Microsoft Copilot produced the project-management app Tony Phillips preferred in this one comparison, even though he expected it to be the weakest. Gemini created the cleanest-looking interface, ChatGPT delivered the most visually prominent and polished presentation, and Copilot added practical guidance and controls that made its offline Kanban board feel more complete. The result is a personal preference from one prompt and one author—not a universal ranking of Gemini, ChatGPT, or Copilot.

Which AI assistant won the project-management app test?

Copilot was the winner for Tony Phillips because its generated board included small usability details he expected to keep using: a subtitle with guidance, a persistent “Changes saved locally” notice, a choice of starting column when creating a task, a confirmed clear-board action, and labeled task counts. Those additions mattered more to him than having the most restrained or visually dramatic design.

Phillips’ August 11, 2026 comparison asked Gemini, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot to create exactly the same deliverable: a personal Kanban board in one self-contained HTML file. All three produced working apps. His judgment focused on appearance, ease of use, and whether he would continue using the result, so the conclusion belongs to this particular test rather than to the assistants in every coding task.

What did the shared prompt require?

The assistants received a common specification designed to produce a small, offline project-management tool rather than a cloud service or a full business platform. The file had to open in a browser without downloading anything else.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • One standalone HTML file.
  • No external libraries, frameworks, CDNs, or internet resources.
  • Four workflow columns: To Do, In Progress, Review, and Done.
  • Creating, editing, and deleting tasks.
  • Drag-and-drop movement between columns.
  • Optional notes and due dates.
  • Low, medium, and high priority.
  • Persistence through browser localStorage.
  • Task counts.
  • Responsive styling aimed primarily at desktop use.

That common prompt is important. A more attractive result could not win simply by omitting difficult functions, and an assistant could not rely on a hosted database or a design framework. The comparison therefore tested how each model translated the same feature list into a usable local file.

How did Gemini’s Kanban board perform?

Gemini produced the cleanest interface in Phillips’ account. Its restrained layout kept attention on the board instead of surrounding controls, making the four-column workflow easy to scan.

What Gemini did well

  • Priority strips on cards made urgency visible without adding large blocks of text.
  • Controls appeared on hover, leaving the board uncluttered during normal use.
  • The overall presentation felt calm and organized rather than busy.

This approach suits someone who wants a compact personal board and already understands how to operate it. Hiding controls until a card is hovered can preserve space, especially when many tasks are visible. The trade-off is discoverability: a first-time user may not immediately know that more actions are available on a card.

Gemini’s result was not described as incomplete. It met the shared request and worked, but Phillips valued Copilot’s explanations and visible status cues more than Gemini’s visual restraint. In other words, Gemini led on cleanliness, not on the final decision about which file to keep.

Why did ChatGPT’s version look more polished?

ChatGPT generated the most visually prominent presentation of the three. Phillips called it polished, with a darker banner and controls and information that were more visually forceful than Gemini’s.

Where the stronger presentation helps

A prominent header can make the application feel finished when it opens, and clearly emphasized controls can reduce the chance that a user overlooks an important action. That visual confidence may appeal to someone who wants a small tool to feel like a designed product rather than a plain utility.

What Phillips found less suitable

The same emphasis that made ChatGPT’s result polished also made it more forceful. Phillips preferred a calmer board for his own work. This is a preference about information density and visual hierarchy, not evidence that ChatGPT failed a requirement or generated unusable code.

ChatGPT’s showing demonstrates why “best design” and “best tool for one person” can diverge. A bold banner and prominent controls can be advantageous for a shared workspace, while an individual who opens the board repeatedly may prefer fewer visual demands around the cards.

What made Copilot the preferred app?

Copilot won by addressing the moments around task management, not by being described as the cleanest or most visually striking interface. Its additions made the board explain itself and made potentially destructive actions clearer.

Visible local-saving status

The persistent “Changes saved locally” message tells the user where the data is being kept. That is especially useful for an offline file: without a status indicator, a person may wonder whether a newly created task will still be there after closing the browser. The message also reinforces the boundary of the tool; this is local persistence, not an account-backed synchronization service.

A subtitle and usage guidance

Copilot added a subtitle and guidance about using the board. Phillips considered those explanatory touches evidence that the app was complete enough to hand to someone without a separate instruction sheet. They take up a little space, but they reduce the need to discover behavior by trial and error.

Choosing a starting column

When creating a task, the user could choose its starting column instead of always creating it in To Do and moving it afterward. That is a small interaction improvement for people who capture work already in progress or record completed items after the fact.

Confirmed clear-board action

Copilot included a confirmation before clearing the board. A clear-all control can be useful when starting a new project, but it can also erase every visible task in one click. Requiring confirmation adds a deliberate pause at exactly the point where an accidental click would be most costly.

Labeled task counts

Its counts included labels, so the numbers were tied clearly to their meaning rather than appearing as unexplained totals. That makes the board’s status easier to understand at a glance and helps a user distinguish a count for one workflow state from an overall task total.

Phillips says these details made Copilot’s version feel more complete and identifies it as the app he planned to use. His quotable conclusion captures the surprise: “The biggest surprise was that Copilot—the model I expected to be the least impressive—ended up creating the version I preferred.”

Did all three assistants actually meet the requirements?

Yes. Phillips reports that Gemini, ChatGPT, and Copilot all generated working apps from the same specification. The distinction came from how the features were presented and how comfortable the author felt using each result, not from one assistant producing a functioning board while the others failed.

