SwiftKey is the best first download for most iPhone owners who want a software replacement for Apple’s keyboard. It combines word-tracing swipe input, strong predictions, personalization and themes. Choose Gboard if you want Google Search, GIFs, stickers and emoji search above the keys; Grammarly Keyboard if writing feedback and AI rewrites matter most; Typewise if a hexagonal layout and larger keys address your accuracy problems; or a Logitech K380 if you would rather type on physical laptop-style keys.
Apple QuickType is still worth trying before you switch. It already offers autocorrection, predictive typing, inline predictions, multilingual typing and QuickPath swipe input. Third-party keyboards can also be blocked in password, banking, enterprise and other secure fields, so keeping Apple enabled is practical.

The right choice depends on how you enter text rather than on a universal speed ranking. SwiftKey is the strongest all-round software alternative, Gboard adds Google services, Grammarly focuses on polished writing, Typewise changes the key layout, and the Logitech K380 replaces the on-screen keyboard with hardware. No current independent comparison establishes one keyboard as the fastest for everyone; language, switching frequency, layout familiarity and privacy settings change the result.
| Option | Input method | Best for | Cost model | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft SwiftKey | Tap and word-tracing swipe | Predictions, customization and everyday use | Free iOS app; optional features may vary | iOS and Android feature sets are not necessarily identical |
| Gboard | Tap, Glide Typing and voice input | Search, GIFs, stickers, emoji search and multilingual tools | Free app with online features | Review permissions and privacy disclosures before enabling connected services |
| Grammarly Keyboard | Tap, swipe and dictation | Spelling, grammar, tone and AI-assisted rewriting | Core keyboard is available; advanced tools require paid plans | Requires iOS 17 or newer |
| Typewise | Hexagonal tap layout and editing gestures | Larger keys and an alternative layout | App availability and paid features vary | Learning period; it is not the same as a word-tracing keyboard |
| Logitech K380 | Physical Bluetooth keys | Long-form typing and laptop-style tactility | Hardware purchase | No touchpad and not a mechanical keyboard |
Should you try Apple QuickType before installing another keyboard?
Yes. If your only goal is swipe typing or better basic prediction, Apple’s built-in keyboard may already solve it without an extra app or permission request.

- OPTIMIZED iOS SHORTCUTS: 12 dedicated multimedia hotkeys for volume, brightness, music & more; one-key control for iPadOS/iOS efficiency
Apple lists QuickType features including autocorrection, predictive typing, inline predictions, multilingual typing and QuickPath. QuickPath lets you trace through letters to enter a word, so test it in Messages or Notes before changing keyboards. Built-in access also means it remains available in restricted fields where iOS may reject third-party keyboards.
Third-party keyboards are subject to iOS rules that can vary by app and context. Password managers, banking apps, enterprise software and other secure text fields may force Apple’s keyboard. Leave QuickType enabled even if another keyboard is your default, and learn the globe-key switch so you can change keyboards when iOS requires it.
Is Microsoft SwiftKey the best all-round iPhone keyboard?
For most people, yes. SwiftKey is the clearest first choice when you want word-tracing swipe typing, useful predictions and more control over appearance than Apple provides by default.
What SwiftKey does well
- Word-tracing swipe input for entering words without lifting your finger between letters.
- Predictions that adapt to your writing and can reduce repeated typing.
- Personalization options and themes for users who dislike Apple’s standard appearance.
- A free iOS app, with feature availability that can differ from the Android edition.
- Support for a very large language range; one 2026 comparison cites more than 500 languages, but you should confirm the languages currently offered in the iOS app.
SwiftKey is especially attractive if you move between short messages, email and social apps and want one familiar gesture across them. Its swipe behavior is closer to what many Android users expect, while the prediction bar supplies a conventional tap-based fallback.
Where SwiftKey is not a perfect fit
Do not assume iOS and Android have identical settings or language features. Apple’s keyboard can also feel more predictable in system dialogs and secure fields because it is built into iOS. SwiftKey may request additional access for connected or personalized functions, so inspect the permission screen instead of enabling every option automatically.
Is Gboard the best iPhone keyboard for search, GIFs and emoji?
