The best storage for professional video editing is a tiered setup, not one oversized disk: use a fast internal or external NVMe/SSD for the operating system, applications, cache and active high-resolution timelines; add a separate media SSD when possible; and use a RAID or NAS HDD array for capacity, collaboration and backup copies. For portable 8K work, the LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5 is rated up to 6,700 MB/s read and 5,300 MB/s write. Desktop editors can trade peak speed for capacity with a LaCie 2big RAID or 2big Dock, while shared teams need a properly configured 10GbE or faster NAS. The right choice depends on codec, simultaneous streams, interface, capacity, fault tolerance and whether you work alone or across a network.

What makes a storage drive suitable for professional video editing?

Video editing stresses storage differently from ordinary file storage. A drive must sustain reads while the editor scrubs, plays several streams, writes cache files, generates previews and exports versions. Short burst speeds shown on a specification sheet matter less than sustained throughput under your actual codec and stream count.

Adobe’s Premiere storage guidance, updated January 7, 2026, says to use fast SSD or NVMe storage and configure drives efficiently. Its recommended layout is a high-speed system drive, a separate SSD for Media Cache, and a high-speed NVMe drive for media. Avid likewise states that disk performance has a significant effect on video playback and recommends keeping local media on a separate drive where possible.

That guidance explains why a single large spinning disk is rarely the best answer for 4K or 8K timelines. HDDs remain useful for inexpensive capacity, archives and shared volumes, but high-resolution playback generally requires an SSD, a RAID array or both.

Should you buy an NVMe SSD, a SATA SSD, an HDD RAID or a NAS?

Choose the storage class according to the job. NVMe and other SSDs handle active projects and cache; HDD arrays provide economical capacity; and a NAS adds shared access but introduces network and configuration requirements.

Storage class Best use Strengths Limitations
Internal or external NVMe SSD Operating system, applications, cache and active 4K–8K timelines Highest practical latency and throughput for a workstation; compact models can be installed internally or in a fast enclosure Higher cost per terabyte; enclosure, cable and host port can reduce advertised speed
SATA SSD HD, lighter 4K work, cache or a secondary project drive Lower cost than NVMe and still much faster in access time than a spinning disk Interface ceiling is lower than NVMe and the fastest Thunderbolt SSDs
Desktop HDD RAID Large local libraries, ingest staging and several 4K streams High capacity at a lower cost per terabyte; RAID can raise sequential throughput Mechanical latency, noise and rebuild exposure; RAID 0 has no fault tolerance
NAS with HDDs Team projects, central media, backups and long-term storage Shared access and large pools; HDDs are appropriate for bulk media and backup volumes Network bandwidth, NAS configuration and client traffic determine playback; it is not automatically a backup
NAS with SSDs or SSD cache Real-time 4K-plus playback for multiple clients Lower latency and better concurrency than an all-HDD pool Higher cost and capacity planning complexity; cache does not replace a complete data copy

For a solo editor, an NVMe or fast external SSD is normally the first performance purchase. Add a desktop RAID or NAS when the project library, backup set or number of editors has outgrown local SSD capacity.

How much throughput do 4K, 6K and 8K projects need?

Use the following figures as workflow targets, not guarantees. Codec compression, bit depth, frame rate, stream count, effects and the host computer can change the result. Seagate’s figures are manufacturer guidance, while Avid’s values describe qualified workflows.

Workflow Practical storage guidance What the figure means
HD and lower-resolution video At least 550 MB/s SSD according to Avid A baseline for responsive playback rather than a promise for every codec
Single or light 4K external editing About 500–600 MB/s sustained Seagate’s practical target for direct 4K work from an external drive
Several 4K streams or 4K/6K multitasking At least 1 GB/s; Avid lists a 1,000 MB/s Thunderbolt RAID 0 array on Mac Useful headroom for multiple streams, but effects and codec decode can still limit playback
Heavy 4K, 6K and workstation media Avid lists a 2,500 MB/s Thunderbolt 3 SSD on Mac and M.2 NVMe storage on Windows workstations A higher-throughput class for demanding timelines
8K editing Multi-gigabyte-per-second SSD throughput Seagate’s guidance for 8K; the exact requirement depends heavily on codec and stream count

Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4 provide up to 40 Gb/s, while Thunderbolt 5 provides up to 80 Gb/s. USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gb/s) or USB4 can suit many 4K projects. Those are link rates, not guaranteed file-transfer speeds: the drive, enclosure, cable, operating system and shared bus all have to support the same class.

Which portable drive is best for 8K editing on location?

The LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5 is the strongest fit when you need portable, real-time 8K editing. Seagate’s official guide lists up to 6,700 MB/s read and 5,300 MB/s write, giving it the multi-gigabyte-per-second class expected for demanding 8K media.

Why it fits field workflows

  • Its performance target is aimed at real-time 8K editing rather than simple file backup.
  • A portable SSD avoids the vibration, noise and slower seek behavior of a bus-powered spinning disk.
  • The high-speed interface can also serve 4K and 6K projects with substantial headroom.

What to verify before buying

  • Your computer must have a compatible Thunderbolt host port and a cable rated for the advertised link.
  • An enclosure connected through a slower USB port will be bottlenecked even when the SSD itself is capable of higher throughput.
  • Keep a second copy of camera originals; a portable editing drive is not a backup merely because it is rugged.

Which drive is best for studio or DIT card ingest?

The LaCie 1big Dock SSD Pro is designed for studio and DIT work that combines fast media with direct card ingestion. Seagate describes it for 6K and 8K workflows and rates it up to 2,800 MB/s.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A dock-style drive can reduce handoffs during an ingest day: copy cards to the working volume, create a second verified copy, and then move the project to the editorial or shared-storage system. Its role is different from a capacity-focused archive. Plan enough space for camera originals and the temporary copies needed to verify them before cards are cleared.

Which desktop RAID is suitable for several 4K streams?

The LaCie 2big Dock and 2big RAID are desktop options for editors who need more capacity than a portable SSD. Seagate reports up to 550 MB/s and positions these systems for several simultaneous 4K streams when configured in RAID 0.

When RAID 0 helps

RAID 0 stripes data across both disks, increasing sequential performance and presenting one working volume. That can make a desktop array practical for multi-stream 4K media when a single HDD would not sustain the required rate.

Why RAID 0 must have an independent copy

RAID 0 has no fault tolerance: if either disk fails, the striped volume is lost. Use it only as a performance workspace and maintain an independent backup on another device or storage system. Do not treat the array as the sole location for camera originals, project files or completed masters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dock versus RAID-only enclosure

The 2big Dock is useful when card connectivity and desktop ingest are part of the workflow. The 2big RAID is the simpler choice when the priority is a dedicated RAID volume. In either case, match the enclosure’s interface to the workstation and leave room for cache, proxies and renders rather than filling the array to its nominal capacity.

Which internal NVMe models suit workstation cache and media?

For internal workstation storage, Blackmagic Design’s HyperDeck Extreme manual lists Samsung 980 Pro NVMe, Samsung 970-series models, SanDisk Extreme PRO 3D and WD Black NVMe models as recommended media for 8K Apple ProRes HQ and cache recording.

These recommendations identify compatible performance classes rather than a requirement to use one exact model. Check the motherboard’s M.2 slot type, thermal clearance and supported PCIe generation before installation. A drive that fits physically can still be limited by the slot, firmware or thermal throttling. Keep the cache on a fast local volume even when the project media is on a NAS, because cache traffic competes with shared media reads when both use the network.

How much storage do professional video projects require?

Estimate capacity from camera originals first, then multiply for working files. Seagate’s 2025 planning ranges are roughly 50–100 GB per hour for HD, 300–400 GB per hour for 4K, 600 GB–1 TB per hour for 6K, and 1–2 TB or more per hour for 8K.

Capture format Approximate raw-footage size per hour Planning implication
1080p HD 50–100 GB Even modest projects need room for multiple camera cards and versions
4K 300–400 GB A multi-day shoot can consume several terabytes before proxies and exports
6K 600 GB–1 TB Fast local or shared storage becomes important as footage and stream counts rise
8K 1–2 TB or more Use multi-gigabyte-per-second SSD storage for active work and plan capacity aggressively

Seagate recommends allowing two to three times the raw-footage size for renders, proxies and export versions. For example, 4 TB of 4K camera originals can require 8–12 TB of working capacity before a separate backup copy. The multiplier is a planning range, not a rule that every project will consume exactly the same amount.

A practical capacity formula

  1. Estimate hours of footage for each resolution and multiply by the relevant range above.
  2. Add duplicate camera-card copies until ingest and verification are complete.
  3. Reserve two to three times the raw-footage estimate for proxies, cache-related working files, renders and export versions.
  4. Keep a separate backup volume outside the active editing drive or RAID 0 workspace.
  5. Recalculate when you add multicamera angles, high-frame-rate footage or multiple language and delivery versions.

How should you configure storage for Premiere Pro?

