The best Canon point-and-shoot depends on what you photograph. The PowerShot G7 X Mark III is the strongest all-round choice for image quality, creator video and low-light flexibility; the G5 X Mark II adds a pop-up electronic viewfinder for stills; the SX740 HS is the travel choice when a 40x, 24–960mm-equivalent zoom matters most; and the ELPH 360 HS A is the lightest casual carry. The older G7 X Mark II can still make sense when its condition, warranty and price are clearly better than newer alternatives.

Canon availability is uneven by region. In the United States, Canon currently marks the G7 X Mark III discontinued and out of stock, so remaining, used or refurbished inventory may be the practical route. Check the exact model, seller, warranty and current price before ordering.

Which Canon point-and-shoot should you buy?

Choose by the compromise you are willing to make: sensor size, zoom reach, video tools, viewfinder design or carry weight. These five models cover distinct jobs rather than forming a simple good-to-bad ranking.

  • Best overall image quality and creator video: Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III.
  • Best premium stills compact with a viewfinder: Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II.
  • Best Canon camera for travel and distant subjects: Canon PowerShot SX740 HS.
  • Best small Canon camera for casual carry: Canon PowerShot ELPH 360 HS A.
  • Best older 1-inch alternative: Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II, provided the individual example is in good condition and fairly priced.

The G7 X Mark III and G5 X Mark II use 1-inch sensors, while the SX740 HS and ELPH 360 HS A use smaller 1/2.3-inch sensors. Sensor size gives the two 1-inch models a stronger starting point for low-light work and background separation; that is a sensor-size inference, not a laboratory comparison of finished images.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What are the documented differences between the five cameras?

The table below uses Canon specifications and product material. It lists only features documented for each model.

Model Sensor and optical reach Canon-documented highlights
PowerShot G7 X Mark III 20.1MP 1-inch stacked CMOS; 24–100mm-equivalent lens; f/1.8–2.8 Optical image stabilization, 4K/30p, tilting touchscreen, vertical-video support, live streaming and a creator-oriented design
PowerShot G5 X Mark II 20.1MP 1-inch stacked CMOS; 5x optical zoom Pop-up electronic viewfinder, Touch & Drag AF and 4K/30p video
PowerShot SX740 HS 20.3MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS; 40x optical zoom; 24–960mm-equivalent lens Optical image stabilization and 4K video; 299g CIPA weight
PowerShot ELPH 360 HS A 20.2MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS 147g CIPA weight for especially light everyday carry
PowerShot G7 X Mark II Older 1-inch compact generation Canon’s catalog still lists the model; condition, warranty and price need especially careful checking

Megapixel counts are close across the range, so they do not tell the whole story. The lens aperture, sensor area, stabilization, framing options and the condition of a used camera can matter more than a small difference in resolution.

Which Canon point-and-shoot is best overall?

The PowerShot G7 X Mark III is the best all-round pick when you want a pocketable camera that can handle stills, low light and creator video without carrying interchangeable lenses.

Why the G7 X Mark III stands out

Canon specifies a 20.1MP 1-inch stacked CMOS sensor and a 24–100mm-equivalent lens with a bright f/1.8–2.8 aperture. The wide end suits interiors, street scenes and group photographs; the 100mm-equivalent telephoto end gives useful portrait compression and framing flexibility. Optical image stabilization helps steady handheld shooting, although stabilization cannot freeze a moving subject.

For video, Canon documents 4K recording at 30 frames per second, vertical-video support and direct live-streaming capability. Canon describes the camera as “video creator ready” and says it can use live-streaming services directly to YouTube. Its tilting touchscreen and microphone-friendly creator design make it more practical for self-recording than a basic pocket camera.

Who should skip it?

Canon’s U.S. product page currently marks the G7 X Mark III discontinued and out of stock. If you buy a used or refurbished example, inspect the lens, zoom movement, screen hinge, buttons, battery condition and any signs of moisture or impact. A heavily inflated price can erase the value of its newer video features; compare the seller’s warranty and return policy with the cost of a current alternative.

Which Canon compact is best for still photography with a viewfinder?

The PowerShot G5 X Mark II is the better choice when composing through an eye-level finder is important but you still want a compact 1-inch camera.

Viewfinder and focusing advantages

Canon specifies a 20.1MP 1-inch stacked CMOS sensor and a 5x optical zoom. Its pop-up electronic viewfinder is useful in bright sunlight, where a rear screen can be difficult to see, and it lets you brace the camera more naturally for deliberate stills. Canon’s 2023 product guide says the pop-up finder and Touch & Drag AF are designed to make framing and focusing easier.

Touch & Drag AF lets you move the focus point with a finger on the touchscreen while looking through the finder. That can be faster than using directional buttons when your subject is off-center. The camera also records 4K/30p video, but its documented strengths are stills handling and the finder rather than the G7 X Mark III’s creator-specific features.

