Choose THE CRYSTAL EDITION for a compact tour of the numbered Final Fantasy series, not for a complete soundtrack. Square Enix’s announced selection has one track apiece from Final Fantasy I through XVI. The CD and two-LP Crystal Vinyl Edition list the same 16 selections and are scheduled for January 6, 2027, so as of October 30, 2026, both are forthcoming releases. For a much larger retrospective, consider the 30th Anniversary Tracks Blu-ray; for orchestral arrangements or deeper coverage of a particular game, the anniversary orchestral releases and dedicated game soundtracks are better fits.

What is the Crystal Edition, and is it a complete soundtrack?
It is a short, cross-series compilation: Square Enix announced one selection from each numbered mainline game, I through XVI, for a total of 16 tracks. It is not a complete soundtrack, and it is not a multi-track retrospective of every game.
The announced running order moves chronologically through the numbered series:

- Final Fantasy I — “Main Theme”
- Final Fantasy II — “The Rebel Army”
- Final Fantasy III — “Eternal Wind”
- Final Fantasy IV — “Theme of Love”
- Final Fantasy V — “Battle at the Big Bridge”
- Final Fantasy VI — “Searching for Friends”
- Final Fantasy VII — “One-Winged Angel”
- Final Fantasy VIII — “Force Your Way”
- Final Fantasy IX — “Not Alone”
- Final Fantasy X — “Zanarkand”
- Final Fantasy XI — “Ronfaure”
- Final Fantasy XII — “The Dalmasca Estersand”
- Final Fantasy XIII — “Blinded By Light”
- Final Fantasy XIV — “Torn from the Heavens”
- Final Fantasy XV — “Somnus (Instrumental Version)”
- Final Fantasy XVI — “Away”
That design makes the album useful as a sampler or a physical keepsake spanning the franchise’s numbered entries. It also means the selection cannot provide much breadth within any single game: if you want a longer sequence of music from Final Fantasy VII, XIV, or another one title, a dedicated soundtrack is the more relevant category.
Square Enix describes the songs as “16 of the best songs FINAL FANTASY has to offer.” That is the publisher’s promotional characterization, not an independent ranking or a claim that these are the definitive fan favorites. The product announcement calls the track list planned and warns that it may change, so the announced selections should not be treated as guaranteed final contents.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat the one-track-per-game format means
The sequence is deliberately representative rather than exhaustive. A buyer receives one named composition for each numbered mainline entry, including the online installments XI and XIV, but not several pieces from any one score. The list also stops at XVI because that is the announced endpoint; it is not a promise to cover every Final Fantasy-branded game, remake, spin-off, film, or expansion.
This distinction helps explain why Crystal can work as an introduction while still feeling limited to a longtime fan. Someone discovering the series can hear a chronological arc from “Main Theme” through “Away” without committing to dozens of discs. A listener who already knows a favorite game’s score will likely regard the single selection as an invitation to explore, not a replacement for that game’s soundtrack.
What is the difference between the Crystal CD and vinyl?
The announced music is the same; the choice is the physical format, packaging, and Japanese list price. The CD is one disc in a digipak, while the Crystal Vinyl Edition comprises two 12-inch LPs at 33⅓ rpm.
| Edition | Catalog number | Announced contents and packaging | Announced Japanese price |
|---|---|---|---|
| THE CRYSTAL EDITION | SQEX-11273 | One CD in digipak packaging; 16 planned selections | ¥3,960 including tax |
| THE CRYSTAL VINYL EDITION | SQEX-11271-2 | Two 12-inch LPs at 33⅓ rpm; same planned selections as the CD | ¥8,800 including tax |
Both editions are scheduled for January 6, 2027. These are announced Japanese prices, not verified U.S. prices, and they should not be converted into a presumed local retail price. Square Enix’s official product page links to its North American and European stores and to CDJapan, but regional listings, shipping, taxes, and stock need to be checked with the seller.

A format preference alone is not evidence of a sonic advantage.

