PlayStation PULSE Explore earbuds officially work with PS5, PlayStation Portal, PC, Mac, and Bluetooth phones and tablets. They are not officially listed for PS4 or Nintendo Switch, although reviewers report that the included PlayStation Link USB adapter can connect to both. Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S are a no: the earbuds have no headphone jack, and their PlayStation Link adapter is not an Xbox audio connection.
For games, use PlayStation Link rather than Bluetooth; Bluetooth is intended for mobile audio and has higher latency. The key distinction is that PULSE Explore has two separate wireless connections—PlayStation Link and Bluetooth—with different device support.

What connection do PULSE Explore earbuds use?
PULSE Explore is Sony’s true-wireless gaming earbud model, identified in PlayStation specifications as CFI-ZWE1 or CFI-ZWE1EC. It has two wireless radios: PlayStation Link for compatible gaming devices and Bluetooth for phones and tablets. Those are not interchangeable ways to connect to every platform.
PlayStation Link is Sony’s proprietary connection, designed for low-latency, lossless audio. The included USB-A adapter is pre-paired with the earbuds and connects to supported PS5 consoles, PCs, and Macs. PlayStation Portal has PlayStation Link built in, so it connects directly without the adapter. Bluetooth is useful for mobile listening, but reviewers caution against using it for games because of its higher latency.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The earbuds use planar magnetic drivers and have two hidden microphones with AI-enhanced noise rejection. That noise rejection applies to the microphones’ outgoing voice pickup; it does not mean the earbuds have active noise cancelling (ANC) for the wearer.
Do PlayStation wireless earbuds work with PS4?
Not officially according to Sony’s published compatibility information, but two reviewers report that the included PlayStation Link adapter works on PS4 for both audio and microphone.
RTINGS’ compatibility results list audio and microphone support on PS4 through non-Bluetooth wireless, and its review says the earbuds have full audio and mic compatibility with PS4 and PS5 using the transmitter. Trusted Reviews also describes using the Link dongle to connect to PS4. Sony’s product and support pages, however, name PS5, Portal, PC, Mac, and mobile devices—not PS4. TechRadar’s PULSE Explore platform list also omits PS4.
That makes PS4 a reviewer-supported workaround, not a Sony-guaranteed feature. If you try it, connect the included adapter to the console’s USB-A port and select the earbuds as the audio device if necessary. Do not assume that Sony support or future firmware updates will preserve a connection that Sony does not list.
Do PULSE Explore work with Xbox or Xbox Series X?
No. PULSE Explore is not a practical Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S headset: it has no 3.5 mm audio cable, and the PlayStation Link adapter does not provide an Xbox-compatible wireless connection.
RTINGS’ compatibility results mark analog, wired USB, and non-Bluetooth wireless audio as unavailable for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Connecting Bluetooth earbuds directly is not a supported Xbox console audio route for this product. In particular, the Xbox controller’s headphone socket cannot help because there is no wired connection to plug into it.

If Xbox support is essential, choose a headset that explicitly lists your Xbox model and connection type. A wired 3.5 mm headset is one possible cross-platform route; confirm that the specific headset supports Xbox chat as well as game audio before buying.
Do PULSE Explore work with Nintendo Switch?
Sony does not list Switch as a compatible platform. CNET’s David Carnoy reported using the PlayStation Link adapter with a Nintendo Switch, with a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter to connect the dongle. Treat that as an individual editorial report, not official or guaranteed compatibility.
There is no confirmation here that this specific earbud model pairs to Switch through Bluetooth. Nor does Sony’s published support information promise that the USB adapter will work with every Switch model or software configuration. If you try the reported setup, the connection path is the PlayStation Link dongle plugged into the console through the extra adapter—not a confirmed Bluetooth pairing.
If Switch is a must-have, compare products that explicitly list it. TechRadar’s platform comparison lists Sony INZONE Buds for PS5, PS4, PC, Switch, and mobile, and the wired SteelSeries Tusq for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, PC, and mobile. Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility details for the exact console and chat features you need.

Yes. Sony officially supports Bluetooth connections to mobile phones and tablets, and SoundGuys confirms iPhone and Android compatibility. The earbuds support AAC and SBC audio codecs; SoundGuys reports Bluetooth 5.3. Bluetooth is suitable for calls and music, but it is not the recommended connection for gaming.
To pair with a phone, turn on Bluetooth, place both earbuds in their charging case, and press and hold the PS Link button on the case for about eight seconds, until the indicator flashes blue quickly. Select PULSE Explore in the phone’s Bluetooth menu. A solid blue indicator means pairing is complete.

The earbuds can pair with up to 10 Bluetooth devices, but they connect to and play audio from only one Bluetooth device at a time. The volume buttons on the earbuds do not control Bluetooth volume; adjust it on the phone. CNET also reports that its iPhone 15 and Google Pixel 7 checks found no track-skip controls and no working onboard Bluetooth volume control, so the mobile controls are more limited than a typical phone-first earbud feature set.
Can I take a phone call while playing on PS5?
Yes. Sony supports simultaneous PlayStation Link and Bluetooth audio, so you can keep game audio active while taking a phone call or listening to phone audio. Sony says the Bluetooth connection does not affect PlayStation Link audio latency.

