In the same-card comparison, modern-screenshot was the most dependable overall. It rendered the tested gradients, blur, shadow, inline SVG, web font and cover image in the first capture. html-to-image matched the modern CSS effects but exposed a web-font embedding problem and, in the tested WebKit build, omitted the cover image on its first call. html2canvas completed quickly but missed several effects, including the conic gradient, backdrop blur, drop shadow and gradient text. Those findings apply to one 760 × 420 card, html2canvas 1.4.1, html-to-image 1.11.13, modern-screenshot 4.7.0, Playwright Chromium 153 and WebKit 26.6—not to every component, browser or future release.
What did the same-card test actually compare?
The test modeled a real “download as image” or share-card requirement rather than a plain box. The 760 × 420 year-in-review card contained several features that commonly expose differences between DOM-to-image libraries:

Each library was called using its documented one-line capture approach. The output was compared with a server-rendered version, and the comparison recorded visual fidelity, asset failures and elapsed time. The result is a useful compatibility snapshot, not a universal benchmark: a simpler card, a different browser engine, another font-loading sequence or a later package version can change the outcome.
Which library produced the most faithful image?
For this card, modern-screenshot produced the strongest first-pass result. html-to-image also reproduced the modern CSS effects, while html2canvas left visible gaps.

| Library and version | Gradient text | Conic gradient | Backdrop blur | Drop shadow | Cover image | Overall result in this test |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| html2canvas 1.4.1 | Rendered as a solid bar | Missed | Missed | Missed | Omitted when the host lacked CORS | Completed, but with several visual omissions |
| html-to-image 1.11.13 | Rendered | Rendered | Rendered | Rendered | Rejected the capture without usable CORS; first WebKit call also lacked the image | High visual fidelity when resources were available |
| modern-screenshot 4.7.0 | Rendered | Rendered | Rendered | Rendered | Used a transparent one-pixel substitute without usable CORS; present on the first WebKit call in this test | Most dependable behavior on the tested card |
“Most dependable” means the fewest surprises across the tested effects and resource conditions. It does not mean modern-screenshot is guaranteed to win on your page. Compare pixels from your own component in every browser you support before making a switch.
How does html2canvas render a DOM element?
html2canvas walks the DOM, reads computed styles and repaints the properties it implements onto a canvas. It does not take a photograph of the browser’s actual pixels; it reconstructs an image from DOM information. Consequently, a CSS feature appears only when the library has an implementation for that feature.
Why that matters for modern CSS
On the test card, the reconstruction model could not reproduce the conic-gradient chart, backdrop filter or drop shadow, and it converted gradient text into a solid bar. A successful promise therefore did not mean a faithful result. The resulting PNG existed, but important visual information was absent.
Where html2canvas still fits
It can be a practical choice for conventional layouts built from well-supported backgrounds, borders, text and images. The reported Chromium timing was 0.7–0.9 seconds for this card. Treat that range as a measurement of this component and environment, not a package-wide speed claim.
How do html-to-image and modern-screenshot use a different rendering path?
Both libraries, as described in the comparison, clone the selected node, copy computed styles, embed resources and place the clone in an SVG foreignObject. The browser then paints that embedded HTML, so the path can inherit the browser’s CSS renderer instead of reimplementing every property.

The fidelity advantage
That approach rendered the card’s gradient text, conic chart, backdrop blur and shadow in the test. It is especially attractive when the component uses effects that are difficult to reproduce manually on a canvas.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The resource-serialization cost
The clone must serialize stylesheets, fonts and images into a self-contained representation. If a stylesheet or image cannot be read because of origin policy, the capture can fail, omit the resource or insert a substitute. The browser’s normal on-screen rendering may look perfect while the exported image is incomplete.
The comparison did not verify official documentation for html-to-image or modern-screenshot, so their internal details and future behavior should be checked against the versions you install.
What happened to Google Fonts?
The foreignObject-based libraries needed to read the linked font stylesheet so they could embed the font in the exported image. In this test, the font problem was fixed either by adding crossorigin="anonymous" to the stylesheet link or by self-hosting the font files.
html2canvas used the fonts that were already loaded by the page in the reported run, so it did not show the same embedding failure. That difference does not remove the need to wait for fonts before capturing: an export made while fallback text is still displayed can preserve the fallback face.

A safer font setup
- Serve the font stylesheet and font files from an origin that permits the browser request.
- Use
crossorigin="anonymous"on a cross-origin stylesheet link when the server supplies the corresponding CORS headers, or self-host the files. - Trigger the capture only after the page has finished loading the intended face; verify the exported pixels rather than relying on a resolved promise.
How do cross-origin images change the result?
An image can be visible in the browser yet unavailable to a client-side exporter. The image host must send headers that permit the requesting page to read the resource. Without that permission, the three libraries behaved differently on the same cover image:
| Condition in the test | html2canvas | html-to-image | modern-screenshot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Image host supplied no usable CORS headers | Skipped the image and completed | Rejected the capture | Inserted a transparent one-pixel substitute |
These are observed outcomes from the stated versions, not guarantees. A missing image can be more damaging than a rejected promise because an automated workflow may treat the completed file as valid.
html2canvas’s documented CORS setup
The html2canvas FAQ explains that browser cross-origin restrictions still apply. Its documented image setup uses both the library’s useCORS option and a crossorigin="anonymous" attribute on the image, provided the image host actually sends compatible CORS headers. Setting useCORS alone cannot grant access that the server has not authorized.
Practical ways to make the image readable
- Configure the image host to return a narrowly scoped
Access-Control-Allow-Originvalue appropriate for your application. - Serve the asset through an approved same-origin path when changing the original host is impossible.
- Capture a diagnostic card containing a known image and inspect the output file, not only the JavaScript error state.
Why did the first WebKit capture differ?
In Playwright WebKit 26.6, html-to-image’s first capture lacked the cover photo, while a second capture included it. modern-screenshot included the photo on its first call in that run. The difference points to resource-readiness and serialization timing, but it should be retested with your supported WebKit version and production assets before it becomes a product rule.

