You can delete some built-in iPhone apps, but not all of them. The apps available to delete depend on your iOS version and region, and deleting an app can also remove related data or affect features that rely on it. If you only want a tidier Home Screen, choose “Remove from Home Screen” instead: the app stays in your App Library.
Apple’s support pages do not establish that every iPhone comes with exactly 50 pre-installed apps. The list below is Apple’s list of built-in apps that may be deleted on iOS 14 or later—not a count of everything installed on every iPhone.

Which built-in apps can you delete on iPhone?
Apple says that on iOS 14 or later, you can delete the following built-in apps from an iPhone. Availability can vary, so a listed app may not appear on every device. Some apps in Apple’s broader list apply to iPad rather than iPhone; the table below keeps to the iPhone apps Apple names.
| Built-in apps Apple lists as deletable |
|---|
| Activity, Apple Books, Apple TV, Calculator, Calendar, Clock, Compass, Contacts, FaceTime, Files, Find My, Freeform, Health, Home, iTunes Store, Mail, Maps, Measure, Music, News (where available), Notes, Podcasts, Reminders, Shortcuts, Stocks, Tips, Translate, TV (where available), Voice Memos, Wallet, Watch, and Weather. |
This is not a promise that every app is removable on every iPhone. Apple also documents additional deletion options in the European Union and Japan; those are covered below. See Apple’s built-in app deletion list and guidance.
#1 Best Overall

- Compatibility: FireMirror supports a wide range of devices, including iPhone, iPad, and Mac models.
- Easy setup: FireMirror is quick and easy to set up, with no additional hardware required.
- Popular streaming services: FireMirror supports popular streaming services such as Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube.
Hide an app or delete it?
If your goal is simply to declutter, you can remove an app from the Home Screen without deleting it. Apple’s iPhone guide distinguishes the two choices:
- Remove from Home Screen: the app remains in the App Library and can still be found there.
- Delete App: the app is deleted from the iPhone.
To reach the choice, touch and hold the app on the Home Screen, then select the remove option and choose whether to remove it from the Home Screen or delete it. Exact menu wording can vary by iOS version. Apple explains the distinction in its iPhone app removal guide.

What can happen when you delete a built-in app?
Deleting a built-in app can do more than remove its icon. Apple says, “When you delete a built-in app from your device, you also delete any related user data and configuration files.” It also documents effects on features connected to particular apps. Check the app’s consequences before confirming deletion.

| App or group | Apple-documented consequence |
|---|---|
| Podcasts | Podcasts is no longer available through CarPlay. |
| Stocks or Weather | That app’s information is removed from other Apple surfaces. |
| Calculator | Calculator is removed from Control Center. |
| Contacts | Contact information remains available in the Phone app. |
| FaceTime | FaceTime calling remains available through Contacts and Phone, but deleting the app affects other ways of using FaceTime. |
| Health | Deleting Health turns off Medication Reminders, Sleep, Cycle Tracking, and Health Sharing. Apple says health data remains on iPhone. You may need to unpair an Apple Watch. |
| Find My | Existing location-sharing relationships are not broken, but you lose visibility in the app into previously paired AirTag and other compatible items. |
| Watch or Health | Deleting either app may require you to unpair a paired Apple Watch. |
These are examples, not an exhaustive list of every dependency. Apple’s support article on deleting built-in apps describes the listed effects.

How to restore a deleted built-in app
Apple’s general restoration method is to redownload the app from the App Store:
- Open the App Store.
- Search for the exact name of the deleted app.
- Tap the redownload control beside the app.
- Wait for the app to download and reappear on your iPhone.
Restoring an app does not change the fact that deleting it removes related user data and configuration files; Apple’s guidance does not promise that deleted data will return with the app.

Additional deletion options in the EU and Japan
Apple documents extra built-in app deletion options for people in the European Union and Japan. The available apps and requirements depend on the country or region and Apple’s stated conditions; they should not be treated as generally available everywhere.

European Union
In the EU, Apple lists additional deletable apps including Messages, App Store, Camera, Photos, and Safari. Some deletions have prerequisites or significant effects:
Best Value
- Messages: install an alternative messaging app and set it as the default before deleting Messages.
- App Store: set an alternative marketplace as the default before deleting it. Once deleted, you cannot receive automatic updates or manually update apps previously downloaded from the App Store, and you cannot redownload other Apple apps until you restore the App Store. Apple’s restoration path is Settings > Apps > App Installation.
- Camera: deleting the Camera app removes system gestures and controls that open it. Other apps can still access the iPhone’s built-in camera hardware.
Japan
Apple lists Safari as an additional app that can be deleted on iPhone in Japan. The region-specific rules and steps are described in Apple’s guidance for certain countries or regions.
Quick Recap
Before you delete an app
- Decide whether removing it from the Home Screen is enough; that keeps it in the App Library.
- Check that your iOS version and region allow deletion of that app.
- Consider whether the app contains data or supports a feature you use.
- If you plan to restore it later, keep in mind that the standard redownload route uses the App Store.
