A local or platform-cloud save can often be copied; characters, inventories, rankings, and account progress stored only on a publisher’s servers may not be captured by that copy. Check the game’s official shutdown announcement for any export, migration, or offline-play option, then make and verify a separate copy of every eligible local save.
First determine what kind of progress you can save
“Online game” can mean a game that syncs a local save, one that keeps some progress on publisher servers, or one that needs those servers to run. A platform backup protects only the files covered by that platform or game; it does not establish that server-held characters, items, rankings, or account state can be exported.

Before relying on a backup, check the game’s official shutdown notice and look for explicit instructions about data export, account migration, or offline play. Those options are title-specific, not guaranteed. If the announcement does not explain what happens to server-held progress, contact the publisher or developer before the service ends.
Make a backup that is current and separate
- Check support for the exact game. Confirm that the title supports the platform’s cloud-save feature; support can vary by game.
- Let synchronization finish. Check for a completion status or latest-backup timestamp after your most recent play session. An enabled cloud feature alone does not prove that the newest save uploaded.
- Preserve an independent copy where possible. Copy locally accessible save files to a separate folder or storage device without moving or deleting the originals. A second copy is useful only if it contains the files you intend to preserve.
- Verify the copy. Check its date and file presence against the original. If the platform displays competing versions, compare their dates and identify which reflects your latest actual progress before restoring or replacing anything.
- Keep the shutdown instructions. Follow any publisher-provided export or migration steps before the stated deadline; a local backup may not substitute for them.
Steam on PC: check cloud status and local save files
Confirm Steam Cloud support and synchronization
Check the game’s Steam Store page for the Steam Cloud indicator. Developers choose which files a game uploads, and many games do not use Steam Cloud for saves. Before closing Steam or changing devices, allow synchronization to complete. If Steam shows a cloud conflict, compare the displayed dates and choose the copy that corresponds to your latest progress. Steam warns that launching without resolving a conflict can result in lost progress.

Steam notes that support can explain how Cloud works, but cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts. That makes it important to preserve the right copy before proceeding.
Find and copy local Steam Cloud folders
Steam documents these default local folders for Cloud files:

Files may be organized by Steam account ID and game AppID. Finding a folder there does not prove it contains the game’s complete save; some games store saves elsewhere, and third-party save locations vary. If the location is unclear, check the developer’s official site or ask its support team. Copy the relevant files to a separate destination and preserve the originals.

Do not confuse an installation backup with a save backup
Steam’s “Backup game files” feature is for installation files, not a universal save export. Steam says backups of Valve-created games omit saved games and custom content; save locations for third-party games vary. Many games installed through third-party installers, including some free-to-play or MMO-style games, are incompatible with the installation backup tool. A manually copied local save can be stored on a USB drive, but that cannot retrieve server-only progress or guarantee the file will remain usable after shutdown.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: use Save Data Cloud if supported
Check the game and membership requirements
Nintendo Switch Save Data Cloud requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and works only with compatible software. Check the game’s software menu, eShop information, or Nintendo Store listing for its Save Data Cloud support indicator. Save data is tied to a user and is not transferable between users. Nintendo says compatible Switch saves can be backed up or downloaded between Switch and Switch 2 using the same Nintendo Account.
Back up from the game menu or System Settings
- On HOME, highlight the game and press + or –.
- Select Save Data Cloud, then choose the user.
- Select Back Up Save Data.
You can also open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, choose the user and title, and back up the save.

Check the timestamp before restoring
To check whether the cloud copy is current, open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud and review the last-backup timestamp. Nintendo recommends checking the internet connection, automatic-backup settings, and the title’s cloud-save compatibility if a backup is missing or stale.

A cloud download can overwrite the console’s current save, and the overwritten data cannot be recovered. Compare dates before downloading. If the console copy is newer, Nintendo says: “If the save data on the console is more recent than the version stored in the cloud service, you can manually back up your save data by selecting Back Up Save Data.”

If a Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, access to cloud backups is unavailable; Nintendo says resubscribing within 180 days restores access. The available official guidance does not establish a general-purpose way to export Switch save files to microSD or USB, so do not treat copied installation files or screenshots as save backups.

When more than one option is available, check these points before trusting it:
- Game support: Does this exact title support the platform cloud feature or export method?
- Data location: Is the copy a local save, a platform-cloud save, or publisher-server data?
- Future access: Will you still be able to reach the copy if a subscription or game service ends?
- Usability: Can it be restored or read without the original game service?
- Overwrite risk: Could restoring it replace a newer save?
Platform guidance can explain eligible save backups, but it cannot establish a universal way to export server-held progress. The steps above cover verified Steam and Nintendo guidance; consult the game’s official shutdown notice and the relevant platform’s current support documentation for other platforms before relying on a specific procedure.