How to test for a first-call race
- Start a fresh browser context and page for each trial.
- Load the card and wait for the same application state your users see.
- Capture once, then capture again without changing the DOM.
- Repeat in Chromium and WebKit, recording whether each asset is present in both files.
If only the first file is wrong, add an explicit readiness gate in the application and keep the regression test. Do not hide the issue by silently discarding the first result unless you have measured the added latency and confirmed that a second call is safe.

Which library was fastest in Chromium?
The comparison measured the following times for the 760 × 420 card in Playwright Chromium 153:
| Library | Measured time in this run | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| html2canvas 1.4.1 | 0.7–0.9 seconds | Card- and environment-specific measurement |
| html-to-image 1.11.13 | 1.3 seconds on the first call; 0.05 seconds on the next | Large first/second-call difference observed for this card |
| modern-screenshot 4.7.0 | 0.6–0.7 seconds | Card- and environment-specific measurement |
These numbers are not a general benchmark. Image dimensions, font count, SVG complexity, browser version, device speed and cache state can all move the result. Measure cold and warm captures separately if your interface must feel instant, and include the slowest supported browser in the acceptance test.
How should you choose a library for a real component?
Choose from the properties your card actually uses, not from a package’s ability to return a PNG in a demo.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose html2canvas when
- Your design uses mostly conventional CSS that the library supports.
- Skipping an inaccessible image is preferable to rejecting the whole capture.
- You want a browser-only implementation and can accept reconstructed rather than pixel-identical output.
Choose a foreignObject-based library when
- Fidelity for filters, gradients, shadows or inline SVG matters more than graceful handling of unreadable assets.
- You can make font stylesheets and images readable to the page that performs the capture.
- You will test first-call behavior in every browser engine you support.
Use a server-side browser renderer when
- Every user must receive consistent output.
- Captures run without an open user browser, such as scheduled reports or a queue worker.
- Image hosts cannot be made accessible to client-side code.
The comparison recommends server-side browser rendering for those situations. A server-rendered page still needs an asset strategy, but it moves the capture into a controlled browser environment rather than depending on each user’s origin permissions and cache state.

- Freeze the fixture. Use a representative card with the real fonts, image hosts, SVGs, filters and gradients.
- Record the matrix. Pin library versions and test each supported Chromium, WebKit and other browser engine.
- Test resource states. Include warm cache, cold cache, slow image delivery, blocked CORS and a font that has not finished loading.
- Inspect pixels. Check text faces, image presence, transparency, blur, shadows, chart wedges and rotation—not just whether the promise resolves.
- Measure both calls. Record first and subsequent captures because the comparison found a substantial first-call difference for html-to-image.
- Define failure policy. Decide whether a missing image should produce an explicit error, a placeholder or a completed file with a warning.
- Keep a browser regression test. Re-run it when upgrading a library or browser because these implementations depend on browser APIs and CSS behavior.
What are the main limitations of this comparison?
The evidence covers one card, three pinned library versions and two Playwright browser environments. It does not establish a universal ranking, a download-count statistic or a performance figure for other components. The test also reports behavior rather than a formal conformance score for every CSS property.
html2canvas’s own documentation describes it as browser-based and dependent on browser APIs; it is not suitable for Node.js by itself. If your automation has no open browser, plan for a server-side browser-rendering architecture instead of assuming a client-side package can run unchanged in a Node process.
What is the practical verdict?
Prototype with modern-screenshot first when your card resembles the tested design and you need high-fidelity modern CSS with a dependable first capture. Keep html-to-image in consideration if its output matches your component and you can solve font access and verify first-call image behavior. Use html2canvas for simpler, conventional layouts or when its omission-on-CORS behavior is preferable to a rejected export.
Whichever path you take, make CORS and font loading explicit, test the real browsers and inspect the image itself. A capture that resolves is not necessarily a capture your users can share.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can these libraries capture an entire page or only one card?
The comparison exercised a selected 760 × 420 element. Expanding the target to a full page increases the number of styles, fonts, images and browser features that must be serialized, so validate full-page output separately rather than extrapolating from the card.
How can I tell whether a bad export is a CSS problem or an asset-access problem?
Capture a version of the component with local placeholder images and system fonts. If the CSS effects return, investigate stylesheet and image CORS; if they remain missing, the property may not be implemented by the chosen renderer or supported by that browser.

Only after identifying the failure class. A retry can help with a resource-readiness race, but it will not create permission for a cross-origin image; surface a useful error or use an approved same-origin asset path in that case.
What should a regression test compare after a package upgrade?
Store representative output files and compare the regions most likely to change: font metrics, gradients, blur edges, SVG strokes, shadows and image transparency. Run the fixture in each supported browser engine, including a cold-load case.
