For a large Steam library, start with capacity and the USB port on the device you’ll connect—not the biggest speed number on a box. The Samsung T7 Shield 4TB is a documented rugged choice for a 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 host; the Crucial X9 4TB is a straightforward alternative to price-check. If your computer has USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, compare the ADATA SD810 4TB and Samsung T9 4TB. For 8TB, decide whether portability or desk-bound capacity matters more. None of the cited figures establishes a universal game-loading winner.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Checked
Samsung T7 Shield 4TB Rugged 4TB storage on a 10Gbps host Samsung rates it up to 1,050MB/s read and 1,000MB/s write; IP65 Nov 2026
Crucial X9 4TB A straightforward 4TB value candidate 4TB configuration; PC Gamer tested the 2TB model Nov 2026
ADATA SD810 4TB 20Gbps-capable hosts and large transfers 4TB configuration; PC Gamer’s cited review tested 1TB Nov 2026
Samsung T9 4TB 20Gbps-capable hosts Samsung rates it up to 2,000MB/s read and write Nov 2026
Samsung T5 EVO 8TB Portable capacity first 8TB configuration; 460MB/s stated read/write rating Nov 2026
SanDisk Desk Drive 8TB Stationary, high-capacity storage 8TB configuration; requires an external power brick Nov 2026
SanDisk Extreme PRO USB4 4TB A USB4 host-and-cable setup 4TB configuration; top speeds involve write-caching considerations Nov 2026

These are conditional fits, not a claim that one drive loads every game fastest. Manufacturer speed ratings and transfer-test results are not Steam loading-time benchmarks.

How should I choose an external SSD for Steam?

Choose the capacity you need, confirm the host port can use the drive’s interface, then weigh portability and durability. A faster-rated SSD can still be limited by the computer, console, cable, or hub connected to it.

Estimate capacity from the games you keep installed

Think about the titles you want available at the same time, rather than how many games you own in Steam. Game sizes vary, and the cited sources establish no universal number of games per terabyte or minimum free-space rule. Leave practical room for updates and other files instead of planning to fill the drive completely. If 4TB does not comfortably cover that installed set, the 8TB options below offer a different trade-off.

A useful way to make the estimate is to list the games you actually revisit, note their current install sizes, and total them. Then consider whether you routinely rotate in new large games or keep several releases installed for other players in the household. This is a planning exercise rather than a promise about how many titles any capacity will hold: updates and additional files change the amount of usable room, and no fixed games-per-terabyte figure applies to every library.

Match the drive to the host port

A 20Gbps-class SSD does not make a 10Gbps host run at 20Gbps. Samsung’s Portable SSD Installation Guide says performance may vary with the connected system. The Steam Deck OLED’s listed external connectivity is USB 3 Gen 2, not USB 3.2 Gen 2×2; that makes a 20Gbps drive’s maximum interface speed unavailable through that connection. USB4 is a separate special case: it is worth considering only when the host and cable support the relevant connection.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Check the connection you will actually use, not just the connector’s shape. USB-C describes a connector, while the interface supported by the host, cable, and any hub determines which connection speed is available. If a drive will be plugged into multiple devices, its practical performance can differ between them. Samsung’s guide puts the point plainly: “Performance may vary depending on the user’s system to which Portable SSD is connected.” The manufacturer does not give a single speed that applies to every host and setup.

Decide whether you will carry the drive

For a drive that travels with a laptop or handheld, size, ruggedness, and cable convenience matter alongside capacity. Samsung identifies the T7 Shield as IP65 dust- and water-resistant. The SanDisk Desk Drive is different in kind: PC Gamer lists a power brick, so it belongs on a desk rather than in the same pocket-drive category.

Ruggedness and speed are separate decision points. The T7 Shield’s IP65 identification is useful if you expect to carry a drive, but it does not turn the published transfer rates into game-loading figures. Likewise, a desk unit’s larger capacity or sustained-transfer behavior does not make it a good travel drive if its external power supply conflicts with how you plan to use it.

Which 4TB external SSDs are worth comparing?

