For most buyers, the Sony a6700 is the safest all-round compact mirrorless camera. It combines a 26.0-megapixel APS-C sensor, a 409 g body, a built-in viewfinder, modern autofocus and access to Sony’s broad E-mount lens range. Choose the Fujifilm X-S20 instead if internal 6.2K 10-bit video and powerful stabilization are priorities; the Canon EOS R10 is the easiest entry point, the Fujifilm X-M5 is the lightest-travel-minded option, and the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV offers the smallest-lens system at the lowest-value end.
The important qualification is that “compact” usually describes the camera body, not the complete kit. A bright zoom, spare battery, card and bag can determine the size and cost you actually carry. This guide compares the five bodies by sensor format, autofocus, stabilization, video, lens ecosystem and practical travel weight.

What are the five best compact mirrorless cameras?
There is no single winner for every photographer. The best choice depends on whether you value autofocus for moving subjects, stabilization, internal video quality, beginner-friendly controls, or the smallest possible lens system.
| Camera | Best suited to | Documented highlights | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sony a6700 | Best all-round hybrid | 26.0MP APS-C sensor; approximately 409 g body weight; about 122.0 × 69.0 × 75.1 mm; viewfinder; E-mount lens system | The body is compact, but fast E-mount lenses can add substantial size and cost. |
| Fujifilm X-S20 | Video and stabilized handheld shooting | Five-axis IBIS rated up to seven stops; internal recording up to 6.2K/30p in 4:2:2 10-bit | Its strongest advantages matter most to creators who will actually use advanced video and stabilization. |
| Canon EOS R10 | Approachable first interchangeable-lens camera | Beginner-oriented controls, subject-tracking autofocus and 15 fps burst capability in current buying-guide coverage | The long-term size and cost of an RF-mount kit depend heavily on the lenses you select. |
| Fujifilm X-M5 | Maximum portability and travel | Compact body, 26MP APS-C sensor, film simulations and travel-friendly design in current comparison coverage | Buyers who require a built-in viewfinder should check the exact configuration before purchase. |
| OM-D E-M10 Mark IV | Value and the smallest overall system | Micro Four Thirds mount with a large selection of relatively small lenses | Its smaller sensor and less advanced autofocus give up some low-light, background-blur and subject-tracking headroom versus newer APS-C rivals. |
That table is a starting point, not a ranking by megapixels. The lens you mount, the way you shoot and the total kit you can carry matter more than a small difference in body specifications.

How compact are these cameras once a lens is attached?
A mirrorless body can fit easily in a small bag while a fast zoom makes the same camera feel much larger. Compare each camera with the lens you will use most often, not with a bare body photograph.
Body size versus carried size
Body weight is useful for comparing camera hardware, but it excludes the lens, battery, memory card, strap and protective case. A small prime lens can preserve the compact advantage; a constant-aperture zoom may dominate the packed volume. Before buying, write down the focal lengths you need and check the dimensions and weight of those specific lenses.
Sensor format and lens scale
The Sony a6700, Fujifilm X-S20, Canon EOS R10 and Fujifilm X-M5 use APS-C sensors. The OM-D E-M10 Mark IV uses the smaller Micro Four Thirds format. Micro Four Thirds can make it easier to assemble a small multi-lens kit, while APS-C generally offers more room for low-light work and shallow-background portraits. Neither advantage is universal: lens aperture, subject distance and your output size also affect the result.
Which camera is best for travel?
For a broad travel brief, start with the Sony a6700. If your priority is carrying the smallest set of lenses, consider the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV; if you want a particularly small APS-C body with built-in creative looks, consider the Fujifilm X-M5.
Sony a6700: the safest all-round travel hybrid
Sony lists a 26.0-megapixel APS-C back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor, approximately 409 g body-only weight and dimensions of about 122.0 × 69.0 × 75.1 mm. It also provides a viewfinder, current autofocus features and the E-mount system, giving travelers a flexible path from a small everyday lens to specialized optics.
Its strength is balance rather than one headline feature. You get enough resolution for cropping, an APS-C sensor for general image quality, a body that remains relatively light and a lens ecosystem with many native and third-party choices. The trade-off is that the smallest body does not guarantee a small complete kit; choose the lens before deciding whether it truly meets your travel-size goal.

