Short answer: NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, PrivadoVPN and Private Internet Access are five UK-market services worth comparing for a Sky Broadband connection in 2026. None can make a slow Sky line faster or reliably prevent throttling. Sky says current broadband packages are unlimited and that products currently on sale are not subject to traffic management; Sky Broadband Connect is the documented exception, because available capacity is shared between customers online at the same time.
Choose a VPN for privacy on untrusted Wi-Fi, access to a work network or another specific need—not as a cure for congestion, weak Wi-Fi, line faults or an overloaded VPN server. The five names below come from UK VPN comparisons, not tests performed on Sky lines, so the practical choice depends on your package, location, devices and tolerance for slower speeds.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan a VPN stop Sky throttling my broadband?
No. A VPN encrypts traffic and sends it through a separate server; it does not add capacity to the Sky access line. If the underlying problem is a fault, busy local exchange, evening congestion, poor wireless signal or a distant VPN endpoint, the VPN cannot remove that bottleneck and may reduce throughput by adding encryption and another route.
Sky’s current usage guidance describes its broadband packages as unlimited, and its policy material says products currently on sale are not subject to traffic management. Sky Broadband Connect has a separate network-management explanation: bandwidth is shared among customers using the service at the same time, so speeds can be lower on weekday evenings and weekends. That package-specific policy is not evidence that every Sky customer is throttled.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A VPN can still change how a traffic-management system identifies a connection, but there is no evidence here that Sky customers on current packages need one to avoid throttling. Treat any speed change as a diagnostic clue, not proof that Sky is deliberately slowing your account.
Which five VPNs are worth comparing for Sky Broadband?
These five services are a practical comparison set for UK readers. One UK guide updated 8 September 2026 after testing 59 services included NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, PrivadoVPN and another provider; a Tom’s Guide list updated 12 February 2026 used NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, Private Internet Access and another provider. Because reputable lists differ on the fifth-place candidate, there is no universally agreed ranking. Neither guide establishes performance on a Sky line.
| VPN | Why it is in this comparison | Documented controls in the available material | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Appears in both UK comparison lists and has several documented connection protocols. | NordLynx, NordWhisper, OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPsec; automatic kill switch. | No Sky-specific speed, reliability, streaming or congestion result. |
| ExpressVPN | Appears in both cited UK lists as a mainstream option. | Specific protocol, device-limit, router and audit details were not stated in the supplied material. | No Sky-specific test or independently verified ranking advantage. |
| Proton VPN | Appears in both cited UK lists and publishes detailed privacy documentation. | DNS-leak protection, kill switch, always-on VPN, a stated no-logs policy and an audit described on its provider page. | Those controls do not guarantee anonymity or a particular speed on Sky. |
| PrivadoVPN | Included in the 8 September 2026 UK shortlist, illustrating a credible alternative to the other list’s fifth choice. | Specific protocol, kill-switch, audit, router and device-limit details were not stated in the supplied material. | No comparative result on Sky Broadband. |
| Private Internet Access | Included in the 12 February 2026 UK list, providing a different fifth candidate. | Specific feature and audit details were not stated in the supplied material. | No comparative result on Sky Broadband. |
Use the table as a shortlist, not a league table. Check each provider’s current UK price, renewal terms, supported devices, router instructions and server availability before paying. Those details change more often than Sky’s basic broadband policy.
NordVPN
NordVPN is the clearest choice if protocol flexibility matters. Its documentation lists NordLynx, NordWhisper, OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPsec, and an automatic kill switch is documented. Different protocols can behave differently on a particular network: a modern protocol may be quicker, while an obfuscation-oriented option can help when a network interferes with VPN traffic but may cost performance.
Do not interpret the protocol list as a promise of speed. The available evidence does not include a controlled test on a Sky router, a specified Sky package or a fixed UK server.
ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN appears in both UK comparison lists used for this shortlist, making it a reasonable service to investigate alongside the other four. The supplied evidence does not state its current protocol set, kill-switch behavior, device allowance, router support or audit details, so verify those items in its current documentation rather than inferring them from its inclusion in a ranking.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Proton VPN
Proton VPN documents DNS-leak protection, a kill switch and an always-on VPN mode. Its provider material describes a no-logs policy and an audit. These are privacy and fail-safe features: DNS protection helps keep name lookups inside the encrypted tunnel, while a kill switch can block traffic if the tunnel drops. They do not make a user anonymous, and an audit is not a guarantee that every future app, server or configuration is risk-free.
PrivadoVPN
PrivadoVPN is the alternative fifth candidate in the UK guide updated 8 September 2026. Its inclusion is useful when comparing subscription terms or software support, but the supplied evidence does not establish a Sky-specific advantage or document enough feature detail for a technical verdict. Test it under the same conditions as every other candidate if you are evaluating it.
Private Internet Access
Private Internet Access is the alternative fifth candidate in the UK list updated 12 February 2026. The list confirms its presence in a general UK comparison, not superior performance on Sky. Confirm current protocols, kill-switch options, router compatibility, device limits, logging documentation and renewal price directly before subscribing.
What should I compare before choosing a VPN for Sky?
Start with the controls that affect your use case, then check the commercial and installation details. A service that looks strong on privacy may be inconvenient on a router, while one that installs easily on every device may not suit a workplace connection.