For 4TB, the practical split is between a conventional 10Gbps connection and a genuine 20Gbps host. The published specifications describe transfer capability, not how many seconds a particular Steam game takes to load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you have a 10Gbps-class host, compare the T7 Shield and X9 on the features and delivered price for the exact 4TB configuration. If you have a real USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 port and regularly move large files, compare the SD810 and T9 as well. The higher interface class matters only if the entire connection can use it; otherwise, it is not a reason by itself to pay more.

Samsung T7 Shield 4TB: a rugged 10Gbps choice

Samsung’s US listing gives the 4TB T7 Shield a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface and manufacturer-rated maximums of up to 1,050MB/s read and 1,000MB/s write. Samsung’s support comparison identifies IP65 dust and water resistance. Those details make it a documented option for someone who expects to carry the drive; the ratings are not measured gaming results. See Samsung’s US T7 Shield 4TB listing and its portable SSD comparison.

Crucial X9 4TB: a value candidate to price-check

PC Gamer lists 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB X9 configurations and describes the model as its budget gaming option. Its cited hands-on work used the 2TB version, so do not treat that sample’s exact result as a test of the 4TB configuration. The 4TB X9 is a candidate to compare against the T7 Shield on current delivered price and the durability features you need—not a verified cheapest option.

“Value candidate” here means a model worth including in a price comparison, not a price verdict. Compare the exact capacity, seller, shipping, and availability at the time you buy. A lower price for another capacity, or a review’s budget label, does not establish which 4TB drive currently costs less after delivery.

ADATA SD810 4TB and Samsung T9 4TB: for a compatible 20Gbps host

The SD810 range includes a 4TB configuration, while the PC Gamer review cited here tested the 1TB model. In that publisher’s 2024 test, the 1TB sample transferred approximately 260GB at about 1,750MB/s over 2 minutes 30 seconds before its write cache was exhausted. That is a sample-specific transfer result, not a 4TB result or a game-loading time.

Samsung lists a 4TB T9 configuration and rates the drive for up to 2,000MB/s read and write under suitable conditions. Its 20Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface makes the rating most relevant when the host and connection can support that interface. Samsung’s 2026 catalog figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent game benchmarks. See the Samsung T9 listing.

The SD810 test illustrates why sustained transfers and short advertised peaks should not be collapsed into one number: PC Gamer reported the 1TB sample’s performance before its write cache was exhausted, then described a large continuous transfer. That result is useful context if you often copy very large files, but game installs and launches are not the same test. It also should not be carried over as a guaranteed result for the SD810 4TB.

SanDisk Extreme PRO USB4 4TB: a niche interface match

PC Gamer lists a 4TB USB4 version. It is a conditional option for a compatible USB4 setup, not the default recommendation for an ordinary USB-C port or Steam Deck. PC Gamer also cautions that reaching its top speeds involves write-caching considerations. The word “USB-C” by itself does not establish that a port, cable, or hub supports USB4.

What are the 8TB options, and what do you give up?

The 8TB choices serve different setups. The T5 EVO is the portable, lower-rated option; the Desk Drive is stationary and separately powered. Choose based on where the library will live and how often you expect to move large files.

Samsung T5 EVO 8TB: portable capacity with a lower speed rating

Samsung’s US listing offers an 8TB T5 EVO configuration and gives the model a stated 460MB/s read/write rating. That is a capacity-first trade-off against the higher manufacturer-rated transfer ceilings of the 4TB models above. The figure is a model rating, not a promised Steam loading speed. Samsung’s page may initially display a smaller capacity selection, so confirm the selected configuration before purchase. See the Samsung T5 EVO listing.

This makes the T5 EVO a distinct choice rather than a faster version of the 4TB shortlist: it prioritizes an 8TB portable configuration, while its stated transfer rating is lower. If your priority is one large library you can carry, that capacity may be more relevant than a top-line speed figure. If you move large batches of data frequently, compare the speed trade-off with your workflow before choosing it.