A three-volume layout keeps operating-system activity, cache traffic and media reads from fighting over one device. The exact drive letters or mount names differ by operating system, but the roles remain the same.

  1. System and applications: Install the operating system, Premiere Pro and plug-ins on a fast internal SSD or NVMe drive.
  2. Media Cache: In Premiere Pro, open the application’s Media Cache settings and point cache files to a separate fast SSD when available. Keep this volume local rather than routing cache traffic through a slower NAS connection.
  3. Active media: Store current camera originals and project media on a high-speed NVMe or SSD. A separate media drive is preferable to reading media from the system volume.
  4. Proxies and previews: Place proxies, preview files and render outputs on a volume with enough free space to absorb temporary growth. Use the same fast tier when playback is constrained by storage.
  5. Archive and backup: Copy verified project files and finished masters to a capacity-oriented RAID or NAS, then keep another independent copy for footage that cannot be recreated.
  6. Test the layout: Scrub a representative timeline with the expected number of streams, then monitor whether dropped frames occur while cache and preview files are being generated.

Adobe’s principle is simple: fast SSD or NVMe storage and efficient drive separation improve editing performance. Moving every role onto one faster disk is usually less effective than assigning the busiest roles to separate devices.

Can you edit directly from an external drive?

Yes, provided the external drive sustains the required rate and the connection is fast enough. Seagate’s guidance places 500–600 MB/s as a practical sustained target for direct 4K external editing, at least 1 GB/s for multiple 4K or 6K streams, and multi-gigabyte-per-second SSD throughput for 8K.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a short, certified cable and connect the drive directly to the computer rather than through a hub that shares bandwidth with other devices. Check the host port label, enclosure specification and operating-system compatibility together. A fast SSD attached through a 10 Gb/s link cannot deliver the full performance of a Thunderbolt-class enclosure, and a nominally fast cable cannot upgrade a slower host port.

External editing is convenient for travel and project handoff, but protect the drive from accidental unplugging and maintain a second copy. Before a paid project, copy a representative media folder, play the actual timeline and confirm that sustained performance—not just an empty-drive benchmark—meets the workflow.

Can you edit from a NAS or shared storage?

Yes, but network capacity and NAS design become part of the editing system. Adobe recommends 10Gbps-plus networking for smooth NAS performance, and its guidance identifies 10Gbps as appropriate for shared 4K workflows. Slower links can work for lighter or proxy-based projects, but they leave less headroom for several users and streams.

When a NAS is the right choice

  • Several editors need the same media without passing portable disks around.
  • The library is too large or too valuable to keep on one workstation.
  • You need centralized backup jobs, permissions and long-term capacity.

QNAP and TrueNAS design guidance

QNAP’s guidance distinguishes the roles clearly: HDDs suit large media volumes and backups, while SSDs suit real-time 4K-plus playback. QNAP also describes Thunderbolt NAS systems that can be mounted for shared Final Cut Pro editing.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

TrueNAS recommends SMB3, an appropriate RAIDZ layout and local SSD or NVMe cache for clients. Cache can reduce latency for frequently accessed data, but it does not create a second copy of footage. Size the NAS for usable capacity after RAID or RAIDZ overhead, not the sum printed on the disks.

Keep cache local even when media is shared

Store the project media on the NAS when collaboration requires it, but keep Premiere Media Cache on a local SSD or NVMe volume. This avoids sending high-volume temporary reads and writes across the network and leaves network bandwidth for shared media playback.

How do RAID levels affect editing speed and safety?

RAID is a performance, capacity or availability choice; it is not a substitute for backup. RAID 0 can be fast but offers no fault tolerance. Redundant layouts can keep a volume available after a disk failure, yet they still cannot protect against deletion, corruption, theft or a damaged NAS.

Layout or approach Primary benefit Editing implication Required protection
RAID 0 Striped performance and full combined capacity Useful as a replaceable working volume for high-throughput media Independent backup of every project and source file
Redundant RAID or RAIDZ Continued operation after a qualifying disk failure, depending on layout Better for shared or capacity-focused storage than a single-disk volume Separate backup; monitor rebuilds and keep spare capacity
Single disk plus backup Simple administration and predictable recovery Suitable for smaller projects when throughput meets the codec Backup must be current and stored separately

Choose RAID 0 only when its speed benefit justifies treating the volume as temporary. For a NAS, select a redundant layout that matches the number and size of disks, then calculate usable capacity after parity and filesystem overhead.

What should you check before purchasing a high-performance editing drive?

Use this checklist to avoid buying a drive whose headline specification does not match the workstation.

