Samsung SmartThings-Compatible Devices: What to Check Before You Buy

Before buying a SmartThings device, verify the exact model in your region, how it connects, whether your hub or controller supports it, and which features SmartThings exposes.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying a smart device for Samsung SmartThings, look up its exact brand and model in the SmartThings app under Menu → Supported devices, using your region’s list. Then confirm how it connects and whether your setup has the hub or controller it needs. A shared label such as Zigbee, Matter, or “works with SmartThings” does not by itself guarantee that a particular model will pair or expose every feature you want.

What “compatible with SmartThings” should mean

Treat compatibility as a chain of checks, not a single protocol label. The exact model must be supported in your region; its connection route must work with your setup; any required hub or controller must have the relevant capabilities; pairing must succeed; and the integration must expose the controls and automations you expect.

SmartThings says device capabilities vary by manufacturer and device. A connected light, plug, sensor, or other product may therefore offer different controls or automation options from another device in the same broad category. SmartThings recommends checking its in-app supported-device list by brand or device type. SmartThings’ supported-device guidance is the place to start, but check the listing for the exact model rather than relying only on a brand name.

Check the connection route and required hardware

SmartThings devices can connect through different routes. The route determines whether your existing setup is enough or whether you need a compatible hub, controller, or account-based integration.

Connection route What to verify before buying
Zigbee or Z-Wave SmartThings identifies these as hub-connected protocols. Confirm that you have an enabled SmartThings hub with the relevant protocol support, and that the exact device is listed for your region. Z-Wave products may need to be excluded from a previous network before they can be added again. Supported-device guidance; Z-Wave setup guidance
LAN-connected SmartThings says LAN-connected devices require a SmartThings-enabled hub. Check the precise model and integration in the regional Supported devices list rather than assuming that any device on your home network will appear in SmartThings. SmartThings supported-device guidance
Matter over Wi-Fi or Ethernet Confirm that you have a compatible Matter controller and can complete setup in the SmartThings app. Check the device’s network requirements and the current support information for your specific controller. Matter integration support
Matter over Thread In addition to a compatible controller, the setup needs Thread Border Router capability. Do not assume a hub supports Thread just because it supports Matter; check the current specifications for the exact hub model. Matter integration support
Direct or cloud integration SmartThings’ developer documentation distinguishes direct-connected integrations from cloud-connected integrations and hub-connected protocols. Confirm the exact device listing and connection method; support for a protocol does not necessarily mean the product pairs directly to your phone or hub. SmartThings developer documentation

For Matter, check the controller as well as the device

A Matter badge identifies a Matter device, but it does not remove the need for a compatible controller. SmartThings’ Matter guidance describes scanning the device’s pairing QR code or entering its setup code, choosing a hub and room, and selecting a Wi-Fi or Thread network if prompted. The connection still depends on the controller and the network path the device uses. Read SmartThings’ Matter setup and support guidance before choosing a controller.

SmartThings’ support article names the SmartThings 2018 Hub (IM6001-V3P01) and Aeotec Smart Home Hub in its Matter-controller discussion. It also says the SmartThings 2015 Hub lacks a built-in Thread router, so Thread connections require a third-party border router. Those are examples in a support article dated 2023, not a complete or necessarily current buying list. Verify the firmware, regional app support, and Thread Border Router capability of the specific controller you plan to use.

Check setup, ownership, and the features you need

Even a listed device can fail to add if it is not ready to pair or if the setup conditions are wrong. Before purchase, look for the manufacturer’s onboarding instructions and check whether the product is new, reset, or still associated with another system.

  • Pairing mode: Find the manufacturer’s steps for putting the exact model into pairing mode.
  • Previous network or owner: A used or previously installed Z-Wave device may need exclusion before re-adding. Follow the device’s physical confirmation steps and SmartThings’ Z-Wave instructions.
  • Matter code: Check that the QR code or fallback setup code will be available and readable during onboarding.
  • Controller and signal: Keep the required controller available, and check device range and signal where the product will be installed.
  • Network and power: SmartThings’ Matter troubleshooting guidance flags network frequency or security compatibility and adequate device power as possible setup factors.
  • Required features: Confirm that SmartThings exposes the specific controls or automations you care about; protocol compatibility alone does not establish feature parity.

These setup considerations, including pairing mode, controller availability, range, network compatibility, and power, are covered in SmartThings’ Matter support guidance. For Z-Wave reset and exclusion, see SmartThings’ Z-Wave instructions.

A practical buying check for a Matter smart plug

SmartThings lists on/off and dimmable plug-in units among the Matter device types it supports. That makes a Matter smart plug a relevant category to consider, not a blanket endorsement of every marketplace listing or model. SmartThings’ Matter information explains its Matter support.

Aqara Smart Hub M100 for Home Automation, Matter Controller, Wi-Fi
  • Multi-Protocol Smart Hub with Matter Bridge – The M100 is a versatile smart hub compatible with Thread devices and Aqara Zigbee (** Not third-party Zigbee devices), supporting up to 20 Aqara Zigbee devices and 20 Thread devices. As a Matter Bridge, it connects Aqara Zigbee products to other smart home ecosystems, compatible with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Home Assistant, etc. Note: Use a 5V⎓0.5A power adapter (not included) and keep the product continuously powered during use.
  • Advanced Matter Bridging for Seamless Smart Home Integration – The M100 enables Aqara’s unique features, such as facial recognition and complex automation, to work across Home Assistant and other Matter ecosystems. Expand your smart home with Aqara or third-party Matter devices (requires a Matter-enabled hub). (Some automation, such as cloud push notification, will still require the cloud connection to be executed.)
  • Flexible Power & Small Size – Features a universal USB-A port for power and data, allowing connection to power banks, wall outlets, PCs, or routers for a simple and quick setup. The Hub M100's shaft can be adjusted within a 210-degree range, making its placement extremely flexible.
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 6 for Faster & Security—This product supports a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 6 wireless network connection, which enables more efficient connections with advanced WPA3 security. Wi-Fi 6 ensures smoother performance even in high-traffic environments, allowing multiple devices to connect without compromising speed or reliability. Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M100 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
  1. In SmartThings, open Menu → Supported devices and search for the plug’s exact brand or model in your region.
  2. Identify whether the plug uses Matter over Wi-Fi or Thread; do not infer the connection type from the Matter badge alone.
  3. For Wi-Fi, compare the plug’s network requirements with your home network. For Thread, confirm that your controller setup includes a Thread Border Router.
  4. Check that SmartThings exposes the plug controls you need, such as on/off or dimming where applicable, and review its manufacturer’s pairing instructions.
  5. Confirm you can access the QR code or setup code and that any required controller will be available during setup.

When buying a hub or controller makes sense

If your current setup lacks the hardware required by a device, a SmartThings-enabled hub or Matter controller may be the missing piece. Match the hardware to the device’s actual route: Zigbee and Z-Wave require a hub with the relevant support; Matter requires a compatible controller; Matter over Thread additionally needs Thread Border Router capability. SmartThings’ supported-device guidance and Matter support page explain these requirements. Because model lists and firmware support can change, verify the exact controller and device in the app before committing to a combination.
