There is no reliable answer to “Which came first?” until you define the exact movie, exact game, release milestone, territory and version being compared. A film festival premiere is not the same event as its theatrical opening, home-video debut or streaming date. A game’s arcade launch, first platform release, regional launch, port, remake and re-release are separate records. Identify those details, verify that the works are actually related, then compare release-scoped evidence. Your conclusion should say exactly what came first and within which scope—for example, “Within the stated scope, the game came first: its earliest documented arcade release was on this date in this territory, while the film’s selected theatrical release followed on that date.” Chronology alone does not prove adaptation, influence or licensing.
What does “came first” mean for a movie and a game?
“First” is a question about a defined event, not simply the earliest year shown beside two titles. Choose the scope before searching, and do not switch scopes halfway through the investigation.

- Earliest authorized public release worldwide: the first documented public availability in any territory.
- First release in a named country or language: useful when the comparison concerns a local audience.
- Same-territory comparison: compare both works in one country rather than mixing a festival appearance in one place with a retail launch in another.
- Film premiere: the first festival, press or special screening, which may precede commercial release.
- Theatrical opening: the first public cinema release in a specified market.
- Home-video or streaming release: later distribution milestones that should not be substituted for a cinema date.
- Game arcade launch: the first public arcade availability, which may precede a home version by months or years.
- Original platform release: the first publication of the original build on a named platform.
- Retail, digital or regional launch: a commercial release date for a particular market and distribution channel.
Guinness record wording demonstrates why this matters: it can distinguish the first game based on an official movie licence from an earlier game associated with a movie release. A claim that one medium “came first” is incomplete unless it identifies the event being compared.
How do I identify the exact movie and game?
Start by creating a record for each work before looking at dates. A title alone is not a sufficient identifier because films can have alternate cuts and translated names, while games can share a title across platforms, publishers and unrelated productions.

Record the film’s identity
- Complete title, including an original-language title and alternate title where relevant.
- Director, principal production company, distributor and year of production.
- Language, country of production and the specific cut or edition.
- Running time when different cuts could be confused.
- Release milestone: festival premiere, theatrical opening, national release, home-video debut or streaming launch.
- Territory and exact date, or the narrowest date the evidence supports.
A director’s cut, restored print or re-release is a separate release record. Do not replace the original film’s date with the date of a later version simply because that date is easier to find.
Record the game’s identity
- Complete title, developer, publisher and original platform.
- Region, language, platform or arcade board, and the specific build or edition.
- Whether the record concerns an arcade cabinet, cartridge, disc, download, compilation, remake, port or re-release.
- Serial number, product code, media header, checksum or another identifier when available.
- Release channel and date: arcade, retail, digital, subscription catalogue or another defined event.
Title Screen distinguishes a game as a work across platforms and markets from a release on one platform in one market. That distinction prevents a later port from being mistaken for the original game.

A shared title is only a lead. Confirm the relationship before drawing a chronological or adaptation conclusion.
Direct adaptation
A direct adaptation explicitly derives from the earlier work. Look for adaptation credits, rights-holder documentation, matching characters and settings, or production material identifying the source.
Licensed movie tie-in
A game may use a film property under licence while telling a different story or covering only part of the film. Licence records and copyright details can establish the rights relationship even when the plot is not a scene-by-scene adaptation.
Game-based movie
A later film may be based on a game franchise, character or setting. A film’s title matching a game’s title does not establish this by itself; seek explicit credits, studio statements or other production documentation.

Remake, reboot or revision
A remake or reboot reinterprets an earlier work and needs its own release record. Do not collapse the original and remake into one date or treat a game remake as the first release of the original game.
Port, compilation or re-release
A port moves a game to another platform; a compilation bundles an existing game with other titles; a re-release republishes an earlier work. Each can have a later date without being a new adaptation.
Shared title or coincidence
If no documented rights or creative connection is established, label the relationship as unconfirmed or coincidental. Similar premises, imagery or names may justify further investigation but do not prove derivation.
What evidence should I collect for each release?
Build one row for every candidate release rather than forcing all dates into a single “release date” field. The following structure keeps the comparison reproducible.

For games, release-scoped records, original packaging, media headers, title screens, contemporaneous press and publisher documentation are stronger than a title-only database match. Title Screen’s methodology ranks identifier-based joins and media evidence above loose web matches because the same title can refer to another edition or another game.
Where can I find reliable movie release dates?
Begin with the distributor or studio’s historical material when it identifies the event and territory. Then check institutional and archival sources that preserve contemporary records.