Assistant Result described by Phillips Notable interface choices Why it did or did not win
Gemini Cleanest interface Restrained layout, priority strips on cards, controls shown on hover Strongest visual calm, but the author valued Copilot’s visible guidance and safeguards more
ChatGPT Polished and visually prominent Darker banner with more prominent information and controls Well-presented, although more visually forceful than the author wanted
Microsoft Copilot Preferred version and planned choice Subtitle, usage guidance, local-save message, starting-column selector, clear-board confirmation, labeled counts Practical details made the app feel most complete for this user

The source does not assign numerical scores to these categories. The table summarizes Phillips’ descriptions; it is not a new ranking or an independent feature audit.

What does this comparison prove—and what does it not prove?

It shows that three mainstream assistants can turn a detailed natural-language specification into a usable, self-contained Kanban board, and that small product decisions can matter as much as visual polish. It also shows that the assistant a user expects to prefer may not be the one that best matches the user’s working habits.

It does not establish that Copilot is the best coding assistant, the best designer, or the best choice for every project-management app. The evaluation involved one author, one prompt, and three outputs. There were no repeat trials, numerical scores, systematic browser or operating-system tests, or code-level security review. The comparison also does not verify current prices, subscription requirements, plan limits, or affiliate availability for any of the assistants.

Those limits matter because generated interfaces can vary with wording, model updates, hidden defaults, and the amount of iteration a user requests. A different prompt that emphasizes accessibility, mobile use, keyboard navigation, visual branding, or complex dependencies could produce a different preference order.

How can you reproduce the test fairly?

To make your own comparison meaningful, keep the deliverable and evaluation criteria identical for every assistant. Do not repair one output extensively while judging another straight from its first generation.

  1. Paste the same specification. Request one self-contained HTML file, prohibit external resources, and include all four columns and required task features.
  2. Save each response as its own file. Use distinct filenames so you can reopen the outputs independently and avoid mixing revisions.
  3. Open the files locally in the same browser. Check that the board loads without an internet connection and that the layout is usable at the same desktop window size.
  4. Exercise every required action. Create a task, add notes and a due date, assign each priority, edit it, drag it between columns, and delete it.
  5. Close and reopen the file. Confirm whether tasks remain present, because persistence is a central part of the specification.
  6. Check safety cues. Look for a clear-board confirmation and any indication that changes are saved locally before treating the app as dependable.
  7. Record preferences separately from compliance. Note whether each feature works, then judge visual density, discoverability, and whether you would keep using the board.

This procedure separates objective checks from personal taste. It also makes it easier to explain why a result won: because it met requirements, because it was easier to understand, or because its visual style matched the evaluator.

Which assistant should you choose for your own offline board?

Use the result that matches your priority rather than copying Phillips’ choice automatically. His account gives a practical decision framework.

  • Choose a Gemini-style result if a clean, restrained board is most important and you are comfortable discovering card controls through interaction.
  • Choose a ChatGPT-style result if you want a stronger visual hierarchy, darker framing, and controls that stand out immediately.
  • Choose a Copilot-style result if visible guidance, clear local-save status, safer destructive actions, labeled counts, and flexible task creation matter most.

Before adopting any generated file, test it with your actual workflow. A board that looks excellent with four sample cards may become difficult to scan when every column contains real work. Likewise, a status message or confirmation that feels unnecessary in a tiny personal project may be valuable when the file is shared with a less technical user.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What are the practical limits of a standalone local Kanban file?

The requested design is intentionally lightweight. Because it uses one HTML file and browser localStorage, it avoids a server, account setup, external libraries, and recurring online infrastructure for the board itself. That makes it convenient for a personal offline workflow and easy to archive or move as a file.

The same simplicity defines its scope. The comparison describes no shared workspace, multi-user synchronization, cloud backup, permissions, reporting, or cross-device data service. If those capabilities are essential, the generated board is solving a different problem from a hosted team project-management system. Do not assume that a local-save message means your tasks are available on another computer or recoverable after browser data is removed.

The source also does not report accessibility testing, mobile-specific testing, security analysis, or performance measurements. Treat those as checks you must perform for your own circumstances, especially before relying on the file for sensitive or business-critical information.

Why did the “surprise” matter to the author?

The surprise was not that Copilot alone could generate an app. All three assistants did that. It was that the model Phillips expected to impress him least produced the version whose small operational details aligned best with his habits.

That distinction is useful when judging AI-generated software. A striking interface can win a screenshot comparison, and a clean interface can win a design review, but the app a person keeps may be the one that explains itself, prevents an avoidable mistake, and removes one extra step from routine work. In this test, those qualities outweighed the cleaner appearance and the more forceful polish of the alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the generated Kanban board without an internet connection?

Yes, the requested deliverable was a standalone HTML file with no external libraries, CDNs, frameworks, or internet resources. Save the file locally and open it in a browser; its persistence is handled through that browser’s localStorage rather than an online account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will tasks appear on another computer or browser automatically?

No such synchronization was part of the tested design. The comparison only establishes local persistence, so moving the board to another environment requires whatever manual file or data transfer the generated app supports.

Did the comparison test accessibility or keyboard-only operation?

The account does not report accessibility, keyboard-navigation, screen-reader, mobile, or assistive-technology testing. If those needs matter, test each generated file yourself instead of treating the visual review as an accessibility certification.

Can I trust a generated board with confidential project information?

The comparison included no code-level security review or privacy audit. Before storing sensitive data, inspect the file and test its behavior in your own environment; the fact that it runs locally does not by itself guarantee secure handling of every piece of information.
