The best British TV streaming route depends on what you want to watch. BBC iPlayer is the essential BBC catch-up and live service, ITVX covers ITV programmes and offers a paid tier that includes BritBox UK access, Channel 4 and 5 provide free ad-supported catch-up, and Freeview Play brings several broadcaster apps together. UKTV Play adds Dave, Drama and Yesterday on demand.
Most of these services are free to use with adverts, but BBC iPlayer requires a UK TV Licence even for on-demand programmes. ITVX Premium is listed at £5.99 per month in 2026 and removes adverts from on-demand viewing, subject to licensing restrictions. The guide below compares the five routes by catalogue, live viewing, devices, cost and regional limitations.

Which British TV streaming service should you start with?
Start with the broadcaster that owns the programme you want, then add an aggregator if you want a single place to find several apps. There is no universal winner because each service has a different catalogue and licence arrangement.
| Service | Price and adverts | Live viewing | Best for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BBC iPlayer | Free to use, but a UK TV Licence is required | BBC live channels and selected live programming | BBC series, news, documentaries and catch-up | The licence requirement also applies to on-demand BBC programmes |
| ITVX | Free with adverts; ITVX Premium is listed at £5.99 per month | ITV live channels and eligible live programming | ITV box sets, films, exclusives and the BritBox UK catalogue through a paid subscription | Downloads and programme rights vary by title |
| Channel 4 streaming | Free with adverts | Channel 4, E4, Film4, More4 and related live feeds where available | Channel 4 originals, reality, comedy, films and box sets | Current availability and advertising rules depend on the app and programme |
| 5 / My5 | Free with adverts | Live and catch-up access to the Channel 5 family | Channel 5, 5USA, 5STAR, 5SELECT and related programming | Titles and live feeds can change as rights expire |
| Freeview Play and UKTV Play | Free with adverts | Freeview Play links to live and catch-up services; UKTV Play focuses on on-demand viewing | Finding several broadcaster apps in one place, plus Dave, Drama and Yesterday | Freeview channel availability can vary by television region |
What does BBC iPlayer offer?
BBC iPlayer is the main route for watching BBC programmes after broadcast and for accessing BBC live channels online. It is the strongest choice when the programme is made or commissioned by the BBC, but it is not a general-purpose replacement for every British broadcaster.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Catch-up and box sets
The service carries recently broadcast BBC programmes, returning series and selected archive material. Availability is determined by programme rights, so a series can disappear or arrive later even when the BBC still promotes it elsewhere.
Live viewing
BBC iPlayer also provides live streams of BBC channels and eligible live events. Watching a live stream counts as watching television as it is broadcast, regardless of whether you use a television, computer, phone or another connected device.
The licence rule
A UK TV Licence is required to use BBC iPlayer, including its on-demand programmes. GOV.UK states that a licence is needed to watch or record programmes as they are broadcast on a television, computer or other device, and to watch on-demand BBC programmes on iPlayer.
What is included with ITVX?
ITVX is ITV’s free, ad-supported streaming service for live channels, box sets, films and exclusive programmes. ITV describes it as a service where viewers can stream new programme exclusives with adverts for free.
Free ITVX
The free tier is the first place to look for ITV catch-up programmes and selected films. It is supported by advertising, and the exact programmes available change as ITV’s rights change.
ITVX Premium
ITVX Premium is listed at £5.99 per month on ITV’s 2026 pricing page. It provides ad-free on-demand viewing and mobile downloads, although downloads and some programmes remain subject to licensing restrictions. Premium subscribers also receive access to BritBox UK content.

