Which Apple Products Are Worth Buying Refurbished?

Apple Certified Refurbished can be a good buy when the exact configuration fits and the live saving is meaningful. Compare seller protections, warranty, returns, model age, and service needs before purchasing.

Apple refurbished products are worth considering when the specific model and configuration meet your needs and the live price is meaningfully lower than the same item new. Apple Certified Refurbished offers a one-year limited warranty and full functional testing; Apple also says refurbished iOS devices get a new battery and outer shell. Those protections do not make every listing a bargain, and the battery policy should not be assumed for Macs, Watches, AirPods, or third-party listings.

What Apple Certified Refurbished includes

Apple says each Certified Refurbished product is cleaned, inspected, and given full functional testing. It replaces defective modules found during testing and uses genuine Apple replacement parts as needed. Apple describes a standard one-year limited warranty and says AppleCare coverage may also be purchased. These are Apple’s descriptions of its own program, not independent testing results. Apple’s refurbishment details explain the process.

Apple specifically says refurbished iOS devices receive a new battery and outer shell. Do not apply that statement to other product categories. Apple also excludes Watch or Pencil units that need replacement parts from its program. Apple’s US online-store help page describes these points.

Which Apple categories are worth checking?

Mac

A refurbished Mac is a strong candidate if its processor, memory, storage, display size, and ports suit the work you plan to do, and the saving is worthwhile against the identical new configuration. Apple’s US store snapshot featured a 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro at $1,439, compared with $1,599 new—a displayed difference of $160. These are prices observed on October 3, 2026, not lasting prices or a promise that the configuration remains in stock. Check Apple’s live refurbished catalog before deciding.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 12, 64GB, Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
  • Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
  • Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Apple’s refurbished inventory is limited to available stock, so it may not offer the build you want. Do not treat a lower price on a different chip, memory, storage, or screen size as a like-for-like discount.

iPhone

An Apple-certified refurbished iPhone can make sense when the model is still suitable, the price compares well with the same storage and carrier or unlocked version, and you value Apple’s stated new battery and outer shell for refurbished iOS devices. The October 3, 2026 US-store snapshot listed an iPhone 16 with 128GB at $659; that is a time-sensitive listing, not a general market price. Verify the exact model and regional connectivity details.

  • Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.

For a phone refurbished by another seller, check its grading standard, battery-health guarantee, parts policy, warranty, included accessories, and return terms. Consumer Reports’ refurbished-phone buying guidance also emphasizes checking the seller and the device’s condition.

iPad

Judge a refurbished iPad by the same-model configuration and current price, rather than assuming the category is automatically a good deal. Apple’s US catalog snapshot included a 13-inch M4 iPad Pro at $1,169 on October 3, 2026; stock and price can change. Apple lists refurbished iPads, but its stated new-battery and outer-shell policy is for refurbished iOS devices, and the available information does not establish a universal iPad value ranking.

Apple iPhone 13, 128GB, Starlight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • 6.1" Super Retina XDR display. 5G Superfast downloads, high quality streaming
  • Cinematic mode in 1080p at 30 fps. Dolby Vision HDR video recording up to 4K at 60 fps. 2X Optical zoom range
  • A15 Bionic chip. New 6-core CPU with 2 performance and 4 efficiency cores. New 4-core GPU. New 16-core Neural Engine
  • Up to 19 hours video playback. Face ID. Ceramic Shield front. Aerospace-grade aluminum

Watch, AirPods, Apple TV, HomePod, and accessories

Apple lists these categories in its US refurbished store, but category availability alone does not establish that any one is a better buy refurbished than new. Compare the actual item and savings, what is included, warranty, return terms, and condition. Do not assume every accessory or device receives the same treatment as refurbished iOS devices.

How to decide whether a particular listing is worth it

  1. Match the configuration. Compare the same model, chip, memory, storage, screen size, connectivity, and condition. Use the current new price and other reputable options as references; a cheaper, differently configured device is not a direct comparison.
  2. Check who refurbished it and what that means. For Apple Certified Refurbished, consult Apple’s process and warranty terms. For another seller, verify testing, battery treatment, replacement-part provenance, included charger and accessories, and the exact condition grade.
  3. Read the warranty and return terms before paying. Apple’s US online-store help page says a customer who is not satisfied should request a return within 14 calendar days of receipt. This is a US Apple policy; check the current terms for your country. Marketplace and third-party sellers may have different return windows and warranty providers.
  4. Check the model’s service status and software needs. Apple says service and parts are generally available for at least five years after it last distributed a product, sometimes longer depending on parts availability. Apple classifies a product as vintage more than five but less than seven years after distribution ended, and obsolete after more than seven years. These are service classifications, not guarantees of operating-system updates. Check the exact model’s current status and the software requirements of the apps and features you need. See Apple Support’s service-after-warranty guidance; its definitions are from Apple’s Ireland support page.
  5. Decide whether the real saving compensates for the trade-offs. Apple advertises savings of up to 15%, an undated maximum claim for its store—not a guaranteed discount on each product. A smaller saving may still matter if you value Apple’s refurbishment process and warranty; it may not be enough if the configuration is older or lacks options you need.

What the current Apple store snapshot can—and cannot—tell you

Apple’s US Certified Refurbished store includes Mac, iPad, iPhone, Watch, AirPods, Apple TV, HomePod, and accessories. The snapshot dated October 3, 2026 featured an iPhone 16 128GB, an M4 iPad Pro 13-inch, and a 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro. The listed models, prices, and stock can change, so verify the live page before comparing offers. Apple’s up-to-15% claim is a ceiling, not evidence that every category or configuration is a bargain. View the US store catalog.

Rank #4
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Blue - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.

The listed MacBook Pro comparison is a concrete example of a potential saving; the iPhone listing is a reason to check Apple’s refurbished iPhone options. Neither listing establishes that a marketplace seller offers the same device at the same price or provides Apple certification. No broad reliability, lifespan, or cross-category value ranking is established by these examples.