Gboard is the best fit when the tools around the keys matter as much as the keys themselves. It puts Google Search, GIFs, stickers, emoji search, Glide Typing, voice input and multilingual functions into one keyboard interface.
Rank #2
- Pocket-Sized Everyday Carry Design: Ultra-compact two-fold bluetooth keyboard at just 7.8 oz folds into a small form with premium PU leather cover, making it the lightweight travel companion for typing anywhere
- Specifically for Phones and Tablets: Compact keyboard layout optimized for mobile devices provides physical typing capability for iPhone, iPad, and Android tablets with 10.76 x 4.07 inch unfolded size, ideal for on-the-go messaging and notes
- Bluetooth 5.1 with 33ft Range: Connect to up to 3 devices simultaneously. Switch with dedicated keys – no re-pairing, no cable juggling.(Note: Turn on power before pairing)
- PU Leather Protection: Integrated PU leather protective cover shields the keyboard from scratches while adding a premium look, letting you carry it confidently in bags or briefcases without additional cases
- USB-C Rechargeable: Recharge with the included USB-C cable and rely on auto-sleep standby up to 150 days, so the travel keyboard is ready when your work moves
Why people choose Gboard
- Search for a fact, place or phrase without leaving the app you are typing in.
- Find an emoji by describing it instead of scrolling through categories.
- Insert GIFs and stickers from the keyboard’s accessory row.
- Use Glide Typing for continuous finger movement across letters.
- Switch languages and use voice input from the same interface.
Those features make Gboard useful for chats where you frequently share reactions, links or visual replies. It is also a sensible choice for multilingual users who want tools grouped together rather than installed as separate extensions.
What to check before enabling Gboard’s connected features
Search, cloud synchronization, voice input and personalization can involve network access. Review the permissions shown by iOS and Google’s current privacy disclosures before turning on optional online features. A keyboard that can send text to a service is a different privacy trade-off from a keyboard used only for local prediction; choose settings that match the sensitivity of what you type.
Is Grammarly Keyboard worth it for better writing?
Grammarly Keyboard is aimed at people who want correction and rewriting tools inside other iPhone apps, not merely a different key arrangement. Its 2026 App Store listing says it provides spelling, grammar and conciseness suggestions in more than 20 languages, while typing support covers six languages.
Writing features
- Real-time spelling, grammar and conciseness suggestions.
- Tone detection to flag how a message may sound to its reader.
- Multi-word predictions and swipe typing for faster entry.
- Voice dictation with automatic cleanup of the transcript.
- Generative AI rewrites for changing wording without copying text into a separate editor.
Grammarly describes the keyboard as working directly in iPhone and iPad apps, so you do not need to copy and paste text into a separate website. Advanced clarity, vocabulary, tone transformations and other AI-assisted capabilities are tied to paid plans; the basic keyboard experience should not be confused with unlimited access to every writing feature.
Compatibility and privacy details
Grammarly support states that the iOS product requires iOS 17 or newer and retains native emoji and swipe functionality. Its App Store information says dictation audio is not stored. That statement applies to Grammarly’s stated handling of dictation; it does not mean every keyboard feature is processed locally or that all data settings are identical across products. Read the current in-app controls before granting Full Access.
Is Typewise better if you hit the wrong keys on Apple’s keyboard?
Typewise is the specialist option for people who want a fundamentally different layout. It uses hexagonal keys and gesture-based editing rather than simply copying Apple’s rectangular arrangement.
Rank #3

- Convenient Layout: QWERTY layout with hot keys customized for all iPads, including volume, music control, brightness, etc.
- Long Battery Life: Energy-saving design and automatic sleep mode allow up to 4 months between battery changes. (based on 2 hours' non-stop use per day) (2 X AAA batteries included)
- Package contents: Arteck HB098 Bluetooth Keyboard, 2 X AAA batteries, welcome guide, our 24-month warranty and friendly customer service.
How the Typewise layout works
The hexagonal design gives keys more surface area and changes the spacing between common letter combinations. Gestures handle actions such as capitalization, deletion and restoring text, reducing the need to reach for small modifier keys. Some users may make fewer accidental presses, especially on a small phone, but the layout requires a learning period.