ITV help guidance in 2025 referred to 15,000 hours of content, while the 2026 Premium page listed 26,000 hours of shows and films. These are volatile marketing totals rather than a guaranteed list of permanently available titles, so they should not be treated as directly comparable measurements.
Is BritBox included with ITVX?
Yes. ITV says paying ITVX subscribers receive BritBox UK access, so a Premium subscription is the relevant ITVX route if you want that catalogue as part of the same paid package.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
That inclusion does not make every BritBox programme permanently available. Film and series rights can be limited by territory, contract and expiry date, and the programme shown in an app can change without the subscription price changing.
If you only want free ITV catch-up, the ad-supported ITVX tier is sufficient. If you want BritBox UK access, ad-free on-demand viewing and eligible mobile downloads, compare the Premium price and its current terms before subscribing.
What can I watch on Channel 4 streaming?
Channel 4’s streaming service is a free, ad-supported route to Channel 4 programming and related channels. It is useful for viewers who want Channel 4 originals without paying for a general subscription service.
Channels and programmes
The service covers Channel 4, E4, Film4, More4 and related programming. Depending on the current app and rights for a particular title, you may find live feeds, recent episodes, box sets and films in different sections.
Advertising and availability
Advertising is part of the free viewing model. The app’s current rules determine where adverts appear and which programmes are available, so check the programme page rather than assuming that every title has the same playback options.
When Channel 4 is the best choice
Use it first for Channel 4 commissions, E4 entertainment, Film4 titles and More4 factual or lifestyle programming. A programme made for another broadcaster will normally remain on that broadcaster’s own service instead.

5 and My5 provide free catch-up and live access to the Channel 5 family of services. They are the practical destination for Channel 5 programmes and the associated digital channels.

Freeview lists 5, 5USA, 5STAR and 5SELECT among the channels available through the app ecosystem. The exact live and catch-up selection can change when Channel 5’s rights or schedules change.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Who should use it?
Choose 5 or My5 when you are looking for Channel 5 drama, factual programmes, films or the channel’s specialist digital output. It is free, but adverts are part of the viewing experience.
What are Freeview Play and UKTV Play?
Freeview Play is an aggregation layer that brings major broadcaster apps together, while UKTV Play is the on-demand service for UKTV channels such as Dave, Drama and Yesterday.
Freeview Play
Freeview Play is useful when your television supports it and you want one programme guide that links to several broadcaster players. It does not turn every channel into a single universal catalogue: selecting a programme usually opens the relevant broadcaster app.
UKTV Play
UKTV Play supplies on-demand programmes from Dave, Drama and Yesterday. It is a useful supplement to BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and 5 because those UKTV channels are not part of the main BBC, ITV or Channel 4 catalogues.
Regional differences
Freeview says channel availability can vary by television region. If a channel or app is missing, check your postcode, retune the television and confirm that the device model supports the current Freeview Play software.
Do I need a TV Licence for streaming?
You need a TV Licence to watch live television on any channel or service and to watch on-demand BBC programmes on iPlayer. You do not need a licence solely for purely on-demand services such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, provided you are not watching their live streams.

Live means live wherever you watch
The rule applies when a programme is being shown as broadcast, whether you watch it on a television, laptop, phone, tablet, games console or streaming stick. It is the live nature of the viewing that matters, not the device.
BBC iPlayer is different from other catch-up services
BBC iPlayer requires a licence for on-demand viewing as well as live viewing. Catch-up programmes on ITVX, Channel 4 or 5 do not automatically create the same BBC iPlayer requirement, but any live channel stream on those services remains covered by the live-TV rule.

Which devices support these British TV apps?
Support depends on the individual app and television model. ITVX’s official device list includes Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Roku and Now players, Samsung Smart TVs, PlayStation and Xbox, as well as web and mobile access.
Smart televisions
On a compatible smart TV, open the television’s app store, search for the broadcaster’s current app name and install it. Older televisions may support only an earlier app version or may not have the required software at all.