Check the physical configuration and controls that matter to you before ordering, especially if you routinely compose through a viewfinder. A small body can be excellent for street scenes, family trips and casual video, but the most comfortable choice depends on how you hold and operate a camera for long periods.
OM-D E-M10 Mark IV: the smallest-system value choice
The E-M10 Mark IV is the value-oriented option in this group. Its Micro Four Thirds mount supports many relatively small lenses, so a two- or three-lens travel kit can remain easy to pack.
The compromise is the format’s smaller sensor and an autofocus system that is less advanced than the newest APS-C competitors. It remains sensible for daylight travel photography, learning interchangeable-lens controls and buyers who value system size and price over maximum subject-tracking performance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs the Sony a6700 better than the Fujifilm X-S20?
Neither is categorically better. The a6700 is the more balanced recommendation for stills, autofocus and lens-system flexibility; the X-S20 is the stronger choice when internal high-quality video and stabilization are central to your work.
| Decision point | Sony a6700 | Fujifilm X-S20 |
|---|---|---|
| Sensor | 26.0MP APS-C, according to Sony’s specification | APS-C; the cited product evidence emphasizes video and stabilization rather than a megapixel figure |
| Stabilization | Not stated in the supplied specifications | Five-axis in-body stabilization rated up to seven stops |
| Internal video | Not stated in the supplied specifications | Up to 6.2K/30p, internally, in 4:2:2 10-bit |
| Body reference | Approximately 409 g and 122.0 × 69.0 × 75.1 mm | Exact weight and dimensions were not stated in the cited evidence |
| System emphasis | Viewfinder, autofocus and broad E-mount choice | Video production and handheld stabilization |
Choose the X-S20 if you will record in its higher-resolution, 10-bit modes or frequently shoot handheld at slower shutter speeds. Choose the a6700 if you want one body to cover travel stills, moving subjects and a wide range of E-mount lenses without making video the deciding factor.
Which compact mirrorless camera is best for beginners?
The Canon EOS R10 is the most approachable starting point in this shortlist. The OM-D E-M10 Mark IV is the alternative when a lower-cost, small-lens system matters more than the newest autofocus behavior.

Those features help a new photographer move beyond static subjects: select a subject, let tracking assist with movement and use the burst mode when timing is difficult. Beginners should still learn shutter speed, aperture, ISO and focus-area selection; automation works best when the photographer understands what it is trying to do.
Plan the lens purchase at the same time as the body. The smallest available lens may be ideal for travel, while a longer or brighter lens can be more useful for sports, wildlife or portraits but will change the size and budget of the kit.
OM-D E-M10 Mark IV: an inexpensive way to learn a system
The E-M10 Mark IV can be a forgiving first interchangeable-lens camera when portability and value are the main constraints. Its mount offers many compact lenses, making it possible to explore wide, standard and telephoto perspectives without immediately carrying APS-C-sized optics.
Its limitations are easiest to notice with fast action, very dim scenes and situations where strong background blur is essential. If those situations describe your photography, the EOS R10 or a newer APS-C alternative is a safer starting point.
What should you know about the Fujifilm X-S20 for video?
The X-S20 has the clearest documented video advantage in this group. Fujifilm states that its five-axis in-body image stabilization provides up to seven stops and that it records internally up to 6.2K at 30p in 4:2:2 10-bit color.
“Up to seven stops” is a manufacturer rating, not a guarantee for every focal length, subject or shutter speed. Stabilization can reduce camera shake, but it cannot freeze a moving person or vehicle; you still need an appropriate shutter speed. Likewise, 6.2K recording creates cropping and reframing options, but it also creates larger files and greater demands on cards, storage and editing hardware.
If you only publish short clips in a lower-resolution format, a camera with simpler video modes may be easier to manage. If you grade footage, reframe shots or want more flexibility in post-production, the X-S20’s cited internal 10-bit mode is a meaningful reason to choose it.

