Choose a Humblewood species by starting with the character you want to role-play, then use each species’ ability emphasis and signature traits to support that idea. There is no universally strongest option. A Strig makes sense for an imposing owl-like guardian, while a Corvum suits an observant investigator; neither is automatically better outside the concept and campaign you build around it.
This guide compares the ten original species in the Humblewood Campaign Setting: five birdfolk and five humblefolk. It also explains the current 2014/2024 rules situation and notes the six additional Wesfolk species introduced elsewhere in the line, so you can confirm what your Dungeon Master allows before creating your character.

What is Humblewood?
Humblewood is an unofficial Dungeons & Dragons 5e setting created by Hit Point Press under the Open Gaming License. Its original campaign takes place in Everden, a woodland threatened by spreading fires, and includes a complete adventure for characters from level 1 through level 5. The core Campaign Setting contains ten animal-based playable species.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Hit Point Press describes the setting as beginner-friendly while retaining enough complexity for experienced groups. That combination makes species choice especially important: the animal identity gives a new player an immediate role-playing anchor, while the traits provide meaningful exploration and combat options for a longer campaign.
How do I choose a Humblewood species?
Use the following sequence instead of beginning with a class spreadsheet. It keeps the character concept in charge while still exposing mechanical trade-offs.
- Describe the fantasy in one sentence. Write something concrete, such as “a crow-like archivist who notices every inconsistency,” “a fox negotiator who survives by reading people,” or “a tiny mouse hero who refuses to abandon the group.” If the sentence is vivid, the appropriate species usually becomes easier to see.
- Shortlist two or three species with the right identity. Start with the animal and social cues in the species descriptions. Birdfolk cover aerial, nocturnal, communal and predatory concepts; humblefolk cover endurance, craftiness, diplomacy, defensive magic and small-team mobility.
- Use the listed ability emphasis as a tie-breaker. Intelligence can support an investigative or knowledge-focused concept, Dexterity can support a mobile scout, and Constitution can reinforce an endurance-based hero. These emphases are not a substitute for a concept, particularly if your table uses the 2024 ability-score rules.
- Check the signature traits. Glide, Darkvision, Expert Climbers, Natural Burrowers, Standing Leap and Keen Senses affect what you can attempt outside combat. Social, defensive and support traits can matter every session even when they do not add damage.
- Ask what the party is missing. A group without a scout, durable front-liner, support character or social specialist can benefit from a species that naturally covers that gap. Keep the role secondary to the character you actually want to portray.
- Compare the final two in play, not just on paper. Ask which one gives you more story hooks, which one changes exploration in interesting ways and which one remains enjoyable during conversations, travel and investigation as well as fights.
What are the ten original Humblewood species?
The core setting divides its playable options into five birdfolk and five humblefolk. The descriptions below explain the character ideas each package naturally supports without declaring a universal ranking.
Corvum
Corvum are crow-like birdfolk with a listed +2 Intelligence emphasis. Glide and Talons establish an aerial, physical baseline, while Learned and Appraising Eye point toward observation, analysis and the ability to notice value or meaning in details. Choose Corvum for an investigator, tactician, scholar, archivist or suspicious traveler whose cleverness is central to the story.
Gallus
Gallus are chicken- or rooster-like birdfolk with a listed +2 Wisdom emphasis. Glide and Wing Flap provide birdfolk mobility, while Communal, Militia Training and Of the People reinforce a practical protector who draws strength from belonging to a community. Gallus fit village leaders, reliable support characters, watch members and heroes whose first instinct is to help their neighbors.
Luma
Luma resemble doves or pigeons and have a listed +2 Charisma emphasis. Their Glide and Wing Flap traits support an expressive aerial identity, while Touched and Fated suggest a character marked by unusual forces or an important destiny. Luma work well for a charismatic envoy, mystic, performer, oracle or reluctant hero who believes events have chosen them for a reason.