SanDisk Desk Drive 8TB: keep it at a desk

PC Gamer lists the Desk Drive in 4TB and 8TB configurations and notes that it needs an external power brick. In a 2026-updated comparison, PC Gamer reported its own IOMeter result of 930–935MB/s during a 30-minute run transferring more than 1.6TB. That sustained-transfer result describes the publisher’s test, not a Steam game load or a guaranteed result for every setup. The separate power requirement makes this a poor substitute for a pocketable portable SSD.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider it when the library will remain near a desk and you prefer the listed 8TB capacity over a self-powered pocket drive. Its IOMeter result is a specific long-run transfer measurement, not a promise that installs, updates, or launches will perform at the same rate. The key comparison with the T5 EVO is therefore not only the quoted MB/s: it is a stationary, separately powered design versus a portable capacity-first option.

How do I add an external drive as a Steam install location?

Connect and prepare the drive, then add it through Steam’s Storage settings. Bethesda Support documents the route and notes that the selected drive should appear as a secondary option; this setup procedure does not establish that unplugging or moving the same library between operating systems will always work without issues.

  1. Connect the SSD to the computer. Use a data-capable cable and a direct compatible port where possible. A port or cable with a lower interface capability can limit transfer speed.
  2. Check whether the operating system can use the drive. If it is new, follow the operating system’s disk setup prompts. Samsung’s guide notes that some operating systems may require reformatting; formatting can affect existing data, so check the drive’s contents and back up anything you need before proceeding.
  3. Open Steam’s Storage settings. In the Steam desktop client, choose Steam > Settings > Storage.
  4. Add the drive. Choose Add Drive, select the external SSD, and confirm the new library location. Bethesda Support documents this sequence in its guide to adding an additional Steam installation drive.
  5. Choose that location for installs. When installing a game, select the external library location if Steam offers more than one. For existing installs, use Steam’s storage management controls rather than assuming that copying folders alone registers the game.

Bethesda Support’s instructions say: “The selected drive should now show up in the Storage Settings menu as a secondary option.” Once added, Steam can use the location for installs. This is a setup instruction, not a guarantee that an unplugged drive will remain available or that a library can be moved unchanged among different operating systems.

  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Transfer files and from your laptop at speeds up to 10 Gbps with USB A 3.2 port. Extra 2 USB A 2.0 ports are perfectly for your keyboards and mouse.

Why do advertised SSD speeds not predict game-loading times?

Sequential read and write ratings describe a type of data transfer under suitable conditions; they are not a measurement of a particular game starting, loading a level, or compiling shaders. PC Gamer explicitly distinguishes transfer testing from gaming benchmarks in its external SSD comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Real use also depends on the host interface, the game, its data-access pattern, and the conditions of a particular test. Even the SD810’s cited cache-exhaustion result refers to a 1TB sample moving a large continuous transfer—not a Steam workload. The Desk Drive’s long-run IOMeter figure is likewise a transfer test. Neither establishes that one model is the universal fastest for games.

Use advertised rates to compare interface classes and transfer-oriented work, especially if you regularly move large game files. For game loading, treat them as context rather than a promised time saving. The available cited evidence does not support a universal percentage improvement or a single loading-time winner.

Keep the kind of evidence attached to the number when comparing products. Samsung’s up-to rates are manufacturer specifications verified in its 2026 catalog; PC Gamer’s SD810 and Desk Drive figures belong to that publisher’s particular tests, capacities, and conditions. None is a controlled side-by-side Steam loading benchmark for all the listed models. A bigger MB/s figure can help identify a higher-rated transfer class, but it cannot tell you how many seconds a specific game will save on your setup.

What should I check before buying?

Use this checklist to avoid paying for an interface you cannot use or choosing capacity that does not fit how you manage your library.

  • Capacity: List the games you intend to keep installed together and leave practical space for updates. No universal game count per terabyte is established.
  • Host interface: Identify the actual USB capability of the computer or handheld, not just the shape of its USB-C port. A 20Gbps or USB4 drive cannot deliver its interface maximum through a slower connection.
  • Cable and hub: Check that any cable or hub supports the drive’s intended data interface. A faster replacement cable is relevant only if the existing cable is limiting the connection and the host supports the higher rate.
  • Portability and protection: A rugged portable drive and a powered desk unit solve different problems. Consider whether the drive will travel, remain connected, or need its own power supply.
  • Exact capacity tested: A review of one capacity does not automatically describe every capacity in a product family. The X9 and SD810 test examples cited above used smaller capacities than the 4TB configurations listed.
  • Current price and stock: Compare delivered prices and availability for the exact capacity and model before deciding which is a value. The cited sources do not establish current comparable US delivered prices or stock.
  • Operating-system use: Confirm the format and library setup needed for your device. Samsung’s guide notes some operating systems may require reformatting; the available setup instructions do not promise that a single installed library can move unchanged among Windows, macOS, and SteamOS.

