For the complete Dragon Ball Super manga, start at chapter 1 and read in numerical order through chapter 104, the latest chapter listed by VIZ Media as of October 30, 2026. If you have finished the TV anime and want a shorter route into the manga’s later stories, start at chapter 42 in volume 9—but earlier manga events differ from the anime. Black Frieza appears near the end of the Granolah story; that reveal is not a separately published Black Frieza saga.
What is the reading order for the Dragon Ball Super manga?
Follow the numbered chapters from low to high. The manga’s stories move from Beerus and the Universe 6 conflict through Future Trunks and the Tournament of Power, then into the Galactic Patrol Prisoner story, Granolah the Survivor, and the later Earth-set material. Reading straight through avoids relying on arc labels, which can vary between guides.

That numerical order is the simplest answer whether you are reading online, collecting the English paperbacks, or trying to find the Black Frieza reveal. A chapter number is a more dependable checkpoint than a fan-made list that treats each story boundary as exact. The publisher’s catalog also groups chapters into volumes, but a volume can include material around a transition rather than line up neatly with the name of a single story.
| Reading stop | Where to read | What happens at this point |
|---|---|---|
| Full manga continuity | Chapter 1 onward | Read the earlier Super stories in order before the later post-anime material. |
| Shorter post-anime handoff | Chapter 42, in volume 9 | A practical entry point for readers moving on from the TV-era stories; it is not a substitute for the earlier manga. |
| Galactic Patrol Prisoner / Moro | Continue from the chapter 42 transition through the chapter 67 transition | Keep reading numerically: volume 15 contains chapters 65–68, so it spans the transition around the story’s end. |
| Granolah the Survivor | Continue through chapter 87, in volume 20 | Black Frieza is revealed near the end of this story. |
| Goten and Trunks / Super Hero lead-in | From chapter 88 onward | The story shifts to Earth; volume 20 previews this new arc, and volume 21 follows Trunks and Dr. Hedo. |
| Super Hero and aftermath | Continue through chapter 104, in volume 24 | Volume 22 covers Red Ribbon Army, Pan, and Cell Max; volume 24 groups chapters 101–104. |
VIZ’s official chapter index lists chapters through 104 and 24 collected volumes as of October 30, 2026. The chapter and volume boundaries above are useful checkpoints, not a claim that every guide uses the same labels for each arc. Check VIZ’s Dragon Ball Super chapter index for the publisher’s current listing.

In practical terms, there are three useful endpoints to keep distinct. Chapter 87 is the place to reach the Black Frieza reveal; chapter 104 is the endpoint of the manga currently listed by VIZ; and chapter 1 is the starting point for the full manga route. These are not three different official editions or saga bundles. They are reader-friendly ways to describe how far you want to go.
What chapter do I start after the anime?
Start at chapter 42 in volume 9 if your priority is reaching the manga’s post-anime stories. Choose chapter 1 instead if you want the manga’s own version of the whole story, because the manga and anime are not interchangeable scene for scene.
Choose chapter 42 for the shorter handoff
Chapter 42 is a practical transition point for readers heading toward the Galactic Patrol Prisoner story. Volume 9 also includes earlier Tournament of Power material, so it is inaccurate to describe every page of that volume as part of the Moro story. Treat chapter 42 as a starting point for the later route, not as a claim that the anime and manga match perfectly up to that point.
If you take this route, keep chapter 42 as your reference rather than assuming that buying volume 9 means you are skipping directly to a self-contained Moro volume. The volume contains some earlier Tournament of Power material as well. From the chapter 42 transition, read onward into the later chapters instead of jumping ahead to an arc label or a volume number you have seen in a guide.
Choose chapter 1 for the complete manga route
Beginning at chapter 1 lets you see the manga’s treatment of Beerus, Universe 6, Future Trunks, and the Tournament of Power before continuing into the later stories. That is the clearest choice if you do not want to miss manga-specific differences or transitions.
VIZ describes the series as “Goku’s adventure from the best-selling manga Dragon Ball continues!” This is a short promotional description of the series, not a claim that the manga and anime tell every scene in the same way or that the publisher has named a new Black Frieza saga.

Volume 15 is the most useful shopping landmark near the Moro story’s end: VIZ groups chapters 65–68 in that volume. For the complete story, do not use an arc label alone to decide where to stop or restart; continue in chapter order around the chapter 42 and chapter 67 transitions.