Raptor
Raptor birdfolk draw on hawks, eagles and other birds of prey. Their listed +2 Dexterity emphasis pairs with Glide, Talons, Keen Senses, Woodland Hunter and Hunter’s Training. This is the clearest starting point for a mobile scout, ranger, hunter or watchful guide, especially when the character’s identity includes tracking, speed and comfort in the wilderness.
Strig
Strig are owl-like birdfolk with a listed +2 Strength emphasis. Glide and Talons support a physical guardian, while Darkvision adds a nocturnal advantage and Patterned Feathers gives the species a distinctive visual hook. Choose Strig for a warrior, sentinel, intimidating protector or character whose relationship with darkness is part of the narrative.
Cervan
Cervan are deer-like humblefolk with a listed +2 Constitution emphasis. Practical and Surge of Vigor describe a character who keeps moving, carries their share and survives setbacks through determination. Cervan are a natural fit for durable adventurers, long-distance travelers, steadfast defenders and heroes whose defining quality is endurance rather than flash.
Hedge
Hedge are hedgehog-like humblefolk with listed +2 Charisma and +1 Wisdom emphasis. Natural Burrowers, Spiny Quills and Curl Up create an unusually defensive package, while Forest Magic and Speak With Bugs open a nature-connected or eccentric magical identity. Hedge suit diplomats, empathetic guides, hedge-mages, community healers and characters who seem harmless until their defenses matter.

Standing Leap and Nimbleness reward movement, while Take Heart and Team Tactics make cooperation part of the species’ identity. Pick Jerbeen for an upbeat skirmisher, courier, acrobat or morale-boosting team player who becomes more effective when allies coordinate.
Mapach
Mapach are raccoon-like humblefolk with listed +2 Wisdom and +1 Constitution emphasis. Darkvision and Expert Climbers expand exploration routes; Resilience, Scroungecraft and Skulker support a survivor who can improvise tools and solutions from limited materials. Mapach are especially suitable for resourceful explorers, crafters, scavengers, practical scouts and characters who always have a backup plan.

Vulpin are a strong starting point for negotiators, infiltrators, illusion-minded characters and clever schemers who prefer winning without a fair fight.
Which Humblewood species fits my character concept?
These are starting points rather than a power ranking. Each recommendation follows from the listed ability emphasis and traits, and another species can be equally good when its story fits your character better.

- Clever investigator or schemer: Corvum’s Intelligence emphasis, Learned and Appraising Eye support a fact-finder. Vulpin combines Intelligence and Charisma with Evasive and Bewitching Guile for a more social or deceptive approach.
- Supportive community character: Gallus has Communal and Of the People alongside a Wisdom emphasis. Jerbeen’s Take Heart and Team Tactics make encouragement and coordination central to the concept.

- Aerial or nocturnal identity: All five birdfolk have Glide. Strig is the clearest nocturnal option because its current listing also includes Darkvision, while Raptor, Corvum, Gallus and Luma each give the flight concept a different personality and ability emphasis.
Which Humblewood species is best for a rogue, ranger, wizard or fighter?
Humblewood species are not locked to particular classes, and the setting does not establish a single best class pairing. Choose the class for the actions you want to take, then select the species whose story and traits make those actions feel natural.
Rogue
Vulpin is a natural fit for a social or deceptive rogue because Evasive and Bewitching Guile reinforce misdirection. Corvum suits an investigative rogue who relies on Intelligence and Appraising Eye, while Mapach supports a skulking problem-solver with climbing and scavenging tools. Jerbeen works when the rogue concept is an acrobatic team player rather than a lone infiltrator.
Ranger
Raptor offers the most direct hunting identity through Dexterity, Keen Senses, Woodland Hunter and Hunter’s Training. Mapach fits a survivalist ranger who climbs, scavenges and improvises; Strig supports a stronger, more imposing wilderness guardian; and Corvum can work for a perceptive tracker whose strength is analysis.
Wizard
Corvum’s Intelligence emphasis and Learned trait align with a scholar-mage. Vulpin adds Charisma for a more manipulative or illusion-focused wizard, while Hedge provides a nature-connected magical identity through Forest Magic and Speak With Bugs. Luma is an option when the wizard’s story centers on being Touched or Fated rather than academic study.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Fighter
Strig’s Strength emphasis, Talons and imposing owl-like identity suit a front-line fighter. Gallus can portray a militia-trained community defender, Cervan a resilient guardian who relies on stamina, and Mapach a practical fighter who solves logistical problems between battles. The species should reinforce why the character fights, not simply provide a preferred ability score.
What should I compare when two species both fit?
When the shortlist is close, compare the finalists on four questions. The answer that keeps producing story ideas is usually more valuable than a small numerical advantage.
- Which has the stronger story fit? Imagine the character’s family, work, allies, rivalries and visual silhouette. If one species makes the backstory and relationships immediately easier to picture, that is meaningful evidence.
- Which listed ability emphasis supports the expected role? Under a 2014-style presentation, this can influence your starting priorities. Under 2024 rules, confirm how your group assigns ability-score increases before treating it as decisive.
- Which exploration feature will you actually use? Glide, Darkvision, Expert Climbers, Natural Burrowers, Standing Leap and Keen Senses can open routes, reveal information or change how the party approaches obstacles.
- Which party contribution is missing? Communal, Take Heart, Team Tactics, Practical, Resilience, Forest Magic and the social features can create value that is not represented by damage calculations.
Are Humblewood species compatible with 2024 D&D?
Hit Point Press says the core setting was designed for the 2014 rules, is compatible with the 2024 rules and has a 2024 player-character update. The publisher also describes the core setting and Humblewood Tales as designed for the 2014 rules and backward compatible.
Before using an older character guide, ask your Dungeon Master which rules version governs ability scores, species traits and character creation. The current D&D Beyond species index is a useful reference for the listed trait summaries, but your table’s source restrictions take priority. A campaign may allow the original ten species while excluding later options or requiring the updated PDF.