Look for more than a single “fastest VPN” claim. Check whether the app offers several protocols, lets you change servers, reconnects after a brief drop and provides a kill switch. A protocol that works well on one Sky connection can be slower or less stable on another because of distance, server load, Wi-Fi conditions and the route between Sky and the VPN provider.
Privacy safeguards
Read the logging policy and what an independent audit actually covered. A no-logs statement describes the provider’s policy; it is not the same as legal immunity or guaranteed anonymity. Also check DNS-leak protection, IPv6 handling, crash reporting, account information requirements and whether the kill switch applies to all traffic or only selected apps.

Device and router support
Count the devices you actually use: phones, laptops, televisions, tablets and games consoles. Confirm operating-system support and simultaneous-connection rules. Router installation can protect devices that cannot run an app, but it may require a compatible router, custom firmware or manual configuration. It is optional; ordinary VPN apps do not require VPN-specific hardware.
Total first-term and renewal cost
Compare the full first-term charge with the recurring renewal price, billing frequency, taxes and refund conditions. Promotional prices can expire after the initial term. The supplied material does not provide current prices for these five services, so do not rely on an old comparison table or assume a displayed monthly equivalent is the amount charged today.

How do I test whether Sky or the VPN is causing slow speeds?
Build a repeatable baseline before changing providers. The aim is to compare like with like, not to chase a single speed-test result.
- Identify the package. Check your Sky account or bill for the exact product name. Note whether it is Sky Broadband Connect, because its shared-bandwidth policy has a different explanation for busy-period slowdowns.
- Use one device and one location. Prefer a computer connected to the Sky hub by Ethernet. If you must use Wi-Fi, record the band, room and distance so the second test uses the same conditions.
- Test with the VPN off. Run several tests at a quiet time and again during the period when the slowdown is most noticeable. Record download speed, upload speed, latency and the time.
- Check the line and local network. Pause cloud backups, video calls and other downloads. Test another wired device if possible. A result that improves when nearby traffic stops points to local usage or Wi-Fi rather than the VPN.
- Connect the VPN to a nearby UK server. Keep the same device and test method. Try the provider’s default protocol first, then one alternative protocol if the app allows it.
- Change one variable at a time. Compare a second UK server, then a server in the country you actually need. A distant or busy endpoint can be slower even when the Sky line is healthy.
- Repeat after disconnecting. If the original non-VPN speed returns, the VPN route, protocol or server is the likely cause. If both results are slow, investigate Sky, Wi-Fi, the device or congestion.
Do not use one test as proof of throttling. Consumer speed tests vary with the test server, time of day and other traffic. A sustained pattern across multiple wired tests is more useful than an isolated low number.
Why is my VPN slow on Sky Broadband?
The most common causes are outside Sky’s traffic policy. Encryption consumes some device resources, and the VPN server adds a further hop. Workplace VPNs introduce another dependency: Sky explains that traffic passes through the employer’s network and servers, where server load or an employer-imposed data limit can slow the connection.
- Remote-server distance: A UK server is usually a better starting point for a UK connection than one on another continent, but the least busy nearby server can still vary by hour.
- Protocol overhead: Some protocols prioritize compatibility or resistance to interference over raw throughput. Switching protocols can help, but it can also change stability or security properties.
- Wi-Fi limitations: A weak signal, crowded channel or old wireless standard can dominate the result. Ethernet testing separates the hub-to-device link from the VPN route.
- Endpoint congestion: The VPN provider’s server may be busy even when Sky’s network is not.
- Workplace controls: Corporate gateways may inspect, restrict or rate-limit traffic. The employer’s acceptable-use rules take precedence over personal troubleshooting.
- Device load: Older phones, routers and laptops may struggle with encryption at high line rates.
If only one app or website fails while the VPN is connected, treat it as a compatibility or destination issue first. Sky advises testing with the VPN off and contacting the VPN provider when access returns without the tunnel.