A replacement USB-C cable is not a default upgrade. It is worth considering only if the current cable is limiting the data connection and the host itself supports a faster interface. Check that the replacement is rated for data at the speed you intend to use; a connector that fits does not on its own establish the cable’s data capability.

How were these options selected?

The shortlist prioritizes 4TB and 8TB configurations relevant to a large installed library, then separates choices by host interface, portability, and ruggedness. It uses manufacturer specifications for ratings and capacities, and attributes published transfer results to PC Gamer with the tested model and conditions. No current price winner or universal game-loading result is asserted because the cited material does not establish either.

That approach favors a decision that can be checked against your setup: choose a 10Gbps-class 4TB option for a compatible ordinary host, consider 20Gbps models when the host genuinely supports Gen 2×2 and transfers matter, and choose between the two 8TB approaches based on whether the drive must travel or can stay powered at a desk. The SanDisk Extreme PRO USB4 is deliberately a special case rather than the default for every USB-C device.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Steam games fit on a 4TB external SSD?

There is no dependable fixed count: installed game sizes vary widely, and the cited sources do not establish a games-per-terabyte average. Add the installed sizes of the titles you plan to keep together, then leave room for updates and other files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will my Steam library stay on the external SSD if I disconnect it?

Steam’s documented add-drive procedure does not guarantee what will happen to a library when its drive is disconnected. Treat the games on it as unavailable until the SSD is reconnected, and avoid interrupting an active install, update, or game session.

Can I use the same external SSD library on Windows, macOS, and SteamOS?

Do not assume one unchanged Steam library will work across all three systems. Samsung’s installation guide says some operating systems may require reformatting, and the cited setup guidance does not establish cross-platform compatibility for a shared library.

Should I buy a faster SSD just to make games load faster?

Not on the basis of the advertised sequential rate alone. The cited figures are manufacturer ratings or transfer tests, not controlled comparisons of Steam loading times across these models.

Can I run games from an external SSD on a Steam Deck?

The Steam Deck OLED’s listed external connectivity is USB 3 Gen 2, not USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, so a 20Gbps drive cannot reach its Gen 2×2 maximum through that connection. The setup details here do not establish that every external-drive library configuration will work trouble-free, so check the device and Steam setup you plan to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a USB-C port enough for a USB4 or 20Gbps SSD?

No. USB-C identifies the connector shape, not the supported data interface. Check the host, cable, and any hub; a slower link will limit the drive, and the Steam Deck OLED is listed with USB 3 Gen 2 connectivity rather than Gen 2×2.

Is the Crucial X9 4TB the cheapest option?

That is not established. PC Gamer calls the X9 a budget gaming option and lists a 4TB configuration, but current comparable US delivered prices and stock were not verified. Compare the exact capacity and total delivered price with alternatives before deciding.

Which 8TB SSD is better: the T5 EVO or SanDisk Desk Drive?

They suit different setups. Samsung lists the T5 EVO 8TB as a portable option with a 460MB/s stated read/write rating. PC Gamer lists the Desk Drive 8TB with an external power brick, making it a stationary choice rather than a pocketable alternative.

The Bottom Line

For a rugged 4TB drive on a 10Gbps host, start with the Samsung T7 Shield; price-check the Crucial X9 as another 4TB candidate. Consider the ADATA SD810 or Samsung T9 only when your host genuinely supports USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. For 8TB, choose the portable, 460MB/s-rated T5 EVO or the externally powered SanDisk Desk Drive based on where the library will live. Check the exact capacity, connection, and delivered price, and treat speed ratings as transfer context—not a promise of game-loading times.