Playback and space considerations
The CD needs a standard audio-CD player, compatible console, computer drive, or external disc drive. The LP set requires a turntable, a phono stage or phono input where applicable, an amplifier or powered speakers, and enough shelf space for two records and their jacket. Those practical requirements can outweigh the format’s collectability. Vinyl also requires handling and cleaning; the product listing establishes the disc size and speed, but not any special mastering or packaging feature that would justify a sound-quality claim.
Because the two Crystal formats are announced with matching selections, paying more for the vinyl buys the LP presentation rather than additional songs. Confirm the catalog number when shopping so that a listing for FINAL FANTASY 40th Anniversary THE CRYSTAL EDITION CD SQEX-11273 is not confused with the distinct two-LP title, catalog SQEX-11271-2.
How does Crystal compare with the 30th Anniversary Tracks collection?
The 30th Anniversary Tracks 1987-2017 collection is the stronger fit for breadth: Square Enix’s 2018 product page lists more than 100 tracks drawn from Final Fantasy I through XV, compared with Crystal’s 16 planned selections from I through XVI. Its Blu-ray Disc Music format also includes in-game footage.
Those differences matter more than the anniversary labels. Crystal offers a simple one-per-numbered-game path and includes a planned Final Fantasy XVI track. The 30th-anniversary set gives listeners a substantially larger set of selections and visuals, but its stated coverage ends at XV. It is not just the same album with more tracks: the scope and playback format differ.
Check your equipment before choosing the larger retrospective. It is a Blu-ray Disc Music product, not a CD or vinyl set. A buyer who wants a conventional CD, or who does not have a playback setup for Blu-ray Disc Music, should factor that requirement into the decision rather than assuming it will work like an audio CD.
The 30th set is therefore the better answer to “which anniversary collection has more songs?” More than 100 tracks is a substantially wider program than 16, while the inclusion of in-game footage adds a visual component absent from the Crystal specifications. That does not make it a substitute for Crystal’s planned XVI selection or for a dedicated score from any individual title.
Which official collections focus on orchestral music?
The 35th Anniversary Orchestral Compilation Vinyl and Distant Worlds IV are the relevant alternatives when the attraction is orchestral interpretation rather than a compact sequence of series selections. Their overlapping composition titles do not prove that they use the same recordings or arrangements as Crystal.

35th Anniversary Orchestral Compilation Vinyl
This two-LP release contains cross-series orchestral arrangements, with selections and medleys through Final Fantasy XV. Its published list includes “One-Winged Angel” and “Zanarkand,” compositions also represented in Crystal’s planned list. The distinction is the identified orchestral treatment: do not assume the vinyl’s versions are identical to the Crystal recordings just because the composition names overlap.
It is a good fit for a listener who values an anniversary presentation and LP artwork and wants arrangements that move between games. It is not a 16-track chronological survey, and its stated coverage does not extend to Crystal’s planned Final Fantasy XVI selection.
Distant Worlds IV: more music from FINAL FANTASY
Distant Worlds IV is a 15-track entry in Square Enix’s orchestral concert-album series. Its listed pieces include “Somnus (Instrumental Version)” and “Torn from the Heavens,” which also appear in Crystal’s planned selection. As with the anniversary orchestral vinyl, shared titles establish a shared composition, not a matching recording. Choose it for a concert-style program, not because the title list alone promises the same performances.
In other words, a shopper comparing “Somnus” or “Torn from the Heavens” should ask whether the desired experience is the composition itself or a particular orchestral performance. The published product details identify the titles and the series context, but they do not establish identical takes, mastering, or session personnel across releases.