What Typewise cannot promise
Typewise should not be presented as the same kind of word-tracing swipe keyboard as SwiftKey. The available comparison does not provide a controlled accuracy test, so there is no evidence that its unusual layout universally improves speed or error rates. Try it for several days with your normal vocabulary before deciding whether the gestures are worth relearning.

Can a physical keyboard be better than an iPhone keyboard app?
Yes, particularly for long documents, spreadsheets or messages where you want tactile feedback. The Logitech K380 is a portable Bluetooth keyboard with laptop-style keys and pairing for three Bluetooth devices.
What the K380 changes
- Physical travel and key spacing replace the limited surface of an on-screen keyboard.
- Three-device Bluetooth pairing lets you move between an iPhone and other compatible devices.
- A portable form factor works for travel, cafés or a temporary desk.
- The keyboard is not mechanical, so it will not provide the switch feel or sound of a mechanical model.
- There is no touchpad; navigation still relies on the iPhone’s screen or other controls.
A hardware keyboard does not improve autocorrection or add grammar suggestions by itself. It is the right answer when the problem is fatigue, cramped thumbs or the feel of glass—not when you need better language prediction.
How to pair a Bluetooth keyboard with an iPhone
- Turn on the keyboard and put it into Bluetooth pairing mode. On the K380, select one of its device channels before pairing.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
- Tap the keyboard’s name when it appears under “Other Devices.”
- Enter the pairing code shown on the iPhone using the physical keyboard, then press Return if iOS asks.
- Open Notes or another text app and type a short test. If the wrong layout appears, check the hardware-keyboard language settings under Settings > General > Keyboard.
How do you install and switch to a third-party iPhone keyboard?
Installation is similar for the software options, but the permission choice determines which features work. Keep Apple’s keyboard listed so you have a fallback.

- Quiet Scissor-Switch Keys: Low-profile scissor switches reduce typing noise in coffee shops, open offices, and shared rooms while keeping each keystroke comfortable and controlled
- Download the chosen keyboard from the App Store and open its setup screen.
- Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard.
- Select the app’s keyboard from the list.
- Tap the keyboard’s name and review whether it requests Allow Full Access. Grant it only when you understand why the app needs network-connected, search, synchronization, voice or AI features.
- Open Messages, Notes or Mail, tap a text field, then touch and hold the globe or emoji key.
- Select the keyboard you want. Reorder keyboards in the Keyboards list if you want one to appear first.
- Test ordinary text, emoji, dictation and swipe input. Then test a password or banking app separately; iOS may switch back to Apple automatically.
If a keyboard disappears, return to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards and confirm it is still enabled. Updating the app and restarting the iPhone can resolve an extension that does not load, but a secure field may be behaving exactly as iOS intends.
Which iPhone keyboard has the best swipe typing?
SwiftKey is the clearest recommendation for word-tracing swipe typing. Gboard also offers Glide Typing, and Grammarly includes swipe typing alongside writing assistance. Apple QuickPath is a capable built-in option, so compare each keyboard with the same paragraph and language before deciding.
Swipe accuracy depends on the language dictionary, names and technical terms in your messages, screen size and how often you change languages. A keyboard that predicts your personal vocabulary well can feel faster than one with a theoretically different gesture system. There is no independent test establishing a universal winner.
Which keyboard offers the best autocorrect and predictions?
There is no objective winner across every language. SwiftKey emphasizes adaptive predictions and personalization; Apple QuickType supplies integrated autocorrection, predictive and inline suggestions; Grammarly adds correctness and conciseness feedback; Gboard combines predictions with search and multilingual tools.
Test with your real writing rather than a benchmark sentence. Include names, abbreviations, accented words and the languages you actually use. Also check whether an app’s advanced suggestions require Full Access or a subscription before treating them as part of the free experience.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How private are third-party iPhone keyboards?
Privacy depends on the keyboard, the permissions you grant and the features you enable. A keyboard with Full Access may connect to online services for search, voice processing, cloud synchronization, personalization or AI; a keyboard configured for local features may send less information. Do not treat any product as universally private without checking its current settings and policy.

