Banking jobs built around repetitive information processing face the greatest AI exposure. Tellers, data-entry and transaction clerks, accounting and payroll clerks, some customer-service roles, financial analysts doing routine analysis, and parts of underwriting are the clearest pressure points. The fastest growth is in fintech engineering, software, data science, artificial intelligence and machine learning, cybersecurity, information security, digital transformation, and human-machine interaction.
That does not mean AI will erase every job in those categories. It usually automates individual tasks first, while people retain accountability, exception handling, relationship work and regulated judgment. The practical question is therefore not only “Which occupation disappears?” but “Which tasks are automated, and what higher-value work replaces them?”

Which banking jobs are most exposed to AI automation?
Roles with a high share of repeatable, rules-based information handling are most exposed. AI can classify documents, extract data, reconcile records, draft routine communications and perform basic analysis at a scale that makes purely clerical staffing harder to justify.
Bank tellers and transaction clerks
Teller work combines customer interaction with deposits, withdrawals, identity checks, account maintenance and other standardized transactions. Cash handling and unusual customer situations still require people, but routine transactions are increasingly shifted to digital channels, self-service systems and automated workflows. The International Labour Organization (ILO) lists bank tellers and related clerks among declining occupations, and the World Economic Forum (WEF) includes them among the fastest-declining roles in its 2025–2030 outlook.

Data-entry and records-processing clerks
Data-entry work is especially exposed because the input is structured and the desired output is predictable. Optical character recognition, document-understanding models and workflow automation can capture information from applications, statements and forms, then route exceptions to a smaller specialist team. WEF lists data-entry clerks among the fastest-declining occupations.
Accounting, bookkeeping and payroll clerks
Reconciliation, invoice coding, journal preparation, payroll calculations and standard reporting contain many repeatable steps. Automation does not remove the need for financial controls, audit trails or people who investigate anomalies, but it reduces the volume of manual preparation. The ILO and WEF both identify accounting, bookkeeping and payroll clerks as declining categories; WEF also lists accountants and auditors among the fastest-declining roles, while higher-level assurance and interpretation remain more judgment-intensive.

Customer-information and routine service workers
Customer-information work includes answering common account questions, updating records and directing customers to standard products or processes. Chatbots and agent-assist tools can handle predictable requests, summarize interactions and suggest responses. Human staff remain important for complaints, vulnerable customers, fraud concerns, complex products and cases where a bank must exercise discretion.
Financial analysts performing basic analysis
AI can retrieve data, compare periods, produce standard ratios, summarize filings and draft recurring reports. Analysts whose work is mostly templated research and spreadsheet manipulation therefore face more pressure than analysts who frame ambiguous questions, challenge assumptions, explain risk to decision-makers or connect analysis to a regulated business decision. The ILO includes financial analysts in its declining-occupation list, but that directional label should not be read as a forecast that every analyst position will vanish.
Some underwriting work
Underwriting is a mixed case. Models can pre-screen applications, verify documents, estimate risk and recommend decisions when the evidence is complete and the rules are clear. Underwriters still handle exceptions, conflicting evidence, policy interpretation, fairness controls and accountability for difficult decisions. The ILO lists insurance underwriters among declining occupations, which points to task reduction and redesign as well as possible headcount pressure.
Which banking and fintech jobs are growing?
Growth is concentrated where banks need to build, govern and integrate digital systems. The ILO’s emerging-occupation list and WEF’s 2025–2030 outlook point to a common set of technology, data and security roles.

AI and machine-learning specialists
Machine-learning specialists design, train, evaluate and monitor models used for fraud detection, credit decisioning, service automation and forecasting. Banking requires more than model accuracy: teams must document data lineage, test for bias, monitor drift, protect confidential information and explain outcomes to risk and compliance functions. Both the ILO and WEF identify AI and machine-learning specialists as growth areas.
Information-security and cybersecurity professionals
More automation creates more systems, interfaces and attack surfaces to protect. Information-security analysts and cybersecurity specialists investigate threats, design controls, test resilience and respond to incidents. The ILO lists both information-security analysts and cybersecurity specialists among emerging occupations.
Digital-transformation specialists
Digital-transformation specialists connect business strategy, process redesign, technology delivery and workforce adoption. They decide which processes should be automated, define controls and coordinate changes across operations, compliance and customer channels. The ILO identifies digital-transformation specialists as an emerging occupation.