Which Humblewood books include playable species?
The original Campaign Setting is the relevant book for the ten species compared here. Hit Point Press describes its hardcover as containing the setting, playable species, an adventure and a bestiary; the current product page marks that hardcover sold out, so check the retailer and edition before purchasing.
The digital D&D Beyond edition is useful if you want online compendium access and Character Builder support. Humblewood Tales expands the setting with a sourcebook and adventure anthology, but it is not required to choose among the original ten species.

The current Humblewood line also lists six Wesfolk species: Capran, Eluran, Mustel, Seeta, Sylph and Tilia. They are outside this ten-species comparison. The wider line is therefore larger than the original Campaign Setting, and a table using later material should ask whether those options are available before settling on a shortlist.
What mistakes should I avoid when choosing?
- Picking an ability score before a character. A mechanically convenient emphasis will not sustain a concept you do not enjoy portraying.
- Assuming every birdfolk can do the same things. Glide is shared, but Raptor’s hunting traits, Strig’s Darkvision, Gallus’s communal features and Corvum’s investigative traits create very different play patterns.
- Ignoring noncombat traits. Climbing, burrowing, darkvision, social support and improvisation can matter during most sessions, including adventures with few fights.
- Mixing rules editions without checking. The 2014 presentation and the 2024 update may handle ability scores and character options differently. Use the version your Dungeon Master has approved.
- Treating later Wesfolk as part of the original ten. Capran, Eluran, Mustel, Seeta, Sylph and Tilia belong to the broader current line and may require a different sourcebook or campaign permission.
- Expecting an objective “strongest” species. No published ranking or comparative win-rate study establishes one. The meaningful choice is the package that makes your intended story and party role easier to play.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Humblewood species in a regular D&D campaign?
Yes, if the Dungeon Master allows the setting’s sourcebooks and agrees on the rules version. The species are written as 5e player options, but campaign tone, available books and character-creation rules remain table decisions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do all Humblewood birdfolk have the same flight rules?
The five core birdfolk listings include Glide, but their other traits differ substantially. Raptor, Strig, Corvum, Gallus and Luma therefore share an aerial identity without being interchangeable characters.
Are the six Wesfolk species replacements for the original species?
No. Capran, Eluran, Mustel, Seeta, Sylph and Tilia expand the broader Humblewood line. They do not replace the ten species in the original Campaign Setting, and access depends on the books your group permits.
Should a new D&D player choose a simpler Humblewood species?
Humblewood was designed to be beginner-friendly, so any of the ten core options can work. A species with an obvious fantasy, such as a Raptor hunter or Cervan endurance hero, may be easier to role-play at first, while traits such as Forest Magic or Bewitching Guile add more decisions for players who want them.