Permission checks to make
- Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards and inspect each keyboard’s Full Access status.
- Read the app’s privacy labels and policy before enabling search, voice, synchronization or generative AI.
- Disable optional connected features if you type confidential work, health or financial information.
- Keep Apple’s keyboard available for passwords and other restricted fields.
Grammarly states that dictation audio is not stored. Typewise’s on-device prediction and privacy descriptions are vendor claims that should be checked against the current release. Gboard’s online tools are useful, but readers who are concerned about data sharing should review Google’s permissions and disclosures before enabling them.
How do the five alternatives compare on languages, cost and compatibility?
The table below separates documented capabilities from factors that vary by release or plan. App Store ratings are included only as dated snapshots, not as typing benchmarks.
| Keyboard | Language information | Writing and input tools | iOS and access notes | August 16, 2026 U.S. App Store snapshot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SwiftKey | More than 500 languages cited by a 2026 comparison; verify current iOS availability | Predictions, word tracing, personalization and themes | Free app; iOS features may differ from Android; permissions vary by feature | Approximately 4.6 stars from 121,000 ratings |
| Gboard | Multilingual tools; exact current language count not stated | Search, GIFs, stickers, emoji search, Glide Typing and voice input | Connected features can involve permissions and online processing | Approximately 4.1 stars from 59,000 ratings |
| Grammarly Keyboard | Suggestions in 20+ languages; typing in six languages | Grammar, spelling, conciseness, tone, dictation cleanup, predictions, swipe and AI rewrites | Requires iOS 17 or newer; advanced tools require paid plans | Approximately 4.7 stars from 221,000 ratings |
| Typewise | Current language count not stated | Hexagonal keys and gestures for capitalization, deletion and restoration | Learning period; privacy and on-device claims should be verified in current settings | Approximately 3.8 stars from 844 ratings |
| Logitech K380 | Follows the hardware keyboard layout selected in iOS | Physical laptop-style keys and three-device Bluetooth pairing | Works as hardware rather than an iOS keyboard extension; no touchpad; not mechanical | Not an App Store product |
The ratings were captured on August 16, 2026 in the U.S. App Store and can change at any time. They indicate store sentiment at that moment, not typing speed, accuracy or privacy.
Which iPhone keyboard should you choose?
Use this decision guide:
- Choose SwiftKey if you want one free software alternative that prioritizes word tracing, predictions and visual customization.
- Choose Gboard if you regularly search, share GIFs, find emoji by keyword or switch languages while chatting.
- Choose Grammarly Keyboard if your priority is cleaner work messages, tone feedback, dictation cleanup or AI rewrites and you use iOS 17 or newer.
- Choose Typewise if accidental taps are your main problem and you are willing to learn a hexagonal layout and editing gestures.
- Choose the Logitech K380 if long typing sessions are uncomfortable on glass and you want a portable physical keyboard.
- Stay with QuickType if you mainly need reliable system integration, multilingual typing, inline predictions or QuickPath without granting another app access.
You can install more than one software keyboard and switch with the globe key, but keeping the list short makes the keyboard chooser easier to use. Start with the option that addresses your actual pain point, test it in your own languages and apps, and leave Apple enabled for restricted fields.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use two iPhone keyboards at the same time?
You can install and enable multiple keyboards, then switch among them with the globe key while a text field is active. Only one keyboard is active for a field at a time, and iOS may override your selection in secure fields.
Do iPhone keyboards work inside password managers and banking apps?
Often they do not. Apps can restrict third-party keyboard extensions to protect credentials, so Apple’s keyboard may appear automatically even when another keyboard is your default elsewhere.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Will changing keyboards delete my learned words or text replacements?
No; installing another keyboard does not remove Apple’s text replacements. Each app may maintain its own prediction or personalization data, so learned suggestions may not transfer when you switch.
Can I use an iPhone keyboard with an iPad?
Software keyboards that support iOS may also support iPadOS, but the exact requirement is set by each App Store listing. A Bluetooth keyboard such as the K380 can pair with compatible Apple devices, subject to the device’s keyboard-layout settings.