What does AI exposure mean for an individual banking job?
Exposure is a measure of how much a job’s tasks could be affected by AI; it is not a prediction that the occupation will be eliminated. The ILO reported on 20 May 2025 that one in four workers globally are in an occupation with some generative-AI exposure, while only 3.3% are in the highest exposure category. Its conclusion is that most jobs are more likely to be transformed than made redundant, with clerical occupations showing the highest exposure.
The Bank of England summarizes the task pattern this way: “AI tools may be more likely to automate tasks involving routine administration, processing information, writing documents or basic analysis.” It also notes that physical skills, interpersonal interaction, judgment, creativity and complex decision-making can be harder to automate. A role can therefore be highly exposed in one part of its workflow while becoming more valuable in another.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How can you compare the automation risk of two banking jobs?
Compare the jobs by task rather than by title. A role with more routine processing and fewer judgment or relationship requirements is generally more substitutable; a role with accountability, ambiguity and regulated interpretation is more likely to be augmented.
| Comparison axis | Higher-exposure pattern | More augmentation-oriented pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Routine information processing | Repetitive data capture, validation, reconciliation or standard document production | Variable cases requiring investigation and exception handling |
| Judgment and accountability | Rules are complete and decisions can be standardized | Professional judgment, policy interpretation and accountable sign-off |
| Interpersonal work | Predictable questions and scripted interactions | Negotiation, trust-building, complaints, vulnerable customers and complex advice |
| Data and software intensity | Manual movement of structured information between systems | Designing, governing, securing or improving data and software systems |
| AI’s role in the workflow | AI can perform most steps with limited review | AI supplies recommendations while a professional validates and owns the outcome |
This framework is an inference from task evidence, not a bank-specific forecast. Regulation, branch strategy, labor costs, adoption speed and collective bargaining can produce different outcomes in different institutions and countries.
Are bank tellers going away?
Teller work is likely to shrink or change rather than disappear everywhere at once. Routine cash and account transactions can move to digital channels, machines and centralized service teams, while branches retain staff for advice, complex cases, fraud concerns and customers who need assistance using new channels.
The pace depends on a bank’s branch strategy, customer behavior, local labor economics and regulatory requirements. A teller who adds relationship, problem-solving or digital-coaching skills has a broader path than one whose work remains limited to standardized transactions.