A dedicated soundtrack is the better fit when one game matters more to you than a survey across the franchise. The Final Fantasy I Pixel Remaster Original Soundtrack CD provides a clear scale comparison: Square Enix’s 2026 listing has 33 tracks from Final Fantasy I Pixel Remaster, while Crystal plans one Final Fantasy I selection.
Keep the edition in view when comparing them. The dedicated CD concerns music from the Pixel Remaster; it should not be treated as interchangeable with every release or version of the original Final Fantasy I soundtrack. If the goal is a game-specific score, confirm that the named edition matches the music you want.
For Final Fantasy XIV, Square Enix lists a five-disc vinyl box with selections spanning A Realm Reborn through Endwalker. That is a multi-LP route into one game’s music, not a replacement for Crystal’s series-wide I–XVI survey. The checked Japanese Square Enix e-STORE listing was out of stock in October 2026; that status does not establish stock or availability in other regions.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The comparison illustrates two different kinds of depth. The Pixel Remaster CD concentrates 33 listed tracks on one game and one specific edition. The XIV box spreads selections over five LPs and several eras of that game, from A Realm Reborn through Endwalker. Neither tells you how many tracks Crystal will eventually contain beyond its announced 16, because Crystal’s concept is breadth across numbered entries rather than depth within one title.
Release timing, listings, and purchase checks
Both Crystal formats are scheduled for January 6, 2027, so a listing encountered during October 2026 is a preorder or announcement, not proof that the album is already available. The planned date applies to the CD and vinyl editions alike. Square Enix also cautions that the planned selections may change, making a final track-list check sensible near release.
Square Enix’s official page links its North American and European stores and CDJapan. Those links identify shopping destinations, but they do not establish a U.S. price, shipping charge, tax treatment, delivery date, or inventory level. The quoted ¥3,960 and ¥8,800 amounts include Japanese tax and should remain labeled as Japanese announced prices.
Square Enix also announced a limited Amazon.co.jp mega-jacket purchase bonus for either Crystal format. The applicable listing controls eligibility and supplies are limited. That notice does not verify Amazon.com stock, an American bonus, or an American preorder price, so buyers should not assume that a regional Amazon page offers the same package.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you choose between these collections?
Start with the listening goal, then check the format and local listing. The number of discs by itself does not tell you whether a release is the right one: these products differ in franchise coverage, track count, arrangement type, and playback needs.
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose Crystal CD if you want a short, chronological sampler across all 16 numbered mainline games and prefer CD.
- Choose Crystal Vinyl Edition if you want that same announced sampler on LP and already have a suitable turntable setup.
- Choose 30th Anniversary Tracks if breadth and in-game footage matter more than coverage of Final Fantasy XVI, and your playback setup supports Blu-ray Disc Music.
- Choose the 35th Anniversary Orchestral Compilation Vinyl or Distant Worlds IV if you want orchestral arrangements or a concert-album program rather than a strict one-track-per-game sequence.
- Choose a dedicated game soundtrack if you want more than a single selection from one title; check the named game edition before buying.
For a purchase, separate the format decision from the availability decision. The Crystal page links Square Enix’s North American and European stores and CDJapan; the announced yen amounts apply to Japan and do not verify U.S. prices. Square Enix also announced a limited Amazon.co.jp mega-jacket purchase bonus for either Crystal format, subject to the applicable listing and limited supplies. That announcement does not confirm Amazon.com stock, a U.S. bonus, or a U.S. preorder price.
A quick decision checklist
- Decide whether you want one representative track per numbered game or many tracks from one score.
- Decide whether original-score selections, orchestral arrangements, or concert programming is the priority.
- Confirm that you own the required player: CD, turntable, or Blu-ray Disc Music hardware.
- Check the edition name and catalog number, especially when comparing the CD with the two-LP Crystal release.
- Verify the regional price, taxes, shipping, release date, stock, and any bonus on the retailer’s own listing.
- If a particular song is essential, recheck the final track list because Square Enix says the announced Crystal selections may change.
What is the best fit overall?
Crystal is the focused choice for a compact I–XVI survey, with the CD and vinyl editions offering the same announced track selection in different formats. For substantially more tracks, the 30th-anniversary Blu-ray is the closer match; for orchestral interpretations, look to the two orchestral collections; for depth in one game, choose a dedicated soundtrack. These are differences in content and presentation, not verdicts based on a listening test.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Crystal Edition include a digital download code?
The Square Enix product details cited for the CD and vinyl describe physical editions and do not specify a download code. Check the exact retailer listing before ordering if a digital copy is important to you.
Can I play the 30th Anniversary Tracks Blu-ray in a CD player?
No: it is listed as Blu-ray Disc Music, a different disc format from an audio CD. Confirm that your intended playback device supports Blu-ray Disc Music rather than relying on standard CD compatibility.
Is the Crystal Edition track list final?
Square Enix labels the selections planned and says they may change. Recheck the official product listing closer to the scheduled release if a particular track is the deciding factor.
Does Amazon.co.jp’s Crystal bonus apply to Amazon.com?
No such U.S. offer is established by Square Enix’s announcement. It describes a limited mega-jacket bonus through the applicable Amazon.co.jp listing, with supplies limited.
When do the Crystal CD and vinyl editions release?
Both are scheduled for January 6, 2027. As of October 30, 2026, they are forthcoming rather than already released albums.
Do the CD and vinyl contain different songs?

Which collection has more songs, Crystal or 30th Anniversary Tracks?
The 30th Anniversary Tracks 1987-2017 collection lists more than 100 tracks, while Crystal lists 16 planned selections. The 30th set also uses Blu-ray Disc Music and includes in-game footage.
Is the Final Fantasy XIV five-LP box a complete XIV soundtrack?
The listing describes selections spanning A Realm Reborn through Endwalker, not a claim that every XIV track is included. It is a game-focused multi-LP collection, unlike Crystal’s one-selection-per-numbered-game format.
Is the Japanese price the price I will pay locally?
No. ¥3,960 for the CD and ¥8,800 for the vinyl are announced Japanese prices including tax. Regional prices, shipping, taxes, and availability must be confirmed with the seller.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Crystal is a forthcoming 16-track I–XVI sampler. Buy the CD for compactness, the two-LP edition for the same announced program on vinyl, the 30th Anniversary Blu-ray for breadth and footage, an orchestral release for concert arrangements, or a dedicated game soundtrack for depth.