Does Sky Broadband Connect work differently?
Yes. Sky Broadband Connect is the package for which the supplied policy description explicitly says available bandwidth is shared among customers online at the same time. That means evening or weekend slowdowns can occur without a VPN being involved. Confirm the package name before attributing the pattern to deliberate throttling.
Historical material, including a 2017 Ofcom website audit, recorded an earlier distinction between Sky Broadband or Fibre and Sky Broadband Connect. It is useful context only; it should not be treated as a current product list or current wording. Use Sky’s present account information and usage guidance for a current decision.
Can a Sky hub block or break a VPN?
A particular hub firmware incident can affect some VPN configurations, but that does not demonstrate a general Sky policy of blocking VPNs. A Sky Community employee announcement described a Hub 6 issue affecting some configurations, said it had been resolved and included interim MTU advice. Because the notice was model- and incident-specific, check the hub model, firmware and provider support instructions before changing MTU values.
An old Sky Broadband Buddy manual lists VPN and proxy categories among filtering categories. Its age means it should not be used to describe current Broadband Shield defaults. If a website works only when the VPN is disabled, check current filtering settings and the VPN provider’s troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming ISP throttling.

Do I need a VPN router for whole-home Sky coverage?
No. You can run a VPN app separately on supported phones and computers. A VPN-capable router is an optional whole-home approach for devices that cannot install an app, such as some televisions or consoles, but it can require compatible hardware, manual setup and more complicated troubleshooting.
Router mode also changes the failure surface: one misconfigured tunnel can affect every connected device, and encryption performance depends on the router’s processor. Confirm firmware support, protocol compatibility and how to bypass the VPN for banking, streaming or work services that reject shared VPN addresses.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
What are the main mistakes to avoid?
- Buying on an anti-throttling promise: No listed service is shown to prevent Sky traffic management on every package.
- Comparing unlike tests: Different devices, Wi-Fi rooms, times and speed-test servers make results meaningless.
- Ignoring renewal terms: Record the recurring price and cancellation deadline, not only the introductory figure.
- Assuming a kill switch covers everything: Check whether it applies system-wide, how it behaves during sleep and whether local-network access is excluded.
- Using a workplace VPN for personal traffic: Employer policies, logging and capacity controls may apply even when your home connection is unrestricted.
- Changing MTU without a reason: Apply model-specific guidance only when the hub incident or provider support documentation matches your equipment.
- Calling a blocked website throttling: A single destination failing through the tunnel usually calls for compatibility troubleshooting.
Which VPN is the best first test for a Sky customer?
There is no evidence-based Sky-specific winner among these five. NordVPN offers the most explicitly documented protocol choice in the available material; Proton VPN provides the clearest documented DNS, kill-switch, always-on and audit information. ExpressVPN, PrivadoVPN and Private Internet Access remain reasonable comparison candidates because they appear in current UK lists, but their inclusion does not establish a performance lead on Sky.
Choose the service whose current privacy documentation, device support, router instructions, cancellation terms and total renewal cost fit your use. Then run the off-versus-on baseline test before deciding whether the VPN improves your actual problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a VPN improve Sky Broadband Connect speeds at weekends?
Not necessarily. Connect’s documented shared-bandwidth policy means busy-period capacity can be the limiting factor, and a VPN adds another route that may be slower. Test the wired connection without a VPN first and report persistent line problems to Sky.
Why does my work VPN slow down even when normal browsing is fast?
Work traffic may traverse your employer’s gateway and servers, which can be busy or subject to an employer-set data limit. Compare a normal internet test with the work tunnel and ask your IT team about server capacity before changing home broadband settings.
Can I use a VPN on a Sky hub without installing an app on every device?
Only if the hub or a separate compatible router supports the provider’s VPN configuration. Otherwise, install the app on each supported device; router-based VPNs are optional and can reduce performance for every device when enabled.
What should I do if one website stops working only with the VPN on?
Disconnect the VPN and confirm the site returns, then try another VPN server or protocol. If the problem persists, contact the VPN provider; the symptom points to destination compatibility or VPN-address blocking rather than proof of Sky throttling.
