First check whether the update is actually available for your Galaxy model and carrier. If it is available but the download or installation fails, retry over a reliable connection, free storage if prompted, and then try Samsung Smart Switch on a computer. Back up before recovery or a factory reset; if the phone will not boot normally after a failed update, contact Samsung service.
Is the update missing, or is it failing?
An update that does not appear is different from one that starts downloading or installing and then stops. Availability can depend on the phone’s exact model, original carrier, region, SIM status, and staged rollout. Samsung says releases may be distributed in waves, and an unlocked phone originally sold for a carrier may need that carrier’s SIM to receive its update. Check the carrier’s update information for your model and try again later if the release is still rolling out. Samsung’s update troubleshooting guide explains these availability factors.

To check the installed software details, open Settings > About phone (or About tablet) > Software information. Samsung’s US guide identifies the Baseband version as the software version currently running. Menu names and update paths can vary by model, software version, and carrier. A computer update through Smart Switch is an alternative installation route, not a way around carrier or rollout availability.

- Reconnect and retry: Use a reliable network. Some carriers require Wi-Fi for updates. If the download was interrupted before completion, Samsung says you may be able to resume it from the update notification.
- Free space if prompted: Remove or move files and apps until the phone has the amount of storage it requests. Samsung does not specify a universal storage threshold.
- Allow the installation to finish: During installation, the phone may be unusable, files may be inaccessible, and calls—including emergency calls—may not be possible. Avoid starting an update when you may need the phone.

Try updating with Samsung Smart Switch
If repeated phone-based downloads fail, Smart Switch is Samsung’s official computer-based alternative when it offers an update. You need a Windows PC or Mac, a USB connection compatible with both devices, and an update available for your phone.
- Install or open Samsung Smart Switch on the computer.
- Connect the Galaxy phone to the computer with USB. If prompted, select file-transfer mode.
- Choose Update if Smart Switch offers it, then follow the on-screen prompts.
- Keep the cable connected and do not use the phone until the update finishes. Samsung Support instructs: “Don’t disconnect the USB cable or use your device until the update is complete.” The phone will reboot during the process.
If Smart Switch fails, Samsung suggests checking for computer updates, restarting the computer, reinstalling Smart Switch, trying another USB port or cable, or trying another computer. If you use another cable, verify that its connectors fit both the Galaxy and the computer; there is no single cable specification that suits every model and computer. If the phone will not start after the failed update
Do not jump straight to a factory reset if you need data on the phone. Samsung warns that emergency recovery, including recovery using another computer, can involve a factory reset and data loss. Back up important information first if the phone is accessible and backup is possible. If the phone fails to boot normally after the update failure, Samsung says service is required to reflash the device; contact Samsung support or an authorized service provider rather than assuming a standard retry will resolve it.
