Choose the game first if you want music tied to a particular adventure. Then verify whether the release is that game’s original soundtrack, a Pixel Remaster presentation, a later game’s separate album, or a rearranged cross-game collection. Choose by composer when you want a creator’s work across several titles: Nobuo Uematsu’s original Final Fantasy VII score and his cross-game Modulation arrangement album are different products, while Masayoshi Soken’s credits on Final Fantasy XIV include other composers.
The biggest buying mistakes are treating the original Final Fantasy VII, VII Remake and VII Rebirth albums as interchangeable; assuming every “Pixel Remaster” CD is the same game; and confusing Remake Plus, Special Edit and the standard Remake set. Use the guide below to match the recording, edition, format and exact track version to what you actually want.

How do I choose a Final Fantasy soundtrack without buying the wrong edition?
Make the decision in this order: identify the game, identify the recording type, check the credited composer or composers, confirm the exact song version, and then verify format and availability. A familiar title alone is not enough because one game can have a standard set, a supplement and a limited edition with different contents.
- Name the game or listening goal. Decide whether you want the original FFVII adventure, Remake, Rebirth, a specific classic game, a composer-led sampler or a newer title.
- Classify the music. “Original soundtrack” normally means music associated with that game’s release. “Pixel Remaster” identifies a remastered presentation of a named classic game. “Arrangement” means the source themes have been rearranged rather than presented as that game’s complete original score.
- Read the composer credit carefully. Uematsu is credited for composing, arranging and producing the original FFVII album. Soken appears in the XVI liner-note description and shares the Before Meteor credit with other composers; neither fact makes every related album a solo-composer release.
- Match the track version. Repeated themes can have different arrangements, vocal versions or scene-specific recordings. The Remake listing separates music by disc, and Rebirth identifies a “LOVELESS ver.” of “No Promises to Keep.”
- Confirm the physical medium. Four- and seven-disc CD sets, a vinyl record and a Blu-ray require different playback hardware and have different collecting implications.
- Check the current product page. Stock, prices, packaging notes and digital-code validity can change. A publisher listing marked unavailable should not be treated as a promise that retailers have stock.
Which soundtrack should I buy for a specific game?
If one game is the reason you are shopping, buy that game’s own listing before considering a composer sampler. This avoids substituting a remake, a remaster or an arrangement for the recording you remember.

Original Final Fantasy VII
The FINAL FANTASY VII ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK is the direct choice for the original game’s score. Square Enix credits Nobuo Uematsu with composing, arranging and producing it, and lists 85 tracks across four CDs. The publisher’s product page gives an approximate November 2021 product release date; that date describes the album product, not the year the game debuted. The checked publisher listing currently says unavailable, so inventory should be verified before purchase.
Final Fantasy VII Remake
The seven-disc FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK is a separate purchase from the original FFVII album. It covers Remake as played and includes the Uematsu-composed song “Hollow.” It is not the same product as Remake Original Soundtrack Plus or the Special Edit Version.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH Original Soundtrack is another separate seven-disc set. Its track information includes “No Promises to Keep LOVELESS ver.” Square Enix distinguishes that recording from another released version, so anyone seeking the vocal performance heard in a particular scene should check the complete track list rather than relying on the song title alone.
Classic games in Pixel Remaster form
The physical FINAL FANTASY IV, V and VI PIXEL REMASTER Original Soundtrack CD releases are each tied to a specific numeral. Square Enix describes their tracks as remastered versions of the earlier digital Pixel Remaster soundtrack albums. The approximate March 2026 date shown for these CDs is a CD product-release month, not the original release date of the games.
Choose the numeral first: FFIV, FFV and FFVI are not interchangeable collections. The FFV listing includes “Battle at the Big Bridge” and “Dear Friends.” The FFVI listing includes “Terra’s Theme” and “Celes’s Theme,” plus several language-specific opera-track entries. If a vocal language matters, inspect those entries before ordering.

What is the difference between an original, Pixel Remaster and arrangement album?
These labels describe how the music relates to the game. An original soundtrack is the game-specific release; a Pixel Remaster CD presents the remastered version associated with one named classic game; an arrangement album reshapes source material, often across several games.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

An original soundtrack is the safest choice when you want the score connected to a particular game and its scenes. The three FFVII-era products illustrate why the full title matters: the original game, Remake and Rebirth each have their own release.
Pixel Remaster soundtrack
“Pixel Remaster” does not mean “the original cartridge or disc recording.” It identifies the remastered presentation used for the Pixel Remaster version of a named game. Compare both the numeral and the edition wording before buying, especially when a retailer shortens the title.
Arrangement album
Modulation – FINAL FANTASY Arrangement Album is the composer-led option for listeners who want themes from several games in newly arranged form. Square Enix’s description says, “Nobuo Uematsu himself arranges FINAL FANTASY masterpieces in ‘Modulation’.” It is a vinyl record, not one game’s complete original soundtrack on CD. The included MP3 code has stated redemption limits and may have an expiration condition, so treat the physical record as the dependable part of the purchase and check the current code terms.
Which Final Fantasy albums make sense when I am choosing by composer?
Composer-first shopping works when you want a creator’s contribution across games, but credits must be read as written. A listing can identify a composer without being a solo-composer album.