There is an important control limitation: the earbuds’ volume rocker changes PlayStation Link volume only. When Bluetooth is connected, change the phone’s volume on the phone itself. The two connections also have separate purposes: PlayStation Link carries the game audio, while Bluetooth carries the mobile audio.
Do they work with PlayStation Portal without the dongle?
Yes. PlayStation Portal has PlayStation Link built in, so the earbuds connect directly; you do not need to plug in the included USB adapter. Take the earbuds out of their case near the powered Portal and connect them using PlayStation Link.
The same Bluetooth phone feature can be useful with Portal: Sony’s simultaneous-connection function lets you keep PlayStation Link audio active while receiving phone calls or mobile audio. This direct Portal connection is different from using the adapter with a PS5, PC, or Mac.
Do PULSE Explore work with PS5 Slim?
They work with a PS5 that has a USB-A port, because that is how the included PlayStation Link adapter connects. Sony lists PS5 consoles as compatible; the adapter’s port—not the console’s “Slim” name—is the relevant check.

Confirm that the particular console has an available USB-A port before setup. On supported PS5 games, the earbuds can use 3D Audio, and Sony’s console provides sound customization options. The included adapter is also useful if you move between PS5 and a computer, though one adapter can play from only one connected device at a time.
How do I connect them to PS5, PC, or Mac?
Use PlayStation Link, not Bluetooth, for game audio. The adapter comes pre-paired, and its LED turns solid white when it has connected to the earbuds.
- Plug the included PlayStation Link USB-A adapter into a USB-A port on the PS5, PC, or Mac.
- Take the earbuds out of their charging case and wait for the adapter’s LED to turn solid white.
- On Windows, install the PlayStation Link PC Driver from the tray icon if prompted or needed. If there is no sound, open the system audio settings and select PlayStation Link Adapter as the output device.
- For a phone call or mobile audio at the same time, pair the phone over Bluetooth separately; keep the PlayStation Link connection active for the game.
PlayStation Link pairing has its own limit: the earbuds can pair with up to eight PlayStation Link USB adapters, but play from only one adapter at a time. One adapter can pair with up to eight PlayStation Link devices. A household that regularly switches between a PS5 and a computer can leave an adapter in each machine; PlayStation Direct lists an additional adapter at $24.00.

Sony’s product specification lists up to five hours of battery life from the earbuds and up to 10 additional hours through the charging case. CNET notes that Sony’s five-hour figure is at moderate volume, so actual listening time depends on use.

There is no ANC. Sony’s AI-enhanced noise rejection is a microphone feature for reducing background noise in your transmitted voice, not a feature that silences surrounding sound for you. Reports on microphone quality differ by use case: RTINGS describes game-chat recording as sub-par and sometimes distorted, while CNET reports very good voice-call performance in noisy street conditions. Those assessments concern different types of calls and should not be treated as the same test.
Bluetooth is less suited to gaming because of latency. RTINGS’ 2024 test-table result lists 265 ms of latency for Bluetooth SBC, and SoundGuys likewise says Bluetooth is not recommended for gaming because it has higher latency. For game audio on supported devices, use PlayStation Link instead.

What should you buy if you need more platforms?
PULSE Explore makes the most sense when your main setup is PS5 or Portal, with PC, Mac, or a phone as additional devices. It is a poor fit if you require guaranteed Xbox or Switch support. Compare the official platform lists and connection types rather than assuming that a USB dongle or Bluetooth will work on every console.
| Option | Platforms listed by TechRadar | Connection detail relevant to this choice |
|---|---|---|
| PULSE Explore | PS5, Portal, PC, mobile | PlayStation Link adapter plus Bluetooth. |
| Sony INZONE Buds | PS5, PS4, PC, Switch, mobile | Check the current product listing for connection and chat details. |
| SteelSeries Tusq | PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, PC, mobile | Wired 3.5 mm; verify the exact console’s chat support. |
Price and buying context
Prices vary by color, seller, and date. TechRadar cited a typical retail price of $199.99 in 2024, and IGN cited that MSRP in 2026. IGN reported an Amazon price of $128.03 on October 26, 2026, described as 36% off the $199.99 MSRP; that is a volatile street price, not a guaranteed current offer. PlayStation Direct listed Midnight Black at $149.00 with a February 20, 2025 release date. PlayStation UK listed the earbuds at £154.99.
Look for the PULSE Explore wireless earbuds if your priority is PlayStation Link on PS5 or Portal plus Bluetooth phone audio. If using the PS4 or Switch is the deciding factor, be aware that the reported workarounds are not Sony-listed support; for Xbox, choose a headset with explicit Xbox compatibility.