Will AI reduce financial analyst jobs?
AI is likely to reduce the time analysts spend gathering data, refreshing standard models and writing first-draft summaries. It is less likely to replace analysts who define the right question, test model assumptions, interpret uncertain evidence, challenge management decisions and explain consequences to boards, clients or regulators.
Analysts can protect their value by becoming accountable users of AI: checking source data, validating outputs, documenting limitations and translating analysis into a decision. In regulated finance, an apparently plausible answer is not sufficient if nobody can explain how it was produced or whether it is fair and compliant.
What do global forecasts say about banking automation?
WEF’s 2025 report projects 170 million jobs created and 92 million displaced worldwide by 2030, a net increase of 78 million jobs, while estimating that 22% of jobs will be disrupted. Those figures cover the labor market broadly, not banking alone, but the fastest-growing and fastest-declining occupations it identifies closely match the banking pattern: technology, data and security roles grow while teller, data-entry and routine accounting roles decline.
The baseline also varies by economy. The International Monetary Fund estimated in 2024 that AI exposure reaches about 60% of jobs in advanced economies, 40% in emerging markets and 26% in low-income countries. “Exposure” includes jobs whose tasks may be augmented as well as jobs that could be substituted, so these percentages should not be treated as expected job-loss rates.
What skills should a banker learn to stay employable?
The strongest strategy is to combine domain expertise with technical fluency and distinctly human capabilities. The ILO’s 25 March 2024 financial-sector report calls for investment in training, diversity and well-being policies as digitalization changes work.
Build practical AI literacy
- Understand what generative and predictive systems can and cannot do.
- Learn to verify outputs, identify hallucinated or incomplete information and escalate uncertain results.
- Understand privacy, access controls, model risk and the difference between assistance and autonomous decision-making.
Strengthen data and analytical skills
- Learn spreadsheet modeling, data visualization and basic statistics.
- Progress toward SQL, Python or another tool used in your bank’s analytics stack when relevant to your role.
- Practice explaining assumptions, confidence and limitations to nontechnical decision-makers.
Develop security and control awareness
- Learn the fundamentals of identity, fraud detection, cyber hygiene and incident response.
- Understand audit trails, data lineage, segregation of duties and access governance.
- Know when an automated recommendation requires human review or documented approval.
Invest in judgment and relationships
- Improve interviewing, negotiation, communication and conflict resolution.
- Learn how to handle vulnerable customers and ambiguous cases with care.
- Build expertise in a product, customer segment or regulatory area where context matters.
Move toward digital delivery
- Learn process mapping and identify steps that can be simplified before they are automated.
- Gain experience working with product, engineering, compliance and operations teams.
- Understand user experience so automated decisions and self-service journeys remain clear and accessible.
How should banks reskill employees instead of simply cutting roles?
A responsible transition starts with a task inventory: separate repetitive activities from judgment, relationship and control work, then identify which tasks AI will assist, automate or leave unchanged. Training can move people from manual processing into exception handling, quality assurance, customer advice, model oversight, data stewardship and digital operations.

Employees need time to practice, clear escalation rules and performance measures that reward accurate oversight rather than automation volume alone. Banks should also account for accessibility, diversity and well-being; the ILO specifically identifies these policies as part of managing digital change in the financial sector.
What are the main limits of these forecasts?
Occupation lists are directional projections, not precise headcount forecasts for every bank. A country may adopt systems more slowly because of regulation, legacy technology, customer preferences or collective bargaining; another may automate quickly because of cost pressure and a digital-first strategy.

Even when a task is technically automatable, deployment can be delayed by privacy rules, model validation, cybersecurity concerns, liability and the need to explain decisions. Treat the forecasts as a guide to where tasks and skills are moving, not as a fixed timetable for individual workers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will AI eliminate bank teller jobs by 2030?
There is no single global elimination date. Teller headcount may fall as routine transactions move to digital channels, but branches can retain staff for advice, complex cases, fraud concerns and customers who need hands-on help. The result will vary with each bank’s branch strategy, regulation and customer behavior.
Is a finance or accounting qualification still useful in an AI-heavy bank?
Yes, particularly when it supports control, audit, policy interpretation and accountable judgment. Automation can produce calculations and drafts, but qualified professionals are still needed to test evidence, investigate exceptions and explain whether a result is reliable and compliant.
Does AI exposure mean my job is likely to be outsourced?
Not necessarily. Exposure measures the tasks technology could affect, including tasks that make an existing employee more productive. A bank may use the capacity gained for faster service, new products, stronger controls or more complex customer work instead of removing the role.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich nontechnical skill is most valuable as banking becomes automated?
The ability to make and explain judgment in ambiguous situations is difficult to standardize. Clear communication, ethical reasoning, customer empathy and the confidence to challenge an automated recommendation help distinguish accountable professionals from routine processors.
How much do country differences matter for banking automation?
They matter substantially. AI exposure is higher in advanced economies than in emerging and low-income economies, and actual adoption also depends on regulation, infrastructure, labor costs, branch models and workforce agreements. A global ranking should therefore be treated as directional rather than a prediction for one country.