How important are autofocus and burst speed?
Autofocus matters most when your subject moves unpredictably. Sony and Canon are the safer starting points for moving-subject work in this group, while the EOS R10’s cited 15 fps burst gives beginners a practical way to increase the chance of catching a decisive moment.

Check the current manual and firmware notes for the exact people, animal, vehicle or tracking modes you need. A high burst rate also fills a card quickly, so use short controlled bursts and select images later rather than holding the shutter continuously.
How do the lens systems affect the real cost?
The camera mount determines which native lenses fit directly and which third-party options are available. The shortlist spans Sony E mount, Canon RF mount, Fujifilm X mount and Micro Four Thirds, and each system has a different selection of compact primes, travel zooms and specialist lenses.
- Choose your everyday focal range. Decide whether you need a wide travel view, a normal perspective, a portrait lens or a telephoto before comparing bodies.
- Price the complete first kit. Add the body, one lens, spare battery, memory card and bag. Kit contents and live prices change by region.
- Check the second lens you are likely to buy. A system that is inexpensive today may become costly if the lens you need later is unavailable or unusually large.
- Compare total packed weight. Include lens caps, charger, batteries and protection, not just the specifications for the camera body.
This approach prevents a common mistake: selecting the smallest body and discovering that the only lens suitable for your subject makes the package heavier than a competing system.
What should you check before buying?
- Viewfinder requirement: If you compose in bright sun or prefer eye-level shooting, confirm that the exact model includes the viewfinder you expect.
- Stabilization need: Handheld night scenes and video benefit from in-body stabilization, but stabilization does not stop subject movement.
- Video workflow: Confirm the resolution, frame rate, bit depth, card speed and storage capacity your editing process can handle.
- Autofocus subjects: Verify current recognition modes and firmware support for the people, animals or vehicles you photograph.
- Battery and card planning: Carry a spare battery and a card with enough capacity for your longest photo or video session.
- Regional package differences: Retail boxes, chargers, lenses and promotional prices vary, so check the listing for your country rather than relying on a foreign kit description.
How should you make the final choice?
Use this short decision path:
- Pick the Sony a6700 when you want the broadest all-round answer: APS-C stills, a viewfinder, modern autofocus and an extensive E-mount path.
- Pick the Fujifilm X-S20 when internal 6.2K/30p 4:2:2 10-bit video and up to seven-stop five-axis stabilization justify your choice.
- Pick the Canon EOS R10 when you are new to interchangeable-lens cameras and want approachable controls, subject tracking and a 15 fps burst mode.
- Pick the Fujifilm X-M5 when maximum portability, a 26MP APS-C sensor and film simulations matter more than a feature-heavy body.
- Pick the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV when the smallest lens ecosystem and value are more important than APS-C low-light headroom and the newest autofocus.
Whichever body you choose, buy the lens that matches your subject first. The camera is only one part of the compact system you will carry.
Frequently asked questions
Do compact mirrorless cameras need a separate viewfinder?
No. Some models are designed around a rear screen, while others include an electronic viewfinder. If eye-level framing is important for you, verify the exact body configuration before purchase rather than assuming every compact model has one.
Is 26 megapixels enough for travel photography?
For most travel uses, 26MP provides useful room to crop while keeping files manageable. The more important decision is whether your lens reaches the subject and whether the camera’s autofocus and stabilization suit the scenes you expect to shoot.

Can image stabilization replace a tripod?
Stabilization can reduce shake from your hands, especially with static subjects, but it cannot prevent motion blur from a moving person, animal or vehicle. A tripod or faster shutter speed is still needed when the subject itself is moving.
Should I buy a kit zoom or a small prime lens first?
A kit zoom is usually the more flexible starting point because it covers several viewing angles without changing lenses. A small prime can make the camera easier to carry and encourage low-light or shallow-depth-of-field experimentation, but you must work within one fixed perspective.