Trade-offs to consider

A 5x zoom offers less reach than the SX740 HS’s 40x range. If you routinely photograph wildlife, distant architecture or performers from the back of a venue, the G5 X Mark II’s larger sensor will not compensate for missing focal length. If you mostly shoot people, food, travel scenes and family events, the 1-inch sensor and viewfinder can be a more useful combination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Canon camera has the most zoom?

The PowerShot SX740 HS is the clear reach champion. Its 40x optical zoom covers a 24–960mm-equivalent range, so it is the Canon camera in this group to choose for distant subjects and travel scenes where changing lenses is not an option.

What the 24–960mm range means

At 24mm equivalent, the lens is suited to landscapes, buildings and group shots. At 960mm equivalent, a faraway subject occupies much more of the frame than it would with the G7 X models’ shorter zooms. Optical zoom preserves more detail than enlarging a wide-angle image digitally, although atmospheric haze, heat shimmer and camera shake become increasingly visible at long focal lengths.

Canon specifies optical image stabilization, which is valuable at the telephoto end, and 4K video. Stabilization helps counter your hand movement; it cannot correct a subject moving quickly across the frame. Use a fast shutter speed, brace the camera against a solid surface or support it on a tripod when the light is low.

Sensor-size compromise

The SX740 HS uses a 20.3MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor. That is substantially smaller than the 1-inch sensors in the G7 X Mark III and G5 X Mark II, so the 40x zoom comes with less low-light and background-control headroom. This is the central trade-off: choose the SX740 HS for reach and portability, not because its megapixel number is higher.

Canon lists a CIPA weight of 299g. That remains manageable for day trips, but it is roughly twice the listed weight of the ELPH 360 HS A, and the extended lens barrel makes the SX740 HS less pocket-friendly than a flat compact.

Which small Canon camera is easiest to carry every day?

The PowerShot ELPH 360 HS A is the lightest model in this group at 147g CIPA weight. It is the sensible pick when the camera must stay in a small bag or pocket and you value having a dedicated camera rather than relying on a phone.

Why weight matters

A camera that is always with you can produce more photographs than a technically superior model left at home. The ELPH 360 HS A’s 20.2MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor provides ample resolution for everyday snapshots, travel records and web sharing, while its low listed weight minimizes the penalty of carrying a separate device.

What you give up

The cited Canon material does not provide the same detailed creator-video feature set for the ELPH 360 HS A as it does for the G7 X Mark III, nor does it document a 1-inch sensor or a long 40x zoom. Expect the smallest body to be the least specialized option: ideal for convenience, less compelling when low-light quality, strong background blur or distant-subject framing is your priority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the older Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II still worth buying?

It can be, but only when the specific used or remaining-new unit is priced and warranted appropriately. Canon’s catalog still lists the G7 X Mark II, yet it is an older generation than the Mark III.

When it makes sense

  • You want a compact camera with a 1-inch sensor and find a clean example at a substantially better price than newer models.
  • You prioritize still photographs and do not need the Mark III’s documented vertical-video and live-streaming workflow.
  • The seller provides a meaningful return window or warranty and can verify the camera’s operating condition.

What to inspect

  • Check that the lens extends and retracts smoothly through the full zoom range.
  • Inspect the front element and LCD for scratches, haze, dead pixels or separation.
  • Test every control, flash function, connection and memory-card door before the return period ends.
  • Ask how old the battery is; lithium-ion batteries lose capacity with age even when the camera appears clean.
  • Compare the total cost, including a battery and card if needed, with a G7 X Mark III, G5 X Mark II or another current compact.

Which Canon camera is best for travel?

There are two different travel answers. Pick the SX740 HS when photographing distant landmarks, wildlife or outdoor activities is the priority; pick the ELPH 360 HS A when minimum weight and simple snapshots matter more.

For reach and changing distances: SX740 HS

The 24–960mm-equivalent optical range covers wide scenes and extreme telephoto without carrying extra lenses. Its 299g CIPA weight is reasonable for a full day of sightseeing, and optical stabilization helps when the light falls. Pack a secure wrist strap or small case because a long-zoom compact is more vulnerable to knocks than a flat camera.

Which Canon camera is best for vlogging and vertical video?

The G7 X Mark III is the strongest match because Canon explicitly documents 4K/30p, vertical-video support, a tilting touchscreen, a microphone-friendly creator design and live streaming to YouTube.

A tilting screen helps you monitor framing when the camera is aimed at you. Vertical-video support is useful when your final destination is a portrait-oriented social feed, because you can compose for that format instead of cropping a horizontal recording later. Live streaming is a documented capability, but service availability and account requirements can change, so verify the current platform setup before a planned broadcast.

The G5 X Mark II also records 4K/30p, but Canon’s published material emphasizes its pop-up finder and Touch & Drag AF rather than the Mark III’s creator workflow. The SX740 HS has documented 4K video, while the cited specifications do not establish an equivalent creator feature set for the ELPH 360 HS A or G7 X Mark II.

How does sensor size affect your choice?