A Fire TV Stick is an optional way to add supported streaming apps to an older television with an HDMI port. The stick does not remove regional rights restrictions, and you still need a broadband connection and any account or licence required by the service.
Phones, tablets and computers
Freeview’s device guidance covers mobile, tablet, PC and laptop access through linked broadcaster apps. Use the service’s current website or official app rather than an unofficial player, particularly when signing in or entering payment details.
How do I set up a British TV streaming service?
Most setups take only a few minutes, but the order below avoids common compatibility and account problems.
- Check the connection. Connect the television or streaming device to broadband and confirm that other online apps can load.
- Check the region and model. Confirm that the device is configured for the UK and that the app appears in its current app store. Freeview channel lists can differ by television region.
- Install the official app. Search for BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, 5 or UKTV Play in the device’s app store. For Freeview Play, use the television’s built-in guide and linked players.
- Create or sign in to an account. Some services let you browse before signing in, but an account may be needed for personalised viewing, saved programmes or paid features.
- Handle licensing correctly. Make sure your household has the required TV Licence before using BBC iPlayer or watching live television.
- Test both live and on-demand playback. Try one live channel and one catch-up programme. This helps distinguish an account problem from a rights or app-compatibility problem.
How should you choose between free and paid viewing?
Free services cover most mainstream British broadcaster catch-up viewing, but they use adverts and do not share one catalogue. A paid ITVX Premium subscription is mainly useful when you value ad-free on-demand playback, BritBox UK access or eligible downloads.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Choose free viewing if you watch occasional episodes, accept adverts and mainly follow one broadcaster.
- Choose ITVX Premium if ITV’s catalogue and BritBox UK content justify the monthly fee for your household.
- Use more than one free app if your viewing is spread across BBC, ITV, Channel 4, 5 and UKTV; no single free service combines all five catalogues.
- Use Freeview Play if your television supports it and you prefer a unified guide rather than opening each app separately.
Why do programmes disappear or differ between services?
Streaming catalogues are controlled by programme rights, which can vary by title, region and date. A series may be available for catch-up for a limited period, while a film or imported programme may be removed when its contract ends.
Catalogue-hour claims should also be treated cautiously. ITV’s published 15,000-hour and 26,000-hour figures come from different pages and years, and neither figure guarantees that a particular programme is available today.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Can I watch these services outside the UK?
This comparison is UK-focused. International availability is not established for every service or title, and rights can change by country, so check the provider’s current terms and the programme page for the country in which you are located.
Even when an app can be installed abroad, that does not guarantee access to the UK catalogue or live channels. The same title can have different availability, subtitles or playback rules in another territory.
What should I do if an app is missing or playback fails?
First identify whether the problem is the device, account, network or programme rights. Then work through these checks:
- The app is not listed: verify the television’s UK region, install pending system updates and check the model’s supported-app list. On an older set, use a compatible HDMI streaming device.
- Live video fails but menus load: test another live channel and an on-demand programme. A single failed title can indicate a rights restriction rather than a broadband fault.
- On-demand video fails: sign out and back in, update the app and restart the television or streaming stick. Avoid unofficial mirror sites, which may not have the programme rights.
- You see a licence message: this is expected for BBC iPlayer and live television. Confirm that the household’s licence covers the way you are watching.
- A programme is unavailable: check its listing for an expiry date or regional note. Rights changes cannot be fixed by reinstalling the app.
- Downloads are unavailable on ITVX: Premium downloads are subject to licensing restrictions, so not every programme can be saved to a mobile device.
Which route is the most practical overall?
For BBC programming, use BBC iPlayer and account for the TV Licence requirement. For ITV programmes and BritBox UK access, ITVX is the most complete route, with Premium listed at £5.99 per month in 2026. Channel 4 and 5 are the straightforward free choices for their own channels, while Freeview Play and UKTV Play fill the gaps by linking services and adding Dave, Drama and Yesterday.
Install the official apps your household actually watches, confirm your television’s regional support, and treat prices, programme lists, device compatibility and catalogue totals as details to recheck before subscribing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can ITVX Premium remove adverts from live channels too?
The Premium benefit described by ITV is ad-free on-demand viewing. Live channel streams follow their own broadcast schedules and rights, so do not assume that every live programme will be advert-free.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo ITVX’s published catalogue-hour totals mean every title is available now?
No. The 15,000-hour and 26,000-hour figures were published on different ITV pages in different years, and streaming rights change continually. Use the current programme listing to check a specific show.
Why can my neighbour see a Freeview channel that I cannot?
Freeview channel availability can vary by television region. Your aerial area, postcode configuration and device software can therefore produce a different channel list from another household.
Can I download every ITVX Premium programme to my phone?
No. ITVX says mobile downloads are subject to licensing restrictions. A Premium subscription does not guarantee that every film or episode supports offline playback.