- Festival programmes and archive records for premiere dates.
- National film archives and institutional catalogues.
- Copyright records, which can help establish version and ownership details.
- Contemporary trade press documenting a theatrical opening or distribution announcement.
- Established film catalogues such as the AFI Catalog and the BFI National Archive.
The BFI describes itself as the UK’s lead organisation for film and the moving image and maintains a major National Archive. A catalogue entry is useful, but inspect what event its date represents before comparing it with a game launch.
Where can I find reliable game release dates?
Use records tied to a specific platform, market and version. There is no universal game registry, so a single database entry should not automatically be treated as worldwide proof.
- Publisher documentation and contemporaneous launch announcements.
- Original packaging, manuals, cartridge or disc markings and regional product codes.
- Media headers, title screens and other evidence identifying a particular build.
- Arcade operator records or period trade coverage for an arcade launch.
- Platform-holder catalogues and dated retail or digital listings.
- Specialist databases that show their identifiers and release scope rather than only a title and year.
Title Screen’s methodology states: “There is no registry of video games to check against.” That does not mean useful databases do not exist; it means their records need to be joined to the exact release and checked for uncertainty.
How should I compare conflicting dates?
Do not average dates or silently choose the one that produces the desired answer. First determine whether the records describe different events or different versions.
- Copy each date exactly. Preserve the source’s day, month and year, and note whether it is a premiere, opening, retail date, arcade launch or another event.
- Normalize territory and language. A United States theatrical opening and a Japanese arcade launch are not a same-market comparison.
- Separate versions. Check for a remake, port, compilation, director’s cut, restoration or re-release.
- Check the identifier. Confirm that the cited game build, platform or product code is the one being compared.
- Rank the evidence. Prefer primary, institutional and archival records; then consider independent agreement among sources.
- Test source independence. Several databases may copy the same original entry and therefore do not constitute independent confirmation.
- Keep both dates when both are valid. Explain what each date represents instead of declaring one “wrong.”
- Narrow the verdict if needed. If worldwide priority is not established, say “earliest documented release within the available evidence.”
For example, a film festival premiere may precede its first commercial cinema opening, while a game may appear in arcades before its home-console edition. Those facts are not contradictions; they answer different questions.
What should the final chronology sentence say?
State the result with the same scope used in the evidence table. A useful structure is:

Within the stated scope, [movie/game] came first: its earliest documented [release milestone] was [date] in [territory], while [other work/version] was released on [date] in [territory].
Replace every variable with a precise title, version, event, date and territory. If the evidence is incomplete, use “earliest documented” rather than “first worldwide.” If a date is known only to the year, do not invent a day or month.
How do I separate chronology from adaptation or influence?
Write two conclusions, not one. The chronology conclusion answers which selected release occurred earlier. The relationship conclusion answers whether the later work adapted, licensed, remade or was influenced by the earlier one.
- Chronology evidence: dated release records tied to the selected version, platform, event and territory.
- Adaptation evidence: explicit credits, licence records, rights-holder connections, production documents or distinctive correspondence with source material.
- Influence evidence: creator statements, development notes or other documentation showing that one work informed the other.
A game released before a film may have inspired it, but the dates alone do not prove influence. A film and game released close together may instead be a coordinated licensed tie-in. If the records show only similar names or premises, report a shared title or unconfirmed relationship.

How confident can a “first” claim be?
Confidence depends on scope, identifier specificity, source quality and unresolved conflicts. Do not turn a well-documented regional release into an unsupported worldwide claim.
Title Screen’s 2026 build illustrates the problem in its own reference data: it reports 106,671 date facts, with 22.9% marked contested and 64.2% having agreement from an identifier-joined source. Those figures describe that project’s published date facts, not the entertainment industry as a whole. They show why a release-level evidence trail is more informative than a bare year.

Use wording such as “documented,” “within the selected territory” and “for the original platform” when those qualifications are necessary. If a source conflict remains unresolved, name the competing events and state what cannot be established.
What mistakes most often produce the wrong answer?
- Comparing years only: two works released in the same year may be months apart, or one date may be a premiere and the other a retail launch.
- Mixing territories: a worldwide film date and a country-specific game date answer different questions.
- Using a remake as the original: later remakes and reboots need separate records.
- Counting a port as the first game: the original arcade or platform release may be earlier.
- Treating a title match as proof of adaptation: unrelated works can share a name.
- Using a streaming date as the film’s release: streaming is a later distribution milestone unless that is explicitly the chosen scope.
- Trusting copied database entries: multiple sites may repeat one unverified date.
- Overstating uncertainty: a disputed worldwide date does not erase a well-established regional release.
- Overstating certainty: one catalogue entry does not automatically prove global priority.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a database’s single release year settle which came first?
Usually not. A year-only entry may omit the market, platform, cut or event type, and several sites may have copied the same underlying date. Treat it as a lead until a release-scoped or institutional record confirms what the year represents.
Does a trailer, demo or announcement count as a movie or game release?
Not automatically. Marketing material, a trade demonstration or a playable demo can precede public availability but is a different milestone. Count it only if your stated question explicitly concerns first public exhibition or first playable appearance.
How should I handle a title that was translated or renamed between countries?
Record the original title and each relevant local title, then match the underlying work using creators, publisher or distributor and identifiers. Compare the dates for the same work and market rather than treating a translated title as a separate production.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can a copyright registration prove that a game or film was released?
It can document that a work or version existed by a certain date, but registration is not necessarily evidence of public distribution. Use it alongside premiere, theatrical, arcade, retail or platform records to establish the release milestone.
