max adds the largest traditional iPhone screen and Apple’s longest stated playback estimate.

What the current iPhone lineup includes
Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, with availability beginning September 18. Its current model-identification and comparison materials also list iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, iPhone Air and iPhone Duo. The familiar standard, Plus, Pro and Pro Max labels do not guarantee that every size tier will be released in every generation.

The iPhone 17e is a 6.1-inch model with one rear camera, while iPhone Air is a 6.5-inch device with one rear camera. iPhone Duo is a foldable alternative with outer and inner displays. These models do not fit neatly into the traditional four-tier shorthand, so compare the actual model and its features rather than assuming its name tells the whole story.

How size changes the choice
Apple lists the iPhone 18 Pro with a 6.3-inch display and the Pro Max with a 6.9-inch display. A larger screen can make reading, watching video and using expansive interfaces more comfortable; it can also be less convenient for one-handed use and pocketability. Apple’s screen measurements are diagonal, and the actual viewable area is smaller.

Try the size in person if handling matters to you. A Plus model may still be an option through a retailer, but availability, inventory and price vary by market. Don’t assume that buying a large-screen phone means getting Pro cameras: the display size and camera tier are separate considerations.
When the Pro camera features are worth paying for
The iPhone 18 Pro has Apple’s 48MP Pro Fusion camera system, with Main, Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras. Apple says the main camera supports four aperture settings, and the camera app adds controls for aperture, shutter speed and white balance, as well as a histogram. Those options can matter to someone who deliberately adjusts shots or wants more camera reach.

If you mostly point, shoot and share, decide whether you would actually use the additional camera hardware and controls before paying for a Pro model. For buyers who value camera flexibility in a smaller traditional Pro body, the iPhone 18 Pro is the more relevant starting point; the Pro Max is the large-screen option.
Battery claims and performance: what the figures mean
Apple says eSIM-only versions of iPhone 18 Pro provide up to 36 hours of video playback, while eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro Max provides up to 45 hours. These are Apple’s maximum video-playback estimates, not a promise of everyday runtime or independent test results. Usage, network, settings and regional model variant affect battery life.

Apple also claims the redesigned vapor chamber in iPhone 18 Pro delivers up to a 40 percent sustained-performance gain over the previous generation. That is Apple’s claim about sustained performance, not a general guarantee that every task will be 40 percent faster.
Prices, storage and regional compatibility
The Associated Press reported US launch starting prices of $1,199 for iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a reported US starting price of $1,999 for iPhone Duo. These are dated launch figures, not current prices everywhere. Apple’s comparison page displayed price placeholders in the retrieved view, so check the current price in your country, storage tier, carrier offer and retailer before deciding.

Apple says eSIM-only models are sold in a set of countries and territories, while other regional versions have a physical SIM tray. Check the exact model sold in your country and confirm that your carrier supports its SIM setup, particularly before buying across borders or if you need a physical SIM.

- Choose the size first. Decide whether you want a compact everyday phone, a large screen or the largest traditional iPhone body, and consider how it feels in your hand and pocket.
- Choose camera features second. If telephoto reach and manual controls matter, compare the Pro models. If they do not, start with the standard iPhone or consider the 17e or Air according to price and design.
- Compare the actual local offer. Check storage, region-specific SIM configuration, retailer stock and current price. For a Plus-sized phone, verify that the older model is genuinely available and offers the features you want.
Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, Greg Joswiak, described iPhone 18 Pro as making “huge leaps forward” in camera, performance, battery and intelligence. That is Apple’s marketing characterization, not independent testing.