A 1-inch sensor is physically larger than a 1/2.3-inch sensor. With similar framing and technology, the larger sensor generally gives you more flexibility in dim light and makes it easier to obtain a softer background, while the smaller sensor enables a longer zoom in a compact body.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a 1-inch model when

  • You photograph indoors, at dusk or at night and want more usable image quality before adding flash or a tripod.
  • You want portraits with more subject separation from the background.
  • You value a bright f/1.8–2.8 lens and creator-oriented video in a small body.

Choose a 1/2.3-inch model when

  • You need the SX740 HS’s 40x optical zoom and 24–960mm-equivalent reach.
  • You value the ELPH 360 HS A’s 147g carry weight above low-light flexibility.
  • You mainly share daylight travel snapshots and need a simple, compact camera.

These are practical sensor-size expectations, not a claim that every photograph from one model will beat every photograph from another. Lighting, technique, subject movement and processing remain important.

  1. Confirm the exact model name. “G7 X Mark II,” “G7 X Mark III,” “G5 X Mark II,” “SX740 HS” and “ELPH 360 HS A” have different sensors, zooms and features. Do not rely on a listing title that omits the generation.
  2. Check regional status. The G7 X Mark III is currently shown as discontinued and out of stock on Canon’s U.S. product page. A product available in another country may have different warranty coverage or accessories.
  3. Calculate the complete cost. Include the camera, battery, charger or charging solution, memory card, case and shipping. A low headline price can be misleading if the battery is degraded or the seller offers no return period.
  4. Verify card support. Canon specifications identify SD-family card support for these cameras; confirm the exact model’s SD, SDHC or SDXC requirements and the seller’s included accessories before buying.
  5. Check the battery. Canon identifies the NB-13L battery for the G7 X Mark III. For any other model, verify the battery designation in that model’s current manual or listing rather than assuming batteries are interchangeable.
  6. Read the warranty terms. A manufacturer-backed warranty, authorized seller or clear used-equipment return policy can be worth more than a modest price difference.

How should you set up a Canon point-and-shoot after purchase?

A short setup routine prevents avoidable failures on the first trip.

  1. Charge the supplied battery fully and test how quickly it loses charge while zooming, using the flash and recording video.
  2. Insert a compatible SD-family card and format it in the camera after copying any files you need to keep. Formatting erases the card, so confirm the card is empty first.
  3. Set the date, time and time zone so filenames and travel records sort correctly.
  4. Take test photographs at the wide and telephoto ends, then inspect them on a computer or large display for focus, dust, uneven exposure and zoom errors.
  5. Record a short video clip, review the sound and confirm that the card has enough capacity for your intended resolution.
  6. Carry a spare battery when the camera will be away from a charger all day. Keep the camera and card in a small protective case, especially for the SX740 HS’s extending lens.

What are the main trade-offs in this Canon lineup?

  • Image quality versus reach: The G7 X Mark III and G5 X Mark II start with larger 1-inch sensors; the SX740 HS trades sensor area for a 40x zoom.
  • Creator tools versus finder ergonomics: The G7 X Mark III emphasizes tilting-screen video, vertical capture and live streaming; the G5 X Mark II emphasizes its pop-up electronic viewfinder and Touch & Drag AF.
  • Portability versus capability: The ELPH 360 HS A weighs 147g, while the SX740 HS weighs 299g because it carries a much longer zoom system.
  • Newer features versus availability: The G7 X Mark III may require a used or refurbished purchase in the United States because Canon currently marks it discontinued and out of stock.
  • Price versus risk: An older G7 X Mark II can be attractive, but a low price is not a bargain if the battery, lens mechanism or warranty is unreliable.

How do you make the final choice?

Start with the subject you miss most often. If your photographs are soft or noisy indoors, choose a 1-inch model. If distant subjects are too small in every frame, choose the SX740 HS. If the camera stays home because it is inconvenient to carry, choose the ELPH 360 HS A. If you publish or stream video, prioritize the G7 X Mark III’s documented creator features, subject to availability. If you compose through a finder, choose the G5 X Mark II.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III use?

Canon identifies the NB-13L as the G7 X Mark III battery. When buying used, ask whether the original battery is included and how much capacity it retains; a replacement should be budgeted separately if the seller cannot verify battery health.

Do these Canon cameras use SD memory cards?

Canon specifications identify SD-family card support, including SD, SDHC and SDXC categories for the lineup. Confirm the exact model’s card requirements and the card supplied by the seller, because bundles and regional packages can differ.

Is a used Canon G7 X Mark III safe to buy?

It can be a sensible purchase because the model is currently discontinued and out of stock on Canon’s U.S. page, but condition varies widely. Buy only with a return window or warranty, test the lens, screen, controls, battery and recording functions immediately, and compare the total cost with other 1-inch compacts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does a 1-inch sensor change in everyday photos?

Compared with a 1/2.3-inch sensor, a 1-inch sensor generally gives more flexibility in dim light and more potential for background blur at similar framing. The benefit is an inference from sensor size, not a guaranteed result for every scene or a substitute for testing the exact camera.