Guides do not always place the Moro–Granolah boundary the same way. One account labels both stories at chapter 67, while another begins Granolah at that chapter. The publisher’s chapter-to-volume groupings are a steadier guide for buying collected editions than treating any single fan-facing arc boundary as definitive.
That distinction matters if you are buying paperbacks one at a time. Volume 15 is a useful landmark because it contains chapters 65–68, but it is not a reason to treat chapter 67 as a universally agreed dividing line. If a guide says the Moro story ends at 67 and another says Granolah begins at 67, those descriptions can overlap at the boundary. The reading order does not change: carry on through the next numbered chapter.
For a reader who wants the complete progression rather than a single arc, chapter 42 is the later-story handoff and chapter 67 is a boundary area, not a stop. Keep reading into Granolah and onward to the endpoint that suits your goal. This approach also prevents a common buying mistake: assuming that the name of a story in a guide tells you exactly which paperback to buy without checking the chapter range printed in the publisher’s catalog.

Black Frieza appears near the end of the Granolah story, with chapter 87 in volume 20. If your sole goal is to reach that reveal, volume 20 is the relevant collected-volume landmark; it is not a separate Black Frieza arc or a standalone volume to buy.
If you want to catch up with the currently indexed manga rather than stop at the reveal, continue from chapter 88 through chapter 104. This takes you through the Goten and Trunks material, the Super Hero story and its aftermath. The VIZ catalog lists volume 24 as covering chapters 101–104, making it the latest collected-volume endpoint in the catalog on October 30, 2026.
So if the question is “When does Black Frieza appear?”, the concise answer is near the end of Granolah, at chapter 87 in volume 20. If the question is “What should I read to catch up?”, do not stop at 87: continue through the later Earth-set stories. The reveal is a plot development within the existing Granolah story, not a reason to search for a separate paperback or an officially titled saga.
Is there a Black Frieza saga yet?
VIZ does not currently list a separately published Black Frieza saga or a chapter 105. Black Frieza’s appearance is a plot development within the Granolah story, not evidence that a new, separately released saga has begun. No creator statement confirming a future Black Frieza saga was established in the available official information; the lack of a listing or announcement is not proof that the series is cancelled.

Because publication status can change, check the VIZ chapter index for new listings rather than relying on a speculative chapter date, volume number, or arc name.
As of VIZ’s October 30, 2026 catalog listing, chapter 104 is the latest indexed chapter and there are 24 collected volumes. That is a snapshot of what the publisher lists on that date, not a promise about a future schedule. No chapter 105 release date, volume 25, or completed Black Frieza arc should be assumed from the character’s appearance alone. If you see a claimed date or volume number elsewhere, confirm it against the current publisher listing before treating it as official.
Do I need to read the Super Hero chapters?
No, not to reach Black Frieza’s first appearance: that reveal comes earlier, near the end of Granolah. But the Super Hero material is part of the manga’s route after chapter 87, and reading it is the way to follow the currently indexed story through chapter 104.
The manga route includes the Goten and Trunks lead-in as well as Super Hero material and aftermath. The film does not replace all of those manga chapters, so watching the movie is not the same as reading the full post-Granolah sequence.

For readers who want only the reveal, the movie question is secondary: read through chapter 87. For readers who want to know what comes after that point in the manga, keep going from chapter 88. VIZ’s catalog provides helpful later checkpoints: volume 20 previews the new Earth-set arc, volume 21 follows Trunks and Dr. Hedo, and volume 22 covers Red Ribbon Army, Pan, and Cell Max. Volume 24 then groups chapters 101–104. Those catalog descriptions show why a movie-only route and a complete manga catch-up are not the same thing.
Where can I read or buy the chapters?
VIZ’s chapter index marks selected chapters as free and labels many intervening chapters “Join to read.” It also directs readers to MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA for the latest free chapters in their location; availability depends on region, so check the service where you live instead of assuming every chapter is free everywhere.
For digital reading, start with the publisher’s index to see which chapters are listed and what access label appears beside each one. Selected chapters being free does not mean every chapter is free at all times, and “latest free chapters” on MANGA Plus is qualified by location. If you are choosing a digital service, verify chapter access in your region rather than relying on a general claim that the entire series is available without charge.

For print, VIZ identifies English paperback editions and retailer options on its catalog pages. A full numbered run means volumes 1–24, not an unverified complete Super box set. Readers taking the anime-to-later-stories route can use volume 9 as an entry point and continue with the subsequent volumes toward volume 20; readers who want the current catalog endpoint can include volume 24. VIZ lists the English paperback of volume 24 as released March 3, 2026. See VIZ’s Dragon Ball Super volume 24 page for edition and retailer details.