  • Codec and stream count: Identify whether the timeline is single-stream 4K, multicamera 4K, 6K or 8K, and include effects and high-frame-rate clips.
  • Sustained throughput: Compare the workflow targets above with sustained read and write figures, not only burst or peak values.
  • Interface: Match Thunderbolt, USB4, USB 3.2 Gen 2, M.2 NVMe or 10GbE end to end.
  • Host compatibility: Confirm port type, cable rating, enclosure support, operating-system compatibility and available PCIe lanes.
  • Usable capacity: Subtract RAID or RAIDZ overhead and reserve space for proxies, renders, cache and exports.
  • Thermals: Ensure an internal NVMe drive or external enclosure has adequate cooling for sustained transfers.
  • Fault tolerance: Decide whether a failed disk should interrupt the workflow, and budget for an independent backup regardless of RAID.
  • Portability and ingest: Field editors may value a rugged portable SSD or card-ingest dock more than a larger desktop enclosure.
  • Shared access: Teams should plan 10GbE or faster networking, SMB3 configuration and local cache volumes for each workstation.

What are the most common performance problems and fixes?

Playback is smooth at first, then drops frames

The drive may be exhausting its burst cache or thermal headroom. Copy a representative project, run a sustained transfer and monitor playback after several minutes rather than judging an empty-drive benchmark. Improve cooling, move active media to a faster SSD or reduce simultaneous streams with proxies.

An advertised Thunderbolt speed is not appearing

Check every link: host port, cable, enclosure controller and drive. A USB-only port, non-certified cable or shared hub can reduce a Thunderbolt-class device to a slower bus. Test the drive directly on the computer with the correct cable.

A NAS timeline stutters when another editor starts work

The shared network or HDD pool may lack concurrency. Move cache to each workstation’s local SSD, verify a 10Gbps-plus network path, and consider SSD storage for real-time 4K-plus playback. Separate ingest, backup and editing traffic where the NAS design permits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The project fills the drive unexpectedly

Camera originals are only the first allocation. Proxies, previews, renders and multiple exports can add two to three times the raw-footage size according to Seagate’s planning guidance. Relocate completed projects, clean approved temporary files and expand the working volume before it reaches capacity.

A RAID array reports healthy but files are missing

RAID health only describes the array’s disk status. Check the recycle bin, project paths and permissions, then restore from the independent backup if data was deleted or corrupted. Do not rebuild or reformat an array until the recovery plan is clear.

Which setup should you choose?

Editor profile Recommended storage pattern Reason
Mobile 8K editor LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5 for active media, plus an independent backup Portable multi-gigabyte-per-second performance for on-location timelines
DIT or studio ingest operator LaCie 1big Dock SSD Pro for card ingestion and fast staging, then verified copies to production storage Combines high throughput with a dock-oriented ingest workflow
Solo desktop 4K editor Internal NVMe or fast SSD for system, cache and active media; add a 2big Dock or 2big RAID for capacity Separates responsive work from bulk storage and provides room for multiple streams
Workstation doing 8K ProRes or cache recording Qualified internal NVMe such as the models listed in Blackmagic Design’s HyperDeck Extreme manual Places high-demand media and cache on a local, low-latency device
Small collaborative team 10GbE-plus NAS with HDD capacity, SSD playback tier or cache, SMB3 and local workstation cache Supports shared access while keeping temporary cache traffic off the network

In most professional setups, the best answer is a combination: fast local SSD/NVMe for what is being edited now, capacity-oriented RAID or NAS for the library, and an independent backup for recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do proxies reduce the storage-speed requirement for 8K footage?

They can reduce the playback bandwidth needed during the edit because the application reads smaller proxy files instead of full-resolution originals. Proxy generation still requires write capacity and time, and the original high-resolution media must remain available for conforming and final export.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much free space should remain on an editing SSD?

Leave a deliberate working reserve rather than treating the advertised capacity as usable project space. Cache growth, render files and export staging can otherwise force constant cleanup and make sustained performance less predictable; size the drive so the project and its temporary files fit without approaching full capacity.

Can a NAS replace an off-site backup?

No. A NAS can centralize media and provide redundancy, but a local failure, accidental deletion, ransomware event or physical damage can affect the NAS and its disks together. Keep at least one independently stored copy of irreplaceable camera originals and finished masters.

How should I validate a drive before using it on a paid production?

Use a copy of representative footage in the exact codec and resolution, fill the timeline with the expected stream count, and scrub, play and render for an extended session. Confirm that the drive, cable, enclosure and host remain stable under sustained transfers; a short peak-speed test alone does not reproduce an editing workload.