Nobuo Uematsu
For Uematsu’s original FFVII work, choose the four-CD FINAL FANTASY VII ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK. For Uematsu’s cross-game arrangements, choose Modulation. The two products serve different purposes: one documents a single game’s score, while the other rearranges themes drawn from multiple Final Fantasy titles, including material associated with V, VI, VII and X.
Masayoshi Soken
The FINAL FANTASY XVI ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK is the clearest Soken-linked newer option in the listed products because the publisher identifies him in its liner-note information. It is a seven-disc release, but its song coverage has an important omission: Square Enix states, “The theme song by Kenshi Yonezu, ‘Tsuki Wo Miteita – Moongazing’ is not included.” Do not buy it expecting that theme.
BEFORE METEOR FINAL FANTASY XIV ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK is useful for listeners exploring early XIV music, but its credit is collaborative. The publisher lists Uematsu, Soken and other composers. It should not be described or purchased as a solo Soken album. It is also one Blu-ray rather than an ordinary audio CD, so confirm that your player supports the format.
Why composer names alone can mislead
A composer may contribute one song, a group of themes or an arrangement within a larger production. Album titles, liner-note credits and track lists answer different questions: the title identifies the product, the credits identify contributors, and the track list shows what recordings are actually present. Use all three before treating an album as a composer anthology.
What are the biggest Final Fantasy VII Remake edition traps?
The words “Plus” and “Special Edit” materially change what you receive. They are not decorative subtitles for the same seven-disc package.

Original Soundtrack standard set
The standard FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK is the seven-disc core release for music heard in Remake. It is the starting point when you want the game’s soundtrack rather than a supplement or limited bonus package.
Original Soundtrack Plus
Remake Original Soundtrack Plus concentrates on previously unreleased in-game background music, with particular emphasis on cutscene material. Treat it as a supplement to the standard set, not as a replacement for it. A buyer seeking the main album and a buyer seeking additional background cues may reasonably need different products.
Special Edit Version
The Remake Special Edit Version combines the seven-disc soundtrack package with a bonus-track CD. Square Enix describes it as a first-run limited edition, and the checked publisher page currently says unavailable. Verify the edition name and contents in the listing; a marketplace title that omits “Special Edit” may describe only the standard set.

How should I verify a track, vocal version or bonus disc before ordering?
Use the product’s disc-by-disc track list, not a search result snippet or a remembered song title. This is especially important for Remake, Rebirth, FFVI’s opera material and albums that add bonus media.
- Copy the exact product title. Include “Original,” “Plus,” “Special Edit,” “Pixel Remaster” or “Arrangement Album” when searching.
- Check every disc heading. Confirm whether the desired cue is on the standard set, a supplement or the bonus CD.
- Match subtitles and versions. “No Promises to Keep LOVELESS ver.” is a specific version. Do not assume every listing of “No Promises to Keep” is that recording.
- Check language labels. FFVI’s opera entries are listed in multiple languages. Select the edition or track presentation that matches your preference.
- Read omission notices. The XVI listing explicitly excludes “Tsuki Wo Miteita – Moongazing.” An album can be authentic and still omit a prominent theme.
- Confirm the medium and disc count. Seven CDs, one Blu-ray and a vinyl record are not interchangeable even when they are all called soundtracks.
What formats, packaging and availability details matter?
Physical format affects playback, storage and what is included. The listed products span four-CD, seven-disc, vinyl and Blu-ray releases, so the format should be a purchase criterion rather than an afterthought.

How we picked the guide’s starting albums
The selections use the publisher’s documented game association, recording type, composer credits, track and song-version details, disc count, physical format, edition differences and stated availability. They do not rely on personal listening tests, mastering comparisons, pressing-quality claims or resale forecasts. Where a product page does not establish a price or current stock, those details are intentionally left to the live listing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Pixel Remaster music the same as the original soundtrack?
No. The Pixel Remaster CDs present remastered versions associated with the named Pixel Remaster game. A classic-game original-era release and a Pixel Remaster release can therefore contain different recordings even when the compositions are familiar.
Does the FF16 soundtrack include “Moongazing”?
The publisher’s listed Final Fantasy XVI soundtrack explicitly says Kenshi Yonezu’s “Tsuki Wo Miteita – Moongazing” is not included. Check the track list if that theme is essential to your purchase.
Can I play Before Meteor in a regular CD player?
The listed BEFORE METEOR FINAL FANTASY XIV ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK is one Blu-ray, not an ordinary audio CD. Confirm that your equipment supports Blu-ray audio before ordering.
What does “Remake Original Soundtrack Plus” add?
It focuses on previously unreleased in-game background music, especially cutscene material. It is intended as a supplement to the standard seven-disc Remake soundtrack rather than a replacement for that set.