The volume 24 paperback is identified by ISBN 978-1-9747-6224-8. That number is useful when searching retailer catalogs to make sure you are looking at the English paperback edition rather than another listing or format. VIZ’s product page includes retailer options such as Amazon, Bookshop.org, Barnes & Noble, and Books-A-Million; availability and prices can vary by retailer. The best straightforward search phrase for the English paperbacks is “Dragon Ball Super manga volumes paperback.”
If you are collecting the whole run, look for the numbered Super volumes from 1 through 24 rather than assuming a complete Super box set is available. If you are coming from the anime and want the later stories, volume 9 is the entry landmark, with later volumes leading toward volume 20 and the Black Frieza reveal. If your goal is the currently indexed endpoint, volume 24 is the latest catalog landmark. The original Dragon Ball Complete Box Set and Dragon Ball Z Complete Box Set are optional ways to explore earlier series, but neither substitutes for the Dragon Ball Super paperbacks.
VIZ’s volume pages show retailer options, but that does not establish a special affiliate arrangement with those stores. Choose a retailer based on edition, stock, price, and delivery where you live. For a read-first route, VIZ Shonen Jump and MANGA Plus are relevant digital places to check; streaming services are not a substitute for the manga chapter index.

Pick the route that matches what you want to catch up on, then use chapter numbers to keep your place. These are reader-oriented routes, not official publisher-named saga bundles.
- New to the manga: Start at chapter 1 and read through chapter 104.
- Finished the anime and want the later manga stories: Start at chapter 42 in volume 9, with the understanding that earlier manga events differ from the anime.
- Only want the Black Frieza reveal: Read through chapter 87 in volume 20.
- Want the latest chapter currently listed by VIZ: Continue past the reveal through chapter 104 in volume 24.
Before you buy, decide whether you want the complete numbered run, a shorter route after the anime, or just the volume containing the reveal. Then use the publisher’s chapter-to-volume references to confirm the edition and endpoint. Volume 15 is a helpful Moro-era landmark, volume 20 contains chapter 87 and previews the Earth-set material, and volume 24 contains chapters 101–104. These are checkpoints, not official arc bundles.
VIZ’s series page describes the title as: “Goku’s adventure from the best-selling manga Dragon Ball continues!” That is promotional copy, not a sales statistic or a statement about the manga’s current publication endpoint.

Frequently Asked Questions
Has VIZ announced a release date for Dragon Ball Super chapter 105?
No chapter 105 date is listed on VIZ’s chapter index as of October 30, 2026. Check the index for updates; the absence of a listing does not establish that the manga has been cancelled.
What is the ISBN for the Dragon Ball Super volume 24 paperback?
VIZ lists ISBN 978-1-9747-6224-8 for the English paperback edition. The publisher’s volume page is the place to confirm the edition and retailer availability.
Does the Super Hero movie cover everything after Granolah?
No. The manga includes a Goten-and-Trunks lead-in and material after the Super Hero events, so the movie alone does not reproduce the full manga sequence through its current endpoint.
What chapter should I start with after the Dragon Ball Super anime?
Chapter 42 in volume 9 is a practical shorter handoff toward the later manga stories. Start at chapter 1 if you want the full manga continuity, since manga and anime events are not interchangeable scene for scene.
What volume has the Black Frieza reveal?
Chapter 87, near the end of the Granolah story, is in volume 20. It is not a separate Black Frieza volume or saga.
Which volume is the Moro arc in?
Volume 15 contains chapters 65–68 and is a useful landmark near the Moro story’s end. Guides do not always use the same chapter boundary for Moro and Granolah, so follow the numbered chapters rather than relying on a single arc label.

VIZ marks selected chapters free and many others as “Join to read.” It points readers to MANGA Plus for the latest free chapters in their location, but access depends on regional availability.

It is a practical transition point for readers heading into the Galactic Patrol Prisoner story, not a claim that every page of volume 9 is part of Moro. Volume 9 also contains earlier Tournament of Power material.
The Bottom Line
Read Dragon Ball Super in chapter order: start at chapter 1 for the complete manga, or at chapter 42 in volume 9 for a shorter post-anime handoff. Black Frieza appears near the end of Granolah, at chapter 87 in volume 20; continue through chapter 104 in volume 24 if you want to reach the latest chapter VIZ listed as of October 30, 2026.
